The Best Doughnuts in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"A New Orleans childhood favorite from back in the day, Tastee is well known for king cakes, buttermilk drops, and doughnuts, not necessarily in that order, but some folks swear by the apple fritters. There are two locations to satisfy." - Eater Staff

Google
Love those donuts but only one of the counter ladies has a halfway decent attitude. Still it's a nice place to go before work if you bring a dozen donuts back to your staff.

Google
Please stop Burning the donuts they come out with grease cooked in them. I’ve been going there on and off for 30 years when they’re good they’re good but most of the time they burn one side and it cooks in the Grease in the donuts and you get a mouthful of grease. I stopped go their try McDonald’s try other donut places it takes too long to go to the McDonald’s I go back. Hope that is better always the same. Please find someone that can cook them like they’re supposed to be consistently. Don’t know why other people don’t complain I guess everyone just gets used to grease. The people that work there are extremely nice and friendly. I liked them very much.

I've done this tour many of times, with this being the 3rd, and this it gets better everytime! Lyndel was my tour guide today and she is very knowledgable of the city. You will definitely enjoy!

If you're in need for an early and quick breakfast, stop at Tastee. The service is quick, the food is fresh and the grit are on point. It's not the biggest location, but the staff is quite friendly. My family and I took our meal to go, but we all agreed this spot deserves more than one visit.

Google
Amazing lunch and top notice service from Ms Angie and Mr Mike. Ms Angie talked to us and made us feel like family. She was so awesome! She made recommendations and Mr Mike had our meal up in no time flat and even came out to tell us goodbye!

Was really good. I tried the bacon, egg sandwich. My kids love it too. We close and will be back, too good.

Google
Their variety of donuts does it for me everything. Customer service is top notch.

Google
Fresh, hot, tasty. Catfish, cheese grits, eggs, toast and chocolate cake doughnuts. Mmmm..mmmmm. The Lady who took my order was so awesome I told her I was coming back next Sunday. The cook waved. Stopped here on Father's Day to get breakfast for my Father at 6 a.m. They had been open for an entire hour already. Very pleasant crew on deck; even the dude out front offering to do some small task in exchange for change was pleasant. I "donated." Nothing comes to a closed fist or heart.

Yelp
Can't beat cheap and quick. Donuts were delicious, grits were smooth... Great choice for a quick easy breakfast while staying around the corner in an AirBnB. I've already been there twice today ;)

Yelp
Yes, the doughnuts and coffee are exactly what you hoped they would be -- but don't sleep on that fully-dressed fish sandwich. Easily in my top 5 ever.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in at 12:02 on a Sunday and was informed that they were out of food. Worker stated it was because they close early on Sunday's. Confusing, as the sign outside states they're open til 1. This is the same place that would not allow takeout during the beginning of the pandemic. Take your money somewhere they actually want it. This place ain't it.

Yelp
I got three fresh donuts for $3 and some change in 2024 , that's crazy! The chocolate donut with glaze was the best I've ever had. The apple fritter is massive! Service was great, no complaints. This is the hole-in-the-wall type of place. It's real divey here and resembles a small, community-centric establishment that serves up classics. I didn't get to try any of the food but the donuts were IT baby!
google avatar

Yelp
These are some of the best donuts around, especially while they are hot! Will def go back when I'm in the area!

Yelp
I absolutely love TASTEE KING CAKES. The problem is I don't like to be forced to eat a whole king cake. They decided to help me out. Their king cakes are so moist and full of flavor.

Dee L.

Yelp
This is the donut shop I grew up with! Beside McKenzies(best King Cakes) that Tastee now sell which is Great since they are no longer here. The Tastee in Kenner, La makes donuts fresh to order so that mean they're Always Hot! Way Better than Krispy Kream

Yelp
" Tasty Donuts & Breakfast Sandwiches " We went to the Tastee Restaurant Deli & Donuts in New Orleans and had some very tasty donuts and a breakfast sandwich. The Donuts were very fresh and had a lot of chocolate on them for a very good taste. The Apple fritters were so tasty.

Yelp
Don't be scared. Just go inside. Donuts look a little old? They're not, I promise. Somehow they're always fresh. White Castle-like burgers? I was hesitant but my companion loved them, and promptly ate 2. Sit at the bar stools and watch the old tv with the employees or keep trotting down Esplanade shoving donuts into your mouth while burning calories.

