The Owners of Taverne Midway Open a Cocktail Bar in the Village | Eater Montreal

"I know the Quartier des Spectacles cocktail bar Taverne Midway as a relatively somber spot, donning dark woods, copper fixtures, and rusty red brick walls; it has been open since 1927 and is described as a mythic, even emblematic, Montreal institution located at the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Laurent." - Valerie Silva

Quebec Adds a Montreal Cocktail Bar to Its Vaccine Passport Pilot Project | Eater Montreal

"I note that long-standing Montreal cocktail bar Taverne Midway volunteered to run a pilot of Quebec’s forthcoming vaccine passport system on August 20 (5 p.m.–11 p.m.), during which it will scan customers’ proof-of-vaccination QR codes using the province’s new smartphone app. The bar said its participation should not be interpreted as a stance on vaccination but as an effort to help the beleaguered restaurant community, and it assured customers who do not wish to participate in the trial that they would not be refused entry. Open since 1927, the Midway is an iconic, even emblematic, Montreal institution located at the corner of Sainte‑Catherine and Saint‑Laurent that has witnessed many chapters of the city’s history." - Valerie Silva

This is an absolutely beautiful bar and great place for billiards / pool and beer. The staff were all so incredibly nice. The beer they recommended was delicious, and the pool area was nice and and secluded from the rest of the bar. The one downside to the pool table is that it is near the washrooms. The atmosphere is what elevates this bar as a spot to recommend. See the pictures for an idea, but the music selection fits the art deco vibe they have going perfectly in my opinion. Other than the price of the beers which was a bit high, this is definitely a bar worth going to if you can afford it.

I came here for the first time last month and had the best time ever with my friend! My friend suggested that it was a great place for drinks and music; he was absolutely right! There are many think options and they are brought to us very quickly. They had a DJ who was playing really good music from modern hits to classic throwbacks. My friend and I were singing and dancing in our seats the entire time. The staff members were extremely friendly and were having fun as they were working; it was refreshing to see that. We had a blast and we'll definitely be back.

Honestly one of the best bars in Montréal — no question about it! The atmosphere is always perfect, whether you’re there for a chill night or a wild one. But what really makes Midway special is the people. The staff is absolutely incredible — from the manager to the bartenders, servers, and even the busboys. Everyone goes out of their way to make you feel at home. They actually remember their customers, greet you by name, and treat you like a friend, not just a face in the crowd. It’s rare to find that kind of genuine care and consistency these days. The service, the energy, the smiles — everything feels personal and authentic every single time. Huge thank you to the whole team for always bringing that good vibe and making every visit a good memory. You guys make Montréal proud! 🍻

Google
I come once a month to this place and the service is always great. My last visit was yesterday, I was offered a place at the bar right next to the computer so another waiter offered me a better spot and his service was just excellent. I ordered few drinks and some chicken wings that came with some veggies (with a little bug) but things happen. I would happily keep coming. The service was fast even when the bar was packed.

Google
Good place overall more on the pricey side. The food portions aren’t as big as the price. But everything tastes good and cocktails have lots of variety

Google
A place that has been operating since 1927 (and we shamefully had no idea about) where we wandered one Friday night after a show nearby. A lively atmosphere complete with a pool table, wooden high tables, neon signs and a tiny hint of art deco as a nod to its roots. Our drinks were somewhat adequate. Good but nothing to write home about. The service we experienced on a busy night was very amicable and prompt.

Google
Very cool place, The pool is free and nachos are very good!

Google
Went here for drinks two times during the week. There’s always place at the bar and few tables available. It’s candid place and the ratio of alcohol in the drinks are fair for the price. People at the pool table are usually welcoming and friendly. Going there alone isn’t weird , will come back.

Yelp
This place owes me nothing! The 2000s throwback party was like a blast from the past. i was coming in from out of town (mini vacation) and the wonderful bartender informed me there would be a party around 10 and it would go until 3am. She suggested 'Bar Pamplemousse' for dinner and a cocktail and i am glad i made the stop. when i get back this place is in full 2000s RAVE decorations. take me back! They were so kind and the drinks were poppin'! i ended up staying out with the locals and having a great night. I ended up in the Village at karaoke! all i can say is the prices were not issue. the staff were lively and fun! this was all out of the blue on a Monday night and i was treated like royalty! **It didn't hurt i was like to the only person there was alive in 2004* lol! thank you for an amazing kick off! pro tips: you have to pay as you go there are no tabs. they take a card and will convert the dollars tips are tips! park across the block it's a short walk take a ride service... the drinks are strong AF! ultra pro tip: bring an umbrella #iykyk

Yelp
Other side of Montreal from the old port area...this was recommended by a bartender at a different spot, we walked, we shouldn't have... but we did grab a uber after our stretchy noodles. The midway was awesome, but we had to take it easy as we realized we were t in Kansas anymore.

