Oreo Owner Mondelez Buys Tate’s Bake Shop for $500 Million | Eater

"Based in Southampton, New York, this family-developed cookie maker is best known for thin, flat, crisp chocolate chip cookies meant to be dunked: they soften with a five-second dip in milk, tea, or coffee without breaking. The packaged cookies offer a pleasing, not-too-sweet balance of butter, brown sugar, and dark chocolate chips—more of a tan wafer than a gooey fresh-baked biscuit—so they succeed as a shelf-stable product without glazes or gimmicks. Recently acquired by Mondelez International (the Oreo maker) for about $500 million, the brand is being positioned as a premium, higher-price-point offering with plans for wider distribution while operating as a standalone business, though there is concern that scaling production could pressure the original facility and lead to recipe changes. The company keeps a relatively restrained lineup— including a gluten-free line, a vanilla cookie useful for strawberry shortcake, coconut crisps for crumbling over ice cream, a popular white chocolate–macadamia variety, and limited flavors like Key Lime Coconut and an orange-scented vanilla—and many fans and food personalities hope the new owner preserves its Hamptons cottage roots and simple product philosophy rather than overextending the brand with gimmicky spin-offs." - Daniela Galarza

Google
A very nice surprise in Southampton. Tate's cookies are phenomenal but the store is great. Their coffee was delicious. Iced and hot, both are great. I recommend the Lavender Honey Iced. The scones are so good, raisin and also the apricot ginger. Fresh! Great atmosphere too. Go see them. Tell em Barsnobs sent ya!

Ordered a muffin and some shortbreads. Muffin was average but the shortbreads rather tasty. You can buy all the pre-packaged Tate cookies down one block at Stop and Shop for half the price. I wish they make some store only cookies for us as gifts.

Google
I come here every year and the selection is always great and their deserts are phenomenal. If you are looking for fresh baked versions of the cookies you’d buy in the store, they don’t have them, but everything they do have will surpass your expectations.

Y’all I need sweets to live sorry I had to come here okay… I was just gonna get cookies but I may have gotten more… We all know Tate’s cookies, they’re crispy, crunchy, have the perfect amount of chocolate, YUM! But I did see they had a limited edition Mint Chocolate Chip flavor which I gasped at the sight of because I LOOOOVE MINTTTT. These had the perfect amount it kept the classic Tate’s cookie flavor and added a perfect essence of mint. Also got a brownie which was HELLA DENSE OMG like a solid brick like ZAYUMMM (this is a good thing) I also got fresh coffee crumble cake from the bakery which was FIRE. Equally soft on the bottom and crunchy on the top. Paired it with an iced goldenmilk latte which was beautiful and tasted pretty good but even better with some of the self serve simple syrup!

Google
Home of the famous Tates cookies. Lots of other pastries, muffins and sweets. They also do lots of seasonal treats.

So yummy!! It was better than I thought😊 Latte is not bad. and coconut cookies are so good!

Google
I'm absolutely obsessed with Tate's! The cookies are amazing--I felt like I was in cookie heaven, especially with the limited edition flavors they offer. My favorites are the blueberry and walnut chocolate chip; they're thin, crispy, and perfectly buttery. While I was there, I also tried a cupcake and coffee, and both were excellent. Definitely a 10/10 experience!

Yelp
Ahhhh made it to Tate's and what a treat. I wanted to get everything, from cookies to cupcakes to merch! Everything we tried from the big cookies to the packages cookies (ones you don't find at grocery store) - so so good, buttery and quality you can taste. To me, it's a definite stop while in the Hamptons! There is normally a line, but it goes fast and I felt like I had to know exactly what I wanted because the queue behind me is forming while the staff is ever ready to take the order! The pressure!

Yelp
I received a chocolate chip pie from Tate's Bake shop in South Hampton by mail, and the presentation was nice--it came in a plastic casing inside a box. However, when the three of us tasted it, we all agreed it was beyond tasteless and awful! I would never serve this to guests. Since they advertise a "complete satisfaction" guarantee, I called their customer service. Unfortunately, they only have voicemail, and despite calling for four days in a row, I never received a callback. Very disappointed with both the product and the lack of customer service follow-through.

Yelp
The original Tate's is a cute and quaint outpost. It's small inside and the line moves quickly. There's a good selection of breakfast bakery items including a sour cream coffee cake and assorted pastries. The blueberry muffins were the best thing we had. The croissant was also good. We would pass on the cinnamon swirl next time, it really didn't have any flavor. There's also a large beverage menu with seasonal drinks like strawberry lemonade. We picked up some bags of cookies and there's other assorted bagged desserts like chocolates and even a tate's candle! Parking was easy even on a Sunday morning as they have a lot.

