One year later, my brother, his son, my wife, and I came back to Tenuta's Deli (founded in 1950) in Kenosha to pick some things for a housewarming and birthday party. This time we came after 11 so was able to pick up some grilled sandwiches, along with alcohol, and snacks. All were good, and I got some pictures this time.
One can smell the sausages cooking on the outdoor grill as soon as you enter the area. The parking lot is small, but has fast turnover so a little patience will pay off. Before you enter the main entrance, you will pass by the outdoor grill and ordering counter (where you can place an order for grilled and indoor sandwiches as well). There was a line, but it moved fast. After my brother paid, we found a shaded table for the four of us and my wife went inside to get some gifts. The food came to us as soon as it was made, so came in batches (some from the grill, bombers from inside). All were really good, and prices are the same from one year ago.
Grilled: Usinger's German Style Bratwurst ($4.99 each) - got two: one topped with sauerkraut, the other with sweet peppers. Usingers is by far the most expensive sausage at grocery stores in the SE Wisconsin area, and is the best tasting. German style means it's a white brat, made with pork and not smoked. Toppings are generous and not extra cost...each bite was such a great contrast in texture and flavor profiles.
Bombers: I had to have a meatball sandwich with cheese ($5.49) and hot giardiniera, and it was as good as I remember. My wife got a roast beef ($5.99) with hot giardiniera: it's Tenuta's version of an Italian Beef and was excellent, with the roast beef not overcooked and the gravy being flavorful but not too much. The hot giardiniera was so good, I ended up buying a bottle inside as a gift.
Really glad I got a chance to try the grilled sandwiches this time, and happy they haven't raised prices from last year. Their deli and store does a brisk business, so thinking the grill is one way to bring people in.
