We have been here w few times and always enjoyed their burgers, and assortment of other options on the menu. The green onion aioli is top notch, and always our dip of choice for the yummy fries and crispy golden tots.
Tonight we went and as we were sitting there enjoying our food, my husband mentions that he can't understand how the 3 of us got the bill to $70, before a tip. I stop eating, turn around and take a quick peek at the menu, do some math and agree, no way did we spend $70. Mike never gets the receipt despite me telling him to do it every time we eat out... Just in case something happens to the order. Because he didn't get the receipt, I let it go, secretly thinking that's what he deserves for not getting the receipt. But apparently now it's bugging him, so he goes up and gets it reprinted. Turns out , they put an automatic "15% gratuity fee on top of the check, in lieu of tips". As Mike is standing there waiting for the receipt to reprint, he does see the paper explanation of this service fee taped to the counter, which he pointed out to me and I snapped a pic of. So I do definitely have a problem with this autogratting of anything, let alone 15% of the bill, which turned out to be $8.62. there are so many reasons why I a problem with that. First, as a restaurant manager, I have seen servers work their butts off in a full service place and get stiffed. Second, as the posted statement says, this is for all of the staff in lieu of tips. Tips are earned, as I have heard a million times in my career... You don't get to just tack them on to a check to compensate the employees. There were 3 of us, with tax, our bill before the service fee, was $61.00. this was for 2 burgers, 1 hotdog, 3 fries, and 3 drinks. Not cheap. Yes, it's good, and yes, we like to support local businesses, but $61.00 for that tells me (because I do understand food cost and such). The owners are still making a nice profit. So the employees should be getting a fair wage for what they do. The owners should not be passing the labor cost on to the customer.
So yeah, I am pissed, and no, we won't be back.