Yelp
I want to give this place another fair review because the first time was a bit underwhelming. The music is really loud, the drinks and food are quite expensive, and the seating can be uncomfortable with all the high stools and tables. I recommend asking for a booth in advance since it would be such a cool place to hang out with friends if they had tables and chairs instead. The drinks menu is insane, they have everything you can think of to drink. It sounds silly to say but I wish they also had soft drinks and ice teas since I'm not a drinker. But they do have non alcoholic cocktails. This is just me being nitpicky. The service is great and the vibe is cool. Just some small stuff I noticed. Next time I do want to try the food and see if that changes my mind.

Yelp
This bar has turned into my favorite place to visit when I'm in Montreal. Great drinks, friendly staff and an overall great place to hangout with friends. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We came to midway because the bartender at the W hotel recommended it to us and I must say it was awesome. We were in Montreal 6 nights and we came to midway 3/6 nights we were in town. We even came to celebrate New Year's Eve after our hotel completely disappointed us with their celebration. The bartenders were super nice and welcoming. They make great drinks. If I lived in Montreal I would definitely be a regular at midway. Great ambiance, good music and awesome drinks!

Yelp
5/5 atmosphere and food, try the Cajun wings and pulled pork flatbread! Tonight was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Little note about the service: I've never seen a bartender have to come out from the bar to serve customers while the waitress sits at the barstools with customers to watch the game. We waited 25 minutes for our waitress to take our food order but that never happened so I got up and waited at the bar. I think it was the busboy who kindly took and entered our order; he and another waiter served us after but it was the same waitress who came to collect the bill and her tip. I'll regret leaving that tip if it isn't shared by all the staff. I'd come back again and don't mind ordering from the bar for the Cajun wings. Would love to see bigger screens for the sports too.

Yelp
This bar was so much fun. They played really great alternative and indie music and was a great place for sitting down with friends. We ordered so many great drinks like the Amaretto Sour, Moscow Mule, and the Hugo and loved them all.

Yelp
Super service for real was my first time going there but definitely would come back. Waiters were very friendly and super quick on service. I lovdd my experience there even if I personally didn't like my cocktail cause I'm pretty picky in general. Other then that an awesome place with a large selection of beer and cocktails plus their food seems also delicious and the best is that their pool table is free to use ;)

Yelp
Great drinks and service! We had some time to kill before going to club soda so stopped for a drink. I got a jungle bird my husband a Mai tai both were delicious and we got a table outside with a wait.

Yelp
When they said last call they mean it's your last drink. Bartenders continued making drinks for others. Bartenders felt bothered.

Yelp
I will start off by saying that I was super wasted when I arrived, but I was conscious enough to know that I loved my visit to Midway. After visiting Picnik Electronique, my cousin and her friends decided to continue the night so went to Midway to visit their friend who is actually a bartender of this place. Like I've mentioned, I was super drunk from the music festival, but I do remember this. As the night went on my cousin and her crew were enjoying themselves and I get it... I'm the visitor/outsider since I'm the American and can only speak English. (Nothing wrong with it, I'm used to it. All of my cousins are French so this happens regularly). Everyone was conversing in French and I couldn't chime in but the bartender actually started chatting with me and we had a healthy conversation about his job here. Now, I'm always admired bartenders and their skill set so I just started talking about his training, what he loves the most about it, and his past/future work places. (Yes still drunk, but sober enough to ask these kinds of questions). Honestly, best time there because of it. I know that there are a lot of choices to go drink at, but this bar has really cool bartenders and the ownership is just fantastic with this place. I need to ask my cousin what the guys name was because I really need to give him props for making killer drinks and creating just awesome vibes.

Yelp
I wandered here while visiting Montreal for Jazz Fest 2017 by using Yelp to look for Dive Bars. The first Dive Bar I visited sucked. This was the second dive bar listed and boy am I glad I came here. I stopped by next door for some poutine at the Montreal Pool room. (In my opinion it was the best Poutine in all of Montreal after staying a week and going to every poutine place I could find.) I wandered here for a beer. The server was kind enough to let me sit outside on their fairly large patio as long as I ordered a beer for myself and my friend. Since I didn't know what the local beers were I asked the server for a recommendation and they came back with something amazing! And it wasn't that expensive either! I love this bar and you'll find they have some wonderful beers for not too expensive a price. I'll be back!

