Yelp
Just what is Shanghai cuisine? I understand the derogatory slang "Shanghai" to mean, "to be forcefully taken". Or the slang "Shanghaied", "induced to do something by means of fraud or coercion". (Merriam-Webster, 2024)
I found this: "Shanghai cuisine is more flavored (darker sauce) and is well-liked by Western diners. Cantonese cuisine is lighter in taste, relying on the freshness of the ingredients." Today, when we were served our food, the obvious color differences were clear. Although similar in ingredients and preparations to most Western Cantonese Chinese restaurants, our food came swiftly from the kitchen and had a richer color and deeper aroma than what we might get served at our usual Chinese establishments.
Our first dish was an appetizer, Cilantro and Shredded Tofu. Served cold, almost salad-like, this paired well with our main entree, Ginger Scallion Beef as both were brought out almost simultaneously as requested. Today's menu presented a challenge as many offerings had caught our attention. The mostly Caucasian female table of eight next to us was throwing down and had every imaginable menu item displayed in front of their party, so we got to see the gamut of offerings that stimulated our desires. Nope, today we were trying to uphold our Keto diet. Our server knew what was carb-free or reduced carbohydrates. He also pointed out that most of the entrees on the menu were strictly protein or vegetable mixed and you can order rice on the side.
I think we both said, "Wow", simultaneously when we first tasted the delightful shredded tofu, which got our interest for additional Keto cooking uses of the tofu for preparations in our own kitchen . . . , now where to buy, where to buy? Even using the shredded tofu for summer salads at our own pool-side barbecues sounds fun, flavorful and the texture is interesting to say the least.
Service was very friendly and on point albeit a bit slower paced as every other table was full on this Sunday lunch and occupied by all Asian customers (if I'm allowed to say that). So, the food has gotta be good.
Clean inside and simply decorated. Many outside tables facing the street as well. Even the bathrooms were clean.
A darn good place to get some good food. If you haven't yet tried Shanghai cuisine, it is full of flavor, texture and color.
