Long Beach’s Bigmista’s Barbecue Calls It Quits in Wild Blog Post | Eater LA

"After years of serving ribs, pulled pork, brisket and more at farmers markets, on television and at barbecue competitions nationwide, I’m sad to say the namesake Long Beach restaurant run by Neil “Bigmista” Strawder is closing its doors on July 1. Neil and his wife and co-owner Phyllis Strawder will be behind the counter for that final day, then plan to move east for parts unknown. Phyllis—who has never been one to shy away from controversy—explained in a blog post that they’re leaving simply “Because we’re grown and we can,” and described a contentious lease fight in which they tried to break the lease, considered letting the landlord evict them, and ultimately decided to pay what’s owed so they can move on. The couple had already closed a sister restaurant earlier this year, blaming tough parking and only enough cash flow to keep them afloat, so there are only a few weeks left to enjoy their barbecue before the July 1 final day." - Farley Elliott

I am so happy I came into the store rather than order online!! Such friendly service and as soon as you walk in you are hit with the aroma of jerk sauce. We ordered Jerk chicken, Rasta Pasta with shrimp, and the curry pumpkin and chick pea. Everything was amazing but our favorite was the curry pumpkin. The heat level on everything was perfect for me. I usually enjoy a homemade jerk chicken or rib with plenty of Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning (Hot) if that helps you judge. The Rasta pasta was a little on the hot side, but the sweet from the curry pumpkin evened it out nicely.

Google
Ordered online. Food was ready for pick up quickly. It was hot and delicious. We like spicy and it was just that. I thought the serving size was large. We had the jerk chicken with peas and rice. It is our go to Jamaica cuisine. We will order again.

Brett S.

Google
Had the jerk chicken and it was pretty dry and not very flavourful, except for the sweet chilli sauce it had poured on it. I’m not sure if that’s traditional for Caribbean food but I really didn’t like that combo. The pattys were nice and the service was great.

If I could give a 0 I would just off customer service. I called 4 times before arriving no one answered I get there the guy comes to the front with an attitude frown on his face before I even opened my mouth. I said hi I’ve been calling no one answered the phone to place an order, he replies I don’t have time to answer the phone nothing is ready the lady is not here to answer the phone and I don’t have time. He then proceeded to say come back in 20 minutes. I told him I’m on my lunch and don’t work close to the restaurant so I can wait and place my order he had a attitude about that also he then asked what did i want to order I let him know he then told me they don’t even have what I wanted to order and nothing is ready. I just walked out at that point because I be damn if I spend my money and my employees money at a place like this where customer service is horrible it’s a no for me and I will never send anyone to this establishment.

Google
I am glad to see a genuine Caribbean food establishment in the LBC again. I will definitely be supporting it. Now, this isn't "fast food". Expect a wait of at least 20 minutes depending on what you order. Unsure if you can call in your order. Unfamiliar with Caribbean food? They have jerk chicken for you. I recommend going with the roti, curry chicken. Curry chicken was full of chicken and was delicious. chicken has bones. Roti is the best thing to try. Roti was hot and scrumptious. Get at least a Roti on the side. Had a beef patty too. Roughly $30. Well worth the wait. Try the tropical punch. Ask for hotsauce for extra flavor. Will be going back. Vegan dishes available. Check to make sure you have everything you ordered before leaving.

Google
Today was my first time and BABYYYYY they did not disappoint. I had their curry chicken patties and they were sooooooo good. I was hesitant because I’m such a picky eater but it was so good! I’ll be taking my family here soon! Love it!

Sara G.

Google
Came in on a gloomy Saturday afternoon, I was greeted with a smile. It is very obvious that it's a family restaurant and that flavors reflect that. Inside it's rather intimate but I was able to get a table with no problem. I ordered the Oxtails which were tender the ackee and salt fish which was so awesome with their housemade hot sauce. Roti skin, All three choices of the Jamaican patties, those were hard to save for later. The plantains balanced out the pepper and back heat from the Oxtails really perfectly. I finished my meal with a Sorel drink that tasted like the holidays. The food here is made with love and you can taste it with every spoonful

Ale C.

Google
I had a taste for some oxtails and I live in Lakewood. So I Google Caribbean restaurants that were close to me and this place came up. I ordered online which was very simple and easy. The prices are competitive or comparable to other restaurants like this and I was very satisfied with the quality and freshness and the amount of the food that was given. I will be back.

