"This Northside restaurant isn’t just a soul food spot — it’s a community hub with deep roots. Housed in the former Bell Brothers Cafeteria and owned by Winston-Salem native Sabrina Wingo, the cafeteria-style restaurant is known for its Southern comfort classics. Think crispy fried chicken, ultra-creamy mac and cheese, fall-off-the-bone oxtails, slow-cooked meatloaf, and vegetable sides that hit a perfect balance of smoky and savory. Desserts like peach cobbler, red velvet, and lemon meringue made by the loving hands of Wingo’s mother keep people coming back. The dining room is full of vibrant murals, Black-inspired art, and a palpable sense of community, making it a go-to for homestyle cooking with a side of Southern hospitality." - Nikki Miller-Ka

After hearing about this place at a conference at WFU, it’s been on my list of local places to check out. My only regret is that I didn’t go sooner! I had the meatloaf, mixed greens, mac & cheese, and broccoli rice casserole. All were delicious. The greens were sweeter than my grandmas, but still had good flavor. The Mac and Cheese was all the things it should have been- crisp crust on top and cheesy gooey goodness all throughout. The meatloaf stole the show. It was a flavorful, savory meat combo topped with a sauce that had the perfect hint of heat mixed into the traditional tang of tomato. The portion was plentiful and I had enough to bring home for a small sandwich for dinner. The cornbread muffin was moist and spot-on… no dry, crumbly tastelessness in sight with that one! The cafeteria style line for food selection was quick and efficient, and the waitress who served our drinks at the table and cared for us was very polite and helpful. While I regret not coming sooner, I will most definitely be coming back! This is a hidden gem in Winston-Salem!!

Google
1st time here (May 2, 2025) nice atmosphere and the customer service was GREAT. Most importantly, the FOOD IS delicious! I “complain” a lot and consider myself a food critic. I can honestly say I have NO complaints. I’d definitely recommend & I will come again if I’m ever in the area. Thanks for the delicious lunch today.

Google
Ok so me and a friend came to Taste of the Triad for the first time today let me tell you we meant the beautiful Queen and her husband that are the owners of the business and nothing but "Love" And good beautiful vibes from them beautiful people, let tell y'all the food was great you could taste the southern soul in the food. I got ribs potato salad and yams and green beans and corn that plate tasted damn near almost like my cooking. My momma passed away 5 yrs ago and I miss her cooking and the taste of the Triad took me home with that plate I had to give them their roses on that food I will be back

Saw the ad on Facebook Saturday night said I wanted to try it woke up Sunday morning drove 2 hours and let me tell you this place is the truth that 2 hour drive was well worth it I will definitely be coming back I gotta try everything on the menu today was chitterlings, oxtails and rice, potato salad, and cornbread dressing with gravy and can't forget the banana pudding and I'm sorry I forgot the lady name that did the chitterlings next time just put your foot in them you didn't have to go up to your knee 😂 almost wanted to drive to Florida and slap my mother 😂 oh and let's not forget about the absolute friendliest and professional staff I've ever been around today is June 8th 2025 thanks for everything and if you read this and don't mind taking a day road trip this is the spot trust me you won't be disappointed

Google
I ordered two separate plates, one of which was baked chicken. The other was beef ribs baked chicken was fine but the beef ribs was SEMI fine for whatever reason they were extremely extremely fatty. They left the membrane on the ribs ( I think that’s what they call it ) …very fatty. As far as my sides go. I ordered mac & cheese on both plates candy yams on one and collard greens on the other mac & cheese was extremely salty and soupy like not cheesy, but it was definitely extremely salty. The yams were fine. Those were good the collard greens They were OK. They didn’t have any flavor to them at all, but they were edible. Oh, and I also got potato salad. That was really good. It was heavy on the relish, but it was still very good.

Google
The Taste Of Traid Owner Ms. Sabrina & Her Employees has a great awesome demeanor. If, you search for a black-owned southern american food cuisine within Winston-Salem, NC. The restaurant maintains beautiful morals of black famous local or non-local public figures. This could be an awesome place for birthdays, graduations, receptions, etc.

Google
The food and service at The Taste of the Triad were both excellent! It was well worth the drive from S.C. My grandson and his friend had hearty appetites, and the portions were large, and the meats and veggies were delicious. They had everything from meatloaf, chicken and ribs to chitterlings.

