I've been here twice during my visits to Nashville. I will have to say my first visit was absolutely wonderful, I just forgot to write a review because it honestly slipped my mind.
Our servers were wonderful, knowledgeable, kind, great conversationalists. They were witty and smart, who knew a great deal about chocolate and absinthe. Unfortunately, I don't remember any of their names, only that it was an all male staff and I was with my boyfriend, his brother, and his dad. It was a phenomenal experience!
If you haven't caught it by now, I attended this location during their after hours "green hour" time when it transforms from a cute hipster chocolate cafe to a low lit, green glowing absinthe bar. Anyway-- naturally after such a great experience, we wanted to go back and show my boyfriends mom a great time, and she had never had absinthe before, so we HAD to go back! That was this past weekend.
From when we first walked into we noticed a complete shift in ambiance, we were greeted by a charmed young lady named Reesa (sp? I forgot exactly how), she seemed nice. We waited in line to be seated or to order.. I dont remember exactly, but something was kind of off. The person who was manning the front young African American lady, while we were at the front of the line, almost skipped us entirely--fine, maybe it was a mistake. She then proceeded to just ignore us and not take our order to shake a cocktail... okay, we get it you're working with other customers... Reesa proceeds to take our order and like just my first visit, we ordered absinthe flights, made up of 3 tastings that are paired with 3 different chocolate truffles. With your flight you use a waterloo and sugar cubes with a (filtering spoon?) to dilute the absinthe to taste. Luckily, my boyfriend had done this before so we vaguely remember what we had to do. Unfortunately, the server did not. Reesa actually ended up having my boyfriends mom over dilute her first tasting when she said that she fill her glass two fingers from the top of the glass with water when diluting.. then proceeded to completely mess up an entire flight that we had ordered--which she attempted to fix by basically tossing one of the correct tastings at my boyfriend... of course, after some rude remarks, for whatever reason. We ended up just using the advice from our first experience at the bar to prep the rest of our flight.
The next server who was working was Natalie, she was so nice and personable, we really enjoyed speaking with her. It happened to be her first night and she was nervous, but she did great with conversing with customers and checking on them. Unfortunately, the charcuterie board she brought out that night was pretty bad.. (haha, not that I would know since I don't put them together often), but my boyfriend's mom had never once had cheddar on a charcuterie board before with such thickly cut meats and no utensils to cut cheese with. Natalie was great nonetheless and definitely is a great addition to the business :)
The woman who ignored us behind the bar finally came out to the floor and began serving other customers, we decided to make some light conversation and discovered Natalie had no training prior to serving us that night... "because it was so busy." Which I thought was interesting because it was actually mostly empty when we arrived and it definitely seemed like there was time. Either way, it was an interesting experience to say the least.
The products of the business are tasty. Absinthe and chocolate were superb, the service however, has definitely gone downhill. I wished I could have written about my first experience all over again to really emphasize what a beautiful gem this place WAS, but I can't. Thanks for getting through this rant!
