Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Mexican sandwiches — aka tortas — are the raison d’être at this snug mom-and-pop, which offers about 18 different sandwiches, most stacked with fresh avocado, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeño, all tucked into toasted, golden-brown bread. Standouts include the al pastor (pastor-style marinated pork with bacon and onion), the Alambre (asada with bacon, onion, bell pepper and cheese), and the Cubana (pork pierna, breaded steak, ham, and cheese), but brave hearts might opt for the seriously spicy ahogada or the crunchy, fatty colitas de pavo (fried turkey tails). Wash everything down with fresh, foamy aguas frescas." - McConnell Quinn

The 38 Essential Restaurants in Phoenix

"Owner Gustavo Lom’s shop is a mainstay of the 16th Street corridor and a hotbed of great Mexican eating, where classic Mexican sandwiches come filled with options like cochinita pibil and fried turkey tails. Check out the torta ahogada, Mexico’s fiery answer to the French dip: a crusty bolillo roll stuffed with tender carnitas and avocado and “drowned” in chile de arbol sauce. Lom also stocks a decked-out salsa bar." - Nikki Buchanan, Chris Malloy

If you’re looking for authentic, mouthwatering tortas this is the place to go! I came in for a torta and left completely impressed. The tortas are absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned meat, and all the right toppings. You can tell they put a lot of love into their food. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the staff. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly, and attentive—it felt like visiting family. Great vibes all around! Highly recommend if you’re craving real Mexican flavors and great service. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
Really good tortas, place was clean & the service was great. Even the fries were really good, you could tell they were very fresh & not frozen. The Jamaica agua fresca was amazing too, just the perfect amount of sweetness & tartness!

Google

I also got a horchata. At firet i was on the fence ab spending 6 bucks on a horchata. But definitely worth it. Its homemade and they give u quite alot. Soooo good. Sweet people who work here def try this place. Id put some photos but i ate ts up real quick.

Google
Stopped by Tortas El Güero here in Phoenix and had their torta de milanesa and it was absolutely delicious. The sandwich came with a small side of fries, perfect portion. What really stood out were their homemade sauces: a spicy red hot sauce and a creamy guacamole green sauce, both full of flavor. What I love even more is supporting a family-owned business. I got to see “El Güero” himself along with the family running the spot. You can feel the pride and love they put into their food. Definitely recommend if you’re craving a solid torta and want to support local!

Google
After randomly choosing this place based on the road i was driving down i stumbled across this restaurant. It's a semi cozy mexican sandwich joint. But upon walking up to the order counter I was greeted by a beefcake white guy, about 20 and I asked him for a recommendation and he directly said couldn't tell ya, very dry person with a constant scowl on his face. So I got the cubana torta. And looked around and the place has a whole mafia front house vibe. So I sat and ate and observed and the vibe was just off. The food on the otherhand was okay. The meat in the sandwich was over cooked, dry and greasy, but the veggies on it were good. I felt cautious after a few bites. Wouldn't be back. Place is sketchy.

Google
Very delicious Tortas it’s been voted number one in Phoenix and it’s clear why the ingredients are fresh and delicious the meat is thick and the salsa plus the delicious fries!! The owner is very sweet and it’s a wonderful family!! Bring everyone here!!it’s truly an oasis in the food desert! Support local families who work hard and have mastery of their craft!

Google
If you haven't tried the Tortas at this family run business of three generations, you're missing out. favorite is the Cochinita pibil, pulled pork torta. It is truly an award winning sandwich. Artfully crafted, shredded pork was seasoned and marinated perfectly, the pork is garnished with fresh slices of avocado and tomato on a soft torta roll that can hardly contain the filling. All of the sauces are very tasty and really put the sandwich over the top with flavor. This family run establishment has been in business for years, and for good reason.

Google
The tortas and tacos were incredibly delicious 🤤, and the service was quick and efficient. The young man was very polite . I will definitely return. I love family owned restaurants

Yelp
My barber, who is from El Paso, and I were discussing best tacos in town. His wife is from Nogales, Chihuahua, Mexico, and we both love Taco Chiwas so I gave him some credibility. Especially since I'm from Minnesota, not known for its tacos (Although we have some good ones.) He loves this place and I agree. It's a very high quality, medium priced place. I ordered two Cubana Tortas to go and they were stunning. I'll come back and eat through their menu.

