We ordered the breakfast board, shrimp and grits, Farro bowl and harvest bowl. All were well made and looked very colourful and appetizing. The service was impeccable with servers coming often to ask for water and coffee refills. We felt the shrimps and grits were cold and the server promptly sent it back and was replaced by the new warm dish. Highly recommend the place with befitting seasonal decor. A must visit if you are in Bethesda.

Food is definitely good and the host was pleasant. The African American waitress was also very pleasant. I sat at the bar & went with the American breakfast packed with breakfast meat. The service was average. It must have been the manager sitting in because he was offering the best service a tired manager could; not quite as good as a bartender offers. I was not offered condiments like ketchup or hot sauce & when I asked for water he poured it from the soapy sink and it tasted bad…I even had to reach across the bar to grab the pepper. Folks, food taste as good as the service! He did ask how the food was eventually and I asked for ketchup. The sweet sister bought it for me. Overall, it’s a good breakfast place but I won’t rush back. Some places are one & done…I do realize how hard it is to get hood help and it’s hurting the DMV restaurant business. Beautiful ambiance & worth the try.

No wonder it is hard to get a table for Sunday brunch without a reservation. I particularly like the environment and friendly service. The staff makes you feel very comfortable. The food has quite innovative choose of ingredients. The Eggs Benedict has cauliflower and hot pepper, the spicy makes it quite interesting. None of the foods were salty, which I like very much.

I gave the food a 3, service a 5, and atmosphere a 5, hence my 4 star rating. We sat outdoors and loved the atmosphere (minus the bees). Our waiters were kind and patient and provided us with good service. We got mocktails to drink. The blackberry bramble and watermelon mint refresher were delicious (I highly recommend them). We also got a charcuterie board and I wasn’t familiar with most of the cheese options. I’ve had better charcuterie boards but isn’t want bad. The honey that came with it was so good as well (I know that is such a random thought). My friend got a Caesar salad and she said it might have been one of the best Caesar’s she’s had. I didn’t try it and I’m not a Caesar salad fan, so I cannot vouch for it but I trust her taste. I got the grilled cheese. I know it may seem odd I ordered grilled cheese at a restaurant but I just wanted something light but not a sandwich. I wish the bread was crispier and butter up. The cheese were okay. Overall, I was kind of disappointed with the grilled cheese because they’re super easy to make. In general, I wasn’t wowed by the food but it’s a cute place for lunch or brunch.

My friend and I enjoyed brunch at this very attractive cafe. My elderflower-flavored lemonade tasted more of lemon and sugar, but although sweeter than I would have wished, was eminently drinkable. We liked the pot of fresh-baked bread with its accompanying herb butter. We each had the wild mushroom frittata, a 6-inch diameter individual pie served on a lovely wooden cutting board, with some hash browns and a small salad drowning in dressing. I would have liked more mushrooms and more savory spices, but the frittata was the perfect size for a meal. For dessert we split the humongous cinnamon bun, which was as sticky and sweet as could be. My friend found her Bee Sting Latte to be overly spiced and large, but happily managed to finish it off.

Terrain Cafe, tucked inside Bethesda's Anthropologie, is a must-visit for delicious vegetarian dishes like quinoa fritters and farro bowls. I enjoyed the fresh, locally sourced ingredients, friendly service, and a serene atmosphere. Great outdoor brunch spot on a lovely spring day.

It was very nice and cozy place to go to and hang out with friends. Staff are really friendly and nice. Food was amazing and delicious and well presented. We were party of 6 having different orders and we all loved it. We will definitely go back there for brunch and want to go back there to try their lunch menu as well.

All the staff was very polite though the did bring the wrong food to our table. the restaurant was clean with modern adornments. The terracotta baked bread is very good and clearly the speciality. I would avoid the deep fried avocado. it's a fairly center of the pack brunch place, aside from the potted bread.

