"Tasting whiskey usually isn’t cheap, but thankfully there’s Whiskey Wednesday at Tate’s. This Uptown tavern runs a weekly special on their whiskey menu with half off almost every spirit. Enjoy it neat, on the rocks or old fashioned—just keep in mind that Thursday morning is right around the corner." - Allison Castloo

Had family visiting from Cleveland,OH and we had a blast. Great customer service drinks were amazing and the hookah was worth the price also the music was fantastic. Wonderful memories.

11/8/2020 was my first time visiting Tates and i absolutely LOVED it! It has a grown and chill vibe. They played a variety of music. I liked how they play a lot of that old school rap/R&B. We also met the owner and he was so cool and down to earth! A big plus was the restrooms were nice and clean! Pictured are paleta shots, blackbird and titos and sprite. 100 recommend will def be back!!

Christine Foster

Google
It is by no means worth a cover charge. The entire place is about the size of an extra large living room & then music is okay but, $60 for 1 hookah 😂 y’all wild lol

Chassity Lee

Google
I went and it was chill and the DJ was vibing!!!! They have a taco stand grill on the patio and those tacos are the best!!!!! Fresh and there is a 14 year old that works there with his family and he is so sweet and respectful!

J Bivins

Google
I was really surprised and never thought that this place would be so Peaceful and Relaxing, On a Friday night. And the tacos was number one. You can't get this nowhere but! TATE'S

Google
The vibe was GREAT!! The drinks was good and my blue cheese burger was EVERYTHING!!!

I hate Tate’s. The only weekend spot for Black people Uptown (aside from LEVEL which is only open 3 days a week), and Tate’s chooses to charge people $10 to get in. LITERALLY NOBODY UPTOWN CHARGES TO GET IN. Then they charge $13 (Receipt said $12 + .99 tax) for a Long Island which is even more expensive than Clutch!! And they serve that expensive drink in a small PLASTIC CUP. Not even a glass like everywhere else! And they use pre-mix for the drink like Applebee’s. My $13 Long Island should not taste LITERALLY EXACTLY the same as my $4 Long Island at Applebee’s! I promise I am not overly picky but this place is highly disrespectful to Black people. I’m looking across at the Trophy Room which is 5 times as packed as Tate’s, who doesn’t charge for entry, serve patrons in glassware, cheaper drinks, and makes those drinks with real alcohol, not pre-mix. It’s just embarrassing we get done like this and allow it. I’m a fairly well off Black dude living uptown. I rely on spots like this that plays music I like for a good time. Instead I have to get treated like a 2nd class resident Uptown because they know primarily Black people go to Tate’s. I’m definitely telling everyone not to come here. ******** Last minute edit: I’ve honest to God watched them turn away over 30 people in the past 40 minutes including a bridal party of 21 people (I counted) because they would not pay the $10 cover. The owners really need to re-evaluate their business model.

Google
$10 charge to get in. The bartender charged me $70 for 2 drinks. (Two) They try to take advantage thinking you're too drunk to notice. The music was good, the crowd was good but I don't think I Will be coming back.

Yelp
Tates is definitely one of my favorite bars to go to whenever I visit Dallas Texas my friends make sure to always bring me here just to have shots and the perfect pregame spot to stop by before heading out to any other bars or spots in general and the bartenders are also cool and friendly and definitely understand how to make drinks properly and keep the vibes going definitely something that is missing in Miami bars real authentic bartenders who's not just so money hungry but genuinely want people to have a good time and enjoy delicious cocktails and etc keep it up and also even the security out front is amazing and the ladies that sells the tacos outside omg the freaking best

Mark B.

Yelp
We only come for Jenny! Every time we come she knows who we are and takes care of us. Ask for jenny everyone and you will have great service and cocktails. Tates is the place but Jenny makes it the best...

Arianna C.

Yelp
Had a greaaat and fun experience love the music ! And drink were amazing !!! And the waiters were very friendly !

