Where to Find a Marvelous Mid-Week Lunch in Portland

"This charming deli, market, and luncheonette offers a succinct menu of sandwiches, salads, and specials that combine the two. For something green, try the kale Caesar or the lemon poppy Waldorf salad. Sandwich best bets include roast beef, cacio e pepe chicken salad, and egg salad. If a more laid-back lunch is the plan, Taylor Street Kitchen also offers some daytime cocktails like a cold brew martini, an Aperol spritz, and a citrus rosemary gin and tonic." - Rebecca Roland, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Where to Find a Marvelous Mid-Week Lunch in Portland

"Chef Althea Grey Potter — formerly of Oui Wine Bar — has taken over the kitchen at this charming downtown Portland deli, market, and luncheonette, and it shows. Those familiar with her work know she loves bold and unending layers of flavor, which appears here in dishes like roasted delicata squash salad, tossed in harissa vinaigrette with sunflower seed dukkah, goat cheese, and pomegranate seeds. Other salads from the case range from potato salad with sheep’s milk feta to red quinoa and carrots with dijon-citrus vinaigrette; they’re best paired with the roast chicken served as a part of Taylor Street’s lunch plate. Otherwise, the cacio e pepe chicken salad, bolstered with sundried tomato pesto, is a standout." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Great coffee, good vibes, beautiful atmosphere, great music and amazing food! I’ve been coming here for years, my entire work place comes daily for lunch or coffee and pastries. As well as take home items for dinner like fresh frozen pasta sauce or soups. The ever changing market items are always fun to find new treats and gifts for friends! Love the sandwiches and salads but don’t skip on their amazing coffee ✨

Google
Incredible spot! The mortadella was the best sandwich of our lives. We loved the salty ciabatta round too. If you care about quality ingredients and delicious food at a good price, this is your spot. Thank you—we’ll be back!

Christopher Ammerman

Google
The best lunch spot in downtown Portland. Sweetest staff, freshest feel-good ingredients, this is a special place! Try a sandwich, a soup… and even as a health-nut… the cookies 🤤

Google
Have been meaning to stop in here for a while, I live in the neighborhood. Just kind of had a wacky moment and was out for an unplanned mental health walk. Pleasantly surprised to find gluten free/low carb options! Everything was delicious and the staff were nice ☺️ I'll definitely be back! Photo is of the GF tomato eggplant soup and arugula salad. 😋

Google
I got the soup and salad for $11 and it was definitely worth it. They had a delicious soup that was gluten-free and dairy-free. The salad i had was a beet, goat cheese, walnut, arugula salad with balsamic vinegar. Both were tasty and I would eat it again.

Google
I asked for recommendations from the staff and they were extremely helpful in picking out different options from the lunch menu! The soups were incredible. I was not expecting them to be so good! The atmosphere was very relaxing. I highly recommend this place!

Google
Soups are made from scratch and delicious. I don't like bacon or butternut squash so I didn't try that weeks soups. I did get a granola bar that was absolutely delicious. I also split a sandwich which was good a little dry it needed more pesto. Coffee is reasonably priced. Definitely grabbing a loaf of bread on my next visit.

Google
Spent a working afternoon in this wonderful cafe. The space is bright and airy. The folks who there yesterday were awesome and very comfortable with us spending a few hours working and enjoying their great service, food and drinks. Will definitely be back to try more of their delectable cuisine

Yelp
A lot more low key with food options than I was expecting but the items they do sell were fantastic. Get the Kale Caesar !!!! I would come back just for that. Staff was chill and everything was clean. Bathroom was cute too. Perfect lunch place.

Yelp
A great modern deli serving sandwiches, salads, and coffees. They also have some wines and market items. Apparently, you can also open their bottle and have it at the shop without a corkage fee! We'll definitely be back for that. You can get a few combos of soups, salads, and sandwiches. When we got there the selection was a tad limited but we did enjoy the Aleppo Tuna and Mortadella Sandwiches. Fillings were tasty and fresh. The bread was nicely seasoned but could have been toastier.

Yelp
Wow, must go for the refreshing salads! The kale Caesar is amazing. The roasted beet is even better. The price is great for two small salads, $11. Service was very sweet as they help me with my plates to my table with my baby. The decor and ambiance is so cute, calm and modern. Parking is street parking. Counter service, so order at the register and bust your own table.