Yelp
While shopping at the Anthropologie next door we noticed that the Terrain location next door had been transformed into a small cafe. While we weren't able to eat there at the time since we did not have a reservation we vowed that we would come back and give it a try. Located in the middle of a busy Bethesda it is surrounded by other high end shops and restaurants, your best bet for parking is to park in one of the public parking garages. Inside the decor is amazing! Since they are connected to a high end decor and fashion store there should be no surprise that this is the case but you get this feeling of ease when walking in. Service was amazing we came in on a later Sunday morning and the place was quiet and we were promptly seated. My wife noticed that our table was a bit messy so the waiter quickly put us in a different table and tended to the mess. The menu while being a little simple has some big hitters on it with seasonal options and local favorites. We asked our waiter a few questions and ended up picking his 2 favorite items: the braised short rib and egg, and the turkey sandwich. We also ordered a couple of seasonal beverages that were really delicious. Once the food arrived is was plated very well and we quickly dug in. While the food was very good I agree with the other reviews that it was just a bit on the bland side. Never the less still very good and we happily ate them both up! If I'm being honest I wish I could give it more than 4 stars, but with the food not being spectacular I struggle with giving it 5.

Yelp
We came to Terrain for a goodbye brunch for a friend. We came in without reservations and sat at the bar as a group of 6. The indoor decor and overall vibe was great! They had beautiful decorations and great lighting. The restaurant itself is connected to the Anthropologie store. Our service was pretty good-- we were at the bar and the bartender was taking orders as well as keeping up with all the drink orders from the rest of the restaurant. I got an iced latte and the fried cauliflower sandwich. The latte was very milky-- I would've preferred less, but I would probably get a different drink if I went back. The sandwich had a creamy garlicky sauce layered between the bread and the cauliflower, as well as some arugula greens. The actual cauliflower piece was pretty small and didn't have much flavor, and it was overwhelmed by the thick pieces of plain toasted bread on either side. For what it was, this sandwich was also pretty expensive at $16.

Yelp
Super cute spot that left something to be desired. The cheese plate was definitely lacking when it came to quantity. The options were great but portions were SO small and disappointing. The bowls were huge but could use more sauce. I will say the falafel was TOP NOTCH!! IF I came back I would strictly get the falafel. Drinks were good. Service was a little slow. Loved that it was connected to a little plant store and anthro. Parking was cheap for 2hr. Would I go again? Maybe for brunch.

Yelp
I've visited Anthropologie next door several times but didn't know this Terrain cafe was operated by the same brand/company until recently. So I made a reservation for Sunday brunch, which was pretty busy and packed with patrons. The vibe and decor of this place were so cute and lovely. Avocado toast is my go-to for brunch, but I was told that it was out of stock when ordering it. I also saw the customer across our table encountering the same issue. In particular, avocado toast is quite a popular item nowadays and is listed at the top of the menu, so the server should have mentioned it before we started browsing the menu. Our meals looked good, but qualities were overall inconsistent. I ended up getting a wild mushroom frittata, but the side salad lacked the dressing, so I only tasted greens. Similarly, I felt like the chef forgot to put seasonings in my frittata. Besides, this bland frittata was overcooked, so the edge was too crispy and rubbery. On the other hand, potato hash was well-seasoned and flavorful. My partner mostly enjoyed "terrain Breakfast," but his eggs were also overcooked. Our hot drinks (latte and honey tea au lait) were solid and well-balanced. I thought of getting a dessert, but after eating the meal, I decided to pass. The staff was friendly, and the service was quite quick. I just hoped for a better quality of meals for this price.

Yelp
I've been here twice for brunch on a Friday morning. The ambiance both inside and on the patio is spot on. I love the chandelier decorations in the dining room and the chill vibe. They always start the meal by bringing bread and butter. Don't skip - the bread is fresh baked in cute flower pot decor and the butter is always a freshly made seasonal flavored butter - last time we had strawberry butter, yum! Both times I've been here the consensus on food is that it's good but a little bland. Everyone at the table added salt and pepper to their dishes. That being said, portion size is good and nothing is overly heavy which is great for a brunch before shopping type of day. While the food is good, the star is the drinks! I've tried a few of their seasonal lattes and my sister got the sparkling blackberry mocktail beverage that was the perfect amount of sweet and bubbly.

Yelp
Really liked the ambiance-- owned by the same company that owns a Anthropologie next door---so that kind of relaxed vibe. The woman's bathroom had a really awesome sculpture on the wall. Was looking for mid afternoon coffee and sweets. Just ordered two Americanos. It took about 15 minutes to bring out---the restaurant was more than half a day during late afternoon. The coffee was very good. Then it must've taken another 10 minutes for the raspberry cheesecake. The server was nice but I'm not sure what was happening in this restaurant. The raspberry cheesecake was more raspberry jam flavor that overpowered the cheesecake.