Yelp
This spot is so easy to give 5 stars. We loved interacting with everyone here, and the food was fantastic. We sat at the counter to eat, and the cashier was so patient and kind with every single person who came in. Everyone was masked up, and while I'm on the subject of safety, the shop itself was spotless. We got coffee and breakfast sandwiches, one with catfish. All of it came out fast, searing hot, and fantastic. The chef even asked how it all was :) I got a blueberry donut as a wee appetizer and it was the tits. I really cannot recommend this place enough. Stop by if you're in town!

Tequisha M.

Yelp
Awesome customer service and delicious food! I ordered the BLT and cinnamon roll. Most definitely will recommend.

Yelp
This review is based on the buttermilk drop king cake I was lucky enough to grab on one of my king cake collection days in Nola lol. The great thing is you can call ahead and ask what they have available that morning. These buttermilk drops were so delicious. They had that old-fashion donut crispy glazed exterior - somewhat like an apple fritter. I shared with my family and we finished them off in one day! I have always been a fan of donut shop king cakes but these buttermilk drops took it to a whole new level. And the whole king cake was only $13!

Yelp
Seriously some of the BEST donuts in New Orleans. I wish this location stayed open longer!

Yelp
FANTASTIC place for donuts. I had a glazed and apple fritter. I wish I took pics as the fritter is HUGE!!! It probably weighed half a pound. The donut was great as well kind of doughy.

Yelp
I love going to taste the donuts are fresh an you never wait long an the service is friendly you can't bet going to tastes written by darnell

Yelp
This location on Esplanade was great. The customer service was above efficient and the food was good and fresh. This location of Taystees provided me with one of the best customer service experiences I've had while on vacation in New Orleans!! I highly recommend the breakfast platter and gumbo (as have others). Honeybun tastes like a plain glaze and is not worth the extra (if any, not sure of price).

Yelp
Luuuuv this place! Only 1 street over from my moms house so I visit very often when I'm here in N.O. Alwayssss consistently fresh awesome tasting donuts (I may have tried them all lol). Outstanding customer service and the hot coffee is good too! Not to mention that the customers are very friendly as well! I'll why that stands out so much to me, maybe because I'm from NYC where we get our coffee and donuts on the fly so lil 3-5 minute conversations don't exist... Anyyywhooo... They have Kastleburgers (if you are from NYC they are White Castle burgers) only MUCH BETTER as stated by my VERY PICKY 11 year old! If you are looking for a great place for sweets in the morning or lunch in the afternoon GOOOO TO TASTEE! You can sit down and enjoy your pastry and coffee or you can grab and go! However you like it, you won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
I don't even know why im writing this review...maybe for tourists, because locals know that Tastee is a city staple! I must admit without any bias that these are the best donuts in the world! They put Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts, and these trendy places on Instagram to shame! Literally all my life of 20 years I've wanted these donuts for breakfast everyday on my way to school or church. The donuts are fresh literally all day long, how they do it, I don't know and I don't care. The glaze is flaky and not too sweet; cake donuts are perfectly spiced. You won't find flavors of the day or month, donuts with cereal or unicorn tears. Just really good old fashioned donuts. Every donut is nice and fluffy without it being airy like Krispy Kreme or stone hard like Dunkin. I have never had to microwave these...probably because they never last that long around me to make it home, but they're literally THAT fresh. Moving on, besides their world famous donuts they are infamous for Kastle burgers and hot plates. Literally never tried anything else but the coveted donuts. It's cash only, they're slot machines in the rear, and there's seating at the counter.

Yelp
THE RULES: "cash only", "order at the register", "absolutely no refunds", "don't touch the freezer", and oh yeah "have a nice day".... "THIS IS THE KIND OF PLACE THAT'S DISAPPEARING". Well said Kim H. I don't know if I like Tastee Donuts so much for what it is, or the idea of what it is: the last whimper of a bygone food dive (like the shuttered Hummingbird on St Charles or Takee Outee on Bourbon). If you value the 1950's authenticity of "Please U" you'll love Tastee. MISS LAURA is what drives this diner. She's sweet, efficient, and knows her regulars by name. Miss Laura is sort of the Den Mother of that über-diverse neighborhood. SLIDERS! No they're not the $3-each upscale versions at District Donuts, they are the true greasy Kastleburgers that come 6 to a sack for $5.95.

