Nice restaurant directly behind the Holiday Inn and Lucas Oil Stadium very short walk. Food: Buffalo Chicken Dip - really good, spicy, and cheesy! Good portion to share. Bourbon Maple Smoked Salmon - for the most part the dish was great. The bourbon sauce was really good also. I think they left the salmon on a little too long because some of it was tough and burnt. That is the reason for the 4 stars. Service: We had a 4pm reservation ehich is when they open. We had just made it in town from out of state so we were there like 10 mins early. The hostess saw us and let us in even though they weren't supposed to open for another 5 minutes which was nice of her. Another worker saw her seating us and made it known that it was still 3 minutes before they were technically open. Our server was nice though and made sure to check on us. Atmosphere: We sat on the outdoor patio on the 2nd floor. It was okay until we started randomly getting swarmed by yellow jackets (at least thats what they looked like). And all you could smell was someone smoking down stairs outside which was totally our fault for wanting to sit outside but it was nice out. I didnt get a good look at the indoor dining area on the 1st level plus it was empty since they had just opened.

The only thing good that I can say about this restaurant is the service. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and the best part of our experience. The food was overpriced over salty and incredibly small portions. The mixed drinks were watered down to where you might as well just drink a bottle of water. It would’ve been cheaper. My husband had a draft that he couldn’t even finish because it was so bad. He barely even touched it. Do not come here. Do not expect to eat a good meal.

Google
Food is great every time we eat here. This time I tried the steak tacos and they were bomb! But why fries for a side. Throw some chips and queso on there instead. Still delicious and would eat again.

More of a restaurant than a sports bar, they're more upscale but not expensive. There are several TVs around the restaurant and bar areas. We are here shortly after arriving at our hotel down the alley. While the bar was full, there was still plenty of seating in the dining areas. The hostess found us a spot where he could see the game(s) after several attempts. Didn't order any drinks even though they had some good specials going on. I ordered the cowboy burger and he got the Chicken sandwich. My burger was cooked to order, juicy and really good. It was big too, I couldn't finish it. I only wished they had candied the jalapenos instead of the bacon. He liked his chicken sandwich, no complaints whatsoever so A+ there. Our server was pleasant and attentive, even when it got busy as the night went on.

Google
I was in town for work at the Indy 500 so we expected a little wait no matter where we went. I think we waited about 15 minutes. Food was pretty good. I had a burger that was cooked perfectly. Our waitress did a great job as she was juggling many tables. Thank you, and we hope to visit again next year.

Google
My burger was fantastic, wife said her ribs were a bit dry but the flavor was on point. Service was great. All in all 7.5/10

Google
Everything here was excellent. Easy to get to, ample parking and the inside is well laid out. Good was very good and the best drinks I've had in a long time.

Google
Food was decent, but nothing extraordinary, server was nice. No kids menu. Disappointed that they wouldn't allow us to add cheese and bacon to the fries for an extra charge. They had bacon cheese fries on the menu, so it was an option, but couldn't add it on to fries you got with your entree. I thought that was weird. The sides available are extremely limited: cottage cheese, fries ( for a $2 up charge) coleslaw or chips. Probably won't be back , based on them not being willing to customization, even when we said we'd pay the extra.

Yelp
My wife has a gluten allergy, which makes eating at football stadiums challenging. So when we booked tickets for Billy Joel, she got to work finding a place with a GF or GS menu that was close to Lucas Oil Stadium. Tavern on South fit that need, and by far exceeded our expectations. When we arrived at 5pm, the place was slammed with a two hour wait. Luckily, we made a reservation, so we got a table right away. Despite the huge crowd, service was fantastic and our server was very attentive. The beer list had some good local options at reasonable prices. The wings were smoked very well and the lemon pepper was a nice flavor. The chicken tacos were nothing special, but it was substantial amount of food for the price and the chips were great. Despite the crowd, we were in and out in 75 minutes. We gave our server a good tip for being so responsive. Would I recommend this for a Thursday romantic date night? Probably not. But, for a spot with reasonably priced food and drinks before or after a game or concert at a stadium, I don't think you could do much better. The atmosphere was also very enjoyable. My wife said women were singing Billy Joel songs in the bathroom. For all these reasons, I think Tavern on South is 5 star worthy. If I ever go to a Colts game, this will be a must-stop.

