The West End’s Best Meals Under $20

"Massive coolers filled with Joya sodas stand on both sides of the small restaurant. Nary a seat in sight. Okay, we get the hint—Taste of Tropical isn’t the place you come for a sit-down meal. Regulars know that, if they want to enjoy the generous order of jerk chicken over rice and peas ($15.95) or the brown stewed snapper with cabbage ($13.95), they’re going to have to do it from the Ikea table in their own place." - demarco williams, nina reeder, jacinta howard

This food is terrible! Definitely not real Jamaican food. I should have gone with my first mind to not eat there. The young lady at the front was on her phone the entire time. When I asked questions regarding the menu, either she didn't know or she was irritated because I asked questions. The fish wasn't seasoned. Box Mac and cheese. It looks like it was warm I the microwave with cheap cheese. Rice and peas were old and hard. Jerk sauce on the rice, and peas tasted burnt. The only thing tasty was the plantains. It's terrible all the way around. The young lady needs to get her appearance together as well. Not professional looking nor clean. I will not return here. Complete waste of my money and I'm still hungry.

The food was TERRIBLE!!!! It tastes like it’s processed not authentic at all it smelled and taste sour the Irish moss is no blended well it’s separated in the bottle and the prices are outrageous…. Don’t waist your time or money I throw the whole thing away right in the parking lot

First time eating here. Had the small Pepper Steak entree over rice and peas w/ cabbage & Mac and cheese. EVERYTHING taste good, the pepper steak was a little too greasy that I’d like it to be. Next time I come I’ll try other things on the menu. This meal cost somewhere between $15-$16

$18 plate - The Jerk chicken needs some work, or less work 🥲. The mac and cheese is not it, the white rice is less than not it, and the black beans ah gwaan wid a likkle vibe. I tried the chicken & fish patties and would not recommend them. Also, I ordered curry chicken but the man was alone and forgot my order.

Try this place once it'll become your favorite Caribbean Food Place in the Westend Area. R.I.H Mr Jocelyn. A great and wonderful man who always would greet you with a warm and inviting smile.

Definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The food was good but the parking lot is small and really hood. Probably won't eat here again unless someone picks it up for me.

Yelp
I finally found a place with good, inexpensive fried whole snapper. It's close enough to me that I'll probably eat it every month. Good macaroni and cheese too. The restaurant is hot af, no sitting room but the aunties are still there pumping out quality plates. Shout out to them. My snapper was fried perfectly.

Yelp
I was looking for some good tasting authentic Jamaican food. I found it here. This is my second time here. It's a small one table restaurant. The customer service was good. The owner,he's a nice older gentleman. I had the stew chicken with rice and peas, cabbage and Lima beans. The whole meal was good. The food was seasoned to perfection. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
Ordered veggie plate and brown stew shrimp. The veggie plate is frozen bag food and the shrimp tasted like it was Chinese food! I'm Jamaican and this is not real Jamaican food !!! Called to complain and the man was no help. Didn't care and said that's how it's made, bye and hung up. The sauce wasn't even dark brown it looks and taste like sweet and sour Chinese shrimp. Never coming here again.

Yelp
All I gotta say is, "YES SIIIIIR!" Lol. Super good though. Massive portions made with love.

Yelp
On a Wednesday afternoon, I call at 7:31pm to place an order for pick up. The guy answered and said that they're closed. After asking "don't you close at 8?" he said "no 7:30". Rode by to verify the hours (since I was on the way). Not only were they still open, they close at 8pm! If you weren't taking call in orders just say so. Won't bother here again.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
I've been dozens of times and don't have a single complaint. The staff is extremely nice and the food is fantastic. I get the large ox tail with cabbage & Mac and cheese. Sometimes I'll get a beef patty but either way the food is consistently hot & delicious.
google avatar

Trey D.

Yelp
I ordered 3 plates and I added plantains with an additional charge, but was charged for extra plantains. I was double charged for something I only ordered once. The restaurant added and charged me for extra plantains.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, though the environment is fairly shady. The restaurant is take-out only, and you're likely to get barked at by the cashier (soup nazi style) for not understanding the incredibly hard to read menu. The restaurant is also effectively cash only. They do have a service that's similar to an ATM, but they charge $1.60 to use it and then your bank charges you their usury fees on top of that. You can end up paying $3.50 for a $8 jerk chicken! In spite of all that, their food hits the spot. The jerk chicken (and their meat pies) have some kick to them, their sides are well done, and their portions are big enough to last for 3 meals.