Yelp
My first time having tortas! I ordered carne asada, and it was delicious. It's super filling, especially with fries. I popped in for a Friday lunch, and they were slow. There is tons of seating, casual, family friendly, and tv's around. The gentlemen working the counter were kind and helpful, offering recommendations. The food was made quickly. I'd definitely stop by again.

Yelp
The tortas here are amazing, especially the alambre de pollo, cochinita, and the mind-meltingly good al pastor. Even the fries that come with most dishes are better than average crispy (though they're sometimes hit or miss). You can't wrong with anything here. Even the average at TEG is miles above most other places. The ambiance is laid back, clean, and surprisingly styley for a multi-generational family-run place. The only drawbacks are that they're kind of weird about taking cards for payment (they used to hide the card reader under the counter), and I could without the TVs playing Newsmax and OAN all the time. (I prefer my tortas sin fascist propaganda).

Yelp
Service was great mom and pop restaurant literally felt like I was visiting abuelitas house.. older lady took our order you can tell she someone Spanish abuela and abuelito in the kitchen for the chef def gave me home feeling Food was great amazing every bite was flavorful from the carne asada to the Alpastor For the torta cubana man best torta I've had in a long time featured in the az times in 2020 I can see why with a side of fresco de piña def recommend Clean 10/10 Food 10/10 Price $$ Service 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Our first time here, the carne asada torta was hot off the grill. It was perfect I loved it. Great service
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
-Service was phenomenal! They were kind, helpful, & patient -The restaurant was clean, spacious, & you can sit wherever you like -I had a carne asada torta and it unfortunately, it was really subpar. There were many parts of the meat that weren't edible, they over load it with mayo, & something that makes a torta great is the bread and there was just nothing special about this one. -My friend had the cubano and they seemed to really enjoy theirs!
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
Local, casual family-run business that I appreciated hanging out at. Sweet lady who speak Spanish to you and manages the place will take your order. I got the asada torta for myself and the asada taco for my baby. The torta was quite satisfying and very juicy! It's probably the ideal food for when you are hungover. It does have quite a bit of grease on it so if that's not your jam, stay away. The taco was simple, with some meat, onions, and cilantro. The only reason I'm not giving four stars is that the torta is almost $20, which is quite a lot for a hole-in-the-wall Mexican street food meal. It certainly does not have enough meat or avocado to justify that. I am all for supporting local businesses with all of my heart, but not at ludicrous prices. Similar story with the taco - You can probably find a more hardy taco for less than $4 in the vicinity.

Yelp
TLDR: Tasty tortas in a fast casual setting. Great option for a quick lunch! Vibe: 4/5. Tortas El Guero is located in a nondescript strip mall with a few other businesses. Parking is plentiful, so you will have no problem getting in and out in a pinch. Inside has a fast casual setup, with a main counter for ordering and several 2 and 4 tops for dining in. Everything was very clean and well organized during our visit which was perfect for our impromptu lunch. The menu is displayed over the register. One small gripe is that I wish the overhead menu had a breakdown as to what is on each sandwich. I had to pull up the menu online to see what each sandwich entailed, as some include more than what their menu name entails. Service: 5/5. The Staff at Tortas El Guero were great! We were immediately greeted when we walked into the restaurant and they were very helpful in explaining the menu. They also brought our food out to our table when it was ready, not a necessity in a fast casual restaurant environment, but certainly a nice touch! Food: 5/5. The tortas and tacos are fantastic! My group of 4 opted to try the torta Cubana, al pastor tacos, carne asada tacos and the torta Pacifico. Everything came out at the same time piping hot and with lovely presentation. My cubana was generously filled with breaded steak, pork pierna, ham and gooey cheese. Each bite was insanely flavorful, with the bread being the perfect vehicle for the fillings due to its soft interior and crusty outside. The tacos were also a hit, as they were overflowing with meat and toppings that the 3 tacos are more than enough for the hungriest of eaters. Overall, TEG is the perfect spot for well executed, budget friendly Mexican eats, especially if you are short on time!

Yelp
This place is so delicious!! The best tortas in the valley!! We will be coming back soon. Fresh ingredients and amazing taste!!