Yelp
I'm glad that they finally have a Carribean Restuarant in the Long Beach area! They have nice sized portions. We both got the oxtails, cabbage with rice and peas! They gave me a test sample of both the jerk season sauce and curry that they use. Both are a bit spicy but I did like the taste on the curry and I think my next trip may include that !! The gentleman in there was so nice and accommodating. And I must say their kitchen is soo clean made me want to run home and clean again!! I was too full to try the desserts so I'll leave that to y'all and please report back!! I give them 3.5 stars cause they don't offer in store dining.

Yelp
I am so sad to be leaving this review. I ordered via DoorDash and it was 8-8:30pm so the business may have possibly been closing down. I provide that information because sadly, the food tasted as if I was served the portions of chicken curry, cabbage, and mixed vegetables that had been sitting in the pots all day or had been reheated from previous days. This truly hurt my hurt as it has been a long time coming for a Caribbean restaurant to arrive in Long Beach. The chicken curry lacked balanced flavor due to it sitting and seemed to have more and more curry added and no other spices to play on the notes from the chicken. So it was just an overcooked, concentrated, high sodium, scotch bonnet(ed), abused curry with meat that was struggling to maintain its right to be chicken but the flavors of chicken had been executed. Second, spoiled cabbage anyone? I knew it as soon as I opened it. It smelled of cabbage that had been forced to over stay its welcome and by the portion size, I was to see the extra servings of it as an award but it just turned into a punishment. I truly believe, or at least want to, believe this was an off day and whoever permitted the "last of.." to be served was just off their game and will read this review and never make these mistakes again. I believe in you and am definitely willing to give this restaurant another try in the future. For now I need to take some time and recover. But please, I rooting for you, believe in you, and know that your love for the food and culture will step back up to the high quality standards it created!

Yelp
If you're looking for some real authentic Caribbean food then you need to make sure you stop here! We had the pleasure of eating: 1. chicken and beef patties 2. Oxtails with cabbage and rice&peas 3. Jerk Cauliflower with cabbage and rice&peas 4. Jerk Chicken with cabbage and rice&peas 5. Curry chicken with cabbage and rice&peas 6. Lobster Mac and cheese 7. Plantains Everything was delicious and filling! Great flavor and they use real lobster meat for the Mac n cheese! Be mindful that this place is cook to order ( besides the patties ) so that means there will be a slight wait but it's HONESTLY WORTH it. Sitting is limited but if you have opportunity to eat it there I would do it ! Great place to eat dinner! Will be back to try that Rasta pasta!

Yelp
Lunch today with the work crew! We ordered when we arrived. Terrika (sp) the host was helpful and pleasant. I inquired about the food spice level and she let me sample the sauce for the jerk chicken. I ordered the jerk chicken, someone ordered the curry chicken, another the wings and honey garlic sauce and lastly, the beef patty and buffalo wings. They had limited seating but enough for the 4 of us. It may have taken 10 minutes for our order to be prepared. It was served in to-go microwave safe packaging . We were told they're not a dine-in restaurant. We were able to enjoy our food there per the hostess. The 5 of us didn't talk while we literally devoured our food. It was that delicious and the portions huge. I asked for water as the food definitely had a welcoming kick of flavor! We were happy to receive bottled (complimentary) water. Although, they were not busy they had a constant stream of customers. The restaurant is small and cozy. The TV was set to music videos and set at a perfect volume to still enjoy your food and chat. I must add I was a little disappointed that the plantains did not come with the meal. It would be similar to having soul food and no cornbread muffin or Mexican food and no chips and salsa. Maybe, a small portion of plantains can be considered for dinners. Still the experience was 10/10. Lastly, unfortunately they don't take cash due to a robbery and the register was taken. As a result, the only payment method accepted is a credit/debit card. Attached to the payment method is a 3% convenience fee and Long Beach sales tax is 10.25%. There you have it! I will still return to enjoy the other menu items .

Yelp
Omg I ordered this on UberEats and I didn't even finish my first bite and had to put everything down to leave this review. The portions are GINORMOUS! And they're currently doing a buy 1 get 1 free deal. we're going to order and freeze them lol! Thanks guys!