Yelp
Hadn't had Conch in a long time. It was as good as i remember. Could have been a little more tender but good nonetheless.

Yelp
Went into this establishment hoping to be treated like an actual paying customer, but unfortunately the older man working the cash register (about 5'10", bald with salt and pepper colored hair, maybe 55-60) decided to be very aggressive and rude pertaining to my order. My VEGETABLE dish - coming to $17 ORIGINALLY - took 30+ minutes to be filled, as others who ordered oxtails, entrees, etc got their food. In this time, I realize I was overcharged due to more than what I asked for being itemized on the receipt, but decided it was no big deal - I would eat the extra food. I had to return to the counter and request my food - again, 30+ mins for some curried veggies. Immediately it was brought out, MINUS the extras I paid for. I get the attention of Mr RUDE CASHIER, and he tried to PUBLICLY ANNOUNCE that I OWED HIM money! Like EXTRA loud, EXTRA rude, cutting me off, not looking at my receipt - just all around acting a FOOL! Only to realize that HE DID OVERCHARGE ME. He didn't apologize. He got quiet, gave me my money back (minus a dime) and I walked my self out of there. I am NOT a rude person, and this guy obviously had a personal problem from the getgo. I am a foodie, and will excuse an establishment for an innocent mix up, but THIS was THE WORST experience I have had in Atlanta this far. Carribean food is my favorite - I have samples several restaurants around town. This place is NOT it. The food was oily, the curry was no, it was overall mediocre and I will NEVER return. The guy's attitude just made it all even MORE inexcusable. I should have just gotten a refund.

Yelp
I've been craving good authentic Jamaican food for a while . I'm originally from Atlanta ga born and raised . I'm from the west side . I can't believe it took me 28 yrs to try this place . When you enter it's a mom and pop look. You place your order . Wait for your food . They call you up and you pay for your food . It took me about 10-15 mins for my food. My food was piping hot . When i got home it was still steaming . Everything was delicious . I'm so amazed. Besides Mangoes this is my new favorite Jamaican restaurant!

Yelp
Very nice service. Food was great and they give you a lot for your money. It didn't take long to get the food and while shortly waiting it was getting busy even on a Tuesday. It's a must try. Will be going back!!

Yelp
There is NO way possible this has even a 2 star. First the Pros : convenient area, okay customer service, ummm I don't know okay Cons: when you walk in the freaking smell is awful sheesh I don't even know what it is. 2. I originally went for a beef patty omg if you would have seen the display they were placed in. They were all pulled inside no real order for the flavor i don't know how they could know the difference. It looked played over and as if they been sitting all day. I literally had to play it like they didn't have what I wanted so I wouldn't be mean. I had so many expectations for this place but I was very displeased!
google avatar

Karr W.

Yelp
Let me start by saying they are just plain RUDE. The older man has been rude for a while. I visited in the past and he didnt greet me or anyone else. Just looks at you until you tell him what you want. Never thank you for your business either. I once tried the bbq shrimp which was decent but the plaintains were not sweet. Tonight i tried the curry shrimp. No flavor at all. Taste plain and I asked him to cook them soft and they were overcooked. When he called the order back he didn't say anything about cooking them soft which I mentioned again but clearly he didn't care. It's too many better Jamaican spots in the area that actually value your business. I will never support them again. Waste of time and money. And quite frankly the absorption of that rude and negative wnegetu isn't worth it either.
google avatar

Varonika R.

Yelp
This place was soo nasty. I ordered the curry chicken, with cabbage and Mac and cheese and it was the worst thing i have ever tasted. The cabbage had no flavor and was full of grease. The whole plate was full of grease. The curry had a taste like it has been sitting there for days.. i actually threw this up right after. Save your money and don't eat here.
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
I'll fight anyone who doesn't like this place. Their jerk chicken, brown chicken stew, and oxtails are the best around. Spicy and flavorful. They also have really good sides like cabbage, sweet carrots, collards, mac-n-cheese, and more. Don't overlook this spot because of the outside appearance! You won't regret going in and your tastebuds will thank you.
google avatar

Haron K.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying, as a Vegetarian, I can't speak AT ALL on the meat options, HOW-EVER...The varieties of Tofu and the vegetable sides are sublime and if the meat options are any comparable indication, then WOW!!! Indeed, indeed, it's a non-descript, hole in wall, but I don't go to restaurants to eat tables, store fronts or décor. (The Health and Safety Score should ease any concerns there) I myself am cool with the Owner, but you also don't come here for the customer service. It leaves a bit to be desired, but also, has absolutely NO bearing on the quality or the taste of the food. In summation - The portions are ample, the prices are good for the portion size and the food is AWESOME...All that other stuff is easily dismissed.
google avatar

Yinka T.

