10 Best Restaurants in Buffalo, NY and What to Eat There - AFAR

"Hot dogs are charcoal-grilled to order—hissing and snapping on the grill—resulting in browned, boudin-like links nestled in soft, springy rolls and typically dressed with 'the works.' Locals recommend minced onions, yellow mustard, and the house hot sauce, and pairing the dog with hand-battered onion rings or a loganberry milkshake is a true local move." - Arthur Bovino

I arrived around 2:15 on a Saturday afternoon, and the line was nearly out the door. After about a 45-minute wait, we finally got our food and it was well worth it. The wait times can be hit or miss, but the service is always courteous. The menu offers a great variety: hot dogs, brats, burgers, chicken, gluten-free options, fries, onion rings, and even shakes. Be sure to grab some of their takeaway sauces and don’t skip the vinegar for the fries!

Google
ive probably passed this place and million times and never went in until now. food was great all good pricing except the cheese fries price was a bit wild. super nice staff and good rewards program. if you are plus sized though be conscious. the seats are SUPER narrow and not adjustable at all. they have chairs but only 1 side chair other side a bench so that was a bit disappointing. saw many other groups of people doing the same trying to go to the one with both. Still a great experience!

Google
Excellent charcoal broiled hot dogs/hamburgers cooked right in front of you. Best home-made onion rings and chili/cheese fries. This is the same owner as the original one in Buffalo, NY. This is the best hot dog you can get in Arizona!! TY Ted!!!!

Google
Fun spot if you're in Tempe and you like hot dogs. Or if you're in Tempe, and you don't like hot dogs, but you've only ever tried them from your best friend's fridge and they were pulled from a generic label plastic bag cut open some time in the last month...visit Ted's Hot Dogs because you've never really tried a hot dog. Once you've tried Ted's I'll trust you if you tell me you just don't like hot dogs. (But I'll still doubt any food/restaurant recs you send my way after that).

Google
Ted's Hotdogs 🌭 absolutely fresh with quality, cooked over open Mesquite coals with the perfect broil flavor! You want to enjoy a 4th of July BBQ that takes your taste buds to sparks in the sky this is the place.

Patricia Burngasser

Google
Polish sausage looked more like fresh (grill person insisted it was smoked and said " the workers in Buffalo said they wished they had the Arizona brand 🤔. I ordered a hot dog instead. The skin "snapped" when I bit into it. Definitely different than WNY. Fries and rings were greasy and overdone. Maybe the fryers were too hot or the oil needed to be changed. DELICIOUS milkshakes.

Brian Sproat

Google
Teds is a special place, always solid food and was a treat to visit the only one outside of Buffalo! You guys nailed the order. The grill master was on point. She had it together!

joel

Google
Had a beef hotdog with Mac and cheese and onions on it. It tasted good but not mind blowing good. Perhaps my expectations were too high. Anyhow it is good but other hotdogs are also good so just set your expectations. The location is nice with parking, shade and plenty of seating in and out. Went at 3pm and the there was a bit of a line, maybe 10 orders in front of me. However the line didn’t move very quickly, so I had to wait longer than expected.

Yelp
When I was younger, people raved about this place and I was told that I HAD to try it. It is the only one in AZ (I think the only location outside of New York) and they do a great job with grilled sausages. There's an old-school restaurant vibe that is similar to some famous pastrami shops in California. Maybe that's just me and remembering the feeling of similar spots from my childhood. It is not anything fancy, but a clean place to sit and enjoy your fast food, fast. Tip: pay attention as you get towards the grill and be prepared to order when it is your turn. The plain hot dogs are just that. They're grilled over hardwood charcoal in front of you and you can add a wide array of toppings, some of which are free and others which are not. Besides the hot dogs, I like the white hot, "Schreiner's pork and veal white hot cooked over real hardwood charcoal served on a potato bun," with mustard and onions. Probably my German heritage. They've got an extensive list of their food with common allergens on their website, so you can check before you go whether the onion rings, for example, contain dairy.