Yelp
The food here is phenomenal. It has bold genuine Jamaican flavors. The oxtails were delicious, tender and juicy. I have only had better jerk chicken right off the grill on the beach in Jamaica! Just the right amount of spice, heat and sweetness. So GOOD. I will absolutely eat here again and again.

Yelp
I've following this spot since b4 they actually opened in Lb. I'm constantly searching for some good Jamaican locally, and finally I have and it's only 15 mins from my home. There was much to choose from. I asked for a recommendation between the jerk chicken and jerk shrimp. The guy at the register said shrimp (but he's a vegetarian) then he asked sm1 in the back, and they too said "jerk shrimp" Well they did not lie. The Jerk shrimp was just the amount of spicy w/ a sweet undertone. I typically don't like the cabbage salad w/Jamaican dishes; but this was good. My husband ordered the oxtails and curry goat. He said his was good too. We also got a side of plantains. Now I'm used to the plantains being included; and I typically like them thinner and crispier; but I must say they were better than anticipated. It's a small little spot w/about 6 tables and tables outside. We were gonna eat there but it was hell hot and there was only a fan in the restaurant. I will definitely return.

Yelp
Someone recommended this place on TikTok, so we wanted to check it out since we love love love Caribbean food. The service was great, everyone was nice and friendly. The concept is a little different: we were served our food in to-go containers, which they explained when we sat down. We actually appreciated this, it saved time at the end of our meal since we could just pop the lid on our leftovers and head out. If you're someone who prefers plated food, this might not be the spot for you. There are only two tables inside, but we were able to sit and eat. The food was very tasty and seasoned really well! The shrimp curry, cabbage, rice & peas, and plantains were my favorites. The jerk shrimp was a bit too spicy for my husband, but he enjoyed the grilled flavor and eventually pushed through the heat. Overall, a great experience! Next time, we'll ask if they can tone down the spice on the jerk. Thank you for the tasty food!

Yelp
Strange all the negative reviews, I thought this place was great. I was actually going somewhere else for lunch but they were still closed 30 minutes after their open time. I went on yelp bookmarks and sorted by distance and found this restaurant was only a few miles away. I headed on over and saw it's located where Big Mista's used to be. I arrived 5 minutes early but right on the second of their posted hours they opened the door. Was 90 outside but inside was nicely air conditioned. There's about 4 tables inside and some patio tables outside. Most of the customers were takeout orders. Service was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered the jerked salmon which came with a mixture of cabbage, carrots, onions, and green beans. Also came with a mixture of rice and beans. It's hard to tell from pictures but the portion is huge. Giant cut of salmon with the skin on served on top of giant portion of the sides. The packaging is microwave safe so perfect for takeout and reheating leftovers. It smelled amazing and looked delicious. Luckily it tasted just as good. The jerk sauce isn't as spicy as other places I've tried it but just enough to burn your tongue without ruining your tastebuds. I loved every single bite. The salmon must be pan fried because it has a nice crispy exterior while being moist on the inside. The side dishes were delicious too and I ate every bite. They had a lot of unique Caribbean bottled and canned drinks I've never heard of but I went with their homemade fruit punch which brought out my inner child. To finish I tried their homemade rum cake. Very moist white cake saturated with rum flavors and topped with a thick rich vanilla frosting. I loved it and was a great way to end a fantastic lunch! I can't wait to return and try some more stuff! The only negative which almost caused me to give 4 stars is they had a hidden 3% fee for using my credit card. I did not see any signage warning me and I didn't know until looking at my receipt later. Since I'm not 100% sure there's no sign somewhere I'll let it slide but be warned. Sales taxes here is 10.75% so tacking on the 3% + tip makes for one expensive meal.

