16 Breezy California-Style Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"In the same vein as healthy-ish fast casual chains like Sweetgreen, Dig Inn, and Little Beet, this California-based chain’s premise is that each location is run by an executive chef with fine dining experience. It makes many of the ingredients (and condiments) in-house for dishes like a chipotle barbecue chicken sandwich and greenmarket chicken salad. Tender Greens certainly has its detractors, but it also has plenty of West Coast fans — plus, hospitality titan Danny Meyer as an investor." - Alexandra Ilyashov

I wanted to like this place. I had visited their Glendale location once a year ago before they closed down. And to my delight, the food there was good, tasty and affordable. But, as I said, they closed that location down. The only thing I didn’t like about the Glendale location is that they accept credit card payments only. Personally, I think it’s wrong for any restaurants in the United States not to accept cash from cash carrying people. But this is another topic for discussion at another time. Now as to the Pasadena location. I’ve driven by this tender greens numerous times on Colorado Boulevard without ever having noticed them, until one day I noticed them. So I made a mental note to come back and have a late lunch, which happened a few days ago To my surprise and disappointment, the chicken cob salad was subpar, served with black spots on the avocado, chicken chunks that I couldn’t fork and some other unrecognizable pieces that were just as hard to chew. This got me thinking as to why some of the chicken chunks were rock hard and others were tender. Then it dawned on me that was after 3 o’clock and maybe I was being served leftovers essentially. ( note the heat lamps over the meat section) Nothing was cooked fresh as they appear to cook some things in advance, particularly when they’re busy during pre-lunch hour, etc.. Oh, and another thing, I ordered the vegetable platter which had five different vegetables and appeared to be grilled cooked. If you check out the pictures, I think you would agree they over grill cooked the vegetables! Lot of charcoal edges everywhere and I didn’t finish the meal. And although I’m giving him only a one star review at this time. To be fair, I will come back on another day much earlier to see if I get a much better result, or if it’s a repeat. Stay tuned for my future update review coming soon…. Oh, they say a picture is worth 1000 words, or something to that effect! Check out my pics! Cheers

I had the pineapple basil lemonade with the tuna nicoise today. It is just as delicious as I remembered it but the portion is down by at least 30%. Couldn’t really taste the basil in the lemonade. Need to work on consistency.

Haven’t been here in awhile but it hasn’t changed (in a good way). Parking is the difficult part but there is plenty of seating inside. It’s clean and inviting inside. I like the lighting and always love their decor! I usually get their steak but this time got the Falafel and it was good! I especially liked the garlic sauce. It was a perfect environment for catching up with my friend for a few hours.

Found on Google maps and it was a great choice. Wonderful chicken and pesto sandwich, staff were kind and helpful. Enjoyed eating outside since the weather at home is -21°

Excellent service, very helpful staff. Hadn't eaten here in years and randomly went, the food is still delicious and served hot. I feel like the interior used to have more plants and greenery, it could use a little something to brighten it up. The interior doesn't effect the food and service though! Highly recommend!

I love their food! It’s healthy, but tastes good at the same time! I like the Chef’s special! Always on point with their menu! I enjoy their Hibiscus tea as well! Drinks that are not alcohol is refillable. Even their sparkling water is free! Get your drinks in a to go cup.

I've been coming here for a while but Eric always goes out of his way to be friendly to remember my name and to try to make me feel extra special.

The amount of protein in the plate was insulting. Very poor protein portion. To top it off the chicken was super dry. I used to love tender greens but it really fell off. This was definitely the last time i’ll be having it.
