Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Orange County mini-chain Tenori just opened an outpost at the Long Beach Exchange retail complex selling its line of onigiri and musubi. The plump rice balls, wrapped in seaweed and filled with ingredients like spicy tuna, pork belly, and honey shrimp, are priced at three for $11 and make for an affordable and filling snack or lunch." - Cathy Chaplin

Google
gave westernized asian fusion vibes: the pork belly and salmon were both very tender but it was just drowned in this heavy-sweet sauce that made it the only thing i could taste. the rice was way too crumbly for an onigiri, and the mountain of furikake toppings felt like it was trying to make up for the price tag and lack of depth; not bad, it's a minimalist-aesthetic spot with dressed up food.

Google
The onigiri was delicious! The pork was totally soft and good. The rice want hard and the seaweed wasn’t salty. I totally think this place has the best onigiri I’ve had so far, and I’m a big onigiri person. My kids love it as it’s something different!

Google
Tenori is a really delicious oniguri shop, the Korean barbecue is highly recommended for being juicy tender and just right, and the price is just right for a quick snack! I went on the weekend in the evening and I must say what really brought this restaurant to life was the amazing customer service of the host, Karen, she’s very professional, down to earth and honestly what I think any restaurant should be when it comes to customer service and satisfaction, if you haven’t been to Tenori when she’s there you simply haven’t been to Tenori! I highly recommend giving this place a try

I haven’t had the chance to try many of the places here at LBX but every time I eat here, rarely am I disappointed. Tenori is no exception. I was able to try some of the rice balls they sell here today and I was left feeling very pleased. To start off, the ordering process is very quick and easy. Their menu is also very simple with not much to choose from in terms of variety but it was still very good. I had a spicy salmon rice ball and a pork belly one too, some of the more popular items and I enjoyed them very much. I was thinking about getting a third one because I thought two wouldn’t be enough but it was quite filling. The girl working the front was also awfully kind. She took my order and had it out to me in less than five minutes. If I am ever here again, I’d definitely try something else on their menu.

Google
These Japanese rice balls are soooo delicious I come to LBX just to grab the 3 for $11 deal. The staff are quick efficient & friendly. The onigiri have the perfect texture & taste. My favorites are spicy salmon & kbbq. Would definitely recommend for a quick yet filling bite.

love

Google
I like tenori a lot! I've been to their other locations, and got the same consistent quality I enjoy! Though my BIGGEST gripe with Tenori's onigiri is the Nori is applied to the warm and steamy rice ball, as it is served! I would LOVE If I could keep the crunch of the roasted seaweed- but it ends up being soggy and brittle. Will keep coming regardless!

Google
The honey shrimp option was so delicious

The guy was on his phone, threw my friends food in his togo bag and didnt even bag my order when it was a togo order 😞😞 The food was really good tho. I went there today around 3 i hope whoever is the manager sees this and deals with his attitude

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Affordable onigiri and the concept is so simple, yet so elevated. I have tried the salmon, bulgolgi, tuna, shrimp, and more--- my ultimate favorite is the salmon! It's hard to take a foodie pic of something so simple, but the flavor is there! Give this place a shot and you won't regret it!

Yelp
It's amazing to see Tenori carry it's success for an affordable, portionable and amazing tasting onigiris and musubis within the Los Angeles area for others to enjoy. To simply put; each onigiri and musubi carries it's own weight in taste, enjoyment and profiles. Allow me to explain: Spicy Salmon; spicy with a kick! That taste of salmon is apparent and plentiful KBBQ; Savory, tender and has that korean bbq taste we all know and love at those ayce spots Pork Belly; Fatty and lean, perfect ratio and so soft in each bite Tuna with Mayo; creaminess and airy fish taste go together? Well yeah it does actually, especially here Honey Shrimp; well battered, sweet and crispy in every shrimp bite Mentai; SPICY! but unique in it's own way especially when it's salty and savory in this fish eggy way Spam Musubi; you already know! Carries that same fulfilling taste and size! It's funny to see others enjoying it especially when you're in environment of other eateries, plenty of seating and more smells of different establishments while enjoying this cozy snack. It definitely feels unique compared to the other spots inside LBX. Let alone the order kiosks and onigiri makers are fast to each order! You shouldn't be waiting too long.