Yelp
This spot provides what you need to satisfy the Jamaican food craving. I visited this hole-in-the-wall, well strip mall, a few weeks ago for the first time. Food: 4.5 Location: 3 Service: 4 The food was excellent. I got the oxtail, salad and rice n peas. Oxtail fell off the bones like no man's business. The location was quite convenient with ample parking. Don't let the exterior fool you. The interior is small and stacked with lots of crates e.t.c There was a man hawking knock-off glasses in there and that was a hilarious exchange turning his offer down. The service was satisfactory and the man behind the counter was very patient with me as I asked multiple questions, as a first-time customer. I will return, if I am in the area!

Yelp
Was overcharged and the portions were small ate food and was hungry a few hours later. I am only 140 so i fill up pretty easily.
google avatar

Yelp
Great great great. Come here. The food tastes homemade and very authentic. The wings are PERFECTLY cooked. The owner is the truth and obviously knows what he's doing and has been doing it for a long time! The jerk sauce is addicting & the mac and cheese is superb. A lot sells out throughout the day because this is a local treasure. Large sizes easily fill two adults. This is booty food lol, worth every calorie tho!

Yelp
Here's an address for you 530 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. Atlanta, Georgia. I truly appreciate a small whole in the wall business maybe more than most as a police officer. I believe that Chef could make cardboard taste like a delicious morsel. Veggies are always great as well. Jamaican is more than Jerk. Ackee and Salt fish check, Callaloo check, Brown stew (chicken, fish, tofu) check, Conch salad check, Rice and peas check. I would like to give Taste of Tropical five ***** but only due to the limited space does this place lose a star for kitschiness. My wife raves about Chef Josilyn cooking.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and amazing! Customer service is always A-1, this is my favorite Jamaican spot.

Yelp
Sooooooooo... I'm from South East Georgia. A Coastal Boy. I love my seafood!!! I found this place about 10 years ago. It's in the Historic West End!!! If you are looking for good Island food then this is the spot. I see the same 3 people there for the last decade, so consistency is definitely there. They are open Mon-Sat. Now, I haven't had anything but one thing on their menu and that tisnthe Fried Conch lol. Yep, in 10 years only thing to ever order is that!! It's Soooooo DAMN GOOD!!! Fried Conch, Peas n Rice and then I mix up the veggies... Plantians, cabbage, carrots, greens, Mac n cheese... They have a large variety of sides you can choose from. I am sure their Veggie plate is awesome because their sides are all great. (I'm a pescatarian so I've never had their more popular things like curry chicken and curry goat etc.). Now I have also had their crab patties and veggie patties which are both good. You can also get an assortment of Island drinks there in the coolers. Service is always the same... Not bountiful and joyful but always pleasant... Kinds like most Jamaican restaurant owners lol. If you want a taste of the islands... Hop on over and give it a try!!!
google avatar

Kat S.

Yelp
Whenever I'm working in Atlanta, I make a special trip here. Best greens and plantains I've ever had! Vegan options, friendly staff, and great prices!
google avatar

Kwayne B.

Yelp
I love this place! I like the brown stewed chicken with cabbage and rice and peas. For the price, you will have to be completely hungry (or fat) to eat it in one setting. I am usually hungry and fat, so I barely have any chicken left. Their meat pies are legit; they're not badly priced ($2 range). The owners are from Jamaica, so you will be sure to get rich flavor in the West End!
google avatar

Kirsten S.

Yelp
Took forever, customer service was sub par. Asked for plantains and they lied and stated they added the order then the lady who took my order got off of work and then the older gentleman tells me there are no plantains. I ended up waiting 20 minutes after being told oxtails would be 10 minutes but curry goat was ready. Will update review if I go a second time. However I can tell they wouldnt try to rectify the issue regardless. Perhaps a call to the health department is necessary
google avatar

Christina D.