Yelp
This is a consistently good place to enjoy some encased meats. Usually go with one of Italian, All Beef, or Footlong as the main choice. Burgers are decent too. Fries are crispy. The onion rings are the thing to get. All sorts of heavily battered tiny onions gives you a crunchy greasy bites of awesome. It can get busy during lunch time and weekend rushes. But always worth the wait. Nothing flashy inside but plenty of seating even on the busiest of days. Pictures of the other locations out in Buffalo. Enjoy eating here!

Yelp
Ted's Hot Dogs..definitely wonderful spacious dining area with many seats for guests. Great wonderful friendly service..have a good chat while they are whipping up your burger or hotdog on the grill.. if you come in for first time don't get lined up at the register as usually..def was my mistake.. start from the far right in front of the grill, and give an employee at the grill your order.. gotta say it was kind of hard to order when the items for sale are not all included on the main menu board..but scattered around on paper around the grill/register ( which I did post a picture of) I do gotta be honest ..the food wasn't that great...maybe it could just be the char grill taste isn't my style .. My son thought his burger tasted burnt, after trying it to not feel money wasted on food..had to agree with him on burnt...my chili dog wasn't anything special.. the chili was bland.. didn't even finish the food I ordered... just wasn't tasteful in my opinion or worth the calories. The fries were yummy though :). Definitely try it out and make your own opinion ...food just wasn't for me.

Yelp
I've been to Ted's three times, it's a nice place. I'll give it that very spacious comfortable. The people seem wonderful. Always been clean when I've been there. But here is the rub. The hotdogs are "meh" at best. I'm kind of a hotdog snob and I just wasn't super impressed. Plus basically a drink a dog and an order of fries is gonna set you back about 12ish bucks and for a dog that's a little pricey for an average dog at best that's super pricey. Not saying that Costco makes the best hot dog in the world, but it beats this place and it's a buck and a half with a drink
google avatar

Yelp
After all these years, Ted's is still great! Tasty food, friendly staff, and a clean restaurant...what else can you ask for?
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. So many people raved about the hot dogs, but I was severely disappointed. The chili was like cooked ketchup with a mysterious meat mixture. It is overpriced for a below average hot dog. would not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is absolutely amazing! The best thing is that you should come after the rush hour. If you plan it right, you won't have to wait in line! Their hotdogs are amazing but today I changed things up with a hamburger and onion! The onion rings are awesome. They're broken down onions fried to perfection And not oily at all. The restaurant itself is pretty old school, however, their food is not! It's all about the product in the price not the decor!
google avatar

Elliot S.

Yelp
I've been eating here for decades and it's always on point. It's clean and the general manager is awesome. He's been working here since I was a kid! Please throw away those fork and knife burgers and gross hot dogs then come here for a professionally-grilled, home-style tasting burger or dog. Don't forget to try the Loganberry soda!
google avatar

Yelp
Arrived at 2:15 on a Sat afternoon, line was almost out the door. After 45 minutes we got the goods and it was worth the wait. It's hit or miss with the line but service was courteous as usual. Dogs, brats, burgers, chicken and even gluten free options, fries and onion rings, etc. Oh, and shakes too. Take away sauces and my favorite vinegar for the fries (IYKYK)!

Yelp
Damn! Been about 10 years since I have written a review for Ted's. I will keep this one short and sweet............. Still my favorite restaurant in the Phoenix area, and still the restaurant I would have my "last meal" at if I ever had to move out of Phoenix. I love it that much. The only reason I don't go as much is because its far away from my house in Surprise. Had to pick up my Mom from the airport last week, so I went here first for some dinner. I got an Italian, a regular dog, and some onion rings. As always, food was bomb! The Italian sausage has the best taste and texture of any sausage I have ever had. The onion rings are my favorite, and the regular dog is always tasty. A perfect meal! Can't wait to come back sooner than later!
google avatar

Yelp
I was looking for something to snack on late at night and saw Ted's Hot Dogs from my Yelp friend who lives in Phoenix, AZ. Joanna was patient, helpful, and very friendly. She said, "Ted's Hot Dogs has been an institution here for 80+ years. In NYC, for about a 100 years" All their hotdogs and sausages are charcoal grilled cooked to order. Regular Hot Dog (with the works of ketchup, mustard, relish, their hot sauce, and a pickle spear). Polish Dog (with the works of ketchup, mustard, relish, their hot sauce, and a pickle spear). Both were delicious and very good. I didn't see the add-ons until after I ordered. They also serve hamburgers, chicken, fries, onion rings, milkshakes, fountain drinks, etc.
google avatar

Beatrice B.