Yelp
I would really like to try the tortas, but the hours are inconsistent. I went on a weekday, after work, and arrived shortly before 5:30 and was told my a gentleman that they were closed now even though hours state until 6pm. Attempted to go again today, Sunday at 11:45am, and the business is closed. Yelp and their website both say open Monday-Sunday from 10am-6pm.
google avatar

Junior R.

Yelp
Was excited by all the good reviews. $18 for a torta? Was my 1st and last. Thank god it came with 20 french fries to make it worth it. Nope.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Everything we go there closed during said business hours . So I have to say they must not be that great if they don't have enuff business to st a y open for there regular hours. Tried 3x.

Nanci A.

Yelp
One of those neighborhood hole in the walls every one loves. Try a torta if you're really hungry, have someone to share it with or want something for later. They're huge!

Paola E.

Yelp
I've had multiple tortas of different kinds as well as a variety of their tacos. This place never disappoints. My personal favorites include the Milaneza de Res Torta and the Alambre de Res torta. The tortas I've had from here always come fresh and are accompanied with a side of crispy fries and tasty salsa. If the best part isn't the toasted golden-brown bread, then it's the fresh avocado, lettuce, tomato and jalapeno on top of the tender carne of the Milaneza de Res or the sizzling combination of asada, bacon, cheese and bell pepper of the Alambre de Res. I like to have these with their pina agua fresca, but they also have other aguas. Overall, this place is great if you're looking for something fulfilling at a very welcoming place. The service is quick and helpful too! Side note: I'm not sure why this place is reported as closed, I stop here all the time. Open hours are Monday - Saturday, 10AM to 5PM

Yelp
If you never had tortas this is the place to go I got the Al pastor torta and it was 10/10 everyone that works there super friendly feels like family ! Recommend Las tortas están al 100
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
The torta ahogada here is really good and it is hot. If spicy food is tough for you, I'd prob get something else on the menu (which I'm sure will still be great). But if you like spicy food and pork and stuff the ahogada is great and we should ahogada more things. The salsa has a lot of great flavor and the pork is tender. It's probably the best torta ahogada I've had (and I think I've had it at like 7 or 8 spots).

W L.

Yelp
This place is absolutely wonderful. Best torta I've ever had. Asada was perfect. Guacamole excellent. Alambre super tasty. Quality of ingredients superb. Definitely coming back.
google avatar

Todd M.

Yelp
The best Tortas I've ever had. Seriously. We stopped here after getting beers at Wren Brewing! Great combo.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
The girl up front suggested the Cubana and it was AMAZING! It came with two sauces, fries and ketchup. 10/10 recommend The indoor seating area is large and family friendly.
google avatar

Mitch R.

Yelp
If I could rate this place higher, I would. I blindly ordered the "Cubano" torta as recommended by one of the incredibly friendly employees. When I say that sandwich was perfect, it was PERFECT. The bread couldn't have been better, the meat was fantastic, and even the fries were great! Everyone working was in a great mood, very friendly, and the place is very nice and clean. I will definitely be back, and I'll be recommending their food to anyone who will listen! Thanks for the great lunch!
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
If you're on the hunt for a sandwich that's beyond compare, you simply have to try the Cubana at this restaurant. This isn't your average Cuban sandwich, as it takes things to a whole new level. The pork is cooked to perfection and it's not drowning in mustard or overwhelmed by pickles. I've been a regular here for more than two decades, and I can attest to the fact that the quality and flavor of their sandwiches has never wavered. It's clear that this family-owned establishment takes great pride in what they do. In fact, you can feel the love and care that goes into each and every sandwich they make. When you step inside, you'll be greeted with warm, friendly service from the entire family. It's refreshing to see a small business that values customer satisfaction as much as they do. From the moment you order, you'll be treated like family. If you're looking for a sandwich that will take your taste buds on an unforgettable journey, you have to check out this spot. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Cindy P.

Yelp
The Torta's are amazing!! Such great food and the family that run the business are so warm and friendly. Very clean and decorated nicely. You're missing out if you have not tried this place, a co-worker had told me about this restaurant, glad she did!

Suzannah B.

Yelp
The food was amazing! We had the Cuban torta, chips & guac, & 3-tacos special. The chips are homemade & everything was fresh! Would recommend all of these dishes & the pork tacos were some of the best we've ever had.
google avatar

Rudy M.

Yelp
For 10.99 a burrito, I found it over priced and without taste. Really disappointed, besides being really small . Not a good buy .
google avatar

Deni G.