Yelp
I mean, how cute is this place?! My kids would've destroyed everything inside in 1.3 minutes if it weren't for their cute outdoor sitting space! The vibe is totally what you'd expect and absolutely adorable. I had to snag some gifts for a few people (and a mug for myself!). They have a TON of delicacies beyond cookies. Worth a stop for us non-locals!

Yelp
The OG Tate's Bakeshop is so charming! They have all kinds of cupcakes, cakes, and baked goods, but I was disappointed they didn't have fresh Tate's cookies available--only the prepackaged ones. Still, the shop is adorable with a few tables outside surrounded by flowers and greenery. It gets pretty crowded, but the staff was nice, and it's worth checking out if you're in Southampton.

Yelp
THIS is where it all started for the famous Tate's cookies! You'll see Tate's cookies sold everywhere these days from local grocery stores to supermarkets and even Costco and Target. But it all began here in the Hamptons. First and foremost, just know that you can't actually purchase freshly made cookies here. I learned that a few years back when I was hoping to find some freshly baked warm cookies and was bummed. They're manufactured in bulk at an off-site factory. BUT, their famous packaged cookies are available for sale, along with cakes, cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, and daily dessert specials. Their cookies actually come fairly close to tasting like homemade cookies, at least for packaged cookies. I actually try to stay far away from ultra processed foods, but I will make occasional exceptions for Tates. I shared them with a neighbor who enjoyed them as much as I did. In fact, she enjoyed them so much she came here the following day and bought 3 more different kinds for me to try (thank you, my friend!!). This shop is fairly small, but cute and fun. Workers are always nice and I always find something to get.

Yelp
No trip to Southampton would be complete without stopping by the original Tate's. The quaint, homey interior is small but packed full of delicious sweets, savory pasties and coffee and tea options. Staff is friendly and patient, as people try to decide which of the many baked goods to select. Lovely option for grab-and-go treats and snacks, it's popular, so plan for a little wait at peak times.

Yelp
I have always been a fan of Tate's Bake Shop cookies from the grocery store. To find the actual store in The Hamptons, we had to go inside to check it out. You can dine indoor or outlook with some sweets or order coffee/tea. We ordered an Oreo cupcake and it was perfect, the flavor, texture, no dry, not too sweet and a good sweet treat.

Yelp
Delicious cookies, baked goods, coffee, ice cream and more - all made locally on Long Island.

Yelp
We have always loved Tate's - whether fresh from the Southhampton shop or mass produced in thos famous "green bags" in nearly every local store. Classic Choloate Chip, Lemon and the limited-edition flavors (Caramel Coffee was amazing). are a must for us. We enjoy Tate's and seeing the company grow over the years is exciting.

Yelp
Underwhelming. Love tates cookies so we made a trip out here from Merrick. They sell the same cookies I buy in my local supermarket. I was hoping to try fresh Tate cookies but they don't have anything of the sort. We bought a couple of pastries to try and they were ok at best. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here.

Yelp
I received cookies from my job at Oat Crest Senior Living. I got the salted caramel chocolate chip cookies and they was burnt. I got a hint of the caramel flavor but mostly Burnet cookie bottoms. I took pictures as well. With this being a thin cookie. It should have not been baked to long. Very dissatisfied and this was trying this new flavor. Im a salt caramel lover. This ruin it for me for this company.

Yelp
This place is awesome! By far the best coffee in the area! Also the baked goods are great! Highly recommend the chocolate chip cookie pie and sour cream coffee cake.

Yelp
It's a delight visiting the actual Tate cookie store. You will see a variety of cookie options for you to purchase. They have limited outdoor seating and parking at the back. I ordered the key lime bar but it was too sweet for me. I ordered the blondie cookie as well. The coconut flakes could've been smaller which would make it tastier.

Yelp
SO happy I got to check this spot out. I've been a huge fan of Tate's cookies probably, ever since they came out in stores in South FL. I pick them up almost every time I go grocery shopping (it's one of my guilty pleasures lol.) I visited the Hamptons over the holidays and made it a must to check out their bake shop, which was so cute! The spot is so warm and cozy. Feels like a mom and pops store and was decorated so nicely for the holidays. Upon arrival we were greeted and decided to grab a few Tate's cookies, their crumb cake and a chocolate mousse cake. The cookies were obviously great but my favorite thing was their coffee cake. I think it's one of the best I've had! I'm glad I was able to grab a few pieces to-go (seems like they run out quickly) and had them with a cup of joe in the AM over the weekend. So fresh and not overly sweet, just how I like it. Love seeing spots like this flourish!

