New Orleans’ Best Classic Burgers | Eater New Orleans

"No question what this Uptown drive-in specializes in, with its landmark giant root beer mug, cold brewed and foamy since 1952. Enjoy a mug paired with a “lot-o-burger,” single or double. The menu features a slew of classic diner options, but the burger paired with crinkle-cut fries and a root beer is a sure bet for lunch. Best for: A root beer float with a griddled burger" - Beth D’Addono

New Orleans’s Most Iconic Diners | Eater New Orleans

"S. Claiborne’s old-school greasy spoon opened in 1955, and today still retains kitschy icon status thanks in part to its huge root beer float-shaped sign. The menu features a slew of breakfast options, po’ boys, and lunch plate specials Monday through Friday, like red beans and rice on Monday, white beans with a choice of fried or grilled chicken, pork chop, or smoked sausage on Thursday, and crawfish etouffee with fried catfish on Friday. Still, the classic lunch order is a famous Lot-O Burger and a root beer float — Frostop brews its own root beer." - Eater Staff

Where To Eat New Orleans’ Best Hot Dogs | Eater New Orleans

"Ted’s Frostop is an Uptown institution, serving old school diner faves like burgers, malts, all-you-can-eat pancakes, and of course hot dogs. Have one with a root beer float and you can practically feel yourself time warp to the 50s. Open 7 days a week." - Gwendolyn Knapp

Google
It's been YEARS since I've had Frostop. I've been scoping this location for a while now, and I finally decided to stop in. It was nice to see it still has that old diner style. It was very clean with a relaxing atmosphere! I got the Lot-O-Burger with cheese, and it was super delicious!!!! It still has that old-fashioned burger taste. Something that's hard to find these days. Some of the newer, more modern burger joints are good, but none of them comes close to the taste of the old-fashioned ones!! It's like no other. The fries were good and seasoned well. Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious!!

Google
I loved it. The atmosphere was like a old hamburger stand. The 60s music that was playing was amazing. the hamburger and fries were excellent. The root beer floats are delicious.

Disgusted. Unfortunately there is no easy way to write that I was poorly treated simply based on my appearance. The lady at the counter treated us very poorly, acted like it was inconvenience for us to be there. Our root beer floats did not come in a nice cold mug, the root beer was nothing special, and about 2 more inches could have gone in the paper cup. The next customer the employee interacted with was not the same appearance as me and they were greeted with smiles and the employee was very nice to them. I find this disgusting especially as I am wearing clothing that clearly identified me as a US Military Combat Veteran. This is horrendous behavior and we were very disappointed. We made a special trip from the French quarter to eat at this “iconic” place. Never again, absolutely furious by how we were treated and the food wasn’t special either and the parking is a disaster to get into. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

Google
Every time we are in NOLA, we drive by, and it's always closed. The towering float always beckons me. The burgers are good, the onion rings are crispy, the floats, shakes, malts, & fries are exactly as they should be - tasty!! The service was fantastic! I told the cashier it was our first time in, and she was super helpful! We'll be back. 🤗

Google
Every college/university has a reasonably priced burger spot close by. This is one for Tulane Universit according to our son. I did not have the burger today, but the egg bowl with chicken, potatoes, and cheese was really good. The biscuit was buttery and perfect. I tasted my husband's pancakes, and they were good, too. Our son had French toast sticks and bacon.

To the owner, you need to be involved and love your business or you're going to find it's not going to turn out well. My wife, baby, and I waited an hour exactly for a burger and a grilled cheese. Guests very were mad for that entire hour. There were probably only 20 to 25 people total in the space. The kitchen appears to struggle with even very light business. There were about 2 to 3 people in the kitchen throughout my time there and it seemed disorganized and inefficient especially for such a small amount of business. I'm guessing there could be an equipment issue of some kind that's exacerbating service delays. The bathroom was also out of paper towels and toilet paper. This sort of state and experience typically points to a struggling business on its way out or disengaged management and ownership. Someone was coming around wiping tables and that was nice, but there was no engagement with customers on experience. Paying $25+ and waiting an hour for what should have been pretty breezy experience was not great. If the patties are too thick and slowing down cook times significantly (my patty was about 1.5inches thick). Likely prep should change to help this along. Sorry for the lengthy review. I really like this place but seeing this kind of execution was painful. I have also worked in the service industry for quite some time predominantly in kitchens. I hope that you all get better and this place rises to the occasion as the go to local burger spot it should be.