Katrina H.

Yelp
Have a bar outside and bring back the music outside . The drinks was great but you had to go inside to get one. The hookah was expensive they raised the price but it was still good!

Earl A.

Yelp
I happen to be in Dallas visiting relatives and had a little free time so I drove down to check them out. Parking is scarce but their is valet behind the restaurant. The music was bumping and the drinks were strong. There is an elevated outside patio with a view of the passing cars and sidewalks. Hookah is available if you are interested. It was real crowded but it was still daylight lol. I didn't stay too long as I had somewhere else to be, but it is somewhere I will visit again when in town.

Beryl D.

Yelp
Cool little spot in uptown. The staff was very nice. We got the blueberry julep... absolutely delicious! Perfect drink if you're hungry too.. comes stacked with berries!

Dominique J.

Yelp
Great vibes and great hookah. The dj was playing great hip hop hits. Small dance space though

Jeanette D.

Yelp
Tate's is a great place for weekend day parties. They have great drinks. One of my favorites is the Blueberry Julep. This drink is tasty, strong on the liquor, and is full of berries. Tate's is also a cool place to chill any night. You can sit outside on their patio and people watch. If you haven't been to Tate's go at least for the specialty drinks.

Derrick T.

Yelp
Didn't grab any pics but it was something to do when we left catbird last night! It was 10 to get in and 50 for the hookah! ‍ doorman was cool, the ppl we was with was lit so we had a good time.... Even saw a girl fight looking over the patio. I would fall back in there

Kayla S.

Yelp
Great drinks! Especially the sour cherry I can't remember the exact name and every Tuesday they have chef taste buds come out love their birria tacos

Ayanna M.

Yelp
This is a pretty good place to chill on a Thursday night. It's a mixed crowd-- young and older, black, Hispanic and White-- and the $3 tacos are totally worth it. I suggest the front porch on draft if you're a vodka drinker and the whiskey smash if you like it brown. The music doesn't start until 8:30, but when it does... it gets nice and exciting. This is a mellow crowd with hip hop music.

Max V.

Yelp
This is the place to be in uptown! This isn't like the other bars in uptown who don't let you in for dumb reasons! Everyone is welcomed here! No dress code! The whole staff is great, really good drinks and prices! Hookah available...

Yasmin E.

Yelp
Love everything about this place and wouldn't trade it for anything else.. customer service is the best and their drinks are the best bartenders like Enrique and Rico are the best specially coming alone they will take care of your and your needs.. come by enjoy great music with great food and lovely drinks... please be sure to order the specialty drink Bill Cosby

Dalilah G.

Yelp
Definitely the place to be! The vibe is great and the food is amazing! Definitely recommend and will be going back soon.

Yelp
Tate's is annoying. It's one of the only bars in Uptown that has a cover charge if you don't register online in advance. I can MAYBE understand a cover charge at night when the bar is packed, but not really because nome of the other popular uptown bars charge folks to get in whether it's the middle of the day or a busy night. Tate's has a cover charge even during the middle of the day when the bar is empty. Just seems like greedy management...or even worse, racism. Tate's is one of the only bars in uptown that plays hip hop and r&b, and also the only one that charges to get in. That's not a coincidence, guys. There will literally be no one inside and they'll turn down every single person trying to get in because nobody wants to pay which doesn't make much sense. The music is good, but there are other bars in Uptown to try where you can spend your money on the drinks (or simply not be forced to spend any money at all!) and not just to get in and stand around with a total of 7 people inside.