Yelp
Never heard of Tate's until this came up as a POI to visit! The bakery is quaint and charming. The inside has no seating, but a plethora of the famous Tate cookie bags. Many flavors and choices! The bakery has a lot of standard baked goods. I tried the coffee cake muffin, which was a nice snack. The outside is very nice with flowers (when blooming), several outdoor tables and embodies what everyone thinks of when you go to the Hamptons. There is a dedicated parking lot for visitors so no need to stress. The only thing I didn't see at Tate's bakery was prices. None of the merchandise has prices on it (including the famous green cookie bags) and none of the baked goods menu above the register had any pricing. It was slightly annoying to figure out what to order within our budget.

Yelp
Visit Date: November 11, 2022 I took my son here on Veteran's day. He was off school, I was off work and his dad was okay with me picking him up early. We stopped at three different places in the Hamptons that day. I need to be way more careful with my money so we just picked up two cookie packs and I got a coffee. There is so much here, so many baked goods, so many coffee choices. It was nice to see the original tate's bake shop. If you can make the visit here it's worth it.

Yelp
The rustic bread is so delicious! I could not stop eating it and now I can't stop thinking about it!!!! And yes, everything else is tasty and worthy too!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I've always been a fan of Tate's cookies and often buy it in NYC so I was very excited when I walked by the bake shop. I came around 12 on a Sunday and there was already a good amount of people waiting to order. My friend and I got a key lime bar and lemonade to share. The bar was absolutely delicious. The key lime bar was the perfect combination of sweet and tart and the shortbread crust was delicious and fragrant. The lemonade was fresh and they have syrup on the side so you can add as much or as little syrup as you want. Definitely a nice stop if you're in the area.

Yelp
My sausages love coming here whenever we're at our place in the Hamptons. Yes, Tate's cookies are available in ever freaking store you can think of in the tri-state area but the store itself has a ton of fresh made baked goods as well that are not packaged and readily available elsewhere. Their cappuccino making skills are on point and my kids enjoy their fresh squeezed lemonade, fyi there is no sugar in it. Staff is always friendly and being able to sit outside and enjoy our treats is a huge bonus plus it's dog friendly out on their patio sitting area too!
google avatar

Skye B.

Yelp
A huge selection of baked goods and coffees that is delicious. No prices posted anywhere so be prepared it will cost more than usually paying for a bag of their cookies.
google avatar

Teresa L.

Yelp
I was really excited to visit Tates since I love their cookies but was slightly disappointed to see the same flavors they sell in stores. They do have a selection of baked goods but I thought I could maybe scoop some fresh baked cookies. Their latte was solid and quite a large cup, and their ice cream sandwich made from their cookies was good too but didn't blow me away. All in all an average experiencing; I feel like there's a lot of potential here!
google avatar

Yelp
Golden Fudge Cake - EXCELLENT! Sour Cream Coffee Cake- EXCELLENT! Coconut Macaroons- EXCELLENT! Lemon Cookies- EXCELLENT! Everything I inquired about, I was told was good. And guess what, everything I tried was good! That never happens! Cakes were moist, coffee cake loaded with nuts. Lemon cookies have such amazing texture, thin & buttery crisp. Wish I had tried & bought more. Not to be missed!

Yelp
I was so glad I finally got to check this place out as I only always drove by to work. On my day off, I decided to go to this place after lunch on a chilly day. They had "BeeHealthy matcha latte" which is a matcha latte with honey and bee's wax sprinkles on top. I added more honey to make it more sweet but I really LOVED this matcha latte. It was very thick with lots of matcha in it and it is rare to find one like that. However, the cupcakes were not that good.. The frosting was too sweet to my taste but it could just be me haha This Southampton location is cute because they have their own cookies with Southampton sign on it :)

Suzanne H.

Yelp
It is a must when we get out there! I crave their chocolate croissants and raisin biscuits, both are just delicious!! Thank god I'm in Hampton Bays, because I would be there every day!!! This little gem is just the best and so thankful we are able to enjoy it! Keep up the amazing job guys! You are all wonderful!

A N.

Yelp
Bought their cookies at the grocer ... wasn't satisfied with the taste. Completed a comment form at their website. Received no reply. Found an email address. Followed up. Response was finally received ... no offer to compensate us in anyway for a $12. purchase. Bottom line - their customer service sucks. You're better off buying Pepperidge Farm cookies (less expensive, too).
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
This is a little storefront that still doesn't feel as corporate as their namesake in the heart of Southampton. Outside of their infamous cookies, there's at least several other varieties which you can't find at larger markets, the French macarons were a particular favorite of mine. I noddingly approved as I dipped my coffee flavored macaron into my Tate's cappuccino, sprinkled with a little fresh cinnamon from their self serve bar. There's some parking in the front, but it can be tight during peak season. There's plenty of parking in the back too.
google avatar

Kerri B.

