Passing through town to see the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Rickwood Field, I was tipped to Tasty Town for happy hour. With a local Canaba Brewing Del Rio Lager and gin & tonic we munched the Classic Humus with warm pita and veggies. We enjoyed the vibe, drinks and appetizers so much we stayed for dinner and weren't disappointed.
The Souvlaki Plate of charbroiled beef tenderloin was ordered medium rare and delivered perfectly. In addition to the tzatziki and fresh tomatoes with mild onions, my sides were beets and green beans in a Greek tomato sauce. My wife had a Tasty Salad of field greens, beets, pickled onions, kalamata olives, fennel, radishes, perfectly boiled egg and a yogurt based ranch dressing. Other entrees that looked good at nearby tables were Greek Chicken, Pastichio and Lamb Pasta with orzo, tomatoes, olives and mint.
The wine list featured selections from Willamette Valley, OR to Argentina, Spain, Italy and Peloponnese, Greece. Sweets offerings included Loukoumades, baklava and Lisa Donovan's Chocolate Church Cake. Chocoholic that I am, we split Lisa's cake; it rolled my eyes back in my head.
The restaurant is in the UAB sector of town, convenient to the Institute. The black and white industrial decor with tall windows and ceilings was metro fun. The service from Evan was helpful and attentive. A chat with Cedric, who has managed restaurants from Charlotte to Los Angeles, left me nodding knowingly at my full satisfaction with the evening.