Yelp
Fantastic place for cocktails. They are true artists here, with a lot of attention to detail and the best combination of ingredients. It's not just about taste here, your olfactory senses will be delighted at the sane time. The music selection is a bit loud (fine for me, but some may be concerned), and features a very moody mix of psychedelic styles. I really wasn't expecting this at a bar that appears to be named after an American sports arena. It's a lot more groovy here than you'd think.

Yelp
this was a wonderful evening outing! we visited on a sunday night and the service couldn't have been better! the brie was amazing and the drinks were very well crafted! great ambiance and 10/10 experience. id highly recommend!

Yelp
This is my new go to place for a quick drink or entire night of getting crazy. The decor is very modern, steel pipes on the celling, photos about the history my of Montreal on the wall, mirrors that make the place look even more spacious. Lots of table to sit down and even some couches spread out in the bar. The location is right in between a new development project of the St-Laurent street and the old shady vibes. But not to worry, the bouncer will watch over you when you're having a smoke and chase unwanted attention from you. Full bar, the choices aren't limited, if you know what you want, the bartender will make it happen. We we're celebrating a birthday and the bartender on duty was very generous with the amount of alcohol in the drinks. The ambiance is great, they we're rocking Grooveshark and took demands all night. The best surprise was the pool table in the back, available for only 50cent a game. Overall, one of the best new bar I have been in a while. Will definitely be back for more fun and drinks!

Yelp
I have been there with a friend recently and I was positively surprised with this place. The area is really a mix of everything so I was not expecting much. I pass in front of it almost every day because I work in the old Montréal but I never really noticed it. The staff who welcomed me was nice and friendly and the decoration is also very nice. There was a decent selection of beer and wine special for the happy hour and also 3 different drinks for 6$, so we tried all of them: negroni, Tom Collins and mojito. Surprisingly drinks were not cheap, it was strong. We also had a nachos to share which was good and a bit different with the sausages and BBQ sauce. I usually don't expect much from this kind of food, usually industrial sauce and average toppings but again a nice discovery. The staff was super friendly the whole evening. So I left with 30$ bill, tip included, tipsy, full belly and happy ! It's a really good option to avoid average and expensive drinks from the old Montréal bars.

Yelp
Ended up at Midway because the original place I intended to go to was too busy. We got a table right away around 10pm and had good service. The drinks were well priced and their burger was tasty as well. Be aware that around 11pm the volume of the music in this place goes way up and the back area of the bar becomes somewhat of a club, so if you're there with friends to chat and hangout it gets bit difficult to hear yourself speak. All in all, we stayed until 1:45am when it just became to loud for us but we were happy to have come across this place. I would go again for sure.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Left and retuned later in the night. I was greeted by a free drink. Will be back when in Montreal.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing beer and cocktail selection. I highly recommend trying as many as you can handle. Nachos as an appy will definitely help tide you over so you can have a few more drinks. The atmosphere and ambiance of this place is off the charts. The bar staff are extremely friendly and very attentive. You next trip to Montreal should definitely include a stop at the Midway.
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
Friendly staff in a trendy atmosphere. The midway is a sophisticated, without pretention institution. I guaranty you will have a good time!
google avatar

Yelp
Warm and fun atmosphere. We came on a weeknight and ate nachos. Service was great, albeit it was not a very busy evening. Drinks featured an abundance of fresh orange/lime zest, which made classic cocktails extra delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Dive Alert! We did not have the experience that John Q had (thank goodness) but we did enjoy a quick stop for 2 pints. Mugs are cheap, $3 each for Molson Export.
google avatar

Maude C.

Yelp
I went there for the first time to get a drink before a dinner reservation. The place was packed at 6pm on a Friday but we managed to get a seat. The staff was very helpful and attentive and quickly gave us the happy hour rundown: $6 for all pints, wine, and a selection of cocktails. Tried the French75 and the caipirinha and they were both delicious and quite strong. This may become a go-to before going to shows in the neighbourhood. The only reason I can't award 5 stars is that it was a bit loud: we had to shout more than I would want to to keep a conversation going over the table, but the ambiance made up for it.
google avatar

Lison C.

Yelp
Not bad for a drink but 15$ for a hot dog with a side of coleslaw is a joke. No fries, just a hot dog wrap in bacon in a bun. Sad. But the cocktails were great.

