The Best King Cakes in New Orleans for Mardi Gras | Eater New Orleans

"A New Orleans childhood favorite from back in the day, Tastee has four greater New Orleans area locations and is well known for buttermilk drops, doughnuts, apple fritters, and maybe most of all, the old-school, McKenzie’s recipe king cakes in season." - Beth D’Addono

The Most Incredible King Cake-Inspired Dishes To Try Right Now | Eater New Orleans

"On any given day, the crown jewels of Tastee donuts are the buttermilk drops. Not gonna lie — lots of justly people go here to relive McKenzie’s (RIP) king cake, but the buttermilk drop version is also super-addictive (and also a McKenzie’s recipe). It’s basically a ring of those little dreams topped with icing and Mardi Gras colored sugar. What could possibly go wrong with that?" - Stephanie Carter

We went here yesterday (Tue) after a storm had rolled through at 5:30p as my son's birthday dinner choice because he loves the castle burgers. However, when we arrived, it was literally the lights were on and nobody was home. It looked like they were open, but it was locked up, and no employees were there. I took a pic of their hours on the door just to be sure I wasn't crazy. For a place that doesn't seem to have a lot of business, this is a great way to lose more.

Google
Those delicious little square burgers 🍔 are great! Now you can also get apple fritter and as many donuts 🍩 as you can Carry! The best part is the friendly service!

Google
The staff was so welcoming & friendly. The McKenzie king cake could have been better. I must say that didn't matter, because the awesome customer service made up for it. The prices have been going higher & higher every year, but I get it:) Prefer this location to the Clearview location, those ladies were so horrible to me that I actually spoke with the owner. Unbelievable!

Google
Super Tastee Apple fritters and lemon drops ever! As Locals we don’t eat A lot of beignets or Dunkin or Krispy Kreme… Tastee is the original and our go to every weekend. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. They are happy to help grab the donut at the very end of the case if that’s the one you want. The apple fritters are our favorite of all the donuts offered. The fritters are always crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. They have apples sprinkled in too with lots of cinnamon… Delicious! If you are an apple fritter fan make sure you get there before noon as sometimes they sell out and don’t make anymore. Second favorite is the buttermilk drops. See photos. They have a cake texture - taste is vanilla with sweet cream. Crunchy and a little sugary on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside.

Haven't been home in a while taste still the best Love the donuts

Google
Good donuts, but the slowest service on Earth. Not really worth the wait. I hope they get better and faster workers.

Google
I went to the drive thru and after the staff walked to the window he just looked at me without saying anything. Even after I told him my order he shook his head yes and walked off to fill it. I thought "maybe he can't talk" but was proven incorrect when he came back to the window and said "we don't have those". Unprofessional and uninviting.

Google
I've been going here since i was little and the only real problem I've come across is whenever you're in the drive through they never get all your food, went recently and they forgot more than half of my things, but this place means a lot to me and I will still love it...but get better service🙏

Yelp
The Saturday morning drive-thru line is long! Long line inside, too. The 2-3 people working were making it as quick as possible, though. Great donuts! Some of the old McKenzie's Bakery recipes, New Orleans classics. I didn't try the buttermilk drops, but they looked fabulous. I had the bavarian cream filled chocolate donut. I asked the woman if it was custard filled, and she said it's ~bavarian cream.~ Excusez-moi. Great spot to pick up some pastries for church, the family, anywhere. They were cranking out the coffee, too. Nothing super fancy here. They have some savory items on their menu that I didn't see anybody order. I believe most of the business here is donuts. Nice tables inside, but most people did take-out. The fruit stuffed turnovers are my Uncle's favorite.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by the drive-through to get some doughnuts on our way to get ready for our friend's wedding. The drive-through option was super convenient, service was quick and the doughnuts were delicious. It was the perfect snack to have around all day for the bridal party to snack on while getting ready for our friend's big day!

Yelp
Phenomenal and tasty food, both savory and sweet options. I had my first Bearclaw donut here and I've been coming back ever since. Old style 90s service with low wait times and smiles on their faces. This has been my go to for morning donuts and coffee for over 20 years and I cannot recommend them enough.

Yelp
Tastte donuts has been my go to donut shop my whole life. Hands-down, my favorite donuts in the New Orleans Metro area.

Kacey S.

Yelp
I go every year to the west esplanade tastee donuts to purchase 4-5 king cakes at a time for multiple family members and I. I usually make at least 3-4 trips from Folsom, Louisiana which takes me about an hour and a half. We grew up on these king cakes so we look forward to this time of year. Unfortunately I will have to find a different location because every visit this year this location has sold me Kingcake's that went stale after 1 day. I thought the first visit was just a fluke and hoping that the next visit would go better. Well, this last visit after waiting 45 min in line to purchase non fresh king cakes will definitely be my last visit. I'm very disappointed. These Kingcake's also went up in price so paying $100-125 dollars for non fresh Kingcakes is non acceptable.

