"This is ryokan country, but unmistakably modern architecture and a stunning selection of contemporary art mark Terrace Midobaru as something out of the ordinary. All the same, the classical virtues of Japanese hospitality are very much in evidence here, from the soothing calm of the clean-lined architecture and design to the spring-fed baths and the devotion shown by the restaurant’s team — even though the cuisine, with its Italian influences, is unusual. The hillside position affords an impressive view of the city of Beppu and the bay beyond, and the city’s “eight hells,” its colorfully named geothermic hot springs, are a major attraction." - Tablet Hotels
Very nice modern style ryokan nestled in the hills of Beppu. Rooms are very nice and big, with our private onsen bathroom. We opted for the dinner and breakfast, and they were both pretty good and tasty.

The hotel room had a stunning view. The dinner and breakfast were nicely served and the food were delightly crafted. We had a warm welcome and especially thanked the staff Ho who gave us great advices for our travel plan. The stay was unforgettable and we were so lucky to oversee the snow scenery in Beppu while enjoying our semi open-air private onsen. I would love to visit it again.

Great Value, nice view and room, locating in the upper level of Beppu where you could enjoy the wonderful full city view, and definitely the seaside.
Room is clean and big, nice balcony for having coffee.
The only weak spot is the distance from JR station.

I booked a two-night stay, expecting a relaxing and quiet experience. Unfortunately, there was construction noise throughout the entire day, and the room was not soundproof, I could hear water running constantly.
The hotel did not inform me about the ongoing construction, and the machines were not functioning properly.
Overall, it was not a great experience.

Beautiful old ryokan, with breathtaking views. The service was so great, we felt like royalty the way we were received. As Dutch tourists the raw squid at dinner and other raw fish at breakfast was a little bit much outside our comfort zone, but that's all part of the fun. Just be aware if you're not so adventurous. Also the public bath was kinda small, but you can use the nice bath in your room with your loved one or as we also did: visit the bath inside Beppu for an hour. The views from the room are great, some things look a little dated, but we didn't mind. Would recommend a visit.

The view was breathtaking, the food was amazing and the staff was very friendly.
I would say that the in-room bath could benefit from small restoration, but overall the experience of private open air bath with view was very unique and I would book here again anyway.
The localization was good, but if you're coming by foot, prepare for a short but steep hike.

Staff were very nice and welcoming.
Welcome drinks and light dessert were served upon arrival. The interior designs and the room we stayed were very spacious, tidy and neat. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and of great variety.
This hotel certainly succeeded in providing a relaxing and serene environment to people who wanted an escape from the daily busy living!