Yelp
This is now one of our favorite bakeries to go to, I mean, we DO drive an hour to get here on the weekend! Staff is so friendly and helpful, the cupcakes are moist(am I allowed to say that? ) and packed with flavor, some are filled as well...did you see that reel yet? Check out Long_Island_Foodtastic on Instagram! Go look for it in our feed There is so much more here: cookies, pies, ice cream, lattes , and more! There's also outdoor seating if you are too tempted to eat your goodies before you get home.
google avatar

Shamila P.

Yelp
Birthday cakes spot! Was pretty crowded. Parking could be a little crazy here. They added lots of photo/ touristy stuff this year Also had their own ice cream sandwiches too Our cake was food what we wanted and yummy Also got cupcakes because we needed to wait to eat the cake lol
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
Cookies are great as always and they have all their varieties. Fun stop of in the area to hang and have a coffee.

Yelp
I've always loved Tates and their products. I dropped by yesterday to buy dessert bars. I was shocked how tiny they are now! Shrinkflation has hit tates!!their pecan bar is tiny!! Products still really good. Their help could be friendlier.
google avatar

Gail B.

Yelp
This is the only place I know of that sells intensely-flavored hazelnut decaf beans that you can buy in person. It is my favorite flavor, so I come here once a month to buy the 12 oz. bag. Their lemon loaf cake is popular at office parties where I work. All is gone an hour after I put it out. The cupcakes are delicious. The Golden Fudge is my favorite because it is made with thick semi-sweet cocoa. The strawberry pound cake is flooded with fresh strawberries. The blueberry tastes just as good. There are outside tables for customers to eat and drink. It is a good place to people watch. I feel so relaxed here. The place is clean, indoors and out--. The parking lot is even immaculate. Staff do their jobs with smiling faces. Most customers are friendly and down-to-earth. This is a fine neighborhood bakery. I highly recommend Tate's.

Amp P.

Yelp
Horrible customer service!!! Went in the Saturday before Easter. Waited in line for 20 minutes and about to approach the register for a pick up of a pre paid order. A large size woman came out and yelled anyone with a pre paid order can come over to the coffee counter for pick up. I was given my order (4boxes totaling over $150). I then asked for a bag unable to carry these 4 boxes by myself. Indeed stead of offering me a bag she advised me to get back in my original line and pay for one! I told her I just came off that line. She said that's the rules. Not even offering to get someone to help me to my car. She told me to take 2 trips. Rude, horribly rude!!! I will never go back.
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
I was super excited to check this place out on my visit in the Hampton's. There actually weren't any fresh Tate's cookies but it is alright. I tried the coffee crumb cake since that was their most popular item and a chocolate and cinnamon cigar. All were really sweet and tasty. The inside is filled with various pre-packaged items and the back is filled with their fresh pastries and any drinks you may want. The place is cute and love the truck prop outside. I would def recommend for you to check this out for a yummy dessert.

Yelp
A classic Southampton staple thin, buttery + delicious We love tate's the classic chic Chip is a fav of
google avatar

Yelp
We enjoyed the ice cream sandwich, baguette and dog friendly patio. A bit disappointed with the croissant and surprised to find that they only sell bagged cookies (same as the grocery store) but not fresh cookies. Oh well...

Yelp
Tate's!!! A quick turn north off Montauk Highway up north of the village. Can't head back with Levain in tow and not bring back the flat salty thin chocolate chip walnut cookies of Tate's. Long Islands iconic cookie. The most locally known chocolate chip has hailed from right here in Southampton Long Island. Wanted to see the clear wrapped packages that made them appear to be baked here on premises but now they're in green bags just like at the stores... so it's not quiiiiiite the same. Lol. Nice looking cinnamon pecan coffee cake cleanly wrapped. Possibly made earlier this week. Not leaving that behind. No delectable left behind? Whatever. My mother will love it. Heading back with bits and pieces of the wild and free carefree Hamptons. Ever vigilant the manager mans the only door and makes sure not more than three customers come in at a time. Thank you!!! Arms filled with green bags of cookies and a coffee cake. Tossed in the back for a kindly reminder of out here. Heading back to the real world and it's not better yet. Might not be 2020 but it's just not right yet. We've been hit hard because of this creepy virus and nobody can be seen smiling anymore. What's that worth?? But hey. Cookies are being baked and they're d*** good. Keeping the faith with good cookies. Cheers

Yelp
We had a great time visiting Tate's! We had amazing cappuccinos and bought a bunch of cookies to bring home

Yelp
I gave three stars, not because of the quality, but because of customer service. I'm sorry, but when I'm spending hundreds of dollars on cakes, I expect a bag. And when you charge, no matter how much, that's the very definition of nickel and dime. It's beneath the quality of the food. And shows poor management and customer service.