Google
I ordered 2 meals and requested a side entree and was told that meals are sold as plates only. Although I was willing to pay for my additional entree as I was a new customer and wanted to try a couple of items. The food was not hot and my son’s cornbread was cold and dry like it had been sitting for a long period of time. The best item was the cake slice. Totally disappointed after a 45 minute drive and hearing the rave reviews.

Yelp
This was my first time trying this place. I had heard about it through food bloggers on Instagram but I didn't think I would get the chance to actually try it because I'm in Charlotte. Luckily, I was visiting a friend in a Winston-Salem who recommended we try them out. When we arrived the line was at the door. Although the line was long, it moved pretty quickly. The staff was very helpful and patient with me as I chose my order. Being a country boy, I had to test their chitterlings (chitlins), the mixed greens, and macaroni. Wow is all I can say. Everything was flavored perfectly and downright delicious. I couldn't believe it had taken me so long to try this place out. They've officially been placed on my favorites list. I want to come back here everytime I'm in town lol.

Yelp
Total disappointment!!! Stay away from here. The food looked like it had been out for a very long time! We drove almost 3 hours one way to patronize this place since it is black owned it was nothing like on their website. The food selections were very limited nothing like the beautiful spread on their site. We left without ordering the chitterlings that hubby wanted as they were over 25.00 for a small serving!!! We would never patronize this place again!@

Yelp
Somebody's Grandparents are in that kitchen! I wasn't expecting this food to be that good. When it comes to soul food, we have some of the most basic restaurants in Winston that never hit the spot but this one did it for me. This is actually my second time trying this place and I was impressed. I got a togo order and it was fast and fresh. The employees are friendly and the restaurant is clean. It's nothing fancy which is probably why the food is good. Give it a try for a home cooked meal from someone else's kitchen.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Love this place! I am hooked on the fried pork chop, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy and I can't forget the corn bread. My husband and I love this place. The staff Is ALWAYS nice and welcoming. I have never had any issues here. Food is always fresh and delicious. And the slice of cakes and banana pudding is also fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant. It's always clean!

Yelp
Happy Mother's Day to everyone!! I got here about 11:35 am (they open at 11:30) and the line was packed out the door. This was my first time here and I will be back! The setup of ordering and paying was set up prefectly. The servers were nice and quick with the descriptions and service. Definitely felt like I was at home type of vibe. The fried meat options like pork chops and fish were cook to order! So be prepared to wait for hot n fresh food! The food was excellent and I love the beef ribs. Will be back for some more! So if you're in the area, stop by and try it!!!!

Amber H.

Yelp
It's a good thing I don't know how to make this at home this good because if I did, all I would do is eat & nap. That was so good! I'm so glad I went. I went 35 minutes before closing and they still had everything on the menu! I ordered as if what I wanted was out but to my chagrin, they had the Meatloaf, sweet potatoes and Mac & cheese. It was delicious for me. The meatloaf: Thick w/ tomato sauce. Sauce had a marinara taste but it complimented the meatloaf perfectly. Mac Cheese: Taste of different cheeses not just 1 our velveta, it was good w/ a sprinkle of salt not much flavor added seasoning but it was still so good. When adding seasonings you have to be careful so this was good for me. Sweet potatoes: Sweet.. not in syrup when served, which is great, especially for travel. Again, just right. Inside, there is a long bench to sit on. Food is served on the right w/ plenty seating in the front and back. Staff is welcoming & personable. Will definitely be back. Try for yourself!

Yelp
Visited March 28 during lunch and they were busy! Be patient with them. They are set up like K&W. Fried Fish and Fried Chicken are made to order and the Whitening was fried nicely, with great seasoning and lite breading (which made it GREAT). My dad ordered the meatloaf and said it was very tasty. I had one bite of his meatloaf and it was seasoned well. All the sides were great. Ill be back for sure! Our server was very attentive for our large group. One downside is one of the barstools my cousin sat on kept coming apart. I'd recommend they do a furniture check in. Overall, my fam and I will be back!

Garrison T.

Yelp
Tasty croaker, cabbage, and green beans. Great customer service. Food was cooked to order and came out fast

Marcus W.

Yelp
This was my first experience at this restaurant that I have been hearing about on local Facebook groups. When I first arrived I noticed that there were really beautiful murals on the building, and on the walls inside. They had options for food off of the cafeteria style serving line, or menu items like cheeseburgers. I chose the cafeteria food and got the Fried Chicken with macaroni and cheese and pinto beans and cornbread. Everything was seasoned perfectly and just very well done. I'm not a fan of onions and there were onions in the pinto beans but it didn't take away from how good they were. Everyone was super friendly, and I loved that they were being safe by wearing masks. The sweet tea was some of the best restaurant sweet tea I've ever had. I cannot wait to return here for another meal.

