If you're driving to Beppu, Terrace Midoubaru is a tranquil place to retreat to with a lovely view of Beppu Bay & the city. Without a car, it might be hard to get to.
The rooms are well designed and spacious. I wish we had more time to enjoy coffee/tea on the balcony to soak in the view. The private onsen is definitely a key feature of the room, but the only downside to it is that it felt weird/awkward at night when the lights are on and there isn't a privacy screen option. Despite being away from the city, there are still some homes in visible distance. And, with the window opened, you can hear traffic as well from the highway.
The shared onsen is small, but is against a floor-to-ceiling window that opens up to allow fresh air in. Breakfast/Dinner were exquisite, featuring local ingredients where possible. There was an abundance of food but without too much excess (only posting a few photos), each dish intentionally prepared and tasty. You can order drinks at dinner; We ordered local sake tasting.
We really enjoyed the service as well. Staff spoke English well, which is a bonus. Wakana served us at dinner and we had a lovely chat about Beppu and what there is to offer. (@Wakana - Thank you for the conversation & recommendations in Beppu! We enjoyed the shiitake mushroom ice cream very much)!