Yelp
If I have a craving for authentic Jamacian, this is my go to! The best and most authentic patties..from crab and saltfish to spinach and of course, beef! I love their patties! Love the oxtail and curry and the goat - everything here is just delicious. Although, I haven't tried their desserts. The service here is always cordial, cool and pleasant. I've been here several times and it's always a good experience. Great, chill lil Jamacian spot!

Yelp
Damn, damn, damn (say it like Florida Evans) or mmmm, mmmm, mmm (like the beginning of that Big Daddy Kane Song) or better yet food so good you eat it on the way home risking life and limb. Taste of the Tropical is all that! It has been a minute since I have been there and now that I've gone back, I'm wondering why I stopped going. By far they have the best jerk I have ever tasted, they offer tofu options, and all the veges are meat free........damn damn damn! If you go, you will find the owner sitting up front gettin' his day time TV swerve on (and watchin' his money). Only down side is that it is take out only, but from the looks of the spot you wouldn't want to eat there anyhow. Ya' know, it's one of those places where you wouldn't want to see the kitchen.....ignorance is bliss. But from the brown stew to the homemade ginger brew, this is "down home" Jamaican. Go here.....
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Really enjoyed Brown Chicken Stew with greens and mixed veggies. Co-worker had Curry Chicken with broccoli and redbeans. Very good, a little spicy, broccolli was really good. Small place, take out only. Super busy at lunch. Check it out.
google avatar

Deandre L.

Yelp
3 words... the real deal. Aside from the chicken i get outside of the club on memorial drive) this is the most authentic Caribbean food in GEORGIA. Being from Boston Caribbean food was a large part of my diet. Until I food this place i was forced to go out and party every weekend just for get a piece of chicken. I feel liberated. The food is great but what makes this place so awesome is the people. They dont smile the whole time and they dont try to hold fake convo. Their real people that make real real real good food. I love the jerk chicken, of course, but I also really enjoy the curry chicken or goat and the ox tails. The drink selection is my favorite because they serve real cola which is the only thing to drink when your eating a heaping plate of rice and red beans and cabbage or whatever you like and the meat of your choice. This is a must go!!! Enjoy and Indulge

Yelp
I was looking for a new spot to add to my dinner collection so I decided to finally trry Taste of Tropical. To be honest i've lived in the area for 5 years and never went just because it looked "Scary", but this time I ventured in. I assumed the food would be similar to The Island on Memorial drive so I went with the stew chicken with steamed broccoli and cabbage. Bad idea because that stew chicken was not what I was use to. It was orange and had a wierd nasty kind of taste. However the cabbage and steamed broccoli was oh so good. Next time i'll just stick with what I know and order the jerk chicken. THe stew chicken is pictured so take a look! The price is just right about 6.45 for the small which includes the two sides and meat.
google avatar

Kelli K.

Yelp
I've been frequenting this restaurant for years every time I come I'm greeted w/ a nice friendly welcome. The food is always fresh and hot the taste is very authentic when you taste this food you know that your eating the real thing!! I chatted with the chef for a minute while waiting for my order he shared w/ me that he was taught to cook as a very young child by his grandparents the art of cooking was instilled in him as a youth. Every dish display a unique flavor allowing the chef to celebrate his culture and his roots one plate at a time !!!
google avatar

Cole J.

Yelp
Quality food, great service. They know how to take care of their customers! Will be coming back indefinitely!

Yelp
I have been trying to find a good Caribbean restaurant and after reading Yelp's reviews I tried this one. I wish there was a minus 1 star, I gotta keep looking!. Only the patties are being rated, I did not try anything else and I never will, ever. The food appears to be unhealthy. Patties were stale, VERY stale. I tried the spinach, callaloo, crab meat and chicken patties and all were nasty-tasting. I could barely distinguish the difference in each because the bread part carried a strange odor and was extremely crusty to the point of hardness. The filling spilled out of them in a black dried up goo and each patty was cracked and opened at the top. The awful aroma clung to my cheek, breath and mouth no matter how much I washed, brushed and gargled which is a sure sign of food that has been around too long and should have been thrown out. I could not finish any of those patties for fear of food poisoning. Another sign of suspicious ''freshness'': Sticky and greasy floors. Dirty and grimy display cases means they have not been cleaned for a while. Anyone who cares about their health or is familiar with good Caribbean cooking will NEVER be a customer at this place.

