The Best Irish Food and Drinks in Portland, Oregon and Its Suburbs | Eater Portland

"Thomas Christopher (“T.C.”) O’Leary, who started his career working as an actor on the Irish soap opera Fair City, opened his Alberta Street bar in 2016. O’Leary’s has a traditional Irish pub feel, with a dark wood-heavy, minimalist vibe that serves as the setting for bowls of seafood chowder with house-made soda bread, followed by Guinness brownies with Irish cream drizzle. Irish beers like Guinness, Smithwick’s, and Kilkenny are served on draft, in addition to a good selection of Irish whiskey, Irish coffee, mulled wine, and other cocktails."

Where to Drink a Guinness in Portland | Eater

"Portland isn’t exactly rife with Irish bars, so T.C. O’Leary’s has the corner on that market in the Alberta Arts District. You know you’re getting close when you see the red brick building on the corner, decked out with green Guinness banners and shamrock motifs. Try one of the Irish classics on the menu — think shepherd’s pie or seafood chowder served with soda bread — or opt for the burger topped with bacon jam and arugula." - Krista Garcia

Google
with our any doubt Tom runs the best Irish pub in all of Portland. short of an 8 hour flight you'll find nothing closer to the genuine article. great food, nice Guinness, pure craic.

Google
❤️Slane Irish coffee ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not too sweet - not overly creamy Slane old fashioned ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - little medicinal to me but it was good, it might just be the cherry taste Fish and chips ⭐⭐⭐ - like the fires - good amount of fish inside the brewing - cornmeal breading not beer battered - good flavors Dublin Coddle - appreciated that this one is more flavorful - the bread tasted a little stale to me

Couldn’t have asked for a more convivial and lively evening on a chilly Tuesday— when I walked in around 8:30 pm the weekly women’s trad jam session was in full swing with more than a dozen musicians playing, and the friendly bartenders served me a crisp pint of red ale and a super flavorful seafood chowder with a thick slice of homemade bread. A great place to enjoy a solo night out or hang out with friends! Can’t wait to be back.

Google
This is a fantastic Irish Family owned pub with a decent food menu and lots of drinks, and of course, those cocktail specials. Great live music from local artists, which don't overpower the place. Patio seating front and back, street side has nice covered seating. You have to try to ice cream and whisky special. Lots of Guinness, great pints.

Google
A traditional Irish bar that serves various foods. Spent a few hours here while in town and had a great time. We drank Guinness and shots of Jameson and had some tasty fish and chips. A very cozy comfortable place with a friendly bar tender and good service. Outdoor area with a dart board and covered for cold rainy days. May only complaint is they don't have a waitress and you have to order at the cash register, which isn't a big deal, but it isn't clear to new customers. We had a great time and the food was yummy. Just felt like we were putting the bartender out since we weren't sure how to order. Also, he didn't tell us what to do, just that we had to wait for 10 mins. I would recommend and go back, just know things work a little different here.

Google
Love that this is our neighborhood pub. Everyone is so courteous, the food is great and they have vegan options, and the live music sets it apart. Great beer options too.

Google
Been coming here every Monday for awhile now. Fantastic food, great drink pours and 11/10 service. This is a local spot for a reason. They have great music and board games to play as well.

Google
My rating is a bit biased. I know the owner through my sister. I have been able to learn a bit more of the history of the place. The food is great and the owner takes great care in sourcing his food and drink menu. It is the real deal as real as it gets in Portland for an Irish pub. It has a great cozy atmosphere, great local pub to grab a drink!