Yelp
I've visited the Stanton Rodeo 39 location and this location is significantly better! You order on an iPad and they call your name. I ordered the 3 for $11: salmon, pork belly, honey shrimp. They're smaller than a traditional original but are nicely individually wrapped and had generous filling and seasoning! Rice is still work, everything is made to order. Salmon was my favorite, followed by pork belly then shrimp. I would stick with the fish options, meat was a bit dry and the shrimp was battered and fried so it was a bit much with the rice. Overall still yummy! Nothing like fresh warm rice and seaweed. Definitely recommend if you want something small inside the Hangar!

Yelp
Located in the Hangar food hall at Long Beach Exchange near Long Beach Airport, Tenori serves made to order onigiri. They have been popping up with locations all over the place and, though I've seen it around, this was my first time trying it. I have to say that I liked it a lot more than I thought I would like it and I think it's a great addition to the food court. I got 3 onigiri for $11 and went with tuna with mayo, spicy salmon, and KBBQ (Korean BBQ) flavors to diversify my exposure to their menu. Here are my thoughts: 1) The rice they use on the onigiri is served warm and it's cooked absolutely perfectly 2) The fish is simple, but it does the job. I do not think that I'd get tuna with mayo again, but I might get spicy salmon or spicy tuna again. The fish resembles what you'd get in the can, but it does the job. 3) I really liked the KBBQ onigiri as the meat, rice, and onion combo was nicely balanced and very satisfying. The food came out fast, it was very filling, and I felt extremely satisfied. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it. I will likely come back to try more. I think I'd be more inclined to get more of the meat onigiri than the fish onigiri, but it's all pretty satisfying and the flavors are quite different. If you're at the Hangar, this is a pretty solid option!

Yelp
Got acquainted with Tenori thanks to a Yelp event. It's a good option for a quick and light lunch or a snack if you are shopping or doing errands in this area. However, it's not as good as Sunny Blue, in my opinion.

Yelp
If you're a fan of onigiri, this place is an absolute gem! The onigiri here is top-notch, with flavorful, perfectly seasoned rice that makes every bite a delight. The fillings are fresh and generous, adding even more to the experience. Parking is hassle-free with plenty of spaces available, so no need to stress about finding a spot. The seating area, located in the hangar, has a unique and casual vibe that's both spacious and welcoming. It's a great spot to enjoy your food, whether you're grabbing a quick bite or staying a bit longer. The customer service was also impressive--friendly and attentive staff who made sure everything was just right.

Yelp
I might think about rice balls everyday. Today I stopped in for the shrimp honey, but I wanted them all. Spicy salmon and tuna are so good. 3 for $11 is perfect. One cost me $4.41 for one. I love that nothing is raw, so I don't have to worry about any risk for me or the kiddos. My sweetie likes his without bonito flake, and there's an option to leave off. Self ordering and checkout. Cashless. Wait for a text and your name to be called. Ready fast.

Yelp
Came here back in October. I guess it had been a while since I'd gone to the Hangar because it was my first time seeing it when I went that time. The menu is simple, clean and offers a good variety of flavors and proteins. The employee who took my order was very patient for this first timer. I went with the 3pc to try different things. I ordered the KBBQ, honey shrimp and tuna w/ mayo. They were all very flavorful. The rice was perfectly cooked and the insides were plentiful. It was the perfect, balanced bite of rice and fillings. I'll have to go back to try some of the other flavors.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by this location after pilates and it was the perfect meal after a workout. We got spicy salmon and pork belly. Both were so flavorful and delicious. I was tempted to buy more. Next time I come, I want to try all the other flavors on the menu. The service was quick and the staff were very friendly. This place is located in LBX so it was like a marketplace. Lots of other restaurants in the area you can try as well

Yelp
I absolutely love Tenori Onigiri. The tuna with mayo is my favorite, and I also have tried the honey shrimp. The service is quick, and they have self service computers to take the order with. They are not very big in size, and 3 of them is a good portion for a meal. This is located within the Hangar in Long Beach and there is plenty of parking outside and along the building.

