It's been a while since I was truly impressed with a foodie destination. This is a place that does more than impress. When you read "food trucks" that really isn't the point. Yes, there are trucks, but they are a decoration. Some of the outside "trucks" are just outdoor kitchens with walls and ceilings, next to trucks that don't ever move. It's a cool concept, and the food is very daring, and very good.
We started with the Mezcalitas of the day, which were smokey cucumber margaritas. Excellent. The bartenders are the slowest on Earth, but make a good drink. These can be found at the beer counter.
Next up were tacos from the place in the back outside.
Pescado Pibil: a corn tortilla, topped with a black bean shmear, topped with another tortilla, topped with shredded fish with a light pibil sauce and pickled red onions $1.88, and tasty.
Atun Tostada: A small crispy tortilla topped with raw tuna and cucumber. Piled as high as possible. Very good.
Pulpo Tacos: Ready? This is not your everyday anything. Blue corn tortilla, filled with tender octopus, cheese, and huitlacoche (corn fungus). This was my favorite, and a complete surprise. The cheese was melted and the corn fungus tasted like sauteed mushrooms. $2.80 each.
After that we headed over to the cheese shop for a cheese and salami platter. The cheeses were very light with no real standouts, but it was fun to have with a bottle of slightly chilled sangiovese cab blend from the bottle shop next door. All the wines they sell, by the glass or bottle, are from the Guadalupe Valley. They let you taste the wines before you purchase. Yum. We loved it. On our way out we grabbed two bags of yellowtail jerky, one spiced and another plain. Wonderful.
This is a cool, and I mean cool by any standard, hip food court with surprises around every corner, and something to please everyone. Granted, you are taking your life into your hands driving there, so you might think to drive something that already has a fair share of dings and dents, as TJ drivers are insane, and street signs are rare. Oh, and traffic is absolute hell. Enjoy.
