Authentic MIDDLE-EASTERN accentuated with a touch of GREEK cuisine at the TERRA MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, TX! Check it out!
You know you are a connoisseur of MIDDLE-EASTERN CUISINE when you can taste and instantly differentiate between Souvlaki, Gyro, Doner Kebap, Kafta Kebab, Shish Tawook and Shawarma, and trace these to the lands they originate from. As well, you need to be able to clearly discern between Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Tahina and Tzatziki, as well as their places of origin.
Having studied and lived in the heartland of the Middle East in ISRAEL (I earned my International MBA there) - the source of two the three great monotheistic religions (Judaism and Christianity) I can say I really know my Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean cuisine well. I can taste meat off a rotisserie (Gyro, Doner, Kafta or Shawarma) and tell whether the recipe is sourced in Lebanon, Greece, Egypt, Israel or Turkey. I can take a bite of a falafel and usually tell whether it is sourced from Egyptian or Lebanese beans/recipes.
However, as a culinary anthropologist, I am passionate re: not only discovering great cuisine, but also deciphering insights into how these culinary delights have bridged cultures and civilizations!
Besides rice/risotto, pasta/noodles, fried potatoes, fried eggplant and tomato puree, one would be hard-pressed to find delicacies that have transcended borders, religions and cultures as much as the LAMB/ BEEF/ CHICKEN/ PORK cooked slowly on a vertical rotisserie (see photo below) and then served up in a hollowed-out flatbread, or alternatively over a bed of rice with salad and dips like HUMMUS, BABA GHANOUSH, TZATZIKI, TAHINI and TIROKAFTERI et al!
I am of course referring to the Quintessential Greek/ Turkish/ Middle-Eastern delicacy called 'GYRO' (pronounced "Eero") in GREECE, 'DONER KEBAP' in TURKEY and the ubiquitous 'SHAWARMA' across the Middle-East comprising ISRAEL, EGYPT, IRAQ, SYRIA, LIBYA and LEBANON!
Just think for a moment how these three cultures comprising orthodox Christians from Greece, the Sunni Arabs from the Middle-East and the Ottoman Turks who fought each other for hundreds of years (conquest, plunder and even genocide!), actually celebrate the very same culinary delight with minor variations....this truly is a bridge across cultures, religions and civilizations and continues to tantalize many of us to this day!
We checked out TERRA MEDITERRANEAN at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, TX, and were impressed by the authentic MIDDLE-EASTERN (Lebanese) with a touch of GREEK, orchestrated by brothers-restauranteurs ADAM and JALAL CHANAA from LEBANON, who opened their very first restaurant in the DFW Metroplex in 1989 and have evolved their offering into two restaurant brands TERRA and ALI BABA both of which offer high quality MIDDLE-EASTERN cuisine in a family friendly ambiance accentuated by compelling customer service.
I ordered the staples FALAFEL with TAHINI with their LENTIL SOUP and CORIANDER POTATOES, SHAWARMA (they call this "GYRO" for their American clientele, but do serve this up with ZIZIKI!), HUMMUS, BABA GHANOUSH and my favorite salad - TABOULEH with the Parsley that lights me up, and enjoyed them for their flavors, freshness and authenticity.
My family had the OVEN ROASTED TROUT and the GRILLED SEA BASS which were fresh but we could have done without the cream sauces that detracts from the healthy eating (note to self for the encore expedition!), especially for seafood aficionados like us. Our friends checked out their LAMB and CHICKEN KABABS and were suitably impressed. Please check out my annotated photos below.
What makes TERRA / ALI BABA fairly novel amongst all the Middle-Eastern restaurants in the DFW Metroplex is the presence of classic GREEK STAPLES like MOUSSAKA, FETA CHEESE with OLIVES, GREEK SALAD, ZIZIKI sauce, FLATBREAD with FETA and LAMB CHOPS on their Menu, which enable you to "bridge cultures and continents" on your plate and also indulge your palate - please check out TERRA with your family and friends and let me know your impressions in the thread below.