Yelp
Back before...you know...the 'Thing' in 2005, this place used to be open 24 hours a day and the only time I ever really stopped by was some time between the hours of 11pm and 4 am, usually on the drive home from the French Quarter after consuming several adult beverages. It was PERFECT for grabbing something greasy to sop up the alcohol and coat my belly before hitting the sack. These days it is only open from 6am - 6pm. I rarely need this volume of grease during these hours, so I don't go here as much as I used to, but if your in the neighborhood and wants some donuts or apple fritters, castle burgers or fried chicken, or a decent catfish or fried shrimp sandwich, they can hook you up!

Taryn B.

Yelp
I loved the grits! They were hot and yummy! and my friend got the stack of burger that he inhale we loved it here and are looking forward to the delicious doughnuts!!

Morgan B.

Yelp
I feel some kind of way that we ordered the blueberry cake donuts and there was some sort of metal inside of it. THANK GOODNESS I didn't give a piece of this donut to my daughter. This lets me know that they are unclean and being lazy while preparing food. This could have seriously harmed me. Unacceptable and not to be trusted.

Yelp
As my second foray to the Crescent City, I actually stayed very close to this place. It was just couple block walk, and ended up being a quick little place to get breakfast. As others have said, cash only. If you don't have any on hand, visit the Valero catty-corner from Tastee. It's a $0.99 fee ATM fee then march back over to Tastee for some donuts, which are great! I got a picked up a variety, and while I'm not a huge fan of donuts for breakfast, it sheer willpower that stopped me from consuming each of these tastee treats. The glazed cake donuts were perfection, and the assortment of custard filled, powdered, and jelly filled were all delicious. Service was quick and service friendly, and the prices were good compared to other donut shops. Very local kinda vibe which is generally what I prefer over the more sterile feel you get at a lot of the chains. If donuts aren't your thing, you can pick up breakfast biscuit of the usual sort (no gravy biscuits though). If I'm back in town, I'd stop by again!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Don't waste your time at this location. I've been here 3 times and they are always sold out of doughnuts. Go somewhere else or to the Tastee on Clearview. I won't make this mistake again.
google avatar

Kev J.

Yelp
I make the drive to the Kenner location because they take the time and make it with love. Customer service goes a long way and earns repeat business.
google avatar

Lindsey S.

Yelp
There's something about hot coffee in a styrofoam cup. I always ask for a large hot coffee and my total is $1.86, can't beat dat. The early morning employees that I've met are super sweet. From my experience, the donuts are always fresh and delicious. I'm looking forward to trying other items on their menu!
google avatar

Mel B.

Yelp
Great coffee. The waitstaff were so kind. Even the cook was all smiles and had a kind word to say. It's like they treat you like family. The best part of coming here besides the incredible doughnuts is the catfish. I've never had anything so clean tasting. I'll definitely be back for more. Love this place. No wonder it's busy. They hustle hustle to keep the line moving.

Yelp
The state slogan for Louisiana, for those who don't know, is Sportsmens Paradise, a little counter-intuitive, but what isn't around here. If your idea of a sport is one that requires nothing but sitting around and kibitzing and putting unhealthy things in your body, nothing could be more accurate, though, as we are a paradise for that. The donuts are tastee, you cant have a name like Tastee donuts if they weren't. The coffee is typical donut shop coffee, the fritters are fritterlicious and for those who prefer to think of themselves as culinary explorers, let them nuke up a few castle burgers for you...our local generic version of White Castle, and as delicious and mysterious as the originals. What makes the place stand out though is that its still an old style donut shop, with donut shop stools and a donut shop counter. If there is anything more pure America than that, I cant think of it. Its a friendly place, locals lingering while waiting to show up late for jobs they wont work very hard at when they arrive. Easy to talk to whoever is there. Worth making a special trip out for if your visiting the city? Maybe not, but if you are taking a nice bike ride up Esplanade to City Park, stop in, get a sugar high, and a feeling for just how nice it is to live in a place where the feeling of friendliness is standard.

Yelp
I can dig fancy doughnuts like everyone else, but if you want a real deal doughnut without the fluff, tastee is a must! Perfect glazed doughnuts and bear claws.