Yelp
This place will see me again! Service was quick and the staff were so kind even though the lunch rush was crazy. I ordered the half chicken plate to-go - it came with a chicken leg and I got the kale Caesar salad, I also ordered the garlic and rosemary boule (roll), SO YUM!! It was a delicious lunch so much so that I forgot to take a pic.

Yelp
BEASTED! After a gluttonous few days on vacation my friend and I were in desperate need of some salads so we stopped in here after looking over there menu. My friend got their soup of the day, vegan chili, and enjoyed it. I got the salad trio where you pick three of their many salads. I got the poppyseed coleslaw, kale ceaser, and quinoa chickpea which was the best one in my opinion. Great food, good service, and everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Pdxglobetrotter G.

Yelp
The chicken, ginger, and vegetable soup was so bland, I couldn't finish it. The sandwich was okay, but I prefer more filling to bread. They are made with focaccia bread.

Yelp
This is actually a really good deli. These are not the basic sandwiches and salads that you make at home. Better than Elephant's or Addy's (no offense to those places, they're good). The classics are elevated here - the breads are all so good and taste freshly baked, they use a lot of fresh herbs (dill ftw), and everything is flavorful, balanced, and seasoned to perfection. Nothing tastes bland or lazily sloshed around with too much mayo or dressing. So go, buy a loaf of bread, try all the salads, get a pastry - it's all delish.

Yelp
We had many of the starters, most of which I couldn't eat. They looked fantastic but I have egg allergies. The seared tuna was excellent. We didn't have time to try the entrees but definitely souk like to go back
google avatar

Heather E.

Yelp
The food looks so fresh and was so delicious! The sauce on the sandwich with the fresh greens was so good! We had the sausage and potato soup and that was just perfect! Super clean inside!

Yelp
Visiting in the area and tried this place. Hesitated at first because the options are unique. Very friendly and offer soup sampling. We order at sat down to eat. Very tasty. Very yummy. Chicken soup was excellent. Best carrot cake I ever had. Highly recommended.

Ashley Q.

Yelp
Another shout out to Taylor Street Kitchen! We ordered a variety of cookies for an event. They were perfectly packaged. The cookies were devoured and requests for more coming in. Thank you!

Amanda C.

Yelp
I was in the area for work and this place was recommended to me by a colleague. It's the perfect cozy lunch spot on a chilly day. I came in around 12:05/12:10 which was truly just before the lunch rush (began around 12:15). Ordered the mortadella sandwich (whipped ricotta, pistachio, olive, and greens) and the tomato, ginger, and lentil soup. Both were great, but the soup was definitely a favorite. Cappuccino was delightful and I ordered a piece of the coconut carrot cake to go, based on other reviews. Highly recommend and looking to come back!

Yelp
Exceptional food with creative salads, sandwiches, soups, breads, desserts for all times of day served with smiles and honoring the customers' needs. The parking is easy and is within walking distance to the PDX Art Museum and library. There is a large wine list thoughtfully curated. This is a wonderful spot for meeting friends or for solo dining, book groups or business associates. There is a very good selection of local products for gifts needed on the go. I highly recommend Taylor Street Kitchen...A true gem--there aren't enough Stars

Yelp
this place was EXCELLENT. tomato bisque was so flavorful - creamy and tangy and just great. i had the deli turkey sandwich and the bread was perfect - thin layer of crust, soft on the inside. very cute interior. i will definitely be back if i'm in PDX.

Yelp
Taylor Street Kitchen is a new eat-in or takeaway spot, a speciality grocery, and bakes in-house. In the deli case are proteins, like beef and chicken, and on my visit, meatballs. And there are sides and deli salads. You can get those to go or eat in at one of their small tables and their large communal table. Too busy to make dinner? Bring it home! They bake right there, so they have a small selection of sweet items, things like a savory jalapeno and asparagus scone, and some solid loaves of bread, including an olive como. There are refrigerated and frozen cases for meats and drinks. There are shelves for coffee, condiments, pasta, and many other kitchen ingredients. They have a lunch or dinner special of a protein, a robust greens salad that surpasses the usual mixed greens, and a choice of two sides. If you are dining in, they have local beer and wine on tap. Or you can take it home, to the park, or back to the office. It reminds me of the long closed lunch and salad spot with the original italian restaurant in the Hotel Vintage Plaza. The space is airy, bright, and modern with some classic influences. The staff were excited about opening and evolving a new small business. Did I say yummy, yes it is!

Yelp
Very reasonably priced sandwiches . Served on foccia bread ; 2 soups of the day. Delicious.

