"As the second owner of Tenjaku, Ryo Nishioka never forgets the spirit of his grandfather, who always made customers smile with his cuisine. The menu begins with an appetiser plate that reflects the mood of the season and proceeds to soup, decoratively arranged sashimi, and finally to tempura. The simple, familiar flavour of the tempura tofu, deep-fried and dressed in dipping sauce, warms the soul. The eve-catching hinoki cypress counter, made from a single plank, transforms the interior into a place of quiet dignity." - Michelin Inspector

It was a good Kaiseki diner, where I celebrated my birthday. Place has a cosy and warm atmosphere, which made us feel good and at ease. Chef’s attitude and engagement with the customers is worth mentioning, he gave good explanation of all dishes and ice could ask him questions, he was happy to reply. All servings were tasty, including quite a few tempura ones (mackerel being my personal favourite). There’s good selection of sake (and wine as well) to go with the food.

Everything is cooked perfectly. I just wish the chef had more assistants--3 and a half hours (with small amounts of food every 15 min or so) isn't the best pacing.

Best meal (and possibly the best experience) of our 10 days in Japan. The chef spoke decent enough English to explain each dish, but the warmth and care were apparent in any language. Very delicious food—we particularly loved the tofu tempura (very similar to tofu agedashi) and the Chinese tea. The ambiance was as beautiful as pictured, if not more. On a rainy evening the chef even walked us out with an umbrella make sure we got our taxi.

Beautifully coursed kaiseki centered around seasonal tempura. The chef is so kind and you can tell he loves his craft. The pace of the meal was slower than expected (it took us about 3 hours to get through the meal). The tempura fig paired with black miso is one of the most exceptional things I’ve had in all of Japan. The alcohol options were great as well. Service was very attentive.

Every dish was cooked to perfection and presented masterfully. The chef has great knowledge in sake and tea as well, and his selections complemented the meal nicely. It’ll be a long dinner (~3hrs), but it will be delightful. Can’t wait to go back next time we visit Kyoto.

Mindblowing experience at Tenjaku! Well deserved michelin star definitely. The tempura and all other dishes were so so good and so fresh and it wasn’t oily at all. The chef was also very friendly along with all other waiter and waitress. The meal ended on a very good note. The drinks here are not expensive at all! I had sake, umeshu, tea and water and bill came only 2000 yen i thought it was a mistake. Amazing and highly recommended.

Loved this tempura restaurant, the food was amazing and the owner was incredible. Loved that there is only one sitting per night, giving so much time to enjoy the experience and pace yourself. The owner is great, engages with the customers and he cares deeply. He has and extra dish at the end in case you are still hungry, held the umbrella outside of the restaurant, called a taxi for us and waited for the taxi to arrive with us. He is super friendly and even followed each other on Instagram. The food is amazing, but the dashi was mind blowing. I am still dreaming about it. + points the place is curated in the details, I loved the style of the pots and the counter. Also really loved the sakes and the sake cup selection. For each sake you order, you get to pick a beautiful piece of pottery with different designs Thanks for this experience and warm hospitality. It felt like being at home, in the other side of world and in a Michelin starred restaurant! Hope you can keep this vibe as the business grows ❤️