Yelp
Adorable place but food leaves a little to be desired. Mushroom soup was downright disgusting- more like a blended mushroom dip than a soup. I ordered the farro bowl, which was supposed to come with halloumi, but my bowl only came with one tiny piece (why even put it on the menu then?) Drinks were good but all of them were a little on the sweet side. Staff was attentive.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of terrain cafes brunch! I've been here for dinner and not the biggest fan of the menu options so this review is solely for their brunch. When you first get seated and order, you're given the cutest bread in a flowerpot. The bread is always fresh and warm. As for the food itself, I always order some variation of the avocado toast. I believe they've changed the dressing on the toast since I was first here and now it tastes more sweet than savory which was not as good imo. The breakfast platter is very nice as well. The service is always amazing and the staff are kind. The ambiance is a major draw for me and the reason I stumbled upon this spot in the first place.

Yelp
Nice place to sit outside in good weather for breakfast/brunch. My friend and I shared the zucchini parm sandwich and the fried avocado benedict. I don't think I'd order either again. They zucchini parm sandwich was enormous but the zucchini was very under-seasoned. The benedict was fine but the fried avocado had a weird texture and the roasted cauliflower was in a weird stick/fry shape and undercooked (and also under-seasoned). The servers were kind of MIA, not really around when we needed them, and were a bit frazzled by our cocktail orders and they took a while to come out. The food was slow which is fine for a leisurely brunch but it was to the point where we weren't sure if they forgot about us. Overall the menu has promise but execution isn't great. Maybe they should stick to plants.

Yelp
Such a cute spot! Food was delish, and service was great! Atmosphere is great, and created a cute environment.

Yelp
An unexpected surprise. With so many dining choices in Bethesda, I was never interested in trying an eatery that was part of a rectal store. But, in the case of terrain, I could not have been more wrong. The place is a delight. The menu has a lot of interesting items, but if you want a burger or Turkey sandwich, it is on there and very good. Their fries are excellent and they have a fantastic, albeit spicy, avocado toast. They have soups, salads, bowls and brunch items that all look tasty. Whoever supplies their bread is excellent. Staff is friendly. They have a large selection of refreshing drinks which should place terrain atop your list of summer eateries to try.

Yelp
Husband and I have been to Terrain several times - and every time has been fantastic! Their dishes are often vegetarian friendly, but don't let the idea of a veggie meal fool you - every dish is packed with flavor! For those who have never been (and, perhaps those that have), their hours are for breakfast and lunch only. I mention this, because the last time We ate there we arrived about 30mins before closing. After they closed, people kept trying to come in, despite being told they were closed. Normally, this wouldn't be cause for concern, but I get the feeling they have to deal with a lot of entitled customers as each time they were told the place was closed, the hopeful diners would scoff and try to negotiate the ability to come in and dine. I guess that speaks to the greatness of the food and drink, but it also made me pretty sad to think about how often this kind of behavior might happen there. So if you happen to go to Terrain, and the service isn't as fantastic as I've spoken about here, it might be because they've had to deal with some not so great customers.

Yelp
Met a friend here for lunch. When I arrived I asked the hostess if there was seating available for two. She asked if I had a reservation and proceeded to tell me that they were full. I asked if I could put my name down, she took my name and said it would be a 40 min wait. When my friend arrived, less than 10 mins later, she was immediately told there was a table available. Needless to say I won't be returning.

Yelp
The environmental this restaurant is very welcoming and and the people are very friendly. It's beautifully decorated. I went with couple of my friends for brunch and we really enjoyed ourselves. We the food was delicious and the service was amazing. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Overpriced with basic food and basic service. I ordered the avocado toast and it was probably the worst I have had in a restaurant. It had zero flavor and it seemed that they forgot to put salt and pepper as well. The bread they used was not good either. Furthermore they never offered to refill the water and we had to ask the waiters three times for water. It was also very expensive. The inside is very pretty and the plates come out looking nice however.

