Yelp
A true definition of a mom and pop! Literally! I was referred to this location by my homie Crystal as we discussed several local restaurants in the area. After reading reviews and trusting her judgement, I decided to give Tater Bread a try. Located close to downtown Durham, it's a small, homely/humble location that appears to be family-owned. It's pretty obvious & right down my alley!
The menu is easily accessible as it's enlarged on the side of the building so it's rather easy to find what you want. Luckily, we ran into the son and asked him directly. Real cool dude, super humble and patient as my mom and aunt asked him a million questions...lol. He recommended the salmon cakes as they are a big hit in the Durham community, but I chose the corned beef hash, which comes with 2 eggs/cheese, home fries (potatoes and onions) and your choice of wheat or white toast. My mom got the same, and my auntie ordered the same just instead of corned beef hash, she got the smoked turkey sausage. If you're from the country, Tater Bread puts you in the mind of a Piggly Wiggly/Pak A Sak style breakfast. Serves the purpose and straight to the point, and is really good.
It's rather hard to screw up breakfast, but a lot of restaurants in fact do. It's like the perfect breakfast to hold you during a long-winded AME Zion church service if your pastor preaches past 1:30 pm and won't shut the hell up and you ready to leave because you hungry as s**t, the only thing is they're closed on Sunday. Definitely going back and making this one of my breakfast picks in the 919! All 3 of us ate for $20 bucks.