Yelp
Taylor Street Kitchen is such a breath of fresh air in Downtown Portland. I am SO thankful to have them near my office so I can grab lunch there a couple times a week. Their seasonal menu is the perfect lunch -- reasonably priced, nutritious and absolutely delicious. I just spent $10 for lunch and got a cup of the most delicious split pea soup I've ever had, with a sizable chunk of fresh sour dough that's appropriately chewy on the inside and crusty on the outside, and a side of the roasted pear, delicata squash and quinoa salad. OMG, I cannot overstate how tasty and amazing it was. The PERFECT fall lunch. Their staff is always super welcoming and helpful. I also love that they recently added the ability to preorder online!

Yelp
Fresh, quick and easy pickup for lunch. Cute little market area as well. The soup was delicious and we met a young man who comes back for the same lemon wedge pastry every time he dines. We shared a matcha strawberry posset which was really yummy. The salads are great as well. We ordered at the counter and the employee seemed knowledgeable of what they offered.

Jackie G.

Yelp
The food was unique and tasty. The staff were fantastic. I don't usually order vegetarian, but the sandwiches were amazing.

Yelp
Really cute and delicious local lunch spot. I had the roast beef sandwich with a kale caesar salad on the side. Everything was fresh and tastes homemade. The aroma of their roasted chicken made me wish I had room for more, but the sandwich was filling while still feeling light. The staff was kind and helpful. It's an easy walk from the art museum. The music and ambiance was really relaxing and charming. Would love a place like this in my neighborhood!

Yelp
I love this place. Friendly staff (especially the owner), and more importantly, delicious and fresh food. Whether I'm trying to be healthy, or I want to treat myself, I can always find something to hit the spot here. It's definitely become a go-to option for me. The salads are all so good. If all salads tasted like this, I'd eat a lot more vegetables. The steak and chicken are always perfectly cooked. If you're into sandwiches, they also have a very good steak sandwich. It has bleu cheese, which I don't always love, but I like this sandwich. And...the pizza! They only serve it after 4, but it's worth stopping by for. I've only had the pepperoni but it hit the spot. If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to try their baked goods. My favorites have been the ginger cookie, lemon bar, and cheesecake bar. And if you just need some grocery staples, they also sell some pastas and sauces, meats, pantry items like salt and flours, and beer and wine (those are grocery staple, right?).

Yelp
This is what you want a salad and sandwich to be. Aleppo tuna sandwich is so so good, served on olive ciabatta. Kale salad is amazing. Highly recommend. If you want a healthy nice lunch, look no further.
google avatar

Arpa A.

Yelp
I had the caprese sandwich with a side kale Cesar which was light and super flavorful. I didn't take a picture of it but my husband ordered the pastrami and it was my favorite. I would recommend that. It's a super cute and healthy lunch option if you're downtown.

Yelp
OMG - run, NOT WALK, to Taylor Street Kitchen! This place is amazing. A deli case full of tasty lunch items and treats, fresh made breads and so many fun + unique items to purchase in their market section. I have never had a bad experience here and I love popping in for a delicious treat of some sort.

Yelp
Outstanding quality foods. Great take out counter of well prepared and constructed desserts, dishes and sandwiches. The bread is made daily and some of the best I have ever tasted. My favorite right now is the levain. The chocolate chip cookie could be rated the best in all of Portland. This is a very hard working small business and we want to support this shop and we reap the benefits.

Jared B.

Yelp
If you're in the area and want delicious, quick, nourishing food... look no further. Friendly staff and clean, airy, comfortable seating areas.

Arthur D.

Yelp
Taylor St Kitchen has excellent food and is perfect for breakfast or lunch. Their chicken paired with a great salad can't be beat.

Prechous H.

Yelp
The tuna sandwich was 4.5/5. The bread was a little bit hard to enjoy. The service was great and even though it was a busy day, the ambiance wasn't overwhelming.

Yelp
In the beautiful Paramount Hotel. Takeout for 3 burgers for Burger Week. Sensational flavor of meat, sauce, and bun. Had fondue sauce, jalapeño slices, pickles, and an aioli on a potato bun. Every bite caressed your tastebuds. It was that good! Beautiful bar and dining space. The mgr (11:45 on 8-21) was Friendly, Helpful, and Service-oriented ( asked several times if we wanted water while waiting). Parking is tricky. Park by the Portland Art Museum and walk ( couple blocks and easier to find parking).
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Excellent food. Get there early because they run out quickly. If not, you will be left with the only option that is ever there when I go, and that is a chickpea sandwich. And you don't deserve that.