Yelp
I don't know why this is under 4 stars, it is amazing. I will start that I ordered delivery so I can't comment on Ambiance but can comment on this amazing food! I will also say this review is over 2 orders not just 1 and ranking didn't change. We took advantage of the BOGO Jerk Chicken which was a great deal. I love me some oxtails so we had to get that as well. We also ordered the Coco Bread, Plantain, Roti, festival, wings (honey garlic sauce) and red velvet cake. Again over 2 orders, but it was a lot of food, so judge all you want. Jerk chicken has great flavor and spice. Not too much for my husband who is sensitive to spice; he had no issue. You can choose 2 sides, cabbage and rice/peas. We did 1 of each both times and it was wonderful. Tender chicken, fresh sides and great flavor across the board. With 2 dishes for $30 it is a great deal. Oxtails were some of the best I have had and I cook and eat them whenever I can! Great flavor and very tender. Some people rush an oxtail and these are perfectly stewed. Same side options so we stuck with 1 of each. I found it well priced for that cut and serving size at $32. I have had it cheaper and more expensive but I really liked this value to flavor ratio. Plantains standard and well cooked. Not much to do but ordered them both times so says something. I think $7 ish and would order again. Coco bread and roti were new to me but both good. Roti a savory flat bread, think thinner and denser naan, intended to eat with your food. Coco bread a bit sweet but not a dessert, think hawaiian sweet roll but denser. Only ordered the first time since wanted to try new things but both were tasty. Wings with garlic honey sauce well done, were damn good wings. I am a dry rub kind of girl but these have me switching sides. Fresh and great even after being delivered about 4 mi away, that says a lot and would order again. It think $12 for 6, $18 for 12...ish Festival was also fresh. This is a friend bread dumpling, it was perfectly cooked, not too greasy and hot upon delivery. Huge positive and since I love Festival I would order again for sure. $7 ish for 3. Red velvet cake was an accident wanted to try rum cake but not mad. It was moist and great flavor. Tastes homemade or at least very fresh so big unexpected win and would order again. $7 ish Beef patty! This was the whole reason I came here, first time sold out, 2nd time, boy was I lucky! Perfect flaky crust and well seasoned tender beef filling. It is a go to for sure, I think $6 ish each and they have a few flavors. Order again every time!!!! So good, one of my favorites! Looking forward to try in person but for you delivery people it is great quality and service and worth trying! Try something new and give it a shot.

Yelp
One of the best Caribbean restaurants ever!! Took my daughter for her 16th bday as requested and it was delicious with amazing service from all. Thank you for making it so special for my daughter

Yelp
Was excited to try this restaurant but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The food was okay, it was lowkey lacking salt. The rice didn't really have flavor but overall I'd rate the food a 6/10. Edible but not my favorite oxtail plate. They do, however, give great portions. The location and restaurant itself is very clean and very comfortable. Servicing employees were very professional.

Yelp
Me and my Daughter decided to hit this place up.... ( order food from here) There was a family in the dining area and no one in line so we went straight to ordering. The young lady asked if this was our first time and we said yes. She was extremely patient with us. We ordered quite a few things -Curry chicken plate ( Rice & peas, steamed veggies) -Jerk Chicken plate ( Rice & peas, veggies) -Side of plantain ( pronounced like MOUNTAIN with a "P") -Beef patty -curry Chx patty And coco bread Everything was delicious... nice and spicy ands flavorful ( just enough kick) , the chicken was moist the plantain was semi firm and sweet just how I like it.... My daughter loved the curry and the potatoes were just right not mushy at all! My only hang up was that it was hot as hell in the lobby, well that day itself was a hot one but it gave us a chance to sit outside. It was a bit of a wait But!! When dealing with good food there's always a wait, trust me you won't be Disappointed. Thank you everyone for the experience

Yelp
I've gotten take out from Taste of the Caribbean several times since discovering this place earlier this year. My in-laws are Jamaican so I'm accustomed to what most of the menu items should taste like. What I liked: Lobster Mac n cheese, the beef patties, the rice and peas. The curry goat dish was solid with good flavor, my only gripe was the potatoes and everything was kinda mushy like it had been overcooked. What I didn't like: The jerk chicken (wasn't want I'm used to. I prefer more of a char/smoked taste), the Rasta pasta. The service can be a bit slow, even if you order ahead but the staff seem nice.
google avatar

EnVme D.

Yelp
The plates are getting smaller and smaller and the service is getting worse. Can we please get a decent. Caribbean food spot that actually takes care of the people. The jerk sauce is hella spicy, the salmon was over cooked and all the sides were tiny. The plate was much smaller and the food price went up.
google avatar

Jenae S.