Yelp
I have always loved Kastle Burgers, but everything they make is excellent. They also bought McKenzie's recipes. Every time I visit family, I go there four or five times. It is one of the best restaurants in the New Orleans area!!

Yelp
You have not had a real donut until you get a hold of a 3 am donut fresh out the fryer. Let the church say amen!

Yelp
Such a delight to come to this location for my Tastee fix. I love the fact that out of all the Tastee locations, this 1 is fully serviced where everyone is ready & willing to serve with such a quick and upbeat personality. The aroma that hits you in the face as soon as you enter is beyond memorizing so much it makes you want to taste every single thing that has been baked. I highly suggest the buttermilk drops

Kevin O.

Yelp
They make the best cream puffs and apple fritters. In general all their bakery items are great.

Yelp
Tastee has been in my life for decades! I don't remember a time before chocolate sprinkle donuts and I distinctly remember my first Kastleburger with cheese! It was a rush of addictive wonderfulness that I have revisited, with fervor, time and time again! This location takes me waaaayyyy back with the sugar dressed donuts of my dreams, McKenzie's favorites, and the staple slider Kastleburger. Good coffee, tasty tasty treats and sweet smiling staff make this my favorite Tastee of all time!

Yelp
Since quarantine began, the drive through is still open, but my husband and I have been coming here a couple times a year for almost seven years. Though the restaurant area is dated, it has always been clean, and the donuts are always, well, tasty. And very fresh. The service is friendly and patient too. Lots of people usually go in with their kids, and the baristas seem used to the usual picky routine that kids do. It's also really spacious, so you really can bring your whole family and enjoy a donut and some breakfast. For now, I'm thankful that they are maintaining standards of cleanliness and offering castleburgers and donuts for those of us who still need our weekend fix. Seriously, thank you, Tastee Donuts!
google avatar

Yelp
This Tastee doesn't have the huge selection like the one on Loyola Dr in Kenner but they are, nonetheless, fresh and tasty. They have an assortment of donuts from glazed to cake donuts. Then there are numerous varieties of each one from a regular glazed to a chocolate ice glazed with sprinkles or a regular cake donut to glazed chocolate cake donuts. I usually get a small 1/2 dozen box for $4.99. Kastleburgers and a few other items are also available here (chicken and fish baskets). You can't go wrong with a few Kastleburgers late at night when on an empty stomach.

Yelp
I was once told my an employee of TD to NEVER eat here. With that being said, I can disclose that I wish I could eat the mini hamburgers here everyday. For many unnamed reasons, I'm sure I should not - but they're just that good. Not to mention, they are the closest thing you will get to a Krystal burger unless you want to go to Bourbon Street and spend an obscene amount of money on a tiny burger that shouldn't be priced at more than 50 cents. (I'm not driving to Lafayette for Krystal burger, would you?) Their desserts, while still good, have gone downhill over the years. You can purchase better desserts at Robert's, SAMs, Costco, or one of our amazing local bakeries if you feel like spending a little dough (pun-intended). I used to love their doughnuts, and I haven't found any other doughnuts quite like theirs. You should know that they're the thick kind, though. There's nothing wrong with that; people just seem to prefer the right off the conveyer belt, lighter-tasting doughnuts these days. The employees aren't the friendliest in town, but it's clear they don't have to be. This tastee has existed on this corner for as long as I can remember. My neighbors - past and present - have kept this place a staple in their lives. If you're around and need a quick, well-priced breakfast (not just donuts and pastries), give it a shot. You may just love their stuff.

Yelp
My husband and I went here today to get some donuts. We stood there and there were 3 employees there. None of them even looked at us let alone wait on us. How terrible!!! What kind of people do you hire????

Yelp
You guys the staff is so rude, they give out stale donuts. I purchase 6 buttermilk drops on May 4,2020. I always ask are hot donuts available. The guy said I have hot glaze just came out. I told him give me 2 glaze 4 buttermilk drops. I'm sitting in the car 5mins eating my kinda warm glaze donut; not hot but kinda warm. My familymember is eating the buttermilk drop hard as a brick dried out in the middle. I brought the buttermilk drop back inside tells the clerk just to give me the glaze because these buttermilk drop are stale. This guy gives me a whole attitude/fussing stating he can't resell those donuts. I told him whyyy would u want to resell stale donuts if I'm telling u they are stale.. This dude tells me I tried to tell u they were stale. I told him if you don't use keys words like they are not fresh/they are stale how would a customer know. Then, the cashier wants to act like he doing me a favor I'm going to change them this time. Y'all if these donuts are not fresh out the grease stay away from this place. These donuts are not worth your money or headache.. Then look at the donuts they give me;I don't know if that is chocolate or burn donuts.. This is the worst part the guy goes in the back to exchange the donuts the guy is cursing, fussing loud in the back about this situation.... This was horrible customer service.

