Food Tells a Story in Dystopian TV Thrillers Like ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ | Eater

"A modest greasy spoon retains solid counter service and plucky waitresses, but its staples have shifted to reflect occupation—workers now slurp ramen on lunch breaks where chicken noodle soup might once have been the norm—illustrating subtle cultural blending and the persistence of comfort dining under foreign rule." - Whitney Friedlander

Had a blast celebrating our friend's Birthday! So cool that you can bring your own alcohol and have a good time amongst others. The food was well seasoned and fresh! I really enjoyed my scallops with the NY strip. My kids enjoyed their food and the teppan show as well.

Google
Christmas evening, we had a wonderful time, and a great show. The food was so, so good. The staff was friendly and fun.

Devan Rottman

Google
Went here on a Monday, absolutely amazing, the entire staff (shout out Von) were incredibly professional and skilled. They made an onion into a volcano and a train, we were thoroughly impressed. Get the filet mignon --it is fire. Definitely going back to try the scallops.

Google
The sweetest, kindest, most attentive staff. Thank you thank you thank you! We had the most delicious meal, wow. I ordered steak and scallops, my partner ordered steak and salmon. The scallops were fantastic, highly recommend. Thank you Teppan Steak House 🙏 we will be back very soon

Google
Great cooks, but the servers on Sunday afternoons don't look like they wanted to be here....the old oriental manager stood clueless as we asked for various things like more drinks, spoons and napkins from each waitperson and never received any. Pretty disappointing after an average of $35 per person for a group of 6. Customer service needs to improve or we won't be back.

Google
food was “ok” nothing special and the fried rice is cooked now in the back. It didn’t taste as good as other places I’ve been. For what I got I feel the bill was high, but the bathroom finished the night off in a very GROSS way. It’s disgusting ! Dirty DIRTY dirty. Worse then a gas station ! I can’t believe they have such dirty restrooms in a restaurant ! The smell made me sick, so I ended up paying $80 and left wanting to vomit. Not ok.

Google
Great place to eat! BYOB is the best! Calamari, shrimp, and scallops were real good. The new york steak was a bit chewey but everything else was great. Service was also good and they were busy. I'll definitely be back.

Joe

Google
Not worth the price. The fried rice is all dried out from baking in the rice cooker all day since it was pre-made who knows how long before it gets served. Don't waste your money.

Yelp
Prices are very expensive but you get a good amount of food. It's delicious too, especially the shrimp! Chicken and steak are pretty good but hands down I prefer the shrimp

Yelp
First of all Omg !! Well this is my favorite spot but I was never able to do a review because this place has its ups and downs , Years ago when the elder couple ran this restaurant it was clean fun inexpensive and everyone there was happy , now This place has gone down so bad ! They have 2 younger men running the place and they are rude , arrogant and a lot other stuff !! I see there is poor management!! The restrooms (woman) are sooooo dirty super gross I could not bring myself to take pictures ! It smelled like rotten fish ! The sink is broken and paper towels are there to cover a leak . It is very sad that these two men brought this place down so much ! They need to hire some one to clean up the place and put order back into this restaurant and make it how it used to be .. make it great again !

Yelp
Been here many times and love it!' Food is always so good, flavorful and love the entertainment of it being cooked before you. Customer service and ambiance is perfect especially for celebrations, shoutout to the staff because recently we had a party of 16 and they were so sweet and helpful. I know 16 can be chaotic and stressful but they all were so sweet. Food is always delicious and extra plus is that you can bring your own drinks in alcohol included so that's pretty cool and convenient.

Yelp
A must visit teppan dinner between 4-6 for the twilight specials! Start with miso soup, continue with salad, then continue with the chef creating your meal in front of you! An onion fire volcano, steaming train complete with train whistles and a flying veggie to catch in your mouth! This is a fun show that really compliments the delicious meal! The fried rice is a must, even though they make it in the back post Covid, the shrimp that comes with each meal as well as classic hibachi veggies (onion, carrots, broccoli, zucchini and bean sprouts) are covered with oil and butter, salt and pepper for the best taste! The steak is amazing, if you like medium get med rare as it cools more while you wait for it to cool. The kids steak hibachi meal is $16, same amount of meat and veggies, just no salad or soup. We love this restaurant for just our little family or big groups, it is always delicious! We will definitely be back! Pro tip: arrive early, there is almost always a wait!

Yelp
Good place for large groups or a family dinner. Arrive early, this place fills up. We visited over the holidays and it was packed. Food portions are decent.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff and service was amazing. Thank you to the busser who brought extra sauces. Thank you! It did feel a little rush. I felt we didn't get to enjoy our dinner because our waiter brought out the check immediately after we got all our food. I was going to order dessert but I felt like I was rushed to leave. They did have additional parties outside waiting so I'm assuming that's why we felt rushed so they can accommodate them. Only reason I'm giving them 4 stars. However I'll come back again and update my review. Overall I enjoyed the food. I always look forward to the salad.