Yelp
This was my first time here. We sat out on the upstairs patio. It was a really cool ambiance for our party of four. The appetizers were really delicious. We shared the smoked artichoke dip and a spicy pizza. They were both delicious. I actually liked them better than my main entree. I had the fish and chips. The fish was tasty, but the breading was a little more than I prefer. The waffle fries were tasty. The slaw was just ok. Our server was top notch. She was very friendly and kept us topped off on drinks. A+ to her.

Yelp
I've been to tavern on south a few times now and I have enjoyed it every time. We were seated pretty quickly even without a reservation. Recently when I went, I ordered the chicken sandwich which was pretty good. I tried the side of coleslaw which I didn't enjoy as much, but it might be a personal taste that I have for sweeter coleslaw. Overall, I have no real complaints and will probably be back.

Yelp
Went with a group from work. Our server was fantastic! She was very friendly and accommodating. I like the atmosphere and the restaurant vibe. I had the bison burger and fries. It was mediocre. The appetizers were great. We had smoked spinach dip, buffalo cauliflower and the loaded fries. I liked it enough and other meals were enjoyed so I'd return but wouldn't do the Bison.
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner and drinks here when I arrived in Indianapolis. There is free parking on the side of the building and the decor inside is quite nice. There is also a balcony on the second floor, but it was closed for the evening. Our server was Sean and he did an outstanding job! (The service from the kitchen was a little slow and that was surprising given there were not many people in the place at 8pm. We did the taco salad and the soft tacos. Sean recommended the seasoned pulled chicken over the seasoned chipotle chicken and he was spot on. It was very tasty! I had a cosmo, but I didn't order a second one. It was too sweet for my taste. I switched to a glass of Douglass Hill Cabernet Sauvignon for dinner and it was quite good. We had an enjoyable evening at Tavern on South.

Yelp
We decided to all go out for lunch to this location since it was quiet during the summer hours. We were seated quickly which was awesome because we had a decent sized group. The menu has a variety of choices which is always nice in my opinion. I decided to go with the 7 field salad, which was a great combo of spinach, goat cheese, cranberry, cherries, spiced nuts, with a raspberry vinaigrette and I added some grilled salmon on top for protein. It was a tasty refreshing, and the perfect amount for lunch. This is a place I would certainly come back to to check out more menu items

Yelp
We were in town for the Chiefs game. We stopped here the night before to have dinner. Sean was our server and he did a fabulous job. We had the smoked spinach artichoke dip and the chicken poppers for appetizers. My oldest son wanted a bison burger in place of the regular meat patty and my other sons fiancé wanted some fried Onion sprinkle things whatever those toppings are called as they had them on another menu item, put on her burger and neither request could be done for some reason. It was rather quiet that Saturday evening. Food was good. We went back on Sunday before the game and definitely a lot more lively crowd. They were limiting the people in the bar to just those who could sit? They said they didn't want it to get too crowded. We were able to order drinks and take them with us. Solid choice.

Yelp
Tried this place for a farewell lunch with colleagues! The food is excellent ! I ordered the Mahi Mahi Tacos with fries! I got three street style tacos. The fish was perfectly grilled. The tacos were quite filling. The portion size is good for one person. We ordered fried Buffalo cauliflower for the table ! It super crispy on the outside and tasted very good! Definitely recommend this as a appetizer. This place was 10 min away from my office so was a quick drive. The service was quick and efficient . There's a parking lot right outside the restaurant for customers. We went on a weekday around 11 AM so it wasn't very busy!.

Yelp
Just awful. Terrible food. Extremely salty. Service was slow, multiple orders were forgotten or missed. Noise level was adequate. So many other places to go. Don't go here

Yelp
Was in town for work, Ruby was our server. Absolutely a riot, friendly, and an amazing server!!