Yelp
I feel compelled to state that I generally despise pubs, so I'm more surprised than anybody to find that I actually LOVE T.C. O'Leary's! I came here to see a jazz guitarist and singer perform, and was seated at the tiny two-top table immediately in front of the performing area. This made for a very enjoyable show. The interior is very charming, and feels immediately comforting and "homey". There are few non-alcoholic beverages on offer, consisting of CBD beverages (not interested) and a few non-alcoholic beers. I opted for the latter, and an order of fish and chips. The bartender who took my order and delivered it to my table was extremely friendly and helpful. The fish and chips come in a cone, with the fish on top. The bartender recommended that I take the cone off of the plate, put the fish on the plate, and eat it that way. I'm happy for the recommendation as I'd probably not have thought of that, and it made eating it far easier. The fish and chips were served piping hot, crispy, and deliciously flavorful. Between musician's sets, the owner (Tom O'Leary) plays music over the house speakers, and plays some AMAZINGLY great stuff (I'd never heard Inspiral Carpets in any public establishment anywhere until I came here). I've never been to a pub in Ireland, but if this is what they're like, I TOTALLY get the appeal! T.C. O'Leary's is an awesome pub, and I'm really looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
It's definitely an Irish bar. There was a band playing Irish folk music when I came in. The group looked like a meetup group. If you're looking for an Irish pub ambiance, you'll definitely find it here. Much more intimate than Kells or Thirsty Lions.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years and love this place! Everyone is so friendly, and the food is delicious. My friends and I come for their Irish NYE event which is just so much fun. They also host lots of other cool events. Be sure to look at the neat art they have especially "Phatasmagorical Ireland".

Yelp
Stopped in on a Mon eve. Live music at 8 we heard but we were too tired to stay for it. Order at the bar for cocktails and food. Tell them your table number. We just stayed for one round of drinks...all were very good. Our table had a martini, old fashioned, lemon drop, and butter rum. Also shared the Guinness brownie with ice cream. The brownie was amazing. Not dry, sweet, perfect. Nice spot to dip in for a bit. Friendly environment!

Yelp
My boyfriend picked up a dry burger for me on his way home yesterday at around 4:30. This is definitely NOT medium, it was so raw in the middle that the guy who eats everything, my boyfriend, wouldn't even touch it. I called and left a polite voicemail and still haven't heard back... Edit for update: Heard back and the customer service was above and beyond! Our remade burgers were so good we ate them too fast to get a picture! Highly recommend them!

Yelp
Sunday late afternoon wonderful music, great food and nice people. Aidan and Jared at the bar were a highlight! TC is a treasure too. I had a special drink (recommended by Aidan) Sidka Smash (sp?) It was a Basque cider, elderflower liquor and pineapple and shaken and over ice, just delicious. I smile!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! We were enjoying the Final Thursday in the Alberta and stumbled upon this gem. The husband and I split the fish and chips. Perfecto! Lightly breaded. Not greasy. The chips were tasty too. So many food items to explore on this menu so we'll be back. Btw. Friendly wait staff. Your choice of indoor/outdoor dining.

Matt L.

Yelp
Great Irish bar and friendly staff. The fish and chips are delicious and the shepherds pie is great on a cold day. I've been there a few times and the local crowd and music is awesome. Slāinte!
google avatar

Jodi M.

Yelp
I've been several times and can guarantee a friendly local pub with warm smiles hearty food and live music. If you're looking for craic look no further.

Chris L.

Yelp
Enjoy this authentic Irish pub while ye may, or if you don't, you're feckin' ejiots! They now have soft serve ice cream with Cadbury flake chocolate!!! MMMMMM
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Irish Pub across the street from Alberta Rose Theatre. Craft beer draft selection is great. Food offerings are upscale pub fare. Bar/table service is speedy. The size of the pub lends itself to small gatherings of 4 or fewer.

Yelp
Felt safer here than anywhere I've been (other than home) since the pandemic. You only get inside with proof of vaccination- and THAT is how you take care of your patrons (and staff!) Not to mention fantastic music, authentic fish and chips, great dessert, huge Whisky wall.... Can't go wrong. Glad we came here for the Solstice. And we'll be back. Because they care.

Joel O.