Yelp
If you want experience, definitely come here! You will have meal and show. My family and I came back in May to celebrate my boyfriend visiting from the east coast. It's delicious and the experience is always fun to watch. The cooks do a very god job of keeping you entertained and each show is different. They are fun and do a good job. The food was delicious! Especially the fried rice. The vegetables have a good flavor and i love how they season it. I am very picky with my vegetables and they did a good job preparing it. I love going here and will defiantly come back to experience this again. It's such a family establishment and all family would have a great time here.

Yelp
OMG! This is one of favorite spots to grab a meal. Great date night atmosphere with the wife, bring your own beer or wine. Can't wait until we go back
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Food was outstanding they even have an early bird menu until 6pm daily. Staff very friendly from the greeter to the cooks. The atmosphere in the restaurant was nice and pleasant.

Lei Z.

Yelp
The service is always excellent. They're extremely sweet. But every single time I have come, I order my meat either medium rare or medium(because usually when I order medium rare it turns out raw) the meat has been extremely raw. Spending hundreds here is very frustrating when you enjoy the experience and gag at the food because it's completely raw.
google avatar

Yelp
Food sucks Entertainment lacks Busboy wasn't doing his job Best thing on the menu was the lemonade AND if you have 6+ in your party they tax you 18%

Terry G.

Yelp
The food was way over cooked shrimp was hard and vegetables tasted burned definitely not worth the price ...
google avatar

Andrea J.

Yelp
Overall really good experience. Staff friendly and responsive, food was tasty. Enjoyed the teppan experience a few differences between here and the big chain teppan restaurant we have been to before. They don't cook the fried rice in front of you sadly. But the other food they do cook in front of you is great. A lot of vegetables and bean sprouts (yay!). Hibachi new york steak was good! A few sauce differences and miso soup vs japanese clear soup but we left happy and full. We can recommend it and liked the twilight menu.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
Been going to Teppan for years, a long time favorite. Staff is always kind, and I love that the chefs are always interacting with guests. Bonus points when they fling a piece of carrot into your mouth. Ambiance is always lively. Food is always so so good. I'd drown in that white sauce if I could. No reservations, and it's always busy, so if you have a larger group, be prepared to wait 45min--1.5 hrs. Worth it.

Yelp
Came in to celebrate a birthday with a huge group of 17 and had a wonderful time Food: I was surprised how delicious the food was. I had the steak hibachi which included veggies and your choice of fried or white rice (I had white rice). The steak was tender and cooked well and was delicious with the 3 dipping sauces provided. I also tried the fried rice and it was bland. I had a Sapporo beer as well. Service: To be seated and service did take some time but it was also very understandable considering our large group size and time of service. Our chef made our teppanyaki experience fun. Price: very affordable price for the meal considering how many sides were included Highlight: the steak was cooked perfectly to my liking
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
The food was okay. But the service was the worst ever!!!!! We went for a birthday we had to ask the server to take plates away she expected us to hand her the plates then got upset.

Tamana S.

Yelp
This place smells like Meat Market once you enter! When they start cooking it changes to smell of burnt food. They add too much of junk to the meat, seafood and vegetable that kills the real taste of everything. Overwhelming amount of fume without enough air circulation and ventilation gave me a headache. It is also very noisy and chaotic environment. Poor quality in every way. Waste of money and time.
google avatar

Yelp
Our golf group enjoyed a terrific post golf round dinner last night. Great format and layout of tables. Easy communication with your group. Food was terrific and service was wonderful. Look forward to returning soon. Phili

Yelp
I ordered dinner from here tonight through Grubhub so I cannot speak to the service or restaurant itself. However, I can speak to the food I ate. I really wanted scallops but was surprised by how expensive it was so I settled for the fried rice bowl with salmon filet. It said the salmon was 5oz and was pleasantly surprised at how substantial the piece of fish felt that I received. It was cooked perfectly and not overcooked at all. The zucchini, onions, and fried rice were absolutely delicious. I would absolutely eat food from here again, though based on some of the recent reviews, it sounds like take out or delivery may be a better option than dine in, which does defeat a lot of the fun that typically comes with this kind of meal. Though I do like to give places a chance and not just go based off reviews. Knocking off 1 star because it does feel a bit pricey for what it is...especially for the entrees which have steak or scallops.

Yelp
We celebrated my son's birthday today at Teppan (his choice). We had frequented here a lot when he was little, so definitely felt nostalgic. We had the best servers. They were very attentive and kind. They even sang him happy birthday . The ambiance was great. The food was awesome as well! It was my father's first time here and he loved it. The shrimp is always the best with the white sauce and veggies yum! Highly recommend! Definitely arrive at least 30 minutes before your targeted dinner time as it does get really busy. Thank you again for making my son's birthday memorable!

