19 Impressive Whiskey Bars in NYC

"This elegant, dimly lit Tribeca cocktail bar from the team behind Times Square’s Rum House is all about its spirits, particular hard-to-find whiskey from around the world. But the rum, gin, tequila, and mezcal selections are equally worthwhile." - Paul Schrodt

Tavern On Reade is a wonderful spot that combines great food, warm service, and a relaxed neighborhood vibe. The menu offers delicious options made with care, and every dish feels fresh and flavorful. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual meal, drinks with friends, or a cozy evening out, the atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. It’s the kind of place that quickly becomes a favorite because of its consistent quality and charm.

Overall, we really liked it! The food was excellent, we had chicken wings as a starter — very tasty, juicy, and well prepared. The beer was also good, fresh and enjoyable. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is great.

Great service and beer tasted amazing. Sliders were also delicious

We went for lunch today and waited maybe 2 hours for food. Instead of blue cheese with my wings they gave me mayo. The happy hour deals for drinks are pretty good, but the food was overpriced and overall it wasn’t worth waiting two hours for. It is kind of insane that nothing was comped/no one tried to make it right. We were respectful and tipped well but I won’t be going back.

Ordered their burger, which came with fries for takeout. One of juiciest burgers I have eaten in a while and the fries by far the best I've had from a bar restaurant. Nice inviting atmosphere with exposed bricks on one of the walls. High ceilings and TVs everywhere.

We visited Tavern On Reade and thoroughly enjoyed it! The interior is cozy, the menu is diverse, and the food is fresh. The waiters are friendly and attentive, and the service is fast. It's a great place for dinner with friends or a quiet evening.

Me, my wife and daughter stopped her Easter Sunday after walking around the area. It wasn’t crowded as it must of just opened but our bartender who also acted as the server was incredible. Food was exactly what we wanted and hoped for. Great selection of beer. We sat and rested for over an hour just enjoying the peace and comfort. Our bartender came over to see if we were ok periodically but never pressured us at all - a great visit and definitely will visit again.

Yelp
Walked in Saturday 5/18 around 3:00 PM. Ordered (2) burgers medium rare served perfectly! Sweet potatoe fries were awesome. At the time we walked in there was no wait staff so we ordered at the Bar. Bar Tender did a superb job handling the bar patrons and taking care of patrons in the dining room. (Poured a tasty pint of Guinness!! As well) He also served as the Bus Boy, clearing tables!!! The padded bench along the wall was quite comfortable. Tables nicely arranged. Restrooms were clean!!!! Good crowd of Locals and Tourists all were welcomed. Great pub vibe

Yelp
A Thursday, 5pm, not too much availability to sit at the bar, happy hour is from 3-7 FYI (beers 5$ cocktails 6$ I believe ) - and several patrons were already tipsy and we chose seats at a high hat to avoid anyone involved in their own fun times. We ordered food and a few beers. Burger was good, we both enjoyed the fries (crispy and delicious) but the dining partner ordered a jerk chicken wrap that had no spice or flavor. I would go back, the bar food seems decent and the happy hour could be fun and affordable !

Yelp
Stopped by this bar/restaurant recently mostly because my husband and I wanted to try their macaroni and cheese. It's one of our favorite comfort foods and it did not disappoint! :D I also had the chicken tenders with honey mustard dipping sauce and an order of tater tots and they were delicious too! The only reason why I didn't give a 5-star rating is because there was only 1 person working for the tables and the bar the entire time we were there. I had to get up, walk to the bar and ask for a refill of our drinks. The service was friendly and I also really enjoyed the music because it was a little bit of everything. I will be back ... but next time, I think it will be to take advantage of their happy hour. ;)

Yelp
It was raining like crazy. We were in a need of a place to eat that had bathrooms. We were losing hope. Thankfully, Tiona came into our rescue and welcomed us with open arms. She was the sunshine to this gloomy rain and went above and beyond for us. It's not easy to be a server at a pub. We were so thankful that somebody as resilient and kind as Tiona was our server. She also happily served us hot water with lemon, and helped steady our table without us asking. Seriously, bless your heart! We love you. We also like to thank José, the chef. The fries are chef-kiss cooked to perfection. Crisp. Highly recommend the fries. We indulged-- and I got to say we especially enjoyed the onion soup. :) Hamburger is classic -- plus if you like chicken you can go for the chicken tenders or wrap. Do warn that blue cheese be strongggg, so if you like blue cheese like Thunder Jack, you are at the right place.

Yelp
Great neighborhood hangout in Tribeca. Love the staff and their martinis. Nothing else like it in the area.

Yelp
My wife and I came here recently. The bartender was also in charge of waiting on all the tables, therefore service was slow. We had to get up to look for him when we wanted refills of water. I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap which tasted awful and sour. However, the mac n cheese was really good and so were the chicken fingers. Drink prices are quite expensive, but I did see a sign that all draft beers are $5 during happy hour. I would probably return someday, especially for their mac n cheese.