Yelp
Great service by Shannon... I was on vacation from San Diego to see my daughter and her wife as well as my niece and her husband and extended family!. My only gripe( and it's small ), was no beanie-sweat shirts - etc to remember my trip. Loved the vibe, as man who has been to Ireland and has family there. I know what to look for My Dad's parents came over on the same boat from Ireland - but didn't know each other until they got to the USA . Both were from Connemara & Ballyconneely

Yelp
This place is great. I know, probably everybody says that, but seriously. They've got real (European formula) Guinness on tap, the food is all delicious, and they're staffed with some of the friendliest people in town! I'd had this place on my list for quite a while prior to the pandemic (I walked by right before they opened) and only ould make my way here post-pandemic reopening. Those summer months were a little rough, as they were understaffed (I was told the owner was actually doing all the cooking) so the menu had been cut way down, but everything was as delicious then as it is now. Last night (a Wednesday) a friend and I popped in around 530pm for a bite and a pint. Between the two of us, we ordered the steak frites special, the brussel sprouts special, a shepherd's pie, and an order of seafood chowder to go (served cold to be reheated at home), plus two pints of Guinness. Everything was delicious! The steak super tender and perfectly done to medium-rare, the sprouts were crunchy and not soggy like a lit of other places end up, and the pie was great too! The outdoor seating in front is one of those shed things in the street parking spaces that most restaurants have, but they've put one of those fancy flame tower heaters in it so it's nice and cozy. When the weather is better they have seating in the alley and out back. Indoors they also have a sort of closed off booth area for larger groups.

Kerry M.

Yelp
They have a gluten free fryer! You can even get gluten free fish and chips! Tables are small though.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
What a great Irish pub! Was not expecting to find such a gem on Alberta but so happy I did. Looking forward to catching some rugby while sipping a good Irish whiskey or beer staff are super nice and work hard to keep things moving.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
This place is a great spot if you are looking for a cool little Irish pub! The bartender was really friendly and answered all of our questions about the menu. We ordered the Fish & Chips and they did not disappoint. It's a cute little space with tables big enough for groups and some smaller ones for couples or single diners. They had TVs playing sports, but we came to just hang out and people watch. I will be back for sure!
google avatar

Julianne V.

Yelp
Great vibes! For sit-down dining/drinking, you order online and they bring it to your table. The online menu comes with a surprisingly helpful YouTube tutorial. We came on a weekend, sat in their side alley seating for a good view of the (excellent) live music. There's also outdoor dining out in front of the space. I got the Irish Setter cocktail which tasted like a liquefied lemon cough drop. I liked it; it was both refreshing and warming (from the ginger).

Liam F.

Yelp
T.C.'s is a genuine Irish pub. A great pint of Guinness and excellent pub food available all day. It takes a lot to make a pub special and TC's has that welcoming feeling which is a credit to the management and staff. There's something for everyone here with. live music, literary groups, and many Irish culture and language activities. I have not even touched on the Irish whiskey selection. It's a little piece or Ireland on holiday.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
Classic east coast Irish pub that we just don't have in Portland. Quick and friendly staff. Good selection of favorites. Great whiskey selection. And some good old fashion classic beers.

Sabrina E.

Yelp
Damn, I forgot pictures of this pathetic mess of frozen food that you will pay a premium price for. The fish had no flavor-just some over fried batter. it was still cold in the middle! And then the chips...what to say...Limp, limp. limp. Horrible food and don't give me your story of only one cook. Just hire a good cook or don't serve food.
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it's now one of my favorite Irish pubs. The Shepherd's Pie is terrific. And they pour a perfect pint of Guinness (check my photos). Top it off with a glass of Jameson and that rounds out a very enjoyable evening in NE. I especially enjoy the tables outside.
google avatar

Stella C.

Yelp
Best fish and chips ever! And amazing butternut squash soup. Awesome service. And a fine mule to boot.
google avatar

Jacqueline J.

Yelp
We dined here last night and enjoyed our fish and chips very much! The fish was good size portions and the hand cut fries were amazing! Yummy fresh tarter and I really appreciated the gluten-free option, best gf fish and chips I've ever had. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Having been to countless Irish pubs and other 'hibernophenic' (just trust me, it's a legit word...) haunts across the country, this establishment is perhaps the only one I've been to which can (with only a little alcohol) induce and invoke images/imagery of what it might be like to be at an authentic, real Irish pub in the middle of Dublin (despite never having been there or anywhere else on the Emerald Isle). The food is mediocre (but seriously, how often does one rave about exceptional Irish cuisine?!?) at best, and I'm not thrilled with their IPA selection, but just a few sips of their Bobby Burns cocktail is enough to give me hallucinations of becoming the next Joyce or Beckett or Yeats...or just scribble a harp & shamrock along with "Erin Go Bragh" and a map of Ireland on the back of a napkin or receipt (god I miss the days of paper receipts). But seriously, this place with all its decor and offerings (such as Celtic fiddle musicians every Sunday) is great.