Yelp
Since discovering this spot, I've easily been back 10 times in the last 2 months. The onigiri is just that good, and the price is totally worth it--especially the 3 for $11 deal. I always take it to go, and it's still warm when I get home (I avoid eating inside because LBX is usually packed). The only area for improvement is the service. While the touchpads for ordering are convenient, some people aren't familiar with onigiri or the menu, which can slow things down. There's also very little interaction between the staff and customers, aside from when they call your name or number to let you know your food is ready. It'd be great if there was another counter where staff could help guide customers more personally and create a more engaging experience. That said, I still love this place and will definitely keep coming back!

Yelp
We stopped by Tenori because we wanted a little snack while we decided what we wanted for lunch. However we were pleasantly surprised on many fronts, from the reasonable pricing to the quick and easy service. We tried the pork belly onigiri here and it was no short of amazing. After one bite my boyfriend and I both looked up in awe. The onigiri was warm, the seaweed and furikake added a nice saltiness and it was all tied together with the soft and tender pork belly. After devouring it made us want to try the other options for a next trip!

Yelp
I like the new addition to the Hangar's selection. It's somewhat healthier than the fried stuff, and the flavors are unique and interesting. Each one is quite substantial, and it's larger than I expected. The seasoning on top provides an essential taste to the filling. I especially enjoyed the mental, but the pork belly was very nice too. Ordering with the kiosk could be a little bit confusing, and it's easy to overpay for all the sauces. I got one sauce for three servings, and even though it's just a dollar each for the sauce, I don't think it added anything to the flavor. Even if you order three of those, it's hard to be satisfied as a full meal.

Yelp
Craving riceballs last weekend and I happened to be in the area. I had tried Tenori at the Rodeo in Stanton. Its been a minute since I visited the LB Hangar. It gets pretty busy, but lunch that Sunday wasn't too bad. +1 and I decided to enjoy the sun and ate that their outside seating area. We were able to find seats when we started scoping the area. Although it was a bit of a wait, flavor for the riceballs were there! I had the tuna mayo and the Kbbq. They came out fresh and warm. The furikake and the seaweed gave them a nice crunch as well. I was not disappointed with my order.

Yelp
Returning back here for their yummy musubi's. They are located inside the Hangar at the Long Beach Exchange. Yelp removed my original review from the other day and the pictures as well. I came back on 12/8/24 as a paying customer here met up with my HS friends. The gal who helped me with the 3 for 1 remembered me from my first visit. So I got 2 tuna mayo and 2 honey shrimp of course both were delicious. They have other variations. Overall had a wonderful time with the yummy musubi's and excellent service. I'll be back again.

Yelp
TENORRRIIII NEVER LEAVE ME Tried them in stanton and quickly became addicted, but that isn't very close to me so I was hoping they would get a local spot and they finally did here!! so of course I went immediately. It's self ordering on the kiosk, which makes it very easy to order and then you pick it up at the register. The guy who handed me my order was very nice! But the food preparers looked unhappy to be there and they are very visible so it gives off a negative impression. I honestly just think they were focused on their tasks but no smiling or talking or anything. Another place was here before so they're still working with the decor, but the one in stanton is very simple and cute and i know this place will be the same. Cant wait to return!!!

Yelp
Sooooo so good. Hidden gem in LBX. Hits the spot. Did I mention YUMMY . I got the spicy salmon, and if you don't eat seafood, they have bulgogi as well
google avatar

Carly R.

Yelp
Wow! Was pleasantly surprised by this place! $11 for 3 pieces of onigiri! How can you beat that?! The rice is nice and soft and there is a good amount of filing inside. I've tried the tuna mayo, pork belly, and honey shrimp. You can't go wrong with any of the choices. We picked these up on our way to the snow and they were the perfect snack to eat in the car. The food comes out quickly so you shouldn't have to wait long if you're in a rush.
google avatar

Anne G.

Yelp
So yummy! I tried the spicy tuna one and it had just enough spice without going overboard. The tuna was delicious and not dry at all. The crispiness of the seaweed and the warm, perfectly cooked rice was a perfect combo with the fish. For a little snack, one will be sufficient but if you're going for a full meal, you'll need at least 3-4. Quick service too!
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
First time here at the Hanger. We've been to the one at Rodeo 39 in Stanton. This place has 2 kiosks that you order from and the menu is small. which makes it super easy. You get a better deal when you order 3 for $11. I ended up order 6: pork belly, tuna with mayo, spicy tuna, kbbq, and honey shrimp. Overall, everything was good. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Brian Q.