Yelp
We always love this place. It's really fun too watch your flame grilled to order. The menu has just enough items to have some thing for everyone. We love getting the hotdogs, burgers and grilled chicken sandwich. The lingonberry drink is definitely something unique out here in Arizona. Gotta have the fries

Lisa W.

Yelp
The hotdogs are perfection. The people are AWESOME - but the changes that Justin (CEO) is making are terrible! Taking the personal touch away from the successful way that has been the heart and soul of Ted's for FOREVER is wrong. Please reconsider putting in kiosk and automation and allow Ted's to continue to thrive in the amazing and successful way it always has. Blaine is the icon here at the Tempe location and Selene is a very hard coworker and provides amazing customer service.

Yelp
Everyone loves a bargain, so when Ted's Hot Dogs offered a BOGOF promotion, I couldn't pass on the deal. Ted's Hot Dogs in Tempe pays homage to it's Buffalo, NY roots. Walk in and you're immediately greeted by a newsstand with both the Buffalo News and the Arizona Republic in case you want to catch up on the news of the day for either city. The walls are adorned with touches of Buffalo, such as a photo of Buffalo City Hall with the THD mascot directly in front. (Looks like a parade float.). I miss some other decor such as UB and Buff State pennants which were removed long ago. As you enter the restaurant, you're immediately hit with the aroma of toppings. "Onion" is not my favorite scent, but it comes with the territory. Thank goodness the grill is there to "balance" it. Back to the BOGOF ... the cashier seemed new and incorrectly charged me for an item I didn't order, then seemed to have difficulty figuring out how to use the register to make a correction. What I really wanted was a coney but, sadly, they aren't offered. The dining area isn't fancy, but serves its purpose. It was neat and clean with plenty of seating. You'll hear 80's and 90's music from "back in the day" to enjoy with your meal. The hot dogs were juicy and flavorful, though slightly cool, not hot. That said, their hot dogs are good enough to eat without toppings, so that says a lot. The buns were soft and fresh. Plus, keeping to their Buffalo roots, they serve a sweet and flavorful Loganberry drink which is a must on every visit. Just don't spill it. It's likely to stain clothing. If you're up for some yummy hot dogs and a bit of nostalgia, Ted's Hot Dogs is just the place.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
For a hot dog place, they do burgers right! My partner hates bacon, but loves their bacon cheese burgers, and he isn't wrong, they are juicy with a wonderful char flavor. I love that they toast their buns so that the juice doesn't make the bun soggy. Their hot dogs are good ... I'm not a hot dog person, but I used to love their chili dogs, however they recently changed the chili recipe so it is more tomato forward. If you like a very tomato chili, theirs will for sure suit your palate. And what's weird, the fish and chips ain't bad for a fast foodish place. Their tartar sauce is really good.

John E.

Yelp
Best ever and they have white hots!! White hots are a Upstate New York delight. Made from pork, if you have not ate one, give it a try. Mine is well done with mustard only.

Yelp
Not to "date myself," but I have been coming to Ted's Hot Dogs for between 25 & 30 years. Having been an Arizona State University student back in the late 1990s, I remember the days when Spiro was often present on property. Maria and Blaine managed the restaurant like it was their own with love, care and efficiency. They appreciated their regular customers ... So much so that I was invited the their child's birthday party once. Talk about feeling loved & cherished by a business one supports. I have glanced over a few of the reviews, and, yes, the ordering process is different than what many are used to in these modern times. However, to me, it adds to the appeal. It is fun and exciting to be part of that fire-line & to join in the joy and the energy with other Ted's patrons who do not mind waiting a bit for a hot dog that is SO GRAND!!! You will not taste anything better anywhere in AZ as far as a hot dog is concerned. Going to Ted's has always been an event. Now that I have my own children, they too have experienced the wonder that is their real genuine delish one-of-kind milkshakes. All is worth the wait! Take it in, and enjoy your time is this fantastic restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Ted's is the best and always has been! Charcoal grilled dogs done right. Cute sit down restaurant with historical pics and great employees serving the good stuff
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
Order counter not good. Ordered 2 All beef dogs, one with chili and cheese with M-K-+ Jalapeño. Got it without the chili and cheese, fries were really good, chocolate shake was good. Service-average- Ambiance- ok . One really bad thing is, I went in bathroom and the stall door opened and a Teds worker came out and without washing his hands went straight back to work. Good thing I had already eaten or I probably wouldn't have

Jed A.

