Yelp
Donuts are daunting, and I try to avoid them. Guilt overtook me and I mostly swore them off after making a very sad lunch out of three Krispy Kreme donuts on one very sad day. But that was Krispy Kreme, who I assume to be the rival for this location of Tastee Donuts in Metairie due to proximity, so, "WHATEVER" to Krispy Kreme.
One of their slogans, which I felt I was making up, and I still feel like I'm making it up because of how bland it is, though it's totally on their boxes, is "It's a New Orleans thing!" And I guess it is: their library of sweets has included McKenzie's goods in recent years. Those who've grown up in this area know what's up: here's a beacon still shining from your childhood. For transplants to New Orleans, the nostalgia-triggering presence of McKenzie's baked goods probably doesn't connect so directly.
So what put me at Tastee Donuts on my last check-in was just that: Tastee sells the old school McKenzie's king cake. The dough is soft and sweet, and there's no icing to be found. King cake traditionalists will point to this as a superior king cake, and hype or not, it's fantastic, and worth checking out during that blissful period when the king cake makes its majestic presence known.
Tastee's also known for their Kastle Burgers, little sliders in the same vein as Krystal and White Castle, and another reason I was there. After debating over "uhhh, how many of these can/should I eat," I noticed a menu item literally called "Special Meal": three Kastle Burgers, fries, a drink and ... A DONUT! For five bucks! A very scary meal, but pretty cool.
A downside for this location is the parking situation. There are about seven spots for cars in a tiny parking lot / drivethru. You can probably park at the Frostop/former Pizza Hut next door, or you could, of course, go through the drivethru.
So, I can't chime in on their donuts, which is the item listed in their name. I don't know. I might buy some for my office tomorrow? This location's been going strong versus the Krispy Kreme across the street for a few years now, and I wish them luck in the coming years.