Yelp
I had dinner here recently and really enjoyed it. I was by myself so I had one of the smaller tables in the bar area. The two bartenders were very attentive and refilled my water often. I started with the 7 Field Salad: mixed greens, dried cherries, spiced nuts, carrot, red onion (I held this), goat cheese and cranberry vinaigrette. This was a really tasty salad. Loved all the toppings. Nice tart dressing. For my entrée, I had the Fish & chips: crispy fried whitefish, lime dill tarter sauce, french fries, cole slaw, grilled lemon. The fries was a bit too flaky but it was tasty. I liked the breading on it. The dill tarter sauce was delicious. I dipped my fish and fries in it. Good tasty cole slaw. All my favorite items. Overall a nice dinner. Looks like a fun place to watch a game or just have drinks and food. They seem to have some upstairs outside seating as well.
google avatar

Carolene M.

Yelp
Met some friends over lunch. All the seating was upstairs and was well spread out due to COVID. We sat on the porch which was comfortable with heaters. I got the Cobb salad, which I normally order here. Service is good. Parking is easy and free which is great for downtown.

Yelp
Food was great. We made reservations for a large group, and they were ready for us upon arrival. Location is great near campus. Service was quick. Parking was easy. Overall, great experience and will be back.

Yelp
Went in during a weekday lunch with a group of co-workers. Service was quick and they checked in frequently, it wasn't as busy but still had a decent lunch crowd. I got the beef tip burrito with fries and to my surprise it was really good! A solid lunch place that gets overlooked sometimes but a good place to go during the week day without much of a lunch rush crowd.

Yelp
First trip here was for burger week, but sadly we won't return. The biggest pro is that there is a small parking lot while dining. Once we placed our order, we were informed they were out of the liquor they were promoting, so ordered another. We still ordered the burger week burger, which then came out medium. We asked about the cooking temp, and were informed all burgers are made that way regardless of asking. We were not offered another burger or anything else, even though we did not eat the burger served. We paid our tab, after discussing that that our drinks were rang in at $2 higher each (we were told because we asked for it 'on the rocks' ) than menu price, and left with burger lying on the plate. Service was not attentive (would ask how we were, but no interest in our uneaten food even after asking about cooking temp). Do not recommend unless needing a convenient place to park.

Yelp
Nice spot in the shadows of Lucas Oil Stadium. Good food and solid cocktails. Friendly staff.

David O.

Yelp
Worst place I have ever been too. Absolutely disgusting! 2 hours no food. Waiter was clueless
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
This is such a great spot for dinner or drinks if you're near Lucas Oil for the night! We went for dinner and made reservations ahead of time. Thankfully we did, because it was packed on a Saturday. We each got a local beer from sun king and burgers. The burger and fries were incredible! The price was a little high once you added on the fries, but overall it was good! Our server was really friendly and corrected a mistake on our bill without a hassle.

Lynda K.

Yelp
We took our good friends here for an anniversary dinner. I was so disappointed! The food was terrible! The fish that came with the fish and chips was burnt and the fries were stone cold. My husband ordered the tuna steak and it was not cooked. It was almost raw. I ordered the Chicken salad and it was awful. Her husband ordered the pulled pork and it was just so so with cold fries. Needless to say we won't be going back. Ruined our evening
google avatar

Deb T.

Yelp
Our server, Jeremy was very good, we had a party of 9. He was friendly attentive and quick. The food was mediocre at best. Pricey for the very small bland portions. So many really good restaurants in Indy, would not recommend this spot.
google avatar

Yelp
We were Immediately greeted with attitude from the bartender to I'm guessing the host? We are from out of town We stopped in before an event and grabbed some drinks and went on the patio and the host told us we were a liability sitting on the patio and needed to leave or get a table. We were literally just sat at a table not even causing a scene or being loud. Work on your employees attitudes :) don't even really want to give 1 star.
google avatar

LaToya P.

Yelp
Although the lunch menu reads a little uninspiring, my selection was yummy. I chose to keep to the keto and I ordered the smoked wings (excellent) dry rub and the spinach salad. Both items were served visually appealing and the wings did not upset.