Yelp
Great Find This was my first visit to Tortas El Guero but it won't be my last. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly and accomdating. . When you walk in, order at the counter and food is brought out to your table, and your entrée is served on a real breakable plates with silverware. There is a sauce bar with serval different sauces to try. On this visit I had The Cuban torta, beans, and rice and it was delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, the bread was crispy and light, and the sauce was flavorful with just enough spice. If you're every in the area, stop by you wont be disappointed.
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
I was in the mood for a Torta and happen to be right by this place. Immediately as I walked in I was greeted by the cook and cashier. The location is wide open inside and clean. The torta I ordered was the Alambre de Res. Holly Molly was it freaking good! The beef was tender, the ingredients moist and juicy and the bread was super soft and warm. Just an awe moment having this Torta! I'll be back for more!!!
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Amazing. One of the best tortas I've ever had. I've now been a handful of times after finding this place! So good. Very authentic. If you work close to PCH or at PCH come check this pace out. One tip is that they prefer cash and charge extra to use a credit card so just bring cash to make your life easier!

victoria d.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for lunch today and it was amazing. The torta was so delicious, side of fries were very crispy and my Jamaica was so fresh, not too sweet. This place is a solid 10/10. So flavorful!!
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
Lunch here was great! We arrived a little after 11am so it wasn't at all busy. The cashier was very friendly and helped us right away. We ordered their quesadilla special which includes the quesadilla, rice, beans, and a canned soda. We then also ordered one torta de milanesa de pollo. We paid about $26 for the two plates and a canned soda. The salad bar was really clean and fully stocked and the dining area was clean. We sat down and about 10 minutes later the food was brought out to us. The torta was delicious! They have three different torta sizes. (mini, regular, large) The bread tasted homemade and the milanesa de pollo (breaded chicken) was perfectly flavored. The torta also came with seasoned French fries! The quesadilla was really good and the carne asada filling was delicious. The beans and rice were also very good. People started trickling in around noon, so it's definitely a lunch spot! Most definitely worth checking out if your in the area!

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Cubans torta was very tasty but the sandwich and small side of basic fries were not worth $16. Way overpriced. It is for that reason that I give it three stars.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
This is a a great spot Fresh flavors Great el pastor Nice family owned restaurant Try it you'll like it
google avatar

Nathaly M.

Yelp
This is place is so good! The owners are sweet people. I love their Tortas. The place is always clean and it looks cute.

Sarah R.

Yelp
I was recently introduced to this gem and let me tell you that it's so delicious! I've tried a few things off the menu but my ultimate favorite is the milanesa torta it's fire..

Devin H.

Yelp
I don't know why there aren't more people here, this place is awesome. I highly recommend the Cubana torta!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
Today I had the Carne Asada torta. It was absolutely the best! Great Asada with fresh toppings and avocado. They also have a wonderful taco Tuesday special. I will definitely be back again.

Dena T.

Yelp
Torta asada is absolutely delicious. Bread is fresh, avocado is creamy and the steak has good flavor. It all melts in your mouth. The service is fast and efficient. I totally recommend this place!
google avatar

Kerri S.

Yelp
I ordered the pollo torta mini. The chicken tasted like it was just boiled, no spice, sauce, flavor but yet was dry. The fries were crispy, all 8 of them but needed salt. But as the guy at the counter told me, everything is $ extra. $9.00 for the plate (cheese was $1.50 extra and cold, not melted) seemed a steep for tiny portion of subpar food.
google avatar

Dakota P.

Yelp
Great food, quick service, friendly staff. Home made chips, what could go wrong! Favorite kind of find when traveling, hole in the wall, family ran place! Bathrooms need some up keeping but no complaints about food!
google avatar

Arlene G.

Yelp
Came in a Second time for the Taco Tuesday Special:Shrimp and Fish tacos! Deliciousness at first bite. $9.99 for a five taco special. Which is a steal as each taco $2.95. Shareable plate, just for taco Tuesday.
google avatar

Kartikeya S.

Yelp
This one star is for the speed of order completion. I ordered the Cubano Torta figuring they have Torta in the name of the restaurant, so this would be pretty decent. At best I would say it was edible. Not much flavor in anything and most of the ingredients tasted like they had been thawed this morning. They also gave me "Hot" sauces, one of which was bright flourescent green. I'm not sure what edible product gives you that color, but any flavor was completely absent. The bread was probably the best part of the sandwich. Plus, as icing on the cake, no masks on ANYONE, and no social distancing means they never get my business again.
google avatar

Ana S.