Yelp
Going to make this short and simple. Giving all 5 stars because Ryan Sanders is an awesome ass bartender. Whatever you like, he can whip something up for you. We sat there and enjoyed a couple of signature cocktails & it did not disappoint. Ryan made an mean old fashioned which my date who was accompanying me loved. I also tried the fruity drink with all the berries in it (forgot the name, hard to miss on the menu though), he said it was really popular, and I can tell why. Strong yet delicious! And usually I don't drink those frilly girly drinks. I also am VERY picky about bloody Mary's.. But he made the perfect one. As good as mines (Hehe) Overall, being there on a weeknight was awesome. The vibe was really chill, and it was lovely to sit there and just enjoy our drinks. So whatever your heart and (liver) desires - tell Ryan :p

Yelp
I've been here a few times and each time my experience has been different from the last. On Friday and Saturday nights I typically feel claustrophobic because it is so packed. But despite that the music is good and the drinks are strong. I've never had a bad experience here just some occasions more enjoyable than others based on the crowd and the night. The food service is great from what I have been told so I'll look forward to checking that out on my next trip. My biggest complaint isn't even a complaint of just this location but much of uptown, parking is terrible!! It is almost easier to uber here when wearing heels instead of having to walk the uneven sidewalks especially if alone or in a small group of just girls.

Jess O.

Yelp
The drinks here are so yummy!! I've been coming to this spot for years and I highly recommend if you're looking to do something casual!

Jennie J.

Yelp
Tate's is a fun place to hang out! Located on McKinney Ave in Uptown, it is in the heart of the bars and restaurants in the area. The bar is a a great place to sit. People are coming and going all the time and all of the bar tenders are very friendly and make great drinks! Be sure to try their Blackberry Julep! it's half price on ladies' night (every Thursday!). There's also a nice large patio on the front of Tate's overlooking McKinney. It's a great place to hang out when the weather is nice!

elle v.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Dallas. It's chill. Good drinks specials, great bartenders, good bar food and the best part is music. Hip hop and r&b mainly. I don't usually write reviews but this is my 5th time here and I always think it deserves way more than 3 1/2 stars

James G.

Yelp
The only bar in Uptown whose shots come from a gun instead of bottle. Routine shootings every other week. I wouldn't come to this "bar" without a teflon vest.

Orze K.

Yelp
I have family in Dallas, so I'll be making the drive from Houston to Dallas on a regular basis, and one of my closest cousins lives in Uptown Dallas, so we went out with them. This place was cool earlier in the evening, no cover, and nice outdoor seating (weather was great in Dallas). But after a while, they started charging cover, uniformed officers, and the most overpriced hookahs at $40 for one tube. Ambiance is cool, but didn't like the shift it made mid evening

Kim H.

Yelp
I had a hard time choosing a 2 or 3 star review-- this is a 2.5 star place. Prior to coming here we emailed the business for information, but we never heard back from them. Not a positive sign, but we decided to give this place a shot anyway. The selling point for me was the awesome bourbon list online; however, upon arrival we were informed that the advertised list online was old and a poor reflection of what they offered at Tate's. Somewhat a bummer, but it wasn't going to ruin my birthday celebration night. So what to try that I don't already have at home and wasn't crazy expensive. Afterall, last night was Whiskey Wednesday at Tate's so I'm thinking more for my money. I ended up settling on Woodford Reserve Double Oaked since the advertised online Elmer T. Lee was not available here. So then it was time to eat, Tate's is advertised as food and small plates and has a food menu online, we grabbed a menu and after the 9/10 of us were all looking and deciding-- we were told, "We don't serve food here anymore, but you are more than welcome to bring food in here from any of the restaurants around." Cool, and thank you. Slightly puzzled as to why the menus are in the bar (and online) if they don't serve food and we were already told the bourbon menu is way out of date. We all had one drink and left to go just down the street. Any other night other than a special occasion we all would have been perfectly okay with grabbing food to bring it in, but not last night. I am not sure if I will revisit Tate's. There were many "misses" along the way for me to jump at the opportunity of coming back.

Chelsea R.

Yelp
The happening place to be if you're ever cruising around Uptown on a Friday night! Dark and loud yet intimate with a cool patio and misting fans. Have the bartenders whip you up a sriracha cocktail with fresh cucumbers. Really this place is in the heart of the action with the Den across the street blasting loud top 40 hits and SMU kids ripping the streets. Which...meh...kind of makes me feel old but ah well. I guess you're as young as you feel, right? Anyway if you're down for people watching and a little crazy fun this is the prime people watching location.