Yelp
As I lay here (in Seattle) thinking about all the Mardi Gras festivities kicking off back home in NOLA, the only thing I can really really think about is how much I will miss my Fat Tuesday morning Tastee donuts. Tastee on Esplanade is everything. Great service, excellent donuts, and the price! I didn't know how good I had it until they charged me $2.50 for a donut up north. Lord, have mercy. No. I may or may not have had Tastee donuts daily when I went to Cabrini High down the street. I really should have been chubbier back then. So. Many. Donuts. I recommend the classic glaze and glazed bavarian cream. You won't be sorry. And thus ends the sad musings of a donut-craving loon thousands of miles away. Uh, go get you some Tastee, y'all. I'll just be here (in Seattle) crying.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great apple fritter GET TO THIS STORE! The counter ladies work swiftly and efficiently too.

Yelp
Small Mom & Pop donut & fried chicken place on Esplanade near Rampart. These were the best apple fritters I've ever had, and I try fritters everywhere I go! Definitely a place for locals, since it's outside the Quarter in a commercial area, convenient to the bus line & I-10. Has about 6 or 8 stools to sit at. Good strong coffee. The creme filled donuts were also good & fresh. They sell about 8 other types of pastries, chicken wings & fried chicken. The fried chicken was really good...crispy & juicey...yumm! Went back for more fritters & chicken before we left town. This is the kind of place that is disappearing. The staff were very welcoming. Cash only!

Yelp
Neighborhood donut and coffee counter with some great people to meet and hang out with. I had a business meeting across the street at Stephen Ambrose Historical tours and spotted the sign Coffee and Donuts. I tried a lemon filled glazed and felt the bliss of a sweet and tart filling inside a melt in your mouth crispy, airy donut. Can not think of a better simple donut. I enjoyed this at the counter paired with a small cup of coffee for $2.00. I am not even crying that I had to spend a $2 fee at the ATM because this place is cash only. The employees and the regulars there were great, they had me slapping their backs telling jokes and talking sports within minutes. Perfect place to warm up for my meeting and enjoy a New Orleans day in a cool neighborhood.

Steve M.

Yelp
Great quick get your day started on the go bfast sammich and blueberry donut. Coffee isn't bad either!
google avatar

Moira R.

Yelp
I've gotten donuts here a couple of times. The donuts are okay, but they aren't anything I would go out of my way for. That said, I pretty much live right next to this place and I have for 2 years... so obviously they can't be that good if I've only bothered to go a couple of times. I'm considering trying another location just to see if they are better other places in the city.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
Perfect place to pick up a dozen donuts on the way to work in the Quarter, City Park or St John's Bayou. $8.00 for Glazed and $9.00 for Filled/Mixed. Tell 'em the Duke sent ya.
google avatar

Roger T.

Yelp
Much better than Lakeview store! Lg coffe and a bearclaw for $3.50. Pastry was delicious albeit a little uncooked near thw center. This didn't really detract from it. I inhaled it. Coffee was good. Service was prompt. The place was pretty busy.

Daniel E.

Yelp
Step through the gas station store-style door and you are transported back at least 40 years. The prices are very reasonable. The sandwiches and donuts are rather good. Downside is that it's an extreeemely local thing (you feel a bit out of place if you're a university student who recently moved here like me). If you can power through that though it's not a bad place to grab some breakfast. Cash only, no refunds, don't touch the freezer...I imagine they've had some unpleasant experiences through the years.

Bryan W.

Yelp
The doughnuts are great but the King Cake is not a traditional Tastee Donut King Cake. It was totally unexpected that it was like a dry cheap cinnamon role from the corner store. It was very disappointing to everyone at my office that was expecting a King Cake from Tastee. Not sure if they are buying cakes for re-sale or not. If you buy King Cake from them be prepared that it is not the doughnut cake of the past.

An N.

Yelp
Donuts are soooo fluffy and as good as Krispy Kreme.

Harrison D.

Yelp
Anybody from New Orleans knows that Tastee Donuts' hot glazed is the donut equivalent of Di Fara's cheese pizza. Krispy Kreme can go f%*k itself.

dcxbox d.

Yelp
the mckenzies pastry products are great. don't understant why they don't make mckenzies dounuts like glaze as well instead of the tastees ones. but also they price the products a little too much buttermilk drops are awesome, but its pricey to buy by the dozon. $3-5 should be a fair price, they could advertise and sell boatloads of them.