Yelp
This is one of the newer spots in the Long Beach Hangar, and they have a very simple menu - your choice of meat in a rice ball! It gave me vibes of those "donuts" that they'd eat on Pokemon, and they definitely fit the bill of comfort food and make for a nice quick bite to eat. I tried the trio set; the honey shrimp was nice and crispy, the pork belly was flavorful, and the bulgogi was a bit dry. Service was nice and quick, but if you want sauce, you have to order that on the side, although I didn't feel it was needed.
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
When you're looking for a quick lunch or snack, come to the Hanger at LBX. Lots of food suggestions and quick eats, but we decided on some onigiri... We ordered the spicy salmon, tuna with mayo and pork belly and All so delicious wrapped up in rice and seaweed and sprinkled with furikaki a Japanese spice mixture.. tenori , it was amazing !!!see you again and again!!
google avatar

Joaquin V.

Yelp
Tenori is a great new spot at The Hangar in Long Beach. They offer a variety of options, with their best sellers being pork belly, spicy salmon, and KBBQ. The best way to describe it is a rice ball shaped like a triangle, stuffed with your choice of protein. I picked up two--one for myself and one for my wife--but I definitely should've gotten more because they were delicious. Ordering is simple: head to the counter, place your order on a screen, and in just a few minutes, your food is ready. It wasn't too busy when I visited. Seating my be difficult as the Hanger has many places to eat but you will enjoy the ambiance because there is a lot going on. I highly recommend this place--try it, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Salmon nigiri was great! Would def come back for that. -1 star for having bonito flavor on the pork and beef. It was good on the salmon, but I think a non-fish furikake would work better with those meats.
google avatar

Erika C.

Yelp
It was self-service and easy to use! There was an employee who was kind and eager to help if needed. I got the 3 for $11 and they are usually $4 each. All the flavors were pretty good except the spicy salmon was too fishy tasting for me. The tuna mayo and kbbq were really good! I would highly recommend those! The ambiance was very clean as well.
google avatar

Bryan T.

Yelp
Heard about a new food spot at the Hangar so thought I try it out today. They specialize in a variety of onigiris. Service was nonexistent as you order from a kiosk. I ordered the 3 for $11 deal and picked pork belly, spicy salmon, and kbbq. They were just okay. I only liked the spicy salmon. The kbbq tasted kind of bland and under seasoned. The pork belly was very dry.
google avatar

Ladydi P.

Yelp
Friendly service and great food! I will definitely be a regular here! The pork belly is outstanding.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
This place was super fire! The food was well made and the service was fast. We got the 3 for $11 and all the flavors were yum. Nothing but good things to say!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Located in the LBX Hangar, Tenori is an awesome place for an affordable snack, meal, or something in between. Their menu is simple as it only contains 1 main item, but the variety they offer of different onigiris is awesome. Each onigiri is $4 a piece or you can get a set of 3 for $11. I tried the Pork Belly and the Honey Shrimp onigiri and both were incredible! The filling of both onigiri I got was warm and tasted very freshly made. I will definitely be back to try a couple more soon!
google avatar

Daniela S.

Yelp
Great to-go snack or small lunch. The dried garlic and onion topping was delicious and a little sweet. The spicy protein options, however, are not spicy at all.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
I ordered through uber eats, it was still so good! They put the seaweed wrap on the side so it doesn't lose its crunch! Honestly package so well too! Love it so much!

Mercrede N.

Yelp
The food was salty AF. It had no flavor. The ajummas that made the rice balls should get a ticket from the food police for making one of the worst rice balls I have ever had in my life!!!

Quinn H.

Yelp
So far so good. This location (LBX) is not as busy outside of peak lunch rush. Service - Quick & friendly. Order at kiosk Food - Consistent and delicious. Rice is tender and warm. Nori is crunchy. Decent amount of filling & toppings. Highly recommend to eat right away or it can get soggy from the heat I usually get the 3 piece special for $11 Tuna Mayo - Mild flavor and you can taste the mayo Spicy Salmon - Not spicy but still yummy Mentai (Fish Roe) - Spicier than other places. This is one of the saltier flavors but not overwhelming
google avatar

Shanell C.