Yelp
I saw so many good reviews about Midway that I was very excited to give it a try but I am sad to say it fell very short of expections:( I am hoping that maybe I happened to go on a bad night because my experience was nothing like all the good reviews I saw. For starters we were seated for a very long time before even being acknowledged by any staff or server to come bring us menus or greet us. We had to find someone and flag them down for menus at the bar. Again it took a very long time for anyone to come take our drink and food orders. Our server seemed very uninterested and not attentive and never even cracked a smile. The menu items are not fancy but very suitable options as a quick bite to have with a a few drinks and they seemed to have some interesting options like duck confit poutine , pulled pork sliders , hamburger etc unfortunately at 8pm on a Friday night they had already run out of most of the food items. So we were left to choose between nachos and Mac and cheese. Some of us ordered the sausage nachos and were underwhelmed. while the chips were good and tasted home made there was almost no toppings ... barely any cheese , no more olives and small portion of salsa compared to the heap of sour creme. Also the sausage had a weird taste. I and a few others had the Mac and cheese which was the better option but still not great. There was cheese on top but there was barely any cheese inside and the noodles were very dry and lacked a lot of flavour. The portions were pretty big but the food itself was underwhelming. We also ordered some beer and cider - decent selection of beer at reasonable price and did have some cocktail options on the menu as well. The decor inside was very nice and clean and the staff behind the bar were more friendly and helpful than our server. This place can accommodate groups and nice dim lighting for a date as well. I really wanted to like this place and I feel it has a lot of potential but my first experience was very disappointing:(

Yelp
People were friendly. A fun place to go. The waitress accidentally dropped off a second beer at about table. About 20 minutes later she said she bought us that beer because she delivered it to the wrong table. Once we got our check, she charged us. When I questioned her about it, she said we started drinking the beer so she had to charge us. Very confusing. Maybe something was lost in translation. Where I come from if I buy you something I don't charge you.

Yelp
First time to Montreal and we found a great spot in Midway! Great setup inside, and great service. Spent two nights hanging out in this place. Food was delicious. Our group had the wings, nachos and Mac and cheese, all were great portions and very good. Also, we got a sampling of the the chefs beef jerky, hopefully an added menu item soon. Great bar selection and great place to relax. Thanks for the hospitality and love the black M hats! Thanks , we'll be back!

Yelp
the drinks here are amazing and service is excellent! the decor industrial and dim lights, the ambiance is cozy and sexy. must try as a Mtl bar

Aira B.

Yelp
The music tends to be a little loud the later it is. It's not the best place if you want to catch up with some friends since you can't really hear them over the loud music. Which is why I suggest staying on the terrace/outside if you have the option. Overall, service was good, we only went there for drinks, mojitos were decent.
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
I like the place, tiny entracy but full space inside, lumieres tamisées, table de billard au fond, beer if necessary ;)
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This USED TO BE my favorite bar because of the friendly service, great music, good bar menu, drink portions and reasonable prices. Unfortunately the bar no longer stands out among the rest. It is now just another pricey cocktail bar with an average selection and meagre portions. What's more, when I aired the specifics of my disappointment to the manager, he snapped at me saying that he had personally made those changes, which he's proud of, and that I didn't have anything constructive to say(??). Needless to say, he kept arguing and defending himself, to which I replied, if he's not interested in listening to constructive feedback from his clients then I have nothing more to say, then I walked off.
google avatar

Jesse G.

Yelp
As an experienced whiskey drinker I am sometimes left a little disappointed at the selection behind the bar and knowledge of the barman. If you like local beer, its a good place to visit before going out, but for anything more delicate, their ice tastes weird and the staff kinda green. Overall a good place tho.

Yelp
Great service, strong well done drinks and a fun atmosphere. This is a perfect spot to meet up with a big group of friends. There is a terrace outside and a pool table inside, excellent choice for Friday night's drinks.

Yelp
This bar became my go to place during my Montreal adventuring. Located on the corner of the old "RED-LIGHT" district it looks a little hidden from the venues around it. Despite the large wooden patio area in from of it. It may have been the best cocktail bar i went to in the city. The decor was def industrial with half cut barrels for lights and bartenders Wearing blacksmith aprons. There is a slightly large pool table (free to use) in the back and plenty of room to bring a larger party. They need to upgrade the pool balls and cue but you get what you pay for. Definitely check out this bar when you are in the area.

Yelp
My favorite bar un town, beautiful decor, great host and, Sharp classic cocktail list.

Yelp
Nice bar, good ambiance. Bartenders were friendly despite my poor French. Old Fashioned was mixed pretty well; Manhattan could use a little work (use less vermouth next time). All in all, a good place to spend a couple hours.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite bar in the city last summer. I went back last month and I was SO sad to see what it turned out. It is now populated by a bunch of 20 year old who listen to Drake all night. If you're looking for a low key cocktail bar with a cool atmosphere, look elsewhere :(