Nicole L.

Yelp
Went there last night for a ladies night out. It turned out very laid back, chill and very accommodating to our large crowd.

Al T.

Yelp
Came here last Monday night to have drinks with some friends. Perfect night to hangout on the patio. Since this was an off night, there were plenty of seating and not too loud, so it gave us a chance to chat and enjoy the night. If you guys like craft cocktails this is the best place to go. Chris, their very lovely bartender, is amazing when it comes to crafting tasty cocktails. After talking with her for a bit, I told her I loved Hendrix gin. She pretty much pegged my palate and made me a cocktail with muddled cucumbers that really accentuated the flowery after note of Hendricks gin, with just a touch of citrus taste to it. Absolutely perfect for a cool breezy Monday night, seating on the patio, people watching and hanging out with good friends. I hear they have DJ's on weekends. Will have to check that out. Better yet, I shot an email to see if I can DJ there. So hopefully I get a response back. LOL Nevertheless, I will be coming back soon. SIFC

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bars in Dallas. I love that its risen a bit above the sidewalk so you're able to see a little better at the people walking down the street. Its a prime people watching location around midnight when all the drunks come out to stumble across McKinney Ave! The outside patio isn't huge but its a good size and very open yet with a cozy feel. In the winter they put out blankets on each chair for you to wrap up in under their heat lamps! The Eternal Flame is my absolute favorite drink here. It consists of tequila, strawberry, jalapeno, lime and ginger beer. Its a sweet and spicy mix all in one. In the winter their Hot Toddy is definitely a must! The bartenders here are great. Very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions you have about the menu. Its clear they love what they do. The bathrooms only have 2/3 stalls so there tends to be a small line sometimes. But considering the place is small in size and they do have a door guy monitoring the amount of people, the wait is never too long. Plus they keep the bathrooms VERY clean. The only downside is parking. They don't exactly have their own parking lot so you must resort to street parking or taking your chances in a garage. I personally just Uber it. I love there drinks long enough to sit and have more than one! This is definitely a great place to stop in and have a drink!

Lily M.

Yelp
Tate's has a fun drink menu! I came here the other night and ordered the Tate's Gimlet, and it tasted so refreshing. The bartender made this drink wonderfully and put so much effort and intensity into the whole process of creating the cucumber concoction. I would definitely come back again to try other drinks on the menu while relaxing with good company.

Allison L.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Tate's! Yay for new spots in my bar rotations! :) We only went for cocktails as we had dinner reservations later that night, but we were all very impressed! The drink menu is sectioned off into different liquors....gin, rum, tequila, vodka and then what type of mood your in. I loved this. Because for me, I went right to the vodka. Obvy. I started with the SJP (basically a Cosmo) and it was delciious, then I had the Blackbird Julep which was incredible, almost a small snack if you will - fresh berries, so refreshing!! MP got the lemonade which he said went down like water! Then my friends got Cuba Libre and their version of Pimms. Cocktail Saturday!! The ambiance of the place is comfy and sitting outside in the heat was not a problem with the abundance of mister fans! Our waitress was lovely and the fact that our drinks tended to take a little longer than expected, was actually ok with us. She was super apologetic and I think she was the only one on the patio...hey Tates, hire more peeps! She also told us that all the drinks we had, are half off on Wed! Um, yes please. One other downside is that there is no designated area for smokers so they just kind of congregate outside the front. Le sad. Will definitely be back, we enjoyed our impromptu stop at Tate's! Oh and the bathroom is freeeeeezing! Gah! *shivers*

Reba G.