Yelp
I had lunch at Terrain yesterday and it was so-so. I was seated outside and, although I appreciate them having outdoor seating, the table we got was at a pretty severe angle so I was on a bit of a hill the whole time. The waitstaff was very sluggish, it took a long time to get our order taken. I got the harvest bowl which was decent, but the falafel was pretty spicy. The vegetables in it were good, though I wish there was more tahini dressing overall. I also got a hot tea but nobody ever came to refill it with more hot water. Overall my experience was fine but I would choose other lunch places around Bethesda row before coming back.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Terrain Cafe has an excellent staff, atmosphere, and theme to their food! We loved the presentation of bread in a plant pot, and our cheese board was equally tasty and aesthetically pleasing. I tried the Iced lavender white mocha coffee and am not exaggerating when I say that it is one of the best coffee's I've had. For lunch I had the fried cauliflower sandwich, which was cooked expertly and tasted delicious! The only thing I will say is that the falafel in the Harvest bowl was just a liiiittle too spicy for our liking. Overall, I had a great experience and would love to return here in the future
google avatar

Yelp
This is a small cafe attached to the Anthropologie store, but I would advise not to judge a book by its cover! Had brunch here, and enjoyed a very good bloody Mary and a beautifully decorated cheese board. The frittata with goat cheese created a perfect bite, but the Benedict could have had a little more salt (but that's all in the eye of the beholder). I think this would be a perfect first date spot, as it's very quaint and intimate.

Allison C.

Yelp
I was visiting family and we decided to try out this little cafe at the corner with outdoor patio seating. You can scan the menu and order on your phone. Pretty seemless to do, though customizing was a little hard. For me, I opted in for the little sprouts menu since I could sample 2 items and not have the huge serving. I ordered the sprouts salmon and harvest bowl. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the size of both and I enjoyed the flavors of both very much. The salmon was well cooked and the veggies & mushrooms were great. The harvest bowl I needed to ask for a little dressing but it was also fresh. Both of my sisters got the fried avocado with the cauliflower mash which looked great and I enjoyed my taste. Everything looked good. They did come out and check on us a couple of times and you can easily pay your check out on the phone as well. Great find if you are in the area! SYOY!

Yelp
Excellent food and relaxed atmosphere. A great place to pull up a chair and have great conversations with friends and strangers alike.

Yelp
Although I haven't had the opportunity to try the cafe itself (as they're temporarily closed at the moment until next year), there is a popup Christmas store in its place. The moment you walk in, you can literally smell and feel the holidays. There's plentiful reefs, lights and trees available for purchase and next door is Terrain's plant shop. I didn't buy anything at the time, but I'm definitely planning to go back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Food was hot an super large for the price. Everything was delicious. The cafe itself is super cute and nice. They are also part of anthropologie which is nice. Will be back again for sure

Yelp
Excellent Sunday lunch dining with very attentive service. My omelet was expertly prepared. Nothing special but just delish. My hubby wasn't too crazy about the mushroom frittata but our cousin loved his turkey sandwich. It was huge. It was pretty crowded so make a res. Highly recommended.

Yelp
We were attracted to this place based on their interesting menu. It looked creative and healthy. While it appeared to be mostly vegetarian, many dishes allowed for customization by adding a variety of proteins. We sat outside and the hostess pointed out the QR code ordering option where you can order from your phone. We used this as we thought it would be the easiest way to split the check. Unfortunately, the app only worked for one out of three of us. To her credit, the hostess did say we could have normal waiter service, but it was too late for us. As for the food, it was quite a disappointment. The Prosciutto and Chicory Caesar Salad had a few tiny pieces of prosciutto, a small amount of cheese, and hardly any dressing. The croutons were tasteless cubes of toasted, stale bread. The $7 worth of added shrimp amounted to 3 small shrimp that couldn't have weighed more than an ounce, maybe 2. The apples on the Grilled Apple Salad were mush and that salad also lacked flavor. The service was mixed. Our server was pleasant and professional, but didn't check in to see if we needed anything. The busboy was another story. He stood at the table, held out his hand for you to hand him plates, and said, "Sorry." At least he was polite. I don't think we'll be going back.

Yelp
Terrain is such a beautiful restaurant. The ambiance is just so welcoming. It gives me garden, homey & barn vibes! I ordered the terrain burger - angus beef, local cheddar, balsamic onion jam, house-cut fries $18 The burger was juicy & really delicious. It was not greasy at all. The fries too were made to perfection. I didn't take a picture of their complementary bread but it was so delicious & warm - the butter was amazing It came in a cute garden pot. I highly recommend this place!