Yelp
I feel as though I've aged as soon as I walk in. I dont know if its the decor or the workers or the smell of stale coffee. On the other hand, they do sell cute New Orleans themed gifts. Oh and they offer alcohol aka cordials on the cheap

Dawanna M.

Yelp
It was weird, we are a black family and felt the whole time we were being watched. You felt eyes on you the whole time. No one smiled at all. This is the treatment we receive after spending $25.00. It was not crowded. It was me, my husband, my son and daughter. We expected better.
google avatar

Yelp
I come here when visiting back home, mainly for nostalgic eating of the glazed/candies donuts and the heritage mckensie's stuff (petit fours and *king cakes*) of my childhood. Of course the petit fours are way too sweet to me now, but they are just as i remember them. The donuts are pretty good warm. And the mckensies king cakes are the best! Convenient location and nice to have a drive thru.

Angela E.

Yelp
AWESOME Staff!!!!! Very friendly! And a huge variety of items to choose from. Whenever I visit my hometown, I will definately visit this location!
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
When the donuts are fresh, they are great. At 9pm they are just good. Great variety and a super friendly staff. The Kastle Burger and fries is great as well. Plenty of seating, and some unique merchandise for sale as well.

Yelp
Was early for church, so I decided to stop in for a light breakfast with my 2 girls. Ordered 2 donuts 1 muffin and a specialty omelette. The food was great, the girls and I enjoyed it. The problem arose when the girl with the sandy red ponytail plat, brought my omelette to the table. She said "spinach omelette." I said "I had the specialty omelette." She said again "spinach omelette." I said "there is no spinach omelette on the menu, is that the specialty omelette?". She said "Spinach omelette, Specialty omelette, same thing!". She put the plate down and left. My 10 year old daughter then asked, "did she just roll her eyes at us and walk away?". I said "yep.". I told another employee what happened, and she said that she is rude to us too, and that she would tell the manager. That was comforting to us to know that she wasn't rude to us because we were the only "Black" family in the store, and that she is rude to everyone... I guess. I could say more, but I digress...

Tad B.

Yelp
Our neighborhood Tastee. They close at 8 on Mondays. Went to grab kastleburgers at 7:54; gave them a call to give them a heads-up, we're two minutes away. "Oh, we're closed," says the guy who answers the phone. "No you're not. You close at 8. I'm in the car and I'm two minutes away." "Our clock says it's 8 now. We're closed." Great customer service. Not sure it's worth putting up with your Faux News television sets to get doughnuts from you anymore. Customers apparently just get in your way.
google avatar

Kev L.

Yelp
You just don't know what you have until you lose it. And unfortunately, since McKenzie's no longer exist and Krispy Kreme taste like Krispy Dookie, Tastee has the #1 donut's in the metro. In my case, I am happy with their good o'l plain glazed donut. It's perfect in just about every way. The ONLY donut that has ever existed that could handle up on these was McKenzie's buttermilk donut. So if you re in NOLA and need something that's NOT Cafe Du Monde, this is your spot.
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Apparently Tastee Donuts do not have babies in their king cakes. I bought 2 for my son's classroom and they were a bit disappointed. I didn't think to ask if there was a baby in there ‍.

Yelp
My favorite donut shop. Good selection, nice staff and very clean. Have everything from donuts to burgers to cakes to bring to a party. Delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Tastee! Best coffee in the area! Love the donuts and pastries. The staff is super friendly and always willing to brew a fresh pot of coffee.
google avatar

Adam N.

Yelp
Good fresh donuts!!! I had the Bavarian cream, chocolate glaze, glazed donuts with a cup of coffee and a breakfast platter to boot. The grits and biscuits were amazing, bacon, was see through and eggs were on the small side. Total was 11.25, kind of pricey

Noah H.

Yelp
Donuts are amazing. Service is great and i love the chocolate sprinkle donut. love the atmosphere of the store
google avatar

Breanna H.