Yelp
Cute little bar located in the heart of uptown Dallas, I needed to venture outside of my 5 mile bubble, so I found this bar. If you are hungry, I highly recommend the spinach artichoke dip, it is AMAZING!!! The staff is friendly, the owner walked around and greeted the customers and talked about his restaurant to us. The patio is HUGE, and it's a perfect patio for happy hour spot. The bartenders were awesome and quick to service. I will definitely come back. They also provide $5 valet parking, parking in uptown can be iffy at times.

Zachary B.

Yelp
I had an awesome time here! The music was great, and me and my friends were able to dance and hang with the crowd. The interior is very small, however it's not too bad. I will say, I won't come here on a Friday or Saturday due to the $10.00 cover charge...no thank you. Definitely losing a star for that. The employees were slightly unprofessional, running around giggling with each other instead of helping customers. I understand having fun, but most places in the area have such a high importance on a great customer service experience.

Sayem C.

Yelp
Vividly remember this location. Walking around the McKinney strip on a cold December night and about to head to my hotel until I stop in my tracks from the tunes of Notorious by B.I.G. This was the only place I actually heard music playing from the outside and to make matters even better, it's hip hop and r&b which of course drew me closer. As i walked in, got up to the bar and was immediately welcomed by the bartenders there. Ordered a Blackberry Julep and enjoyed the Falcons vs. Saints game for most of the night. Drinks were great, DJ was on point and service was even better. I'm not a local, so I got plenty of tips on where to find the best tacos from the bartenders. If I come back to Dallas, Tates is no doubt a must.

John S.

Yelp
It's a nice ambiance, sure, but the drinks themselves are pretty mediocre and definitely overpriced. And for some reason, this place never became popular despite its prime location, so it's not even a great place to meet people. And yet still, loud music is blasted, so you don't be able to chat with friends without yelling.

Tyrone P.

Yelp
I had such a fun time here. The hookah lasted us all night. The drinks were strong and our bartender was nice. The music was great. A mix of hip hop and reggaeton. I enjoyed my time dancing here.

Icebergg V.

Yelp
Dope layed back spot... Good DJ on Tuesday!!! Tacos are on point #vip

Derek S.

Yelp
This place is infested with a not so great clientele. Would be nice to see them close. It's too small and not set up appropriately. It's helping to ruin uptown.

Jenna L.

Yelp
What a fun place for happy hour! Good sized patio and fun atmosphere. The blackbird julep is their specialty, and most people order it. It's a semi-sweet drink, and they put a lot of fresh fruit on top. Very good! It does not taste like a mint julep, it's fruity. They also have two Cabernet options, the cheaper one ($8 a glass) is actually very good! It's dry and has a medium tannin taste. For snacks, the hummus and nachos are fabulous! Beware of the edamame- they put some kind of strong seasoning on it that's almost unbearable to eat. If you order it, just ask them to salt it, nothing else! Valet is also $5, but you can try street parking if you go early enough.

Natalie B.

Yelp
Enrique was amazing, great cocktails and great service. Definitely coming back for him

Shalise G.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times, it's a good time especially when you're intoxicated. It's one of the few places in the area that actually plays hiphop/rap/r&b the entire night. Last time I went I didn't have to pay a cover charge and it was either a Friday or Saturday, way after 11pm. However, good luck finding a park. We had to park 3 streets over since we got such a late start. I'll be back.

Cassandra G.

Yelp
This was my first time here. I came here for a Day Party on a Saturday afternoon. The food and drinks was very good. I got the shrimp tacos and the Blackberry Julep. The food was reasonable but the drinks were kind of pricey. Our waitress was very attentive and nice. She came by often checking to make sure our party of 10 was ok. Definitely will be planning another trip back here.

Ed D.

Yelp
This place has gone done hill!!! Bar service is poor. An drinks are way over priced. And a cover charge during the day. They have lost their minds!!!

Keith W.

Yelp
Since when do bars charge you to get in at 5pm. You must be willing to pay to go to a bar to get in here. There drinks were good though but you get no star for that because I paid a drink just to drink, shame Tate's.

James V.