Google
Though the food and vanilla malt i got was good, the Lot-o-Burger was anything but a lot. I have been to other Frostops locally, and their Lot-o-Burgers were TWICE the size of this one. It tasted fine, but for the price now being charged, you should get the same size burger you used to. The vanilla malt was okay. It was thick but was quite icy instead of creamy. I did not get their root beer (which at other locations was outstanding) because I didn't want to be disappointed. The service was great and it had the feel of a 60s diner, just a little rundown. Overall it was a pleasant visit, just not one worthwhile.

Google
The older lady with missing teeth that took our order was very disrespectful to us. We were going to order milkshakes and she said “no milkshakes.” I said oh, she said “machines broke, you can see it.” I said I guess we will have a root beer float then. She seemed quite annoyed to have to wait on us. If I had it to do over, I would have walked out then. She was extremely rude and the root beer floats sucked. We traveled a great distance to come to the establishment. I will NEVER return and would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Absolutely no call for the disrespect. The parking lot was a disaster as well. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED.

Yelp
What a fun place! Ted's caught my eye yesterday when I was driving by and I knew I had to stop in. I'm so glad I did. Ted's Frostop opened in 1955 by Ted Sternberg when he returned home after the Korean War. It is a classic 50's drive-in. When you pull-in you feel like you've been transported back in time. If this isn't a national landmark - it should be. They offer a nice variety of food for breakfast and lunch. Burgers and Po' Boys are popular items. I strongly encourage you to get the Root beer Float. It is delicious! Service is friendly, and prices are reasonable. I can't wait for my next visit.

Yelp
Discovered Ted's via the movie The Hit Man, decided to go. Food was great, big burgers, generous portions and our gal that took our order was spectacular! The Root beer float is a must!
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Teds is one of our daily breakfast spots. The employees remember us and always treat us like family. I tried a turkey club (off the menu item) and it was yummy! The fries at Ted's are so dang good I find myself craving them over pancakes on some Sunday mornings.

Yelp
Root Beer lovers, are you looking for an original American diner? This is it. Make sure you have the root beer, it is as good as they say! Angus Burger, Chicken Strip Basket, Roast Beef and lots of Root Beer. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Geoff M.

Yelp
Solid burger joint with great root beer. Big picture--it's a busy location so you may need to wait for a table inside, but on nice days you can sit outside.
google avatar

Vincent X.

Yelp
Wonderful diner served with an amazing smile once you walk in. The food was not dry at all and the fries were sooo CRISPY. The milkshake was one of the best ones I have had in a while. The environment is warm and welcoming and it feels like all are welcomed.

Yelp
I turned the corner near where I'm staying this weekend in the historic Broadmoor neighborhood in New Orleans, and came upon Ted's Frosto. I absolutely love going to vintage diners and burger places, so I couldn't resist stopping. I am so glad that we did. I ordered the Double Lot-O Burger, fully dressed! OMG, very well prepared and absolutely delicious and the homemade root beer, which had a huge frothy head and wonderful flavor. I will stop in several more times before we leave town. On your next visit to New Orleans (aka NOLA), this is a MUST stop!!

Yelp
A group of us came in and ordered some sandwiches, fries and drinks. We have a large party so we are sitting at 2 tables. An employee came up to one of our tables and told us that we couldn't be sitting at the table if we were waiting for the restaurant down the street. No one ever said that we were waiting for that restaurant. We are though...BUT we still spent money here. Also, our food had not (and still has not as I write this) come out. There were no folks in line waiting for a seat, they weren't busy, why are y'all asking about us about occupying a table when we don't have our food yet??? So rude and unprofessional. Will NOT return (but I will admit that the fries are decent, shout-out to the cook NOT the woman who approached us). Being profiled by your own is CRAZY. Do better.

Yelp
This place is okay for what it is - a greasy burger joint with really cool old pinball machines. We visited after 1 on a weekday. We tried to order and were told that they were out of ALL sides, the daily special, and lettuce. So we ordered a hamburger, a chicken sandwich, and a shake. They were evidently also out of root beer at the soda fountain (which we found out when my nephew tried to get his drink.) The server acted like I was over the top for ordering a vanilla shake. The chicken sandwich was slightly burned, but I ate it because I was hungry. We were also told that your only hope for getting the daily special is to get there within the first 30 minutes of lunch (I was laughed at for even asking for the daily special after 1 pm). The tables and everything on the tables was sticky and not clean. If you want some diner food with a serious portion of attitude, this is your place.
google avatar

Cindy G.

Yelp
Old school charm with delicious food. We frequent the breakfast mostly. The pancakes are wonderful and there are breakfast poboys. We also love their burgers. The place is always clean and the pinball and Pac-Man machines are free and my grandkids love them.