Kenny M.

Yelp
I need them to season the food better than what I received today with my veg plate! I also giving the child portion as well, I mean the owner give me the adult portions.

Zena T.

Yelp
Husband came across this place yesterday on fb and after reading reviews we decided we would make the drive up from Charlotte. Was a line out the door when we pulled up and there is limited parking. I ordered the turkey wing, potato salad, mac & cheese with a corn bread muffin. Husband had the turkey wing, green beans, rice and gravy with a roll. I'm not sure what all the hoopla was about at all. The food was not really hot, I've had better mac and cheese, I did enjoy the potato salad. The turkey was tender fall off the bone but nothing really had any seasoning. My husband really enjoyed his meal. Oh yeah the pound cake was the best. Sides are priced a bit on the high side for the amount served. Husband is feeling this place so I'll be back at least once more to try something else. Turkey would've been better had it been in gravy.

Vicky B.

Yelp
My food was so good. I did not have to season anything. The candied yams were amazing. I traveled 1hr away to try this place. I will be back.

Tony O.

Yelp
The food made me sick. Also for the price per plate was not worth the quality. I had the cube steak, Mac, rice and gravy. Also got a wing lunch special 2 flats and a drum is what I got and cucumbers salad for 10 bucks outrageous and was not good. They got to do better or will not make it much longer. Two thumbs down.

Jamall G.

Yelp
Food's great! Need to DoorDash on Sundays! The pork chops are my favorite !!!!!!! !!!!!

Maya C.

Yelp
2x plates 14.99 each Ribs tasteless Pinto taste like dirty dish soap Grn beans sweet Cornbread dry an gritty Banana pudding awful I will not be back!!!

Claudia B.

Yelp
Taste of the Triad is absolutely delicious!!! We ordered food for my dad's 65th birthday and it was a smashing success!!! Everyone was raving about the food! The ribs fell off the bone, the chicken wings were fried to perfection, the collard cabbage mix was seasoned perfectly, the Mac n cheese was ooey gooey cheesy deliciousness, the sweet potatoes were on point with just the right sugar cinnamon and spice, and the peach cobbler was the perfect ending to an amazing plate of soul food! My dad had never tasted Taste of the Triad and now all he wants is to eat there all the time! My mom hopes they do a thanksgiving dinner cause if y'all do... we'll be buying pans of food!!! If you've never tried Taste of the Triad, get in your car, drive down the street, and get you a plate of soul food made with love!!! Sabrina the owner is fabulous and so wonderful to work with! Thank you Sabrina and your amazing staff for making my dads party a taste they'll never forget!!!

Patsy R.

Yelp
Came to TASTE OF THE TRIAD and the food was delicious. Boss Lady was right!!! The staff was professional. The restaurant was nice & Clean as was their service! I'll be back !!!

Rusty C.

Yelp
Good food, super nice staff! I love the beef ribs on Sundays, plenty of options to choose from.

Terry H.

Yelp
Excellent. Will definitely be back! The food was delicious and the portions were generous!

Kudzai S.

Yelp
I drive 8 hours to Winston Salem a few times a year to visit family. For me, southern food is a delicacy that I rarely experience. I've visited ALL the soul food establishments in Winston Salem and I will unequivocally say Taste of the Triad has the BEST around bar none. They have great service, a clean establishment, a spacious seating, a wide selection of choices, and the BEST food I've had in years.

Rayshel W.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Talk about southern hospitality. The food was delicious. Reasonably priced. Huge portions. I like to EAT and I barely finished my meal in one sitting. The owner is professional and the staff is patient. There are so many food options. Come early because they have a decent amount of customers and the food goes pretty quick. When I first walked into the place, it smelled of the ITIS! For all my Black folks and maybe other races understand this, the itis is when you eat so much food that you are ready to go to sleep. The aroma in the place let me know that I would be K.O. After eating. This place is worth the money! Definitely would try it again when I'm back in North Carolina!

Sunni L.

Yelp
Best soul food in town! I wouldn't advise going close to closing time bc they don't have nowhere NEAR as much to choose from as they do during busy hours.

Corey H.

Yelp
The food was amazing and service was 5 star. I went two times in the same week. Food is well seasoned from the beef ribs to the collard greens and green beans

Cori U.