Yelp
I saw this place on TV on July 4 so gave it a try. The chili isn't chili. Don't know what it is but it tastes like warmed up ketchup. The hot sauce isn't hot. Oh well. I gave it a try and now know not to go back.
google avatar

Nita R.

Yelp
I hate to say something is overrated, but I think this place is overrated. My hotdog was just OK. I was really excited to go there because I had heard a lot of fan fare about Ted's, but it was just OK. Maybe I tried the wrong thing because they have a lot of different like sausages, and I got a basic hotdog with the fixings. My dog didn't really have a snap or anything it was a grilled dog that's it's, nothing great. Service was nice overall and the customers helped me as I waited in line to follow the process. The people all seemed nice. There no hoopla just a restaurant with some seating. Stand in line order and your food is literally ready at the checkout. That was pretty efficient.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
What can I say other than this place is good, but it used to be better. The food has stayed the same on the menu, but the quality is not what it used to be. Service is good and fast. Ambiance is the same it ever has been. The milkshakes are the best part.
google avatar

Brent J.

Yelp
Great concept, but there was an interesting individual pacing back and forth behind us that totally threw off all the good vibes. Brats could've been better if they weren't so pink internally
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
I'm a hotdog connoisseur and an Arizona transplant. As soon as I saw hotdog in the name I knew I had to try Ted's. The service was no nonsense and it was very busy. I like the simple roomy setup of the dining room. It's simply but seats many people. The all beef dog was amazing and my only regret was not getting 2.
google avatar

Sherry B.

Yelp
Tried their sausages dog and to my personal preference, it's not nearly as good as the all beef hotdog. The flavors for sausage are just kind of blend. Their onion rings are so good, and all beef hotdog is consistently good too.
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
Fun place. Casual for families or just to hang out for a good dog, fries, onion rings, shakes and other comfort food. Order at the counter and get your dogs at the end of the line. Nothing fancy, but hits the spot in a neat atmosphere. Bring your kids or come on a date. I don't see how if you're looking for something casual you won't like Ted's. We're not much of hot dog fans, but Ted's may have changed that. :)
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
If you haven't been to this landmark you're missin out! Teds has been a staple in Tempe for quite some time. If you're from Tempe or AZ, this is the spot for a good hot dog. This place is constantly packed with customers so you know the service and food are great. Every time I come it's always a great experience and the ambiance is always great. They also offer vegetarian options along with hamburgers, fish n chips and corn dogs. Check this spot out!
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
After hearing many good things about Ted's, I finally made it here. You order at the counter, and wait for your food to be ready by the time you hit the register. Great, friendly service. Grilled hotdogs are fresh. French fries and onion rings weren't bad either, but if I had to choose, I would pick the onion rings.
google avatar

Yelp
Ted's hotdogs 1755 E Broadway Rd Tempe, AZ July 19, 2023 Drink: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Portion size: 5/5 Visit: Came to grab glizzys for "National Hotdog day" at one of arizonas original hotdog makers! Food: We ordered four regular hotdogs with two sides of chili and one side of cheese to create chili dogs. We also got one side of onion rings and bacon cheese fries. Service: Dine-in, Service was great and food was prepared correctly and under 15 minutes through the line during dinner rush, service was fast and all regular hotdogs were 50% off this dinner cost us $23.
google avatar

Humberto Y.

Yelp
It's hot dogs, over a fire. It's as good as it gets, it's quick service and solid eating whenever you have time. Sometimes the line is super long, but it moves super fast.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Teds is the best hotdog you'll get in Arizona. Char grilled and always high quality. We have been coming here for decades and the service has always been amazing. Keep in mind you're going to have to wait but it's worth it. Burger are good too but the hotdogs are why we go, corn dogs are always a good choice too
google avatar

Brenda S.