Yelp
So sad to see this place - so empty - food was just ok - they charge 1.00 if you use your credit card or debit card - but if you pay cash they give you a free soda???? I been there before and use to always be super busy for lunch and super clean , not the same anymore. One tv working only. I had the carnitas torta and was just ok with a small handful of fries - ketchup bottles were pretty bad - looks like they refill them . I will come back and check it again , but just can't believe what the years have done the overall of the restaurant.
google avatar

Dawn W.

Yelp
Love family owned places. Especially ones where the owners kids are hanging out. Food was delicious and well made. Not overly large portions fills you up without being stuffed. Bread and veggies on torta were fresh, meat was well seasoned without being overpowering. I walked in to get our to go order and saw grandpa sitting by the door. Grandma in the kitchen with mom and her two youngest boys. Mom was obviously teaching the boys in great detail how to make the meal. The older daughter manned the cash register. 2 older boys were sitting at a table watching tv. The daughter told me that since it's a family business the kids are always there helping out. Surprised it was lunch time and we were the only ones there. The dinning room and kitchen were very clean and well taken care of. We'll be back to eat lunch at this little gem of a restaurant and then we'll go for ice cream next door.
google avatar

Joanna G.

Yelp
5/5! If you haven't tried, you need to! We passed by it and decided to Yelp it and found all the high ratings so decided to give it a try. Yes, it's a little pricey but trust me QUALITY and FLAVOR is all there. Husband said it's the best torta spot he's ever had in the US and I agree! And honestly feels so good to support a small business with lovely owners like this! Can't wait to return and try more from their menu.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
The avocado and cheese torta was very small and it was thin on ingredients, and the fries were overcooked from frozen. But it cost the same as if the ingredients were fresh and the portions were large. We would have ordered the calabaza torta but they were out, and they said it's been a year since they carried the poblano torta that's on their online menu. The cashier was almost surly, so the service didn't make up for the pricey, tiny portions. The only redeeming qualities are that it's very clean and the sandwich tasted ok -- like one you could make at home. We won't be back.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
Food is tasty, but it's so overpriced. I understand this is a mom and pop shop, but today, I paid $15.99 + tax for 3 mini tacos and a very very very small portion of rice and beans. You also have to ask for salsa, as they no longer have a salsa bar. If you want to support local, sure the food is decent, but if you're looking for something decently priced and delicious, this is not it.
google avatar

The FoodBoss ..

Yelp
The service is suburb. ..The food is EXCELLENT!!! Carne asada tacos were stuffed with meat!!! Presentation was impressive! I will definitely be back for more! 100% recommend!

Yelp
Great tortas! Luncheoned with some colleagues here, got in before 12 and was able to order immediately with the food ready very quickly. Simple and straightforward menu, good service, short wait times, and great food. I had a Super Torta and a taco. Very good! I didn't know the torta came with fries... For that reason, a single torta would be enough for most. The menu showed some very good Taco Tuesday specials, worth checking out. Great food and I'm looking forward to returning!
google avatar

HoyMay P.

Yelp
Arrived TEG a little after 4pm. Since we were going out later, we both decided to get something small. We each wanted the small torta. They were out of the small buns so we shared a medium size Torta. We wanted to Milanese's d pollo and they were out of that too. Based on the closing hour, 6 PM, this must be a great lunch place. We settled on the pollo torta. The food came quickly. The Torta was very good and fell apart as we were eatng it. Nice ripe slices of avocado and large pieces of chicken breast. The fries were freshly made and good. Staff are friendly and the place is clean. Lots of seating. The cost for a torta is competitive to other torta eateries.

Aryeh G.

Yelp
My first time here. I will be back. Food is delicious! Service was excellent. Great local business that is a gem.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed this past Sunday. I appreciate the open kitchen although this allowed me to see something that I hope never happens. I do not appreciate the man taking trash outside, coming in and touching a bunch of things, then touching the meat of my torta with his bare hands...without even washing his hands. I was so happy the credit card machine was not working so I could stop my order when I saw this. I have been here more than a handful of times and usually am quite happy. I am not now sure if I'll be back.