Yelp
DELICIOUS AUTHENTIC ISLAND EATS I am a monthly regular and it never ceases to amaze me! I take anybody who hasn't had real curry or jerk dishes here for their first exp
google avatar

Yelp
Don't let the looks and location of this restaurant fool you. The food here is top notch and you get enough for 2 servings. The prices are very reasonable. I usually order a veggie plate which weighs about 3 pounds for $8.00 and change. Great food, great prices.

Yelp
Out of all the Jamaican spots I have been to in Atlanta, this one is the BEST! This place is right up the street from the Atlanta University Center, so a friend/classmate decided to treat me here for a quick lunch in-between classes. She bragged about how good their Jamaican food is and I was a little skeptical because I never heard of them and there wasn't too many reviews here on Yelp. We ordered their Jamaican patties, they have a wide variety of flavors, including: chicken, beef, spinach and cheese, crab, etc. We sat and ate our delicious patties at the one small table there is in the establishment. This place is really suppose to be a takeout spot, but we didn't want to eat in the car or in our next class. I will definitely be back here to try more food off of their menu, namely the oxtails! They should also extend their business hours. 7pm close time is way too early in Atlanta.
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
My first authentic Caribbean meal in Atlanta was at Taste Of Tropical. They have curry chicken, stew chicken, beef patties, chicken patties, plantain, Jamaican soda, cakes and so much more. Just recently I treated myself to lunch and had a beef patty with cocoa bread and it was decent. At Taste Of Tropical dinners are available in small, medium and large portions for less than ten dollars. Dinners come with rice and peas, vegetables and plantain. Typically I get the medium sized dinner because it is just enough. The large dinner is only necessary if you want leftovers. Taste Of Tropical is kind of a dump but the food is good. It's a to go establishment and generally the wait is about ten minutes for orders. Unfortunately they don't accept debit or credit. While this cash only operation has an ATM set up, the surcharge is $1.30. Basically it is best to use cash. Taste Of Tropical is across the street from the West End Mall on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard. It is right off the I-20 Joseph E. Lowery exit and just a block away from Lee Street.

Yelp
I tried Taste of Tropical last weekend and it was delicious. I'm very wary of Carib food because if not cooked correctly, could be a mouthful of disaster However, I had the jerk shrimp and cabbage and their were no major complaints. I can agree with the jerk having more of a BBQ sauce taste to it but otherwise, it was still good. It's not a spot to really hang out as there isn't much room for sitting and eating but the food is fresh and delish. I'll be going back, Actually... I wish they were open on Sunday as Im in the mood for a ginger beer. :-)

Ameena M.

Yelp
Worst experience EVER went inside the store at 11:30 to place a order was told the Mac and cheese wasn't ready so I said okay I'll come back the lady told me give the cool a hour ordered on the phone a hour and 10 mins later was told to come pick up in 15 mins get there a half hour later and was told the Mac and cheese still not ready so I left then ordered on grub hub knowing it would take some time for me to get the order giving them time to cook. They accept my order I get it over a hour late and still no mac and cheese in my platter. At the point I called the store back and was told mac and cheese is sold out it will take a hour to make more At that point I was pissed !!! Not from the city so wanted to try something close by it let's just say it went very bad !! Wish I could give them no stars !!!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite Jamaican spot! I had my first Jamaican plate from here! It's amazing! The owner is awesome and always so nice. I always get the jerk chicken white meat & all beans and rice. I always have to get some coco bread! Sometimes it's best to call ahead because it can get busy on some days.
google avatar

Tia A.

Yelp
The rice & beans and Macaroni &cheese was nasty. I had way better island food then this crap I ate!!
google avatar

Ziggy C.

Yelp
Really good Authentic Jamaican flavors. i order the patties (make sure tell him don't heat them up to long.) Also i have had the jerk chicken(Bomb) Rice and Peas(Dry but ok) Jerk Wings(they ok) had better. but overall good spot!

Bernard H.

Yelp
This is the best Jamaican restaurant that I have eaten in quite a while. They serve very generous portions and the food is delicious. The oxtails are well seasoned and the curry chicken was also good. The jerk chicken patty is very spicy which is how I like it. The beef patties are real beefy unlike other Caribbean restaurants. If u are ever in the Atlanta area and want to try some Caribbean food, please stop by.
google avatar

Tanna A.

Yelp
The food was alright. I had chicken curry, cabbage and mac and cheese.. but they do give you a lot for what you pay for.. location is in the hood. So be prepared. But otherwise I would go back. I like how they give you 2 sides with your entree.