Yelp
On a work conference to Indianapolis, dinner reservations were made for approximately 30 people at Tavern on South. Our party was seated exclusively upstairs and with its own bar which was a fantastic experience. I love the ability to mingle over cocktails and even switch tables to speak with others, which is tough to do at other restaurant set-ups. Our bartenders were top notch. Friendly, attentive and fast with drinks. They also worked hard to bring food out for the buffet. Food was average and the chicken marsala was a big miss with most of our team due to the sauce. Since we'd been eating hotel buffets for 3 days, I was looking forward to dinner here but the buffet felt like more of the same. I'm sure if we'd been able to order off the menu that the experience would have been a step up. Tavern on South is close to several hotels and Lucas Oil Stadium. We stayed at the JW Marriott and walked the .5 mile each way rather than drive over. Thanks to the team for taking care of our crowd!
google avatar

Yelp
I went to lunch for work at Tavern on South two days in a row. And both meals were amazing. I had the bison burger and the French dip and both were fresh and delicious. The on-site parking is an incredible bonus. I sat upstairs both times and the tables and decor were mediocre but I am not someone who needs a fancy location for lunch. This is a popular lunch place so make sure to make a reservation. The only reason I am not giving five stars is because the service was good, but not great. My first day I was not impressed by the wait staff, second day was fine.
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
Mara and Briana are the Best bartenders in Indy!! Quick, outstanding service! A+++++

John H.

Yelp
How about be prepared with proper staffing for the lunch rush? 45:00 from order to delivery is unfuckingacceptable by ANY measure.
google avatar

Yelp
Tavern on South is THE spot to go before Colts and Indy Eleven games. We called on a Saturday afternoon and they let us make a reservation for six for that evening - we were in luck! I'd give it at least an hour and a half to have dinner here. We ordered soft pretzels, cheeseburgers and fries, rigatoni and chicken milanese. The soft pretzels were scrumptious and came with marinara and jalepeno queso fresco - yum! The cheeseburgers were pretty good, but none of us liked the chicken milanese so much. It was too big and we were slightly confused by the French-toast-like breading. However, I LOVED the rigatoni with chicken - it was delicious and we all decided that's what we'd order if we came back. I think the grilled chicken sandwich and pizzas sounded delicious as well. My favorite part about Tavern on South is the second-floor massive outdoor porch. It's a blast when it's warm out and accommodates a lot of people. They also have great cocktails and a fairly large beer/wine menu. Our server was kind and fast, although we didn't see him a ton. Excited to go back before the next game!

Yelp
People from my work love to go here because they have a parking lot and they are great about accommodating groups downtown. This past time I had the duck wings, which were delicious - The right combination of spices and crunch. I have never had duck wings before so this is a new experience for me and I was pleasantly surprised. A little more game-y and a different type of meat? I will say they definitely forgot to make them and had to make her really quickly after everyone else was served but that's fine it happens, especially with a group.

Yelp
Last night (6/27/2024), my job held an event on the second floor of Tavern on South. It was INCREDIBLE! The food was very, very good, but really what was the stand out was the staff. Brittany deserves a raise! She was incredibly sweet and helpful. It was a wonderful location, great ambiance, great vibes, great food, and AMAZING staff. 15/10 Great place.

Yelp
Bummed for myself this trip. Took 3 cohorts out of a conference for a quick walk down the road. Tavern has been very good in the past. No one was in the lobby when we arrived at about 12:15, though there was lunch noise from dinners upstairs. 5 minutes into our wait, we were greeted and seated. Our waiter was rushed and didn't seem all that interested in even taking our order, definitely no rapport there. My colleagues reported good meals.... chicken tacos, a cheeseburger, and a taxi salad all got good reviews. My Caesar salad....I requested dressing on the side. Oops, didn't happen. The salmon seemed undercooked on the meatier part of the portion, and I'm not certain it was blackened. The salad itself was tasty and I could eat about half the salmon. Our waiter was not very communicative though he did deliver refills promptly. I'll go again bc Tavern has been reliable in the past.
google avatar

Chandra P.

Yelp
We met here for a region mixer, because it was a group of 50+ people we occupied the entire second floor. Customer service was really great, the staff on kept the area clean and ensured we all had drinks. The meal options were pre-selected and those options were fairly good (the tomato bisque was excellent.) My only recommendation is that the staff ensure the utensils are clean, several on the table were dirty (we saw forks fall to the ground and a waitress kick the forks under the dessert table.) Aside from the above I thought it was a great location to host a large group gathering.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Ordered takeout after a downtown appointment. It's one of very few spots you are certain to find a parking spot (and free) during lunch downtown. Their burgers are hands down one of my favorites and the GF bun isn't bad (no fault of theirs). I'm a sucker for chips so I've actually never tried their fries yet. I can only dream of how the burger would taste with a "full of gluten" bun. There's upstairs seating outdoors, they have great appetizers, their location is outside of the major downtown area and they are PERFECT before Colts games. Get out there and try them!
google avatar

Stefan H.