Julie D.

Yelp
Just had a wonderful lunch at Taylor Street Kitchen -- delicious tuna salad sandwich on yummy bread and a very tasty curried lentil soup. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Wonderful friendlystaff and food, get the rainbow platter. Generous portions. Great everything

Charlotte J.

Yelp
This is truly one of the best restaurants in Portland. I live in Vancouver and my Dentist is in Portland around the corner from this café. I found it by accident and everything that I've gotten here has been tremendous the bread, the soups, the salads, the sandwiches it is a hidden jem. The customer service is awesome and they are just changing up their menu for February. I can't wait.

Aldah M.

Yelp
was on my way to another cafe. saw sign in their window about sustainably raised meats, so stopped in & glad i did. had a large squash bowl & avocado toast on their bread. took a tuna fish sandwich to go. again their bread. everything was delicious. also had chai latte. all that for $33.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious food and service. I'm an out-of-towner who loved the veggie salads, cookie and fabulously frothy cappuccino while sitting street side, as recommended by a local, and now I recommend wholeheartedly.

K. S.

Yelp
5 stars for the food, but.... Please consider your customer's experience. Eating out is about great food, but also great service and customer experience. Your customer's experience could be so much better and you could really shine. Your menu reader board doesn't explain well what items are. Tell me. Let me know via your reader board that a platter is a sandwich and two sides, don't make me ask. Tell me with labels what each of the items in your deli case is, don't make me ask. Tell me about common allergens, don't make me guess. I ordered broccoli salad after your staff described it. Lovely! But it had cashews in it and no nuts were mentioned in the description. I'm not allergic, but my daughter is very allergic. That's dangerous! Basically, make the ordering experience easy for me. And clear. Make it clear. If I have to ask you twenty questions to sort out what I want to order because I can't tell what something is or how it is made or how it is served, it makes me feel bad and it isn't efficient or pleasurable for either of us. You got this! Just a few tweaks and you are 5 stars all the way.

Yelp
This place is to die for! Stumbled upon it while picking up cupcakes at a nearby spot and so glad I decided to go inside. I've been back two times since and everything was outstanding - the tuna sandwich, steak sandwich, all the side dishes... the sourdough and lemon bars - Out of this world!!!

Shelly P.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant with a decent amount of groceries. Never disappointed with anything I've tried here. It's all SO GOOD!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Tried two breads & a banana dessert bread & they were all really really excellent! There are inside & outside tables, too, if you want to order lunch. Service was also excellent.

Sheryl W.

Yelp
The best pizza! Who knew? This is a little bit deli and a little bit grocery convenience. The soups are amazing, the breads and pastries are some of the best, the daily cupcakes are stellar (and I'm not really a cupcake lover) and last night, I had one of the best pizzas I've ever had here in Portland. The asparagus and mushroom on a sourdough crust was so good!!!
google avatar

Ronald W.

Yelp
Wonderful place that offers an amazing selection of delicacies! And the place oozes charm. Just what Downtown Portland needs at this time!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch after a couple of people recommended the place. So happy I did! I had the lunch plate and the bread and salad were beyond tasty. I work around the corner and this place will be on my list of lunch spots.

Martine H.

Yelp
This place! Wow! I was introduced to this little gem of a grocery/deli/pizzeria by a friend this past week. I've been back three times in three days! Some of THE. BEST. FOOD. I have had in Portland recently. It reminds me of how Portland's reputation as a foodie mecca, once so well deserved but has lost it's luster. This place has brought back the shine. Their bread is outstanding. Spectacular ingredients tucked inside said bread to make swoon-worthy sandwiches. A beet salad that I will dream of at night, and I hope never ever goes off the menu. Pillowy crusted pizzas range from the classics to a creamy sauced pie with fresh seasonal veg, drizzled with lemony olive oil. Chef's kiss is all I can say. And their other baked goods--well, I'm afraid to talk about the cookies and scones. Why? Because if you are like me, you will want to go every day, and then... they will run out. The staff are kind and attentive. Just the icing on what is the most lovely dining experience I've had in a very very long time.

Elka G.

Yelp
Great salads! Beautiful store. Bread baked on premises. Welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Katy C.

Yelp
Really really yummy! I got two savory scones and am completely addicted! They have a lot of sandwich and fresh made salads that I will going back to try.