Nancy O.

Yelp
Went there March 16th for some Irish music. We reserved the snug and had a great time! The beer was good, the fish and chips were good too. We first ordered at the bar and then, from the snug, kept getting refills and they kept in top of the drinks. Good service! Hope to go back again!
google avatar

Rebecca G.

Yelp
Fish and chips were not terrible but not not spectacular. Got takeout. I'd love to come back and linger because it seems like a great atmosphere.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Tom O'Leary brings a bit of Dublin to Alberta. It is a great neighborhood pub. The night I was there, he recommended and poured some great Irish Whiskey, excellent stuff you just don't find elsewhere. (Keep your snobby whiskey library; give me an Irish Pub run by an Irishman.)
google avatar

Kai E.

Yelp
I wanted to give a shout out to Corey behind the bar! My friends & I popped into TC O'Leary's by chance on a muggy, rainy day to escape the weather. We got prime seats by the windows up front & had a few beers but the highlight of the visit was Corey's charisma and jokes. He made us laugh, brought us chocolate, and was an all-around good time. Thank you Corey!
google avatar

Norah B.

Yelp
Ordered shepherds pie to go. Expected $12 a pie. Got there and it was $14 a pie. $42 for three. Came in very small box filled 1/3 full. It's an appetizer. I've been here before. Not sure if this is a covid thing or not but I won't be back for takeout. Service was nice though.
google avatar

Aliska S.

Yelp
The staff are very nice; pleasant environment and tasty food. The only point I would make is the prices are way too high for the portion size and this type of restaurant. We were both still hungry afterwards.

Alicia A.

Yelp
The food was disappointing. The fish and chips were OK and my partner got a fish sandwich that was dry and seemed to have none of the ingredients it said came on the sandwich. Was hoping for some good Irish based food. Cool place, good atmosphere. Would probably come back for a drink but not to eat.

teresa m.

Yelp
masked up we returned with a friend for dinner inside on a cool rainy evening.....i had a rainier, and my partner had a cocktail, plus our friend had the mulled wine....i felt comfortable taking my mask off....next, we shared the smoked salmon salad, and at happy hr, the grilled cheese and potato skin crisps...our friend had the burger/fries...the food was superb, esp the salad and grilled cheese......we love coming here for the cozy atmosphere, drinks, and food...the staff is always wonderful, the two women behind the bar are fabulous...thx so much..
google avatar

Food G.

Yelp
Mediocre fish and chips. Lackluster service, oh how I long for the days when this was once branch whiskey bar. I ordered fish and chips they arrived burned I got a replacement order in and looked exactly the same. Word to the wise look elsewhere for excellent fish and chips.
google avatar

Sannalee S.