Yelp
Went with a party of 10 in town for a meeting. We had one server for the group who provided adequate service. We ordered appetizers for the table. The sweet potato fries were served at room temperature and were sent back. Fresh ones were not made, they were simply heated up and returned to the table all stuck together and still not hot! The breaded cauliflower was right out of the freezer, and there was some potato chips that I guess were okay. The only decent appetizer was the pretzel, which was actually pretty good! For my entree, I ordered the ribeye tips, which the server said people raved about. I received a plate full of meat scraps! Some were well done, some were rare some were medium. Some were tender, some were tough, some were fatty! It really seemed like I just got all the pieces of meat that were discards, cooked, and served on a plate covered with some sauce. I was only able to eat half of it. A real disappointment! When back in Indianapolis, I'll be looking for someplace else to eat!
google avatar

Cristina H.

Yelp
This Tuscan stuffed chicken was tasty! The asparagus was cooked to perfection. Cool spot right next to Lucas oil. Nice thing about this restaurant is being downtown and there is a parking lot. They have a upstairs and downstairs patio. You can sit with your furry friends on the downstairs patio! Upstairs patio is heated and has a nice view! Service and servers are amazing. I would definitely ask for Brianna or SteveO, they were delightful!
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
Would eat lunch here fairly often before Covid. Food is better than just typical bar food. Today stopped in after ballgame. They have two floors and an outdoor patio on second floor. There's usually parking avl in their lot, but if not, there's a garage nearby. I've always been able to have a conversation, so noise has not been a problem. In past, I've had sea bass sandwich for lunch, amazing; not sure it's still on menu. This visit I had a mango cart beer and crab cakes. I really enjoyed the beer. The cakes had real crab as I got the occasional shell but I prefer more lumps of crab. My friend told me I was just spoiled from Maryland blue crab cakes. This is one location I have missed while wfh during Covid.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Locally owned and great spot for a group lunch or to meet up with friends. Food is excellent. Although menu isn't large they have a good variety including curry, fish tacos (corn or flour), salads and burgers. There is a gluten-free bread option. Parking is free and they have their own lot. Service is exceptional. Nice bar and outside seating.
google avatar

Poco P.

Yelp
Service excellent! All Covid rules in place & outdoor seating available w/ a view of downtown upstairs. Nice & clean spot for drinks. Food was a bit blah, but this Tavern was located next to our hotel so we thought we'd give it a shot. Ordered the Beef Medallion. Nothing special & would be better served w/ mashed potatoes. The potatoes were over Sea Salted, which that coarse salt would be used in moderation lol. Asparagus, skinny, a bit over cooked & wilted. I thought I would be safe ordering the Chicken Tacos, but they didn't have sour cream which is odd if you serve tacos. The kind server brought me extra of a Chipotle kinda sauce that was on the tacos... a bit blah. The salsa on the tacos were like mush, chicken was cooked well tho. I asked for hot sauce & the only kind they had was Frank's. No problem, however when I opened it, it was totally corroded w/ dried hot sauce & looked disgusting! No rush to go back & unimpressed by the food. However, w/ Covid ruining businesses, I would recommend them for drinks, service & outdoor seating.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Food was great! I had the buffalo chicken wrap which was delicious. Location is great and I love that there is a free parking lot. Will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Well I'll say it's a nice looking place. Wish I would have had the burger because everyone else said that was good.... But noooooo I had to go with the PoTato

Yelp
Awesome food! I had the Mahi ... Dee's recommendation. Great choice... well season ... nice proportions. Loved it!