Yelp
First of all this is more of a quick service vibe. It's tiny in there with a few tables. It's pretty warm in there, so we were grateful to sit outside Meat Pattie's were good. Beef and chicken. Decent. Warning: beef is a smidge spicy for some The shrimp curry was good but I'm had just a few shrimp and no potatoes (roti "really good" -nephew) Chicken curry was received well my the table. My salt fish was really good!!! Like, gooooood!!!! The rice was fine and cabbage was good. Service was SLOW but they're nice Nephew re/ service : "A little slow but the guy was goated"

Yelp
Nice to have Taste of the Caribbean open a new location in LB! Most items are made to order, so call in ahead of time. A party of 8 of us went and we practically filled the entire place. It took at least 30 minutes for our orders, but they were pretty slammed when we were there. It's still their soft-opening, so they have some kinks to work out, but I also know Chef Bernard is not new to the industry. Hope they improve their system of keeping their orders straight. Nonetheless, the food is so worth the wait!! Chef Bernard, from Guyana, established himself in NY and LA to share the rich flavors and spices of Caribbean cuisine. He offers a pretty extensive menu of curries, Jamaican patties, jerk dishes, roti, pasta, oxtail, and of course, Ackee & Saltfish. I tried the Veggie Patty, Jerk Salmon, Lobster Mac n Cheese, and Curry Goat Roti. The Veggie Patty, Jerk Salmon and Curry Goat were nicely seasoned and spicy. The Lobster Mac was rich and cheesy with decent chunks of lobster. They offer a 10% off deal with Yelp Check-In or free patties with orders over $50. I'll be back for the Jerk Chicken and Oxtail!

Yelp
Long Beach now has a Jamaican restaurant in the house and to say I'm excited and happy about this is an understatement this is a true down home authentic Jamaican restaurant and the menu reflects that soo well they have oxtails whole fried red snapper a variety of Rasta pastas a bunch of curry dishes patties and soo much. The ambiance is casual the vibe is cool and the staff is very welcoming. First off all your greated by a Jamaican woman accent flawless ready to take your order. I ordered Ackee & Salt Fish two Beef Pattie's chicken patty and veggie patty a Coco Bread and a Ting grapefruit soda. Ackee and salt fish Served with sautéed cabbage and rice and peas the portion was small and the flavor was spicy cooked with onions tomatoes and spices served with rice and peas I put a few dashes of their homemade pepper sauce and jerk sauce on my food and it had a very good taste but be aware that this dish is a little bit salty because its made of salted fish but it was soo soo good - my order had a few tiny fish bones and I almost swallowed a few so please eat this where it's well lit so you can pick them out this deliciousness was 5/5 stars Rice & peas a small portion and the rice and peas were a bit saucy I'm used to eating a drier rice but overall it was good and tasty. 4/5 stars Coco Bread was hot and soft and although it smelled good it didn't have much flavor but I'm sure if I had eaten this with saucy oxtails or a curry dish it would be much better dipped into something. 4/5 stars Beef patty The dough was nice and flakey it looked great and tasted good it just needs some spicy heat and the homemade pepper sauce helped kicked it up a notch. 4/5 stars Veggie patty This dough was more dense and thick filled with corn carrots and onions seasoned well almost savory it tasted good and this gal has never eaten a veggie patty made with this blend of veggies meat eaters and vegetarians will find this tasty. 4/5 stars Curry chicken patty Awesome flakey crust ground chicken seasoned with herbs and spices and a mild curry flavor it's so good. 5/5 stars Pepper sauce $10 It has a nice taste it's spicy not too hot and it's good. Very good. ! Jerk sauce $10 A nice taste with a kick and it's very good. Overall This restaurant is a bit pricy with smaller portions each item that I'm used to being included in the meal - is also a separate charge examples boiled banana and dumplings or a fried festival are not included in dinner meals so things can add up very fast but it's still doable I will definitely come back and try the shrimp rasta pasta red snapper curry goat roti and those delectable oxtails. . My meal with w/ting plus 15% tip was $65.00 - adding coco bread was another $4 and two bottles of homade sauces $20.00 for a grand total of $109.00 spent This was the most expensive single order I have ever purchased from a Jamaican restaurant in over 30 years. Ackee & salt fish 2 beef patties 1 curry chicken patty 1 veggie patty 1 Coco bread Ting Pepper sauce & Jerk sauce I have eaten at Jamaican Restaurants well over 30 years and I cook Jamaican food as well so I know that taste is subjective however I'd still recommend that you eat at this restaurant it's a good vibe clean and located on an awesome block near a lot of shops come by visit and show support.