Yelp
They're donuts are amazing! Esp the apple fritters fresh out of the grease. Not a fan of the kastle burger. Friendly staff and cheap sweets.
google avatar

Yelp
I know this isn't the BEST place out there, but there is something to be said for comfort food. This place is pretty quick and easy to get in and out of.... they have hot breakfast, not just doughnuts, even though I do like the doughnuts too. Also, they have good ol' McKenzie's turtles and king cakes. Oh, and the other night, after the parade, I ran in and got some Kastle burgers.. nothing hits the spot like a six pack of burgers and a couple of turtles to chase them.... makes my heart and my stomach happy, happy, happy!!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
I don't know how people eat krispy kreme and rave about them. I am a cake donut girl and therefore I love the Tastee/McKenzies buttermilk drops and they will forever have a place in my heart! The Tastee burgers are also awesome and up there for cheap late night eats. I wouldn't recommend the McKenzie recipe king cakes though. They are a bit dry (even for a brioche style)
google avatar

Carlene T.

Yelp
Very rude and unaccomadating. I had three really bad experiences at this location. Go to another location. They don't deserve your business!
google avatar

Arty C.

Yelp
Disgusting! If I could give negative stars, I would. I ordered their catfish special, which I had to wait fifteen minutes for. When I went in and saw the employees, I should've just made a beeline for the exit...completely and utterly un-hygienic. I wasn't expecting five star food for the price. However, I expected palatable food. Instead we received rancid fish and soggy fries. I will not return and will warn others to stay away. Their seventh ward and kenner locations are much better.
google avatar

Cheryl H.

Yelp
Never order the beignets. They were delivered to our table. Covered in way too much powered sugar to disguise the fact that they were burnt. The inside was raw. These were the worst. The owner should scratch this from the menu.
google avatar

Ariana J.

Yelp
I have only had donuts from here twice, but both times they were fresh and delicious . I highly recommend the donuts from here if you want some place other than dunkin donuts.

Mary H.

Yelp
The drive-thru can not be trusted to sell fresh donuts! I complained so let's see if they are fresh when I return! Stayed tuned.
google avatar

Kelsey H.

Yelp
Absolutely freakin disgusting will never set foot in here again. Nor will I ever recommend to someone ever again. We went in after a soccer game with my son one night he had done well and asked for doughnuts so we stopped in. While we ordered a young man had come from the restroom took the order and the money and we waited. While standing at the counter the same man who was now using a filthy rag to clean the counter and tables came back around the counter and started plating our food. French fries that he grabbed over the top of touching the entire top layer!!!!! I asked him nicely why did he put his hands all over our food he stared at me like I was an idiot. So I asked do you guys wear gloves. He said no and sat the food on the. Counter. Gross. The fries went in the trash and I asked for a number to talk to a manager.. Called several times and no one could give me an answer.!! So eventually I left it alone. But I will never go back ever.. Ugh

D R.

Yelp
My wife and I eat here a couple of times a month. We can get the chicken basket and split it and we both leave full! The mini burgers are just a little something to get you thru to your next meal. Just plain good solid food! And unlike many other places (Cop A Donut) you can actually walk in to TD and they have donuts in the case and a very good selection! The people are nice and they are very good at keeping the line moving. When you are looking for a quick bite, stop at TD you won't be disappointed!

Richard M.

Yelp
I have been a weekly customer to Tasttee for over 15 years. Once a week I go there for there turtles. This week I was very dissapointed when they would not divide a container of 12 to 6. I would not expect this if I wasnt a returning customer. just cant see how the owner would rather loose a customer then satisfie one. I guess this is how busineses are once they have been successful.. Never again. Ricky 5046660349

Yelp
I've always been a BIG fan of McKenzie's growing up in New Orleans and mourned the loss of my favs (chocolate blackout cake, chocolate petit fours, turtles, cinnamon rolls, buttercream coffee cake with the coconut and pecans, brownies, pineapple delight cake, buttermilk drops) when the shop closed. After moving away from NO following Katrina and returning for a visit just recently, I was delighted to see the sign above Tastee's announcing the return of my McKenzie favorites. Never mind the less than friendly girl standing at the register, I had to have my fix prior to heading out to the airport. The buttermilk drops were passable. Very sweet but not as moist as I remembered it. The chocolate petit four was a far cry from the original. I recall the authentic chocolate petit four to have a green leaf on the top vs the dark purple star found on the new cake square. The frosting was dark brown vs light brown and shiny vs dull and sticky vs dry. I recall the authentic frosting to be more candy like vs sticking to the roof of my mouth like Duncan Hines canned frosting. I passed on the cinnamon rolls which had always been my all time favorite. The packages sitting on the counter had no appeal whatsoever. PURE DISSAPPOINTMENT. Someone got duped. Then again, you can't have doughnut people making McKenzie's favorites. I bet that the doughnut people have never tasted or have ever seen a McKenzie fav. Satisfied my curiosity but I'll continue to keep the memory alive and scrap the Tastee/McKenzie experience.