Yelp
the food is good tastes just like if i were to grill my own food. Only downside is waiting in line to place and receive your order. I mean i understand the concept order your food and they grill right in front of you, collect your food and move on. But, the lines especially if you have a BIG group you just stand and stand waiting. I saw people getting irritated and walk out. Overall the food is good tastes homemade, nothing fancy. It is overpriced for a backyard burger or hotdog. But still good.
google avatar

Kathryn W.

Yelp
Best dogs and burgs in town. Been going here for 40 years. Never disappointed in their service and taste!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Thought the hotdogs would be fancy, but they're just hotdogs. Little confusing if first time there. I guess it's great for the kids.
google avatar

Deena V.

Yelp
Chili cheese dog, sausage and a hot dog with fixing. Onion rings very good, soda and loganberry shake. $38 Dogs have really good flavor off the grill. Chili was a bit too spicy for me. Really good shake.

Andy H.

Yelp
Greeted with a big smile, food was hot, all beef dog with spicy mustard and onions and a fair amount of fries. Perfect for the price. Place was clean and plenty of parking

Yelp
My first time at a Ted's. Traveling in Arizona with a friend from Buffalo NY when we came across Ted's in Tempe. She wanted to see how it stacked up with the original in Buffalo so we went in. They were actually cooking with Charcoal in the kitchen. My friend said they have a hotter coals in NY. We ordered foot long hot dogs and onion rings. She has a touch of catsup on hers and I had a bit of cheese sauce and chili. My friend declared the dogs nearly as good as they are in Buffalo. I enjoyed my dog, but the onion rings were a miss for me. Very bland and a bit odd. Stick to the fries is my advice All in all I would go again. I seldom have hot dogs but Sahlen dogs are pretty good!

S D.

Yelp
I grew up in Buffalo, New York, (homebase of Ted's), currently live in St. Louis, and all I can say is - puleeeze - open a Ted's in Missouri. I spend way too much time thinking and talking about Ted's and would much rather spend that time eating them! THE BEST.
google avatar

P S.

Yelp
Everything was ok.... But it was like a cheap hotdog stand. My husband says Costco is a lot better. There all beef dogs actually have pork or pork casing so not 100% beef. Onion rings were cold and soggy by the time we sat down. Fried pickles were good. The worst part was biting into my fish there was a piece of steel wool which cut the inside of my mouth. My husband tried to bring it up to staff and they said was "oh". No apology or concern at all.

Slk O.

Yelp
Had better food at 7_11 from the past the dogs got smaller polish shrunk buns were stale and caned chili from who knows where. Never go back.

John S.

Yelp
Hot dog buns soft and buttery. Everything was cooked fresh. Really good. A bit pricy 30 bucks for 3 dogs, fries and a drink. Dining room was nice and clean. The service was excellent.
google avatar

Luna G.

Yelp
Another win thanks to work. Never been here before but prices aren't bad, the Dog was good and so were the bacon cheddar fries and shake
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Yesss - another Buffalo, NYer moved west coaster discovering a west coast location of Ted's to bring me nostalgic joy. This is a great place, established in Buffalo in the 20s and brought to the west coast. The concept is simple: charcoal grilled hot dogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and more! Your American delights: french fries, onion rings, milkshakes...in all old timey atmosphere to bring you back to the good classic times. I shared a foot long Sahlen's dog with chilli on top and had a double burger to myself. So delicious! Nothing beat's a Sahlen's hot dog. It's not hipster-y, it's not fancy, it's just a good old fashioned great hot dog with all the fixins' you could want grilled right in front of you to order. The burgers are delicious too. You can't go wrong with Ted's. Give it a try!
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
I make a point of visiting Ted's Hot Dogs anytime I'm in the area. My husband's family is from Buffalo, NY and Sahlen's hot dogs are one of the Buffalo favorites we tend to miss in California. This spot has been open for 39 years and while it seems Buffalonians in the know enjoy visiting, it has also become a local favorite in Tempe. While we were in line people were coming in from Buffalo wanting a taste of home as well as Arizona Natives who have never visited the East Coast but have been visiting Ted's since childhood. There's a lot to love here! The staff was super friendly and Blaine talked to us about how he had worked at Ted's in Buffalo and moved out here to help the Arizona location. He was a pro at the grill and was happy to tell us more about the history of Ted's as well as some plans to expand in the Arizona area in the future. I ended up ordering a footlong with mustard, onion and pickle as well as their onions rings, fried pickles and a chocolate malt. My husband (who was stuck home in CA) later told me I made a mistake not getting cheese on my hot dog- the melted cheese is incredible on their hot dogs! I also bought five pounds of hot dogs to take home- they came packaged and frozen, perfect for my upcoming flight. But be warned, TSA will want to check them out... Everything was so delicious and I loved the mural and neons in the restaurant that served as a great backdrop for some photos. It was a lot of food, so I was happy to share with my friends and I think we all left with bigger smiles and full tummies.