Sandy L.

Yelp
This is a famous bakery. Good coffee choices. Line moves quickly. But our group thought it was strange that they don't serve single cookies. You have to buy them in packs. The coffee cakes looked amazing. If I lived in the area, I may visit more. But we were from out of town, and it was a nice place to stop in.

Pat D.

Yelp
I love cookies the tiny Tate cookies are some of the worst cookies I've ever had they taste like they were the straps on the floor and were put in a bag the larger cookies taste like they were made in a glue factory now I know why they are on sale out here for so long cause no one is buying rotten cookies don't waste your money just like most food that's terrible it'll disappear soon

Yelp
RUDE! This review is strictly on their service. We went on a Tuesday, 7/7 around 12:30pm. My family was the only people there. Then 2 other girls walked in after us. Then one of the 3 girls behind the counter shouted at us saying only one person from each party can stay, which is fine since it's their covid policy. However, they allowed the other 2 girls to stay even though they had more than one person from their party. I understand if they have a line outside the door or if the store is crowded to enforce this, but there wasn't anyone else besides us. It was very inconvenient for us since we had a toddler and an infant with us. My husband had to put our infant back in the car first while I browsed to see what we wanted. Then I had to go back to the car and watch the kids for him to go back in to see what he wanted. If they just let us decide then and there, we didn't have to run back and forth. It's not like we would spend the whole day in there. We wanted to get in and out as well. I understand there are rules but sometimes they need to have business sense and be flexible given the situation.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of Tate's cookies and was so excited to stop by their bakery! The bake shop not only sells their iconic crispy thin cookies, but they also offer cakes, pies, breads, ice cream sandwiches, coffee and other hot drinks. I've tried their carrot cake for a friend's birthday and it was fantastic - in fact, there wasn't a crumb left by the end of it! Definitely a crowdpleaser. Tate's sold the cakes at 7 inch for $40 (serves 10 to 12) or 8 inch for $65 (serves 14 to 20). I've also tried their White Chocolate Macadamia cookies and their "New" Butter Crunch cookies, which tasted like a salted caramel/toffee flavor. Both cookies were buttery and sweet, a nice treat to have with coffee or tea or to just eat on its own. The cookie packages all sold for $5.25. Sadly there weren't any fresh cookies that were being sold here (all the cookies were pre-packaged), but there was still a decent variety to choose from, including some special seasonal flavors. I wouldn't drive far out of my way to come here, but I'd definitely stop by again if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Kaleigh M.

Yelp
Love that Tate's has a flagship store. Their bakery is always 10/10. Unfortunately the only thing that is lacking is their poor customer service. We were aggressively yelled to let us know they close in 5 minutes. Not sure if this is a ritual that they do every day but there is a way to let customers know they are closing without being mean and rude and yelling. These employees need a retraining on how to talk to people. So disgusted with these workers and not about their negative vibe. Really turned our experience into a negative one.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
I actually got some of their White Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies sold in the stores and WOW! They taste like came from the oven. Those cookies are so delicious. This top all those other White Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies I've had in the past. I also hear these cookies are Devine when you're on cloud 9. I live in California but I need to stop by for other goodies.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Very good bakery. All home made and scrummy! A bit pricey but quality of the experience makes it worth it.
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
The cookies are really fresh and thins. Oatmeal raisin doesn't have chewiness of the oatmeal, it's very crispy. Whole wheat chocolate chip cookies taste like regular chocolate chip cookies. Health cookies are aren't sweet, I think it's the healthiest option in the store. The baguette is fresh, highly recommended. Apple turnover is fresh and flaky with sweet apple fillings. Almond croissant is ok, not too much filling. It's a soft croissant. Macarons are pretty good.
google avatar

Christian B.

Yelp
Tate's stands alone in the Hampton's as the best bakery around. The shop is always stocked and the perfect size for a quick pop in. I'm a sucker for macarons and Tate's has a great selection of flavors and always fresh. Their cakes are great and never disappoint. Along with pre-made brownies and other treats, you can grab a pack of their world famous cookies which deserve a place on the Mt. Rushmore of cookies. This is a must-go for all folks in the Hamptons.