R B.

Yelp
The food was great, I got a steak and shrimp combo while my family got chicken and calamari all were delicious I went there on a Sunday night, the crew seemed very tired and just exhausted, and overwhelmed by the work.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Good is wonderfully good. Cooked right in front of you. Also bring your own alcohol. Service is good the staff and cooks very friendly and funny. The new place is very big table fits at least 8 to 9 people per table very cheerful vibe.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Terrible service and management, this restaurant only cares about making money and not the experience of the guest. We had a birthday party of seven that was forced to sit with two individuals on their cell phones as I sat on the other side of the table. Discussed with management and the owner and they could care less. I will not be back to this awful restaurant ever.

Dayana L.

Yelp
Favorite place ! Love the food , I used to like when they would make the rice in front of us but honestly it's still soooo good. The service is nice everyone is so kind to me! I love it here . Good price for the amount of food you get !
google avatar

Keya M.

Yelp
Fun Fact: I have lived here in Oxnard for over 40 years...this place has been around for over 30 years...and this is my first visit. Not sure what I have been waiting for because it was so good! My chicken was tender and the veggies were fresh. The teppan chef was entertaining! Location is easy to find-plenty of parking-and depending on the time of your visit there could be a little wait.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Food and entertainment was excellent. Watching the chef cook is always fun. I ordered the steak and my wife ordered the chicken. Everything is fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is cool also. The reason for the four stars is the service could use some work. Had to ask twice to get a refill on my tea. Had to ask twice for a new fork. One thing that is super cool is BYOB. You can bring in your ice chest full of beer and drink. Everything was nice. Remember when you get your bill they already add 18% gratuity... so don't forget that. Sit down before 6pm for happy hour dinner prices... don't forget that.

Yelp
food was "ok" nothing special and the fried rice is cooked now in the back. It didn't taste as good as other places I've been. For what I got I feel the bill was high, but the bathroom finished the night off in a very GROSS way. It's disgusting ! Dirty DIRTY dirty. Worse then a gas station ! I can't believe they have such dirty restrooms in a restaurant ! The smell made me sick, so I ended up paying $80 and left wanting to vomit. Not ok. After seeing these pics why would you want to eat here ? Imagine the state of the kitchen !
google avatar

Devin B.

Yelp
BYOB!! Whattt and coolers allowed !! Growing up in the area and living there for the majority of my early adult life and this was my first time here! The fact that it is byob is weird to me. I've heard of bringing your wine to places and having a corking fee but bringing modello time is a bit awkward kind of takes the restaurants ability to keep control of the alcohol served and limit those who've had a few too many. The teppanyaki was standard but a little disappointed that their fried rice was cooked offsite and brought in bowls and wasn't part of the show and experience being cooked in front of you. The entrees cooked to perfection and the entertainment of it all was fun for everyone in the group who has not experienced it prior. A good meal good entertainment and great staff who were all very friendly.

Angelia G.

Yelp
Great place to eat with friends and family. More specifically for any kind of family event this is a must go to spot. The steak was amazing and the vibes were great.

Mark F.

Yelp
Been in the county for 33 years and first time at the delightful restaurant. I have been missing the nice family ambiance, great service, and delicious tepanyaki food. Great experience and will return soon.

Lane F.

Yelp
Went for my birthday dinner. Didn't have much of a wait which was good. I've certainly been to better teppanyaki restaurants, with better menu options. Taste was average. Seems like they try and run through as many customers as possible in the shortest time possible. Staff were friendly enough. Atmosphere was below average. Teppanyaki chef seemed more interested in everyone else besides those whom he was cooking for. Seemed very distracted. If you want a quick teppanyaki dinner this is the place of you're willing to sacrifice ambience and quality.
google avatar

F N.

Yelp
Overall the chefs performance was good and entertaining but the quality of the meats is mediocre- If you order fried rice as an up charge it is not made on the teppan table! Instead comes from the back and is not lovely- Will try again but not super impressed

Destiny R.

Yelp
The whole family fun hibachi experience at teppan is gone. My server Alexa didn't do a good job of checking in on us, the busboy helped us out more. Then to charge $1 for sriracha is just really silly including the sushi bar that only serves California rolls. Osabi has my vote for best hibachi in Ventura county.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
No hot sauce?! Are you kidding me? Because of the "shortage" I'm sorry what shortage I was at a similar place a couple of weeks ago and they did have hot sauce. Anyways, the food quality is worse than I remember, and now with no hot sauce I'm not coming back. What a waste of money. Don't come here
google avatar

Rudy H.