Yelp
Every once in a while I get a huge craving for a chili dog and my usual go to place for mine is usually Sonic and now I know why a foot long h chili dog is a HUGE disappointment to say the least. The chili here is beyond terrible it taste like someone opened up a jar of Ragu spaghetti sauce it was super sweet in a terrible way not to mention oily to the point that it made my bun unedible. My boyfriend ordered a Chicago style hot dog now his was ok but I wasn't about ready to eat all of his lol. Now the other issue was their customer service the staff was cold and not customer service friendly so my first time experience was also my last e experience I have no desire at all to eat here again.
google avatar

Erika N.

Yelp
Whoever Ted is, he really knows what's up! I'm a hot dog lover & once I saw the reviews for Ted's I knew I had to visit. It's got that old time diner feel & they cook up the dogs fresh on the grill in front of you. We definitely over ordered during our visit, but it was still worth the full belly. We split three of the all beef hots dogs each with different toppings. The first was a classic Chicago dog - it was good, but not fully a traditional Chicago dog since it was missing the pepper & had ketchup on it. The second was a chili cheese dog - loved the flavor of the chili! We forgot to add some mustard on top which I think really would have completed it. The last was a Mac n cheese and ketchup dog - where else can you get Mac n cheese on a hot dog?! Loved it! The fries were also super good. They were perfectly crispy & I loved the cheese sauce. A grand slam of a meal all around. I will definitely be back for more!

Yelp
I consider myself a hotdog snob. A friend recommended Ted's to me, aware of my love for hotdogs. I went in with low expectations, but then again - I'm always willing to try a hot dog. First, these puppies are cooked over a flame. You can choose your delectable - all beef, mixed beef/port, brat, etc. I went all beef. I ordered two different types. One dressed with chili and cheese and one with mustard and onions. Upon first bite, my hot dog totally squirted the couple in the next booth. Wow. Charred and juicy. While I don't usually go for flame broiled dogs - this one impressed with flavor and juiciness. Tipping wise, I wasn't. A huge fan of the chili, but I don't ding for that. I did love the cheese as well as the different dipping sauces for the fries. Would definitely go back!!

Yelp
I am from upstate NY and went to college in Buffalo. When I moved to Phoenix I learned quickly that the food was not nearly as good as NY. I did some research and discovered Ted's. I have never been to Ted's when I lived in NY. While waiting in line there are newspapers from Buffalo to read. The inside had an old school feel which I liked. For food we got a lot of everything. Chicago dog, white hot, Italian sausage, onion rings, fries and a milkshake. Only miss was the onion rings; I wouldn't get them again. Everything else was very good. Everything had a ton of flavor. The kind of food where you keep eating even when you are full. Employees were very nice. The place was clean. Only complaint is the area seems to be drug ridden. There are locks on the bathroom doors so at least the business is doing something. I did feel a little uncomfortable having my kids there. If you are in the mood for some hotdogs Ted's if definitely the place to go.

Todd T.

Delicious hotdogs!!!! You can't find a better cook dog. Over an open grill. Cooked to perfection!!! Yummy Friendly service!!! I do love stopping by Ted's. I can only do it about once a year cuz it's a tad pricey. (For me...) Two beef hotdogs, split fry's & onion rings with a large soda... $25.00+a tip Doesn't break the bank, but for lunch on my own. You get what ya pay for and this food is worth it! (Now & then)