Yelp
I got married in Ireland... I know a wee bit about Irish food! TC O'Leary's - BEST Irish Pub food I've ever enjoyed. Amazing cocktails, proprietor and crew, and SUCH great music and heart-felt community vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
BEAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! My background is in customer service and this being my husband and two little kids first time here was a memorable experience and we will definitely be back! We came here to kick off our Christmas vacation from work and heard great stuff about the music that is offered every Monday. But tonight was a holiday mix, which drew us here even more with the little ones. There was no table available, but a few tables that had those sitting there spread out but wouldn't make room/share their space. Long story short, when I made a lap to see if there was any space towards the back of the restaurant to squeeze us in, the owner got my attention and was able to pull two tables and asked current tables to make space and got us a table!!!! The owner here went above and beyond and I am very grateful for business owners like him. We will be back and thank you for being kid friendly and even having games for my little ones to play! Merry Christmas!
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
This establishment is pretty fantastic. To the mirror behind your liquor selection to the detail-mindedness in the bathrooms you will find yourself right at home at T.C. O'Learys. Ever changing specials, Guinness on tap and entertaining live music including a fiddler! You'll find it here. The fish and chips are delicious. Their Shepard's Pie is delectable and the service is outstanding. It is nice to know that you aren't just a customer here, this is your friends and family.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great Irish Coffee and a great oint of Guinness on a Friday night. They also had some great live music. Great atmosphere as well. I really enjoyed the cheese board recommended by the bartender.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
This place has really great food! The fish and chips are delicious but it's the shepherds pie that keeps me coming back! And Tom, the owner, is a charming guy who always makes us feel welcome!
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
My family and I went in this past Friday, it was an awesome spot to grab food and have a couple of drinks. we had a variety of food and they were all a 10/10!!! The drinks were awesome too & they have a HUGE selection of whiskey. Angela helped out my party of 12 & was so awesome! The live music was so great & our favorite song is now "dirty old town" :) Thanks for an unforgettable time!!! Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
I'm not sure what the food is like. The atmosphere is lacking a good flow upon entering but nice and comfy once you're saddled up at the bar. If you can get the attention of the young male bartender (in our case). The service was terrible. The bartender gave us our check before we got our drinks. Why in such a hurry? We also wanted food. Then he got upset that he had to add food after he gave us our bill (that we never asked for!) I wanted to leave after that but we started chatting with a stranger at the bar. The stranger offered to by us drinks and ordered them. Then the bartender cut us off! Why? That was unnecessary. Suffice it to say, we settled up and left after that.

Yelp
Had an absolutely wonderful time here on 2 separate nights over St Patty's Day. The service was prompt, the food was delicious, and the Guinness pours just kept coming! My first visit was a Thursday night. The place was completely packed with some live Irish music going on. I managed to grab the last spot at the bar and ordered a burger and chips. The meat was juicy and the chips were cooked perfectly (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside). The music was great and pretty soon the whole pub was singing along to Irish drinking songs. As a side note, they serve Guinness in 20 oz pours (a UK pint) and they pour them very well! I went to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin a couple months ago and can confirm proper technique (I have never written something more snobby in my life, lol). On Saturday night, we closed out the night here. They gave us pins for staying past midnight and kept the beers pouring cold and fast through the night. When a place is slammed, you really can't ask for more than that!
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Had such a nice time here. Came for dinner and live music. Very friendly staff. Great mix of people of all ages. The shepherd's fries were delicious and came very quickly. Love the curry sauce. I noticed on my way out there was a stack of board games near the restrooms. Next time I'll have to sit and play some games. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jenna A.

Yelp
Finally made my way here during Happy Hour. Spent a very pleasant evening enjoying a pint of Guinness, Smithwicks and half-order of fish and chips. Delicious. Service - very good. Prices - excellent. Reminded me very much of Ireland. Intend to come back for the Irish breakfast during brunch.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
First time to Portland, checked in to our ABNB, then went to get a bite to eat. Stopped at O'Leary's, looked over the menu and both of us opted for the Fish n Chips. Holy Taste Buds! Both, Ren & I said it's the best fish & chips we ever had. The fish is a large serving of haddock, with a breading that doesn't need any tartar sauce. But, being from WI I had to dip, easily the best tartar sauce I've ever had too. And... The chips were delicious too! Great job TC O'Leary's, when we're in town again, we'll be back!!!
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
Great food, drinks and wonderful atmosphere. I had the fish and chips and they were delicious. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Susan W.

Yelp
I got a Pog Mo bowl and brussel sprouts for takeout. Not terribly impressed. The bowl was just okay. The flavor was rather bland and uninspired, the rice was undercooked. None of the ingredients stood out and the curry sauce was meh. The brussel sprouts were okay but the Guinness reduction sauce was more vinegary than I care for. Hopefully other menu items are better. Maybe I'll try this place again, maybe not.
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
After posting my review the other co-owner contacted me via yelp and said they would refund the cost of the meal. I appreciate that but I wish that had happened when I asked before our food was even made.
google avatar

Frances M.

Yelp
The pub was filled with a crying and screaming children. Why on earth would you bring your child to a pub. Our meal was basically ruined by the atmosphere, what a shame. We won't be back.