Yelp
Everyone there is so nice and friendly, the food tasted amazing and delicious. The wait time for my food was 15 minutes but that's because I ordered fried chicken. The whole vibe of the place is calm and original and home-like.

Chelsea C.

Yelp
The food is soooo good here! The service is just as good if not better. I highly recommend it

Saundra G.

Yelp
I ate lunch here today and I have to tell you, the food was delicious! A great value, too. I had the meatloaf, marinated cucumber salad, sweet potatoes and black eyed peas. I thought I was finished, but then I had the banana pudding. Oh my goodness! I loved it. I'll be back, and I highly recommend this restaurant!

Irma R.

Yelp
So we realized they were now offering brunch on weekends, we decided to give them a try. The $4.99 meat and two side with a bread, an excellent value!. We had the salmon croquettes with scrambled eggs and grits and sausage patties with scrambled eggs and grits. We had coffee that was absolutely fantastic for restaurant coffee. The salmon croquettes had a little more filler than I use to make mine ar home but it was still flavorful. It did have a bit if bell pepper included, I've not had any like that before. The grits were nice and creamy and seasoned well. The eggs had been sitting a while but they were still pretty good. I will definitely be coming back for breakfast again and we have been for dinner other times.

Kiki K.

Yelp
The inconsistency of quality is this place and other soul food restaurants in Winston Salem is where these places fall short. So unfortunate because this really is the type of food that most prefer relating to a home cooked meal.

Neil R.

Yelp
Sometimes I forget this place is there since the "CVdemic" I've eaten here 3 times & have had 3 good meals every time. I'm a straight shooter so I'm full disclosure. The fish excellent! Sides I've eaten excellent! That cornbread ouuuuu lawd it needs work. Looks the part but it is terrible! Honestly I wouldn't serve it if I couldn't fix it. Cornbread is relatively easy to make. Nevertheless when I'm around there they can get some of my money!

Brittany F.

Yelp
First trying this Restaurant (Me and my brother) and we're glad to say it was really good! The food was tasteful, the service was very nice, good pay for good food. All in all if you want a good home meal this is one of the places to go!

Steven M.

Yelp
This is a quaint little soul food place that really knows how to serve good food. Granted it's not sparkly and shiny and new, but the people there know what they're doing. Good old southern food and comfort food done right.

Lakesha B.

Yelp
The place looks very old and run down and the food was even worse. Some of it was over-seasoned and too salty to even eat and other items were bland and had no flavor at all. Also the macaroni and cheese was cold. I would not recommend this place at all. It is not the taste of the Triad, it is the waste of the triad

Chenelle T.

Yelp
The customer service here is awesome! The pork chops, fish and fried chicken is cooked to order and the YAMS!!! Will be back to this restaurant every time I'm in Winston Salem. The ONLY! reason I gave 4stars instead of 5 stars is because I do have a favorite soul food restaurant back home in Maryland and I felt like I was cheating lol! #TheFoodIsReallyGood

Asia F.

Yelp
All of the food on the line had been sitting there for atleast an hour or more. They didn't even stir it up when we walked in to make it look as if it hadn't been. We ordered fried chicken, which is made to order and asked for fresh Mac and cheese and greens. They did not have any fresh greens so our second side had to come from the line (the food that had been sitting there). We paid for our food and found a table to sit at. The restaurant was clean and quite. Our drinks seemed flat but it wasn't the worse thing ever. It took our food about 25 mins to come out. Our fried chicken was cooked in old grease and didn't taste seasoned. The rolls we ordered were both hard. The cornbread was cold. The employees however were very polite and attentive. I would not eat here again. Definitely not worth my $22.

Karen B.

Yelp
My family was at a birthday luncheon, August 18th and from the beginning we were treated like family. Sabrina is a true gem and her customer service was superb. The fun that we had was absolute delicious and my family thoroughly enjoyed it. We will definitely be back for the hospitality and food.

K S.

Yelp
Not the taste of the Triad that I was hoping for when I visited this restaurant. I had fish which was over salted yet still had no real flavor. The made to order okra was over breaded and under cooked (it was still soggy). The cabbage was okay but not great. The portion sizes are small for an $11 meal. Furthermore , the head chef seemed to have a superiority complex. I won't be returning due to the great disappointment that I experienced.

Rebecca E.