Yelp
Stopped in the other day for breakfast and it brought back a lot of nostalgic memories. I can't believe Frostop is still standing amidst the pandemic. Service was outstanding. The cashier/host was professional, personable, attentive and made us feel at home. She even came from behind the counter to our table to hand me a replacement pepper shaker because she saw me struggling to get pepper out of the shaker we had. We ordered shrimp and grits and two orders of pancakes and bacon. Hats off to the chef, this short, middle-age, black lady hovering over the grill. The shrimp and grits were well-seasoned and hit the spot. The accompanying buttermilk biscuit was buttery and oh so fluffy and moist. I'm getting a breakfast biscuit next time! My family enjoyed their fluffy pancakes. I had a bite of the bacon and it was crispy and flavorful. The restaurant was clean and not too dated. We got there just in time because the breakfast crowd--service workers, first responders, retirees--started to pour in shortly after we ordered and the line had reached the door. We should be intentional about visiting regularly.

Yelp
For the nostalgia, perfection! Root beer is delicious! Lotaburger dressed was good. And thank you to the great team working there serving up tasty food.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
A classic diner with excellent food that is a permanent favorite of ours. The burgers are awesome, the root beer obviously a huge fan favorite, and, heck, I'm even a fan if their chicken sandwich!

Michael F.

Yelp
Good burger place. I can't stand Yelp's Orwellian insistence on forcing 85 characters out of me "for the good of the community ".
google avatar

Robby S.

Yelp
A legendary burger joints across from Tulane university that has incredible burgers and fries in the best, name steak root beer... Ted's Frostop which is incredible. Take you up a Lotta burger and fries and don't forget the root beer but you also can't go wrong with the milkshakes.!

Austin T.

Yelp
When I went to order, our food took over 40 minutes, which would be usually fine. When we brought this up to the cashier (who had still not given us our food), she gave us an attitude, and didn't resolve any of our issues. We ordered at 1:50, and at the time I'm writing this (2:43) we have still not received our food or our root beer floats. I work in the service industry and I understand wait times, but this is just abysmal service. The lady at the front was very rude and doesn't know how to talk to people.

Darlene G.

Yelp
Our hamburger was OUTSTANDING! Fries excellent and the root beer was AMAZING! The young lady who took our order was Sherry. And she was absolutely AMAZING TOO! Very friendly and the nicest smile.

David B.

Yelp
Classic place! Friendly staff! Good Food! Enjoyed every bite and we will definitely go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great reliable breakfast. Friendly staff. I always look forward to going. My go to spot, especially now that Trolley Stop is no longer.

Yelp
So Ted's Frostop has been chugging along for several years since my last review and they seemed to have improved a lot of the challenges they were dealing with for so many years. The front of house service has improved for putting your order in but they really have gotten to maintaining consistently inconsistent hours and often just close early from what their posted hours are. They seem to have gotten more popular for their breakfast and still get a decent lunch crowd while they just close before dinner really even gets started. Their root beer mugs are now plastic instead of glass so at least they have mugs and the original recipe Frostop root beer back but it is so much better in a glass frosted mug than a plastic one. Their Loto Burger are up to where they need to be and are good now while their roast beef po boy is really a disappointment for the price and the one I was served had stale poboy bread so there are plenty of much better poboys for the price in the area. Speaking of prices those have REALLY gone up and the price of a meal combo here can get you a meal in a regular restaurant and many other fast food joints are not too far behind these days so really you can go to a full service restaurant for what you get here so that price inflation can't be good for business (with all the crazy property tax increases and COVID-19 requirements eating into profits the prices are likely to just keep going up to make it so fewer and fewer folks can even afford the city anymore). I hope they continue with their improvements and keep this place the classic place it should be but I have my fears about the direction prices are going and how anything (or most folks) will be able to ride out the inflation on so many things while at the same time so many folks are making less money or no money because of the COVID-19 situation. My restaurant review video of Ted's Frostop is here: https://youtu.be/RZ4majqABqY

Anthony M.

Yelp
Really great diner style burger joint. The food is great, however you need to plan on waiting a little while as they are always busy. Breakfast here is awesome, and lunch is great too!
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Always a good idea to stop in and grab something to eat food is fresh and the root beer Forget about it good service good food good people good time
google avatar

Santos M.

Yelp
Took 1 hour to make tenders and a burger. Also people behind us got the food before us like how we order before them and got the same plates they gotten.

Joe V.

Yelp
Quality breakfast at a very reasonable price. Eggs, bacon, grits, are good. If in the mood for a burger, the lotto burger is also tasty.
google avatar

Miranda A.

