Aether Review - Fishtown - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"The year is 2011, and the Eagles’ season is about to start. They’re coming off three straight playoff seasons, and they’ve recently signed a bunch of superstars - Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to name a few. Their own players are calling themselves the “dream team.” By all accounts, it’s their year to win the Super Bowl. They didn’t. In fact, they didn’t even make the playoffs. They totally and completely sucked. It didn’t make any logical sense, and no one could figure out why it happened. The fans did what they always do - they yelled, pelted Santa Claus with snowballs, and held up signs saying things like “Post Reid’s job on Craigslist.” The disappointment we felt during that season is exactly how we feel now about Aether, a seafood restaurant in Fishtown - it has all the makings of a great restaurant but just isn’t. Considering the people behind Aether have two great restaurants in the suburbs, there’s no reason why this place should be any different. Everything - from the interior design to the company’s experience running successful restaurants - says it should be. When you walk into Aether, you feel good about where the night’s going. The space is aesthetically pleasing, the wine list is well-curated with lots of natural stuff, and the long bar up front is full of people who look like they’re having a decent time. The problem here is what’s coming out of the kitchen. As good as the menu looks - with things like Spanish octopus, crab linguine, and crispy fried whole branzino - every dish is poorly executed or has major flaws. There’s a delicious-sounding hamachi crudo with leche de tigre, quinoa, avocado, and chili oil that tastes like absolutely nothing. The undercooked scallops sit in a green curry sauce that doesn’t complement them at all. And then there’s the shrimp toast, which comes piled high with so many different things that it weighs down the entire dish, turning it into a soggy mess. All of these dishes have a bunch of great ingredients that just don’t work together. It’s especially unfortunate because Fishtown needs a good seafood restaurant, and this should have been it. However, no matter how many times we go, and how many different things we try, none of the dishes work. It’s a team that looks good, and should be able to execute, but can’t seem to get any of the pieces to work together. If you do end up here for a first date or to catch up with a friend, sit at the bar and split a bottle of wine and a seafood tower - because everything the kitchen doesn’t overthink is great. The raw bar has a big selection of East and West Coast oysters, the wine list has a great bottle of skin-contact wine we’d buy by the case if we could, and all of the cocktails are solid. But besides drinks and a few oysters, Aether is pretty much useless. Just like the 2011 Eagles (and, really, most Eagles seasons), it will go down on a long list of Philly things that should be great, but just aren’t." - Sydney McElwee

Came here on a Saturday afternoon with a group of friends. We ordered 4 espresso martinis - the bartender said they do not have those on the menu but he could make something similar for us. He made the four “martinis” (didn’t even taste like real espresso) and served them in plastic cups. When we got the bill it was $100. My friends and I were shocked.. every drink on the menu is $12 or below. Charging $25 each seems extremely manipulative - I would highly recommend going elsewhere.

The bouncers/security here are a big problem. They seem to only care about people paying for bottle service and make their own assumptions about people without getting the full story. Just rudeness across the board. I love Philadeep, but not at this venue. Never again. The vibes were WAY OFF.

I'm not a fan of the alcoholic energy that accumulates the later I stay at a day party event here but I always enjoy it while the sun is still out. It's a great space for events, the food is good, and the staff is very friendly. Some of the best events I've been to here were done by Philadeep. They always have some fun events in the area and sometimes in Fairmount Park as well. Their last day party event of 2022 will be this Saturday 10/8!

My friend and I tried to go to Terra last night, and we were physically assaulted by the two bouncers at the door. I ended up being choked and thrown on the ground multiple times, and my friend was punched in the face. One of these bouncers was a man, and we are two young women and have never gotten into a physical altercation like this before. We filed a police report and are pressing charges. This all happened over a misunderstanding while we were entering the establishment. Do not come here. This is not a safe place to dance.

Never returning here again. Me and my friends were celebrating for my friends birthday and we went to use the bathroom next door at Fabrika and they said we heard them when we didn’t and they wouldn’t let us back into terra even though we brought bottles! The so called manager and bouncers were so rude. The birthday girl left gifts there since we all got kicked out and they said they had them but then when she showed up the security remembered her and didn’t let her through! I felt as though establishment was being racist and if we weren’t black they would have let anyone else through. Never returning here

The aesthetic is fresh and cool. The food is authentically delicious and the drinks were great as well. Beth was a pleasure. It was also great to meet Gavin. He was courteous and welcoming. I look forward coming through again.

Came here to check out the vibe, didn't realize they were associated with Fabrika. The flamboyant dude at the front door quickly checked my ID and literally went straight for the $20 I was holding over my cell for cover. I was like uhm okay homie. lol. Music was good, but I really wish I would of cashed out on the first drink versus opening a tab. Totaled: $62 (for 3 mixed drink of makers mark/redbull, and they tacked on 20%). lol outrageous. Ya'll in Fishtown not Miami guys- please chill out. Not worth the money! Yeah, I won't be coming back.

Avoid! The quality of the food is well below the amount they are charging. Nothing seemed like it was prepared that day, let alone the day before. The ceviche was the worst. The color of the shrimp = cooked in lime in the walk-in ... that is how long ago they made it... $90 later and hangry