Yelp
On a good note the restaurant was clean and staff was nice. The food however was not impressive I am sorry to say. I had meatloaf that was basic baked hamburger with some thick, gooey topping that tasted just like a bottled sweet barbecue sauce. The meatloaf was not seasoned with onions, green pepper, bread crumbs or anything. Just baked hamburger with a sweet gooey sauce. The mac and cheese was pretty good, nothing to die for with no baked cheese on top and the pinto beans were flavorless except for having a strong smokey taste to them (maybe liquid smoke) no ham added to them either. It definitely was not the good ole' southern cooking kind of food. I could really teach them how to make some killer southern food in their restaurant! For over 11.00 I got a meat, the 2 veggies and a very, very small roll. The portion sizes were very small! Sorry to compare the restaurant to the former Bell Brothers that used to be there because there is absolutely no comparison. They knew how to cook some excellent southern food and gave you very generous portions for a reasonable price. I might mention that TOT cooks fried food to order so you have to wait on it. I thought all food was cafeteria style but it is not. I can say I tried Taste of the Triad but that was it, sorry I was not a fan at all and will not give it another try.

Donna M.

Yelp
This quaint place is absolutely worth hunting down. Sabrina is a doll and makes you feel right at home. She really knows her Southern cooking. I will definitely return. Just make sure you are hungry when you visit this gem of a restaurant.

Frank B.

Yelp
First time eating here. Had the fried catfish, greens, pintos and corn bread. The fish was excellent, lightly battered and seasoned with salt and pepper. The greens, pintos, and corn bread were all good. The staff was friendly and helpful. If you like simple food that is well prepared, you should try this restaurant.

Meekmilli D.

Yelp
I recently dined in at this establishment with my mom. Upon entering we were not able to order due to the manger rushing the employees around to serve a table in the back. Once we ordered and walked into the dining area I was amazed at all the beautiful portraits painted on the walls of powerful black influentials. I noticed there was a Caucasian family also dining in. As my mom and I sat down we made the second occupied table in the establishment. We began eating and I watched three employees and the manager go to the Caucasian family's table to see if they were enjoying their meal, refill drinks etc. I had to call our waitress so my mom could inquire about hot sauce other than Texas Pete and she was simply told no. Across the room we heard the Caucasian male ask for another hot sauce option as well and the waitress then asked the manager has she ever heard of crystal lake hot sauce. No one spoke to us. Our waitress even began cleaning a table behind us without saying a word to us. I had enough and called her to our table and told her about my experience. I was taken back when she informed me she was trained to cater to Caucasian customers because they leave reviews. She apologized and thanked me for bringing it to her attention as if she didn't know and said she would tell the manager. The manager then asked us in passing how the food was. I have never been so insulted in a black owned establishment!!! The manager never came to our table to address anything! I would like them to know that black people leave reviews as well and the service was embarrassing to say the least.

Michael C.

Yelp
Wow. This place is tucked into a little plaza, not easy to find, but wow. I had the meatloaf, and it was a huge hunk, much more than I expected on the plate...spectacular tomato based thick sauce on it, with peppers baked in...GLORIOUS, and the sides were amazing as well - sometimes places have mac-n-cheese that is factory produced, but here it is thick and creamy and terrific! The seasoned green beans were very savory. The prices are maybe two dollars higher than a lot of lunch places, but it was WELL worth the price. The only negative is that the signage is small so you have to find it carefully. I LOVE this meatloaf. Shaniqua was super-friendly and the chef came out to say hello as well. Love it.

Annette C.

Yelp
Home cooking with better service! Thrilled to be one of the first to welcome and enjoy Taste of the Triad. Hats off to the incredible team that made it all possible.

Erin H.

Yelp
If you're looking for outstanding Southern comfort food, you need to visit Taste of the Triad in Winston-Salem. Fried chicken, baked chicken, meatloaf, smothered pork chops, macaroni & cheese, pinto beans, green beans, corn, peach cobbler, ribs, collards and so much more will be on the menu, too. The service was top-notch, and the macaroni & cheese was the best I've ever had. Seriously...the best macaroni & cheese EVER!

Toni M.

Yelp
I visited for dinner on a recent trip from Texas. It was a wonderful taste of home! The food was delicious. Everything was fresh and hot. We had to wait a while but it was well worth the wait!

John J.

Yelp
So happy to see this place open again. Not to be confused with BB. Best food in the triad bar none. Best fried chicken I've had in years. Vegetables the way my grandmother used to make. Mac and cheese to die for. We will be eating here for a long time to come. Sabrina is a sweetheart and will make you feel right at home.

Suzanne R.

Yelp
Just traveling through on business and looking for a some good local comfort food. This was the place! Nice and clean atmosphere and great service. I'll be back!