Yelp
A phenomenal bar! Tate's has great seating with a relaxed environment (at 10 pm) and a great selection of drinks. TVs are there too so you can enjoy your drink while watching some NBA. Have their Old Fashion--it is delicious and is one of the best I have ever had. I expect to go back to this place alot and make it one of my regular spots for Uptown. ~Carpe Diem~

Chiara S.

Yelp
This place is whack, don't come and don't do any promoter tables or anything. Not worth it. Poor customer service. Terrible experience

Megan N.

Yelp
My husband and I went on a mid-week date night to check out their "Whiskey Wednesday" specials. I am not a whiskey drinker at all, so I asked the bartender for a recommendation. This was after we asked him if we could order (not the other way around). He rattled off something and I heard "old fashioned" so I opted for that. He asked if I had a preference of whiskey....um....I just told you "I am not a whiskey drinker" and asked what you recommend. He wasn't interested in helping me so he said "Would you like to start with the house whiskey?". Sure. When I heard his pitch again to someone standing next to us I realized he was saying "water, neat, rocks, or old fashioned" were all part of the specials. We asked if we could order food (again, not the other way around even though we were sitting at the bar right in front of him and talking about food options) We ordered the brisket sandwich and the meat and cheese platter. I will admit the man who brought it to the table had likely been the one to put together these beautiful dishes and he delivered them to us with such pride. The food was great, the drinks were great (even though I feel like a better recommendation of a whiskey that wasn't the "house" whiskey would likely have greatly improved mine.) I just wish that people who work in the service industry would actually make some effort to deliver great service. This guy wasn't a young kid doing this just to get through school, and watching him work he actually took the time to ensure he was making great cocktails. He just lacked that delivery that could have made our experience that much better. We would probably return for the food and the cocktails, but we may just try to pick a seat near a different bartender.

Claire S.

Yelp
Weekends are super busy. Weekdays are chill. I like hanging out here since it is literally right in front of my place and I can visit after work. Cocktails are pretty stiff and very deli-sh, ambiance lacks, service is decent, bartenders are friendly. But that is not why I am raving about Tates at all. Bar is a bar. If you have not yet tried, please try Tate's Nachos. It is a piece of heaven. Very unique flavor unlike any other nachos I have ever had: a little sweet and a little salty. The chef lays out individual tortilla pieces carefully into layers and makes sure that each tortilla piece has enough ingredients on it. All their bar food was high end quality, not like pig food that other bars serve. Very classy display of food and unique flavors. I am completely irrevocably in love with Tate's Nachos.

Frances H.

Yelp
Tate's is an awesome new addition to not only the craft cocktail scene, but the Dallas nightlife scene as well. A clean but classy environment, Tate's creates classic cocktails and boasts a brewtiful beer roster, too! Matt and JW, the charming men behind the bar, are spectacular and make you feel at home or on the set of Cheers. Happy to serve up any elixir, they do it with perfection. Not to mention, JW wears a pretty snappy traditional bartender outfit: complete with a striped buttoned-up shirt and bow-tie. A few of my favorite drinks include The Spicy 75 and The Eternal Flame. I can't wait to return on one of these beautiful spring days and sit on their spacious patio while sipping the spicy and sweet Eternal Flame.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Not sure where the bad reviews are coming from, I had two great cocktails here, awesome bartenders and well crafted cocktails. Had a 'Last Word" made with scotch instead of gin (At the tenders suggestion) and a 'Jane Danger', tried several other of their cocktails that my friends ordered, and all of them were excellent. Complaining about parking on McKinney on a Friday night, or trying to get a drink in a busy bar? In other news, water is wet, math is boring and politicians are crooked.

Rosy H.

Yelp
It took FOREVER to get drinks, which was ridiculous. I don't understand the appeal of sitting/standing around and having to yell over loud music. Either have a dance floor and make it worth it, or tone it down so people can have conversations. I did like how oranges and cucumbers were within reach to snack on, but I'm pretty sure that was not their purpose.