Yelp
Saw this place on Instagram and thought it would be nice to stop by. Wow! Really happy I did. Today was their grand opening and even with all rush of such a day the service was kind and friendly. The interior dining is still being worked on but you can see it's going to look inviting. I ordered the jerk chicken plate that's served with rice and peas along with a steam cabbage salad for $18. Not only do you get a lot for the price, but it tastes real good too. Quick and easy drive from the 405 freeway. Plenty of parking. Looking forward to return again and again to try the rest of their delicious looking menu.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the service was great and the ambiance was cozy. I have to admit that the pricing is on the high side but the food is well worth it. I'm glad that I don't have to drive all the way out to LA to get some good Caribbean food. The curry goat was delicious and full of flavor, the jerk chicken pasta was good but heavy on the salt. I wish the slaw was a bit more on the creamy/flavorful side but it tasted healthy. The hot sauce was in all sense of the word! Spicy and oh so good! I want to try the oxtail next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, nice menu selection Pretty pricey reasonably portion First time I differently will go again
google avatar

Yelp
Decent food. I got the jerk chicken plate and the plantains. All for $24. Plenty of parking out front and they have an immense amount of options to choose from on the menu. The chicken itself was quite dry with plenty of bones inside. Flavorful with some spice however. Then plantains were something I really enjoyed. Not too sweet and didn't seem to be heavy on the oil. Thank you for the food !

Yelp
Taste of The Caribbean, not necessary a place to eat in house, most orders are to go (take out). I have to admit tho, the flavors are like outta this world, North America, Pacific Ocean world that is (haha). Seriously, you gotta try.

Yelp
This food is so good I literally cannot stop telling everyone I know. I was so happy to find a Caribbean food spot in my area and had to give it a try. First off, the service was great. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the food options, portions, and spice levels. The location is well decorated and welcoming. It feels like you're going to eat at momma's spot in the islands! The Oxtail Rasta Pasta, Jerk Chicken, and Curry Goat was mouth-wateringly good. Flavor and Spices on point! The patties...Oh my... best I've ever had in the states and the islands. I've gone twice and left happy. I will be back soon to get 2 Beef Patties and Rasta Pasta because it's that good. Support this business so they can keep Long Beach flavorful!

Yelp
I'd like to start this review by saying the woman who served us made this experience completely worthwhile. She was attentive, helpful, and just a genuinely nice person. I ordered the oxtail, it was flavorful in a Caribbean way. You could taste the different layers of flavor in the meat and the gravy. The oxtail was tender and the meat to fat ratio was excellent. Wasn't super chewy and hot as if it was made to order. While the oxtail was the star of the show, the rice and peas and cabbage medley didn't miss a beat. The rice and peas were fluffy and complimented the oxtail gravy. The cabbage medley wasn't mushy or bland. This food tasted like someone put thought into the demographic that they'd be cooking for. It tastes like it was prepared at home and was gonna be served to family, that's a quality many restaurants can't say they have. I'll be back to this restaurant.

Yelp
Food was so good. I had the Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken and Beef Patty. How have I never known this place was 5 mins from my house. I think they opened the LBC location about 8 months ago. Anywho, do yourself a favor and try this place for sure. Service was great. Staff is super polite and helpful with recommendations. Place is small and charming with good vibes and good music. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Went here today and got beef patties bc I was craving them and didn't want to drive all the way to Inglewood . Disappointed to say the least . No flavor they just taste like ground beef . Just I'll have to drive to get the flavor I'm looking for

Yelp
To see the food, watch my vlog: https://youtu.be/uZM_5WkUNXc A couple of friends and I went to Taste of the Caribbean for a galentine's dinner. I ordered the curry shrimp, rice and peas, with a side of extra plantain. Everything was so good and I cleaned my plate. My friend ordered the oxtail with rice and peas and the cocoa bread. My other friend got the rice and peas plate with fried plantains and it was phenomenal. The restaurant was a little small but the music was fantastic. It is more of a take-out kind of feel but you are more than able to sit and eat there. They have up to date electronics and the riddim dancehall music is always on point. I will definitely come back to this place for dinner.

Yelp
Food was seasoned to perfection! Made to order which was very appreciative! Customer service was divine! Love the reveals of the Jamaican culture inside of the storefront will be back to try more dishes on the menu!