Yelp
1 star because I asked for my burger to be sent back since it was still practically raw & not how I asked for it to be cooked. The manager (Ed) didn't make the situation any better and was rude saying my burger wouldn't be remade.
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
The best pancakes I've truly ever had. Classic diner look - feels very homey. Delicious
google avatar

Akilah S.

Yelp
This is my first time eating at Ted's. I sit at a table and the bus guy told me you had to order at the Front counter top so I did. Larry the bus guy was really nice. I notice he was talking to me but there was a tree that stayed on the table my friend who is with me is a service so he just did a kayak and removed from our table and put it where I belong. I also noticed a lady at another table had to put up her own tree as well. The breakfast was really simple and basic nothing special. I'm willing to check out there bro this is my friend told me they have great burgers. I like the fact that it did have a true diner feel from the music and the decour.

David J.

Yelp
Omg! Today was our first but most definitely wasn't our last trip to Frostop. The food was amazing the service was top of the line. The young lady named Jerri if I'm not mistaken took excellent care of us. She most definitely made Frostop feel like a second home! I love how she remembers everyone by name even myself! The cooks did an excellent job cooking the food. I've had burgers but none comes close to Frostop's.Burgers tasted just like my grandmas! Keep up the great work Frostop. We'll be seeing you all real soon.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Iconic and great neighborhood eatery. Had the double burger and fries and milk shake. So good. Perfect combination! Try to get by there when I am in that side of town. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Barbara W.

Yelp
Oh yeah my at the register was so friendly man made you forget that it was busy I come with family and friends evertime am in town best breakfast and burgers ever This is the best part about visiting new Orleans Am not sure if the guy at the register was the owner but very sweet

Lyla K.

Yelp
The best pancakes I have ever had. Truly. Mouth watering pancakes. Be warned there's always a slow but short line at breakfast time on weekends. But the pancakes make up for it. get the pancakes. trust me.
google avatar

Astrya J.

Yelp
Great customer service! Burgers and fries were hot and fresh and prepared quickly. Very lovely vintage style diner. We will definitely return again.

David G.

Yelp
Best pancakes and best root beer in the city. The hamburgers are also really good, but if you want breakfast this is the place to go.

Omni A.

Yelp
Paid $25 for two burgers two medium fries and two drinks, Not worth it. Over-priced, and not really worth it.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
If you plan on going to a fast food joint for a kid's meal, don't. Frostop has great deals on kids combos, with free drink AND ice cream. The burgers are as good as any diner, and the fries are great too. All the arcade games are free, so expect your kids to have a much better time and meal than they would at McDonalds.
google avatar

Lauren V.

Yelp
Best bacon cheeseburger in town! I don't get anything else!! If you add fries it's a little pricy but it's so good I don't care. Make sure to get their root beer too!
google avatar

Sherri B.

Yelp
Step back in time to enjoy a Burger, Shake and some onion rings! Don't forget to treat yourself to a Frostop Root beer! Retro decor, booths, free video games for the kids. You just can't beat it! So happy we decided to give it a try! The entire neighborhood raves about it. But you gotta make sure to get there during operating hours, they close early. We will be back!
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
A POTEMKIN VILLAGE Sure the front of the store is intriguingly retro and the post-Katrina image of the upside-down root beer mug is legendary but the food just doesn't measure up, especially at the price point. For example: a humdrum Double Lot-O-Burger (1/2 LB?) with cheese, fries and a drink costs $13.78 before tax. Nyet! The same meal at Fharmacy, arguably the best joint in town because from the meat to the condiments everything is House prepared, totals $12.50. And my $10 salty chicken breakfast bowl with a cold drink (pic) was mostly soggy skillet potatoes. EVEN THAT LUSTY CZARINA WOULDN'T BE FOOLED She'd be down the block getting a much tastier double #4 with sauce and onions, fries and a drink for $9!
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Wouldn't change a thing! I agree that this is more a place of nostalgia than anything, but the cheeseburger was exactly what I had hoped for, as were the crinkle cut fries. It is nothing fancy, but the rootbeer is great, and the food is served at the right speed. Very casual, and a great place to bring kids after school, as seemed to be the norm when I was there around 4:00 PM.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Always a great stop for anything on the menu. Still a great old school spot that I love coming to with my honey. Everything is cooked fresh, and it's so fast. No reason to eat "fast food" when you can just stop here! The shrimp poyboy is my favorite option for regular menu and the shrimp and grits is my favorite option for breakfast. Best part: Service is top notch because they really care here. Second best part: mugs for root beer.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is vintage diner all the way. Loved the atmosphere. The people working there were very kind. The locals arriving, the banter back and forth was just fun to watch. I love down home local spots and this is just the place. I was visiting from California and this is my first trip to New Orleans and Teds was recommended by a local so we checked it out. Food was good. Typical diner food. But what made this place for me was the atmosphere. Good food. Great people and a trip down memory lane.
google avatar

Jacob G.

