Long Beach’s Bigmista’s Barbecue Calls It Quits in Wild Blog Post | Eater LA

"After years of serving ribs, pulled pork, brisket and more at farmers markets, on television and at barbecue competitions nationwide, I’m sad to say the namesake Long Beach restaurant run by Neil “Bigmista” Strawder is closing its doors on July 1. Neil and his wife and co-owner Phyllis Strawder will be behind the counter for that final day, then plan to move east for parts unknown. Phyllis—who has never been one to shy away from controversy—explained in a blog post that they’re leaving simply “Because we’re grown and we can,” and described a contentious lease fight in which they tried to break the lease, considered letting the landlord evict them, and ultimately decided to pay what’s owed so they can move on. The couple had already closed a sister restaurant earlier this year, blaming tough parking and only enough cash flow to keep them afloat, so there are only a few weeks left to enjoy their barbecue before the July 1 final day." - Farley Elliott

I am so happy I came into the store rather than order online!! Such friendly service and as soon as you walk in you are hit with the aroma of jerk sauce. We ordered Jerk chicken, Rasta Pasta with shrimp, and the curry pumpkin and chick pea. Everything was amazing but our favorite was the curry pumpkin. The heat level on everything was perfect for me. I usually enjoy a homemade jerk chicken or rib with plenty of Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning (Hot) if that helps you judge. The Rasta pasta was a little on the hot side, but the sweet from the curry pumpkin evened it out nicely.

Ordered online. Food was ready for pick up quickly. It was hot and delicious. We like spicy and it was just that. I thought the serving size was large. We had the jerk chicken with peas and rice. It is our go to Jamaica cuisine. We will order again.

I am glad to see a genuine Caribbean food establishment in the LBC again. I will definitely be supporting it. Now, this isn't "fast food". Expect a wait of at least 20 minutes depending on what you order. Unsure if you can call in your order. Unfamiliar with Caribbean food? They have jerk chicken for you. I recommend going with the roti, curry chicken. Curry chicken was full of chicken and was delicious. chicken has bones. Roti is the best thing to try. Roti was hot and scrumptious. Get at least a Roti on the side. Had a beef patty too. Roughly $30. Well worth the wait. Try the tropical punch. Ask for hotsauce for extra flavor. Will be going back. Vegan dishes available. Check to make sure you have everything you ordered before leaving.

I had a taste for some oxtails and I live in Lakewood. So I Google Caribbean restaurants that were close to me and this place came up. I ordered online which was very simple and easy. The prices are competitive or comparable to other restaurants like this and I was very satisfied with the quality and freshness and the amount of the food that was given. I will be back.

Gotta love me some Jamaican patties. The beef patty was great, packed with flavor and a good amount of beef for the $6 price tag. I was supposed to eat the curry chicken but my husband accidentally stole it. I also got the jerk chicken and it was packed with flavor as well as a little spice to it too! We'll be back whenever we're in the area.

Today was my first time and BABYYYYY they did not disappoint. I had their curry chicken patties and they were sooooooo good. I was hesitant because I’m such a picky eater but it was so good! I’ll be taking my family here soon! Love it!

Came in on a gloomy Saturday afternoon, I was greeted with a smile. It is very obvious that it's a family restaurant and that flavors reflect that. Inside it's rather intimate but I was able to get a table with no problem. I ordered the Oxtails which were tender the ackee and salt fish which was so awesome with their housemade hot sauce. Roti skin, All three choices of the Jamaican patties, those were hard to save for later. The plantains balanced out the pepper and back heat from the Oxtails really perfectly. I finished my meal with a Sorel drink that tasted like the holidays. The food here is made with love and you can taste it with every spoonful