Yelp
Very entertaining meal. Food is cooked at your table. Teppanyaki. I ordered the shrimp and chicken combination with fried rice. All expertly cooked. Very tender shrimp. I would dip the proteins in the white and teriyaki sauce. All the vegetables that were prepared were excellent. The miso soup and green salad were superb. Highly recommend restaurant. Buen provecho!
google avatar

Yelp
Food . . . Amazing! Service. . .SPECTACULAR! Shout out to our waitress, Janet! Overall, an unforgettable experience! Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food with awesome "show". Steak & chicken dinner with friend rice is my go to. Yummy yummy!

Yelp
The cook was very boring! They don't serve you anything for your birthday. Steak was ok

Yelp
As with most places coming out of COVID, Teppan Steak House is struggling to regain its identity. There have been many changes to the menu and presentation of which I am not a fan. The Good: They still have the twilight specials which offers a discounted, limited menu from 4-6pm. If you are good with dinning early, this is a great option. B.Y.O.B. is still allowed. While I just cant bring myself to lug a cooler into a restaurant, it is an interesting option if you are looking to enjoy libations outside of what is offered by the restaurant. Presentation: you still get a great show by the teppan cooks. I'm mean who doesn't love the old onion choo-choo bit. The service was very attentive and friendly The Bad: While I understand, and somewhat support the decision, they no longer offer sushi outside of California rolls. I can't say that I always ordered sushi when I was there but it was a nice option. They no longer make the fried rice at the table. If you decide to "upgrade" to fried rice, they will bring it out in a bowl. That change alone will keep me from coming back. I love getting the rice fresh and hot off the griddle. Food quality has dropped off. You know you're in for an adventure when you start off with cold miso soup and warm salad. I had the NY and Halibut. NY was cooked well but the Halibut was dry. Not great but it was all edible. The Ugly: The dinning hall has a rough patina on everything and is built for function over aesthetics. The grill used for our meal was falling apart in the edges and not as clean as you'd expect from a Teppan restaurant. The cooking surface was all good but not much detail has been paid to the outer regions of the grill. I hate to lose this place as an option but after my latest experience, I will be looking for a new location.

Yelp
I have been here quite a few times. They have great food & service. And there's always something going on in the background showing off their cooking skills.

RoseMarie T.

Yelp
Delicious food and it's good for takeout which can be a real hit a miss sometimes but it's always good.

A M.

Yelp
I was disappointed because he didn't make the fried rice on the teppan. The fried rice was premade in the kitchen. It tasted old and cold. Fish was too dry. My family ordered the rib eyes and it was good. The food was a little too salty even I had asked him to put less salt. The service was good. I added a star for it.

Daniel D.

Yelp
Great service and the food was real good. Recommend to get their before 6pm and get the twilight prices

David R.

Yelp
Best in the 805 forsure always looking forward dinning here always served well with good quality food.
google avatar

Neil R.

Yelp
Not bad for the price. Appetizers are priced good as well. Food was good but something was overly salted. I thought it was weird that they cooked the fried rice at a different table then brought it over...it kinda took away from the experience. *****BE CAREFUL...my first time here and they added an extra $1 to the tip. They probably do it to most customers and it'll add up eventually to a good amount.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
This is low end teppan. They are absolutely not the same as they were 10 years ago. Rice is cooked in the back, meat was cooked before veg. Zero presentation. This is not ok. Not close to good teppan.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Came during lunch hours and it was pretty slow. Ordered a lunch combo which included steak and chicken with appetizers such as miso soup and salad. The FOOD: The miso soup was watery and bland. The salad was sad... it just didn't taste good and the dressing could've been better. The steak and chicken (as well as all the other proteins) had the same kind of seasoning, butter, and flavoring liquids. It tasted alright though. Some of my party ordered seafood and the lemon carried over into the chicken so it tasted a little weird. Also - the meals came with three sauces, a white mayo based sauce for seafood, teriyaki with sesame on top, and also a ginger sauce. I found myself using the sauces most of the time as it tasted better than what the chef had prepared. The Teppan EXPERIENCE: The experience really depends on which chef you get. The entire experience is not the food but most of all the chef's show. Ours did the typical onion volcano, onion steam choo-choo train, and the initial fire explosion thingy. Although ours had done the minimum, the table next to us had a better show experience. Overall, the experience here could've been better. The chef you get will dictate your overall experience and the food that they have could be better. I've had other teppan experiences that had both better food and shows.

Yelp
Came with a friend to eat the lobster and steak and may I say it was a show and it was delicious. The fried rice was amazing and the service was fun. The decor was simple but great. Will be back again.

Yelp
BYOB + Teppan my wildest dreams come true. This place, with their twilight deals and the BYOB has me in a choke hold !! Burry me in the white sauce I get the shrimp dinner and usually take half home cause I am a economical queen- but you can get whatever you want I am sure it's delicious . Except for the non- teppan stuff I can't vouch for that.