Yelp
Burgers were spot on. Straight up old school flat top burger. Crisp lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard and onions. Bunny brand bun. Fries cooked and seasoned perfectly. Burgers were absolutely perfect. Customer service? Excellent. Everyone working hard with the exception of one guy in the NY Mets hat. He just seemed to stand around the whole time at least for the 30 minutes We were there. No big deal. Anyways shakes were great. The only thing I wished they had were more sanitizer for hands, cleaning policy for their ketchup bottles and condiments. The girls at the register were bubbly and kind. Place was clean for the most part.just a little messy near soda station but that's expected in the middle of lunch rush near a college. They aren't using any fancy tricks just straight up food served hot n fresh. I have yet to make it in time for breakfast but they have a bold statement on their sign out front saying "best pancake in New Orleans". So guess what fools??? I'll be making my way back this week to test that out. As a profesional chef of 23 years I am very hard to impress so we will see. I also wonder how their ribeye and eggs are along with their home fries but I'm fixin to find out in the next couple days. See y'all real soon. Came two days in a row and both times food was spot on. They also have a daily meal special. Today was red beans and rice with your choice of pork chop, sausage, chicken tender grilled or fried or one other option. Comes with a side salad for $8.95. Drink not included but still a heck of a deal. Good job. I'll be back. If those pancakes are straight fire I will only come for the burgers but still worth it.

Yelp
Last month, I was running errands along Claiborne Ave and decided I deserved a Frostop breakfast. So I ordered and sat down, after a moment the counter person said that they had stopped serving breakfast...less than 30 minutes ago. So much confusion ensued since I thought they served breakfast whenever they were open and the answer was the used to and they would be doing so again soon...and they just gave me my breakfast. So all's well that ends well. My breakfast was like $3 and totally filling and tasty. Plus I got to hangout and watch an old guy relishing a frosty mug of root beer while playing a old school mechanical pinball machine with actual bells and other analog noises. Good times.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Great people good food. You can't go wrong. Get a burger and a root beer, its the perfect combination.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
I like it. Plain n' simple. My brother-in-law isn't a fan - but I am. Came three times (two breakfasts - one lunch) and each time was solid by me. Give it a shot. At first appearance, it's for show. But then you quickly realize it's not.
google avatar

Patricia C.

Yelp
Breakfast was great! Hubby has eggs sausage and potatoes. I Had eggs shrimp and grits which were pretty yummy. We could not eat all our portions. Ambiance is very 1960's burger joint decor. Great to bring kids as they hVe some vintage type pinball machines
google avatar

Yelp
omg I love this place!! theyre down the street from me and they were actually open on Lundi Gras/Presidents Day while it was freezing/raining. Not only was it really not even crowded but the staff was oh so very very polite!! They have hands down The Best chocolate and strawberry milkshakes and RB floats. today I got the chicken strip basket w fries. omg it was so good I usually don't even eat food like that but it was soo good and fresh and hotI highly recommend this place to anyone w great taste and a great appetite!! it even has that old timey diner feel to it!!
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
These people should close with the sorry attitude they have. The food is mediocre. I've tried eating here for years and every time I go back I find the attitude is so bad. They act as if you are doing them a favor doing business with them. Don't bother if I could give them negative I would. Oh btw if you are a regular you might get better service. Maybe.

Sarah T.

Yelp
Really nice staff.. reminds you of "old times". Very clean. Offers lunches, red beans, salads, chicken tenders, sausage and fried shrimp poboys
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Only reason I came was because my friends dragged me here. Didn't go in with great expectations and my prediction was correct. I imagined a sit-down diner, but instead it's basically a few breakfast items and burgers. The pancakes looked tasty, but I went for the burger and onion rings as most people recommend that on Yelp. Unfortunately, neither item was good. The grilled onions on my burger were abysmal and I ended up removing them all. The burger itself was just okay, bun was hella soggy. The onion rings tasted like your standard frozen onion rings. The only decent item was the milkshake. The service itself was also fine. The biggest issue is that I'm writing this review on the toilet as my stomach suffers the agony of the grease piled onto my burger. On to the next!