Yelp
Second time in two weeks I've tried to come during open posted hours and they are closed. Food looks good, but who knows. If they are ever open during posted hours and I get to try the food I'll update, but I don't imagine I'll be trying again any time soon. I'd call before driving over. Made that mistake twice.

Yelp
Great food even though the jerk might need more bonnet peppers . Easy to order as it is set up in To-go style like most restaurants are these days.

Yelp
I'll start with I'm a Jamaican and we can be a little hard to please when it comes to Caribbean food. I waited a day because I wanted to give a fair review. Yelp states this business opens at 11:30. I arrived at 11:32 and the door was open. When I approached the register a young man politely told me that they will be open at 12. By this point I checked in and glanced an offer but had to leave (BTW you cannot check in more than once in a 3 hour window). While I was getting ready to pull off two women approached a now locked door. I returned back at 12:01 and the restaurant was packed. Not in line to order, I mean people sitting down with full meals and the ladies that walked up behind me were yes enjoying their meal. I'm going to highlight the good now. Everything that comes out of the kitchen is beautifully plated and they use actual utensils, so they are not polluting our landfills. Now time to place my to go order because 30+ minutes have passed. I mentioned to the young lady that I could not pull up the code for my 10% off and she was kind enough to honor it. I mentioned to her that Yelp lists their open time as 11:30am and they should change it. Her response was that they drive from LA so sometime traffic delays them getting there. Not a good response; as a business make necessary accommodations to arrive early and be ready for business. I ordered the veggie patty and vegetable roti. I waited 15 minutes for it to come out which I thought long. Jamaicans like patties piping hot so I opening it when I got in the car. It lacked color and flakiness. I tasted it and the filling flavor was ok but as you can see the back was burned and hard. The roti was actually pretty good. I forgot to take pics of it. The filling came in a container and the dhal puri was in a paper bag. I would have preferred it to have been wrapped in store. Will I go back ? I will, but no time in the near future. This restaurant appears to still be working out the kinks so I will afford them time to do so before returning. I wouldn't recommend the patties but the roti is a winner.

Yelp
Was so very excited to try out this restaurant, but sadly it was such a disappointment. Came in before dinner rush, man with coconut drink in his hand (chef/owner who I've seen on instagram ) rudely walked passed me without greeting and yelled out to BOH that there were customers coming in and walked out. Young man who took our order was very nice, and very polite . We ordered oxtails that was not even worth $36, goat curry (which was very tasty), jerk chicken that was obviously pre-grilled earlier that day cause it was just way too dry and then the salmon that tasted off, freezer burnt. Both salmon and chicken were overly smothered with jerk sauce. Rice and Veggies were the saviors for this meal. I work in the food industry (30 years, executive chef), I love supporting small businesses, and I understand food cost and rent are super high, but first impressions for a newly opened restaurant/business is very important. Hoping it was just one of those days for them, we all have them. Why am I complaining? It's because of the amount of money I spent $196 for 5 people $40 a person, for food that was not worth it . Hoping owners step up , and support their kitchen /prep team they are the backbone, if that's done the food and service will be better.

Yelp
Food is great, but the wait time is crazy. Also if you check in on Yelp there's a 10% coupon that can be redeemed, but they said I had to spend over $50. Which isn't mentioned anywhere on the coupon. They did accommodate me with a patty, which was delicious. Small dinning area, not made for large groups. The food is worth the wait, so all in all I do recommend you try this Caribbean restaurant in Long Beach.

Yelp
My boyfriend decided to grab lunch for me and I had been eyeing this place on social media, so I sent him there. I was craving oxtail but they unfortunately had sold out the day prior so I went with the jerk chicken. (The only reason I took one star away on my rating). When I say the first bite blew my mind, I truly mean that. I rarely feel satisfied with any caribbean/jamaican restaurant being that I am a chef. I have yet to have any jerk chicken, curry chicken or oxtail taste as good as mine or what I had in Jamaica. This place is it. They do not hold back on the spice (which is how jerk should be), I have a high spice tolerance and loved it. The seasonings were perfect and there was a hint of sweet to balance out the spiciness. As someone who just moved to the west coast from the east coast a little over a month ago, I'm happy I found this place. Will definitely be back to try the oxtail next!