Yelp
After a nearby bar closed, we searched for a new spot to call home. Tavern on Reade was a contender and we were excited to try it out. The menu offered great options, but burgers were the go-to for my party. I wanted the Beyond Burger, which they did not have so I settled for the turkey burger, which came with crispy fries. I would have loved more spices or heat with my burger to give it a little kick. It paired nicely with the High Noon Black Cherry Hard Seltzer. We sampled from each other's plates and then ordered our own plates lol. I loved the basket of golden tater tots. I heard rave reviews about the mac & cheese skillet and the crab cake sandwich. Those were the hits but there were some misses like the hot chicken & waffle, the chicken wings, and the apple crumble. The wings needed a little more time to crisp up and sometimes it is best not to deviate from the original fried chicken and waffle recipe. I love apple crumble, but I was puzzled. The crunch was there. However, the dessert was lukewarm, the apple slices were cold, and it was not served with ice cream. With a jukebox in the corner, we took turns as the DJ through a mobile app and had an impromptu karaoke session in our booth. We had fun. What more could you ask from a bar?

Yelp
If you hang around long enough you get to visit old places, new places and places that change names. I remember coming here when it was called "Spagetti Western" loved it then...love it now. This is the kind of pub that is really a treat. It's not a "dive bar", in fact it's quite nice and clean. Unfortunately I was there during happy hour, and popped in just around noon, to a light smattering of people. Bartender was very sweet and friendly, even when I start with my boring "I used to come in here years ago", talk. The space is a nice, classic wooden bar, with high booths in the main dining area. QR menu details even the daily specials. Most items are in the $14 to $16 range for lunch, which I find reasonable. The grilled chicken club sandwich I ordered was served on some fresh rye bread, lightly toasted w/ a side of fries. The chicken was fresh and plump and perfectly charred. I really enjoyed that sandwich. Also, while it's a small thing, I enjoy restaurants that offer some type of automated check out, like Square or Toast on a device. It just eases my day. Anyway...I'm going to come back to check same more of the items. I think there's real value here.

Yelp
Great place to watch any type of sports - football, soccer, baseball, basketball - on their 13 TV screens. Full bar and kitchen with daily specials.

Yelp
Pretty standard pub food options, nice staff. My chicken club fell apart because the bread was not grilled. It was fine but I would try something different next. They charge a credit card fee

Yelp
We met the bartender/owner Liam -- he's such a delight! The food was delicious, everyone was really kind, and the craft beer selection is AMAZING! Excited to come back for happy hour -- their deals sound really good. Found them through Seated, will definitely be back! PS - don't listen to bad reviews clearly all by one group.

Yelp
Good food, service, location and decent price. Good beer selection on tap, lots of tv's.

Yelp
My son and I stopped in for an early lunch and neither of us finished our meal. Or the appetizer. Overcooked, flavorless food. Service was okay, she was pretty distracted with other patrons (people she seemed to know) - she forgot my drink and got the wrong side for my son. Restaurant was clean, tables and chairs comfortable. I'd pass this place by.

Becky B.

Yelp
Apparently ice is at a premium at this establishment, if you order a drink on the rocks...but if you plan to charge for ice, they should at least upgrade from single ply toilet paper.

Aaron G.

Yelp
Ice. A staple of bars everywhere. Apparently here, though it's a magic commodity. Mind you, for a soft drink, it's free. In a whisky glass, however, it's a $4 charge. For just the ice. On top of already overpriced pours, it's just absurd.

Yelp
Outstanding restaurant Everyone is so accommodating and professional Diana and MJ etc are awesome The food and service are perfect Happy hour is definitely a happy hour after a long day at the office Our favorite go to place.

Yelp
This is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and was desperately needed. It is beautifully renovated with a lot of TVs and a huge list of draft beers. Happy Hour for $5 is really nice and the food is good too. We go for lunch several times a week and sometimes after work. Diane is a great server and we always look forward to seeing her.

Yelp
What my friends and I experienced last night was inexcusable. We were simply looking for a place to have a bite but seconds into walking in, a young man from a large group rudely made vulgar comments. My friends and I wanted to ignore this and made our way to the back, near where the workers were- want to also note that except for the group in the front, the place was nearly empty. However, the man followed us, charged to the back and nearly physically assaulted my friends and I, loudly making more obnoxious comments. His friends just laughed in the background. The workers didn't bat an eye or say anything even though it was happening right in front of them, and we'd never felt more hurt and uncared for. Our safety as a customer was completely disregarded.

Mallory W.

Yelp
Good drinks with friendly bartenders! The Tuna and beef were cooked to absolute perfection.

Jt M.

Yelp
Friendly bar staff and really solid draft beer menu. Got the crab cake sandwich and it exceeded expectations too - was terrific. Great spot to grab a barstool or booth

Kana P.

Yelp
We came in looking for a drink/food and there was only one small group inside, so it wasn't busy at all. But we were completely ignored even though we went right where the staff were standing by the counter. Shortly after we came in, someone from the other group came over to make vulgar comments and physically tried to come after my friend right in front of the staff, who just watched. We did not feel safe here and left right after. We would never come here again.

Kevin N.

Yelp
Terrible service, come here if you enjoy being ignored. There was a drunk person going around harrassing people and the staff just ignored it even when the customers were visibly uncomfortable. Their drinks were also watered down and unoriginal.

J J.

Yelp
I'm writing this review much later than when the incident occurred, but it still needs to be talked about. We walked into the restaurant looking for a place to grab a quick bite, but we were completely ignored. None of the workers greeted us and we just awkwardly stood there. What made it 100x worse is that we were a group of girls being harassed by one of the drunk customers and no one helped us. He made vulgar comments and even followed us to the back of the restaurant. We were terrified and left immediately after. Should you support an establishment where no one speaks up for the safety of others? No, you should not. Maybe we were treated differently because we are from a different demographic, but I'll never step foot in there again.