Yelp
My colleague and I enjoyed our visit here. We were in Indy on business and stayed at a hotel near Lucas Oil Stadiu. That made this establishment rather convenient as a place for dinner. The storefront was inviting with a slightly vintage feel. The decor was likewise rather comfortable with a decent amount of seating. There was a full bar with a contiguous dining area. We went in on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded. Our server, Steve, attended to us right away and did a good job taking care of us. The menu featured the American tavern-style fare one would expect. We both started with tomato basil soup, which turned out to be a good opener. For my main, I tried the blackened whitefish and was quite happy with it. My colleague tried the Pasta Giordano and had good comments about it. She also sampled the Creme Broulee for dessert. I had a bite and agreed with her that it was nicely done. The final bill with food, drinks, tax and tip was $106. At $53 per person, it was not cheap but I thought the quality of the experience was worth it. As such, I would be happy to try this place again. The only thing I found odd was the fact that they closed at 9 PM. With a full bar there, that struck me as strange.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I started with an amazing deep eddy drink that was listed on the drink menu. We got an appetizer of a spinach artichoke dip that was good. My family ordered a French dip and the other two ordered a flat iron steak. I, however, ordered a chicken sandwich. We all started eating our food and i ate a few bites with the bun but after a few bites removed the bun and used a fork and knife. I continued speaking with my family before i realized i ate half the chicken and it was raw in the middle. I felt instantly sick and upset to my stomach because of it. They comped my meal and our appetizer but i am hoping to not get really sick in the next few days.

Yelp
My husband and I have made Tavern on the South a regular stop for the past several years. One of the main reasons is its close proximity to Lucas Oil Stadium. Every year, we attend the DCI Drum Corps finals, and this is where we dine with our friends before the big event. Tavern on the South has friendly staff, but sometimes the quality of the food can be hit or miss. Tonight, I ordered the Caprese Salmon with a Crab Cakes appetizer. Both were well prepared and delicious. My husband ordered the Double Pork Chops, which he quite enjoyed. We also decided to indulge in a little dessert: the flourless chocolate torte. It was very rich and creamy. I would recommend sharing this dessert, as it is really rich. (I thought this was worth mentioning twice.) Last year, I ordered the Caesar Salad, which was I quite enjoyed. It was definitely one of the better Caesar Salads I have ever tried. The Bison Burger also deserves a mention. If you are in the mood for a burger, try this over the traditional cheeseburger. You won't be disappointed. I give Tavern On the South 4 stars versus 5 because in past visits, my food was anything but delectable. The last two years, however, have been a pleasant surprise. So I would recommend that you give it a try and judge for yourself.

Yelp
Very disappointed! We went downtown for the Big 10 championship. I normally love Tavern on South. They didn't offer the full menu, so what I wanted I couldn't have. They didn't have any drink specials and want $60 dollars to part to eat lunch. Not a good experience. Will not go back.
google avatar

Accacia G.

Yelp
This place was decent! The drinks were the highlight for me. The fried cauliflower appetizer was everything and my coworkers loved the spinach artichoke dip as well because it had a smoky flavor. I got the carbonara and I wasn't impressed but I'd definitely try something else because my coworkers meals looked delicious

Yelp
Had a great time before the Bucs / Colts game! They opened early and were well prepared for the game! Get there early or make reservations! Indoor tailgating is the best when temps are below zero! We highly recommend the Tavern burger!
google avatar

Yolanda M.

Yelp
I had the crab & artichoke stuffed salmon that came with asparagus and hash browns. It was pretty good. My server, Mara, was great. She was really cool and down to earth and was able to answer all of our questions that we had about the menu. She was busy with a few tables but she made sure to check back in and take care of us.
google avatar

Matt U.

Yelp
Very disappointed with menu items, no drink special for championship game, had to make reservations and didn't offer full menu, food was good but I really wanted to try buffalo burger. Staff was friendly just not knowledgeable and we had to wait for drinks and they weren't even busy. I still want to try burger some time just won't be during a big weekend. All their website talked about was a blood orange whiskey sour, couldn't get it, out of season. Not Impressed specially after bill. My advice to go when it's not a big weekend! The buffalo califlour bites were delicious, pita bread and spinach dip was amazing, fish and chips were good, hopefully they have special drinks for teams visiting.

Yelp
Do come here if... -You're looking to make a reservation for 25 people. Tavern on South is super accommodating, making it less stressful for the party planner. -You want to sit outside with a great view of the city. The upstairs patio is shaded, so no need to worry about a sunburn. Do not come here if... -You're looking for a mind-blowing food experience.