Yelp
Located in LBX this new little spot is super good. They specialize in onigiri and ot is very good. All food is made fresh to order and all ingredients are so FRESH. PRICES ARE SO REASONABLE. $11 for 3 or $4 each. So far I have tried the tuna, beef, spam, and shrimp. All are amazing. Very big and filled perfectly. Customer service is friendly and professional. Check them out if in the LBX.
google avatar

Ivy C.

Yelp
AMAZINNGG!! Not only was the food good but the customer service was top notch! When I came in with my family we were all starving but weren't familiar with either anything on the menu or the area! Our server Stephen was a blessing in disguise. He gave us directions and even some things to sight see in Long Beach! (p.s Stephen if you're reading this hill top was amazing at night ) Not only that, but he frequently made sure my family and I were comfortable! Top Notch Service you'd only be able to find once in a blue moon!
google avatar

Mami Y.

Yelp
I ordered 3 combo onigiri and they were very good. The fillings were generous portion and the mental onigiri was authentic!

Alex M.

Yelp
We were a group of 4 seniors. We wanted to try Tenori in LBX Long Beach. Immediately the girl in the counter offered to help with our order. She sensed that we are not familiar with "how to do it". ZIARA is her name. She was very helpful and funny. Not intimidating. She suggested what and how to order. We did not go to another booth because with her we did not feel intimidated. Thank you Ziara and Jazmin.
google avatar

May N.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The rice balls are so fresh. It's simple, but it's delicious, efficient, affordable. Probably my favorite stand at LBX! Will definitely be coming again
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Workers were friendly. Self-serve kiosk. I purchased spam musubi, KBBQ onigiri, and tuna mayo onigiri. The seaweed and rice were delicious. However, the tuna made me throw up really bad. I threw up everything I ate. I'm never returning back here.

Julius Q.

Yelp
Fast service, delicious food! It is a definite must stop when we are at Rodeo 39. It is a family favorite.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
The perfect snack! The musubis (rice balls) were made fresh. The rice was soft and fluffy, and the nori (seaweed wrap) was crisp and crunchy. The prices are really reasonable. I highly recommend Tenori in the LBX hangar!

Fran A.

Yelp
Quick filling bite to eat! Was comparable to Jerry I had in Japan! If you love rice and fish, this is a great quick bite

Cynthia P.

Yelp
Finally got to try this new place at the LBX Hanger and it didn't disappoint. I got the KBBQ, tuna with mayo and spam. They were all really good. A good ratio of filling and rice. Excited to try the rest!

Sarah N.

Yelp
Finally! A local Tenori has come to Long Beach! I came in on Friday to check out the new LBX location and was pleasantly surprised with the ambiance and attentive customer service. I've only tried a couple of the onigiri flavors and was impressed with the amount of knowledge the staff had. A young man assisted me and was very happy to inform me of the best flavors and deals. The ambiance is very welcoming and I feel comfortable coming again by myself because I know I will be happily assisted! Salmon Onigiri is top notch!

Brendan N.

Yelp
I came to Tenori Monday around 5PM last week excited to see that a location opened up in Long Beach near my work. Food was spot on but the cashier there was incredibly rude! I simply asked for extra napkins and she seemed like I was doing her a major inconvenience. Something I will for sure remember!

bob f.

Yelp
I wont deny the service is amazing cery fast and easy but the food tasted almost canned. The tuna was very liquidy and wasnt the best tasting. Moreover the spicy tuna was just sriracha and the canned tuna. The salmon was very hard and wasnt pleasant to eat. Enjoyed the customer service but food wasnt good. Wouldnt go again.

May O.

Yelp
SO DAMN GOOD. I can't get enough of this place. Great service, easy ordering process. DELICIOUS!

Jennifer Nguyen

Yelp
Amazing service from a young man that seems to be in college. Extremely kind and welcoming when I didn't know which flavors to get, and his suggestion was amazing! I couldn't help but tip this young man. Would definitely go again!

Rodger P.

Yelp
Food was good, terrible customer service from the young man. Had to walk up to get my order while other customers were handed theirs.