Yelp
We finally decided to try this place! I have been following on IG and oh wow I'm so happy we came! Food was fantastic! The curry chicken on point and the jerk chicken spicy and delicious too! We ordered some plantains on the side and the kola champagne. We met chef Bernard who graciously gave me fresh pineapple ginger juice to try it out. Yummy! Currently the food is in to go bags/containers but we still were able to eat there. They have maybe 4 tables inside so it's small. We are bringing some patties home so we will try those later on. I truly hope this place expands and never leaves Long Beach! If you are reading this, do yourself a favor and go check them out asap!

Yelp
How do you run out of beef patties before you are open? I placed an order on uber eats at 10 or so in the morning order confirmed at 1132 then my order was cancelled and beef patties were removed from the menu on uber eats. This would have been my second order, the first time I was able to order them and they were tasty.

Yelp
Have been waiting for a Caribbean spot to open up close to me for the longest time. I've been living in Cali for 2 years and every Caribbean spot I could find is all the way in DTLA. Was so excited to try this place the moment it opened up. Food was amazing and took me back. Patty was delicious, oxtail was fall off the bone. My husband got the ackee and saltfish which he enjoyed. Portion sizes were perfect. Sorrel was perfect and seamoss was creamy just how I like it. Would def recommend. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
First time visiting, I chose the Jerk Chicken with veggies, rice and peas. Everything was so good.

Yelp
Maybe I just caught this place on a bad day. Oxtails Were NOT SEASONED! Instead of the seasoning it appears they were cooked/ juice marinated in a sweet flavoring . Oxtails are not suppose to be sweet. So this was horrible. All specialty entrees should be served with planteens instead of a separate fee. Prompt service tho! Maybe that's why the oxtails were trash, it appears a rush job was done on them.

Yelp
I have a special place in my stomach for Jerk Chicken. When I found this hole in the wall I was hoping for some authentic jerk. They delivered! Unique menu items and classics. People working there give you that happy Caribbean vibe. Fine dining no, but who needs it when you got the family kitchen environment with great food. Stand out dish: besides the obvious jerk chicken, I'll say the oxtail

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a whim to try it. We aren't too familiar with Caribbean food but we were pleasantly surprised. The place itself is quite small and the atmosphere is okay - it looks like it's more of a place that does to-go orders. You order at the counter. There's not much space to sit down, but we did sit and eat there. The worker was nice and explained the menu to us. The food was good. The jerk chicken is pretty spicy. Don't order it if you can't handle spice. My husband likes spicy food so he had no problem with it. I got the chicken curry roti. Both chicken dishes are on the bone. The roti is a bit messy because you have to use your hands to rip the pieces and dip it. Overall, we enjoyed it. We will come back and try more things.

Yelp
$100 oxtail, fish, 2 patties. Oxtail and fish both chewy fish was way over cooked and a laughable small portion. Had to salt the food....lacking so much flavor I can't wrap my head around $100. Crazy spending fine dinning money you'd expect greatness at a whole in the wall. And didn't give a sauce for the fish they wanted to charge $1 for. Service was great, the cashier was amazing but I feel like I got robbed

Yelp
Came here to try this place out finally but they only serve the food in plastic to go containers. I don't eat like that because putting hot food in plastic is proven to make the plastic melt into the food. No self respecting foodie eats out of plastic for dine in. Won't be back sorry not sorry.

Yelp
Chef was very friendly and welcoming. This was my second visit, the first time I tried the goat, and it was very good, just wished it was spicier. On my second trip, I tried jerk chicken, it was very good and spicy. I'm glad he's near my house.

Yelp
Food is good, service is slow when placing phone orders they don't make the order until you arrive. Ambiance good and welcoming.

Yelp
This is the second time I've had Caribbean and I must say I think this is the first time I've had Authentic Caribbean!! Wait was maybe 15 Minutes and that I do not mind because I know my food was freshly made. We got the Ox Tail and rice, Ox Tail and pasta, and the Lobster Mac n Cheese. The food was AMAZING!! The OxTail fell right off the bone, the seasoning was delicious. Lobster Mac n cheese had a nice amount of Lobster and was really good. Finished off with the plantains, and they were cooked perfectly. This place did not disappoint at all and is a must try. We will be going back. I wish I would have taken pictures of the food before we demolished it.