Camille L.

Yelp
Absolutely love this restaurant, I've been to the Westport, CT location as well. The food and drinks are refreshing and I love the bread pot! Definitely recommend!

Joel C.

Yelp
Food was slow in coming and extremely sub par when it did.... Salmon was seriously undercooked (not a question of preference, this was clearly shiny-raw and inedible) and eggs were rubber. And then it cost a fortune!
google avatar

Rose R.

Yelp
I'm so glad they opened back up! Located within the Anthropology store in downtown Bethesda, this cafe offers a small menu of fresh and great tasting food. The indoor space is small and whimsical but I like sitting outside if the weather is nice under the shaded trees. I stopped by for lunch and the service was great. The "potted" bread is just ok - cute but lacking some flavor. The mushroom frittata with potatoes and greens was delicious. It takes quite a while for the food to come out. The iced tea of the day was vanilla hazelnut which was earthy. The price point is on the high end but the quality of food and presentation is great. I worry a little how long the food would take it if were busy but I look forward to returning.

Yelp
I"ve been wanting to stop by because of the ambiance! And loved the feel of tall ceilings and woody grass feel! I was right the first day after having mushroom soup! And winter Citrus cocktail. That next family lunch date invited everyone and loved the butternut squash salad.

Nancy A.

Yelp
Terrain Cafe for dinner? Crispy chicken not crispy but overdone and tasteless, served with fried potatoes (warm, not hot). The Chardonnay was not chilled either - not warm but not properly chilled. Maybe desserts are good? Spouse's grain bowl was better. Meh... not coming here again.

Cammy V.

Yelp
Comically bad dining experience. I came here for brunch on Saturday 3/11. Friends and I were starving after a night out, and the coffee and cocktails made us more nauseous. There were about 10 servers working (standing around) and only 3 tables full. It was confusing as to why it took 30 minutes for 2 coffees and 2 cocktails to be brought to our table. Our server was sweet, but she would drop food/drinks off and then immediately run away from our table before we could request for more water/bread/ask a question. Fries were cold, food was nauseating and all came out at different times, espresso was watery and burnt, and the bloody mary didn't even taste like booze. There was no music or heat, so the dining experience was very much like eating cold leftovers in the back of an Anthropologie. As a server myself, I know Saturday brunch is the worst, but for the price, Terrain really needs to get it together.

V D.

Yelp
Bartender took water glass from previous customer, rinsed out the glass and poured me water. He didn't wash it at all. And I watched while sitting at the bar. Needless to say I left. The only reason I didn't give it a one star is because I talked to the manager about it and he said he would address it.
google avatar

Rita S.

Yelp
Go here for the aesthetics. Chic, Anthropologie-inspired interior (in house cafe for the store which is a unique concept). Lots of greenery and natural materials and textures. Their bread comes in cute, clay pots. I had the brunch frittata w/ wild mushrooms which was pretty but the eggs were a bit over cooked.

Yelp
Delicious fresh farm to table healthy dishes that are bursting with flavor and impeccable service to top it off! The complementary muffin-shaped bread served in a garden pot with lavender butter was a fun way to start off our meal! The crispy English Pea & Goat Cheese Croquettes was hand-down my favorite dish! The 2 paddies filled with peas, charred carrots and other veggies were large enough to share and quite filling! The Avocado Toast was tasty with a spicy red pepper spread, avocado, arugula, and sweet drop peppers on grilled bread. The semolina bread was quite dense and didn't have the light and fluffy texture that I was hoping for. While the Avocado toast was filling, a side salad would be a nice touch and the $15 price tag was a bit steep. My hubby enjoyed the Salmon Toast. The garden cocktails spice things up with some herbs and veggies peppered in. My hubby wasn't a big fan of the Dixon Mule with a bold turmeric flavor. The Orange Grove with orange marmalade demerara was more his jam! The seasonal Peach Sage Mimosa was divine as well as the refreshing homemade Elderflower Spritz. The friendly, attentive, and coordinated service was impressive. There were at least 3 or 4 staff members that check-in on us from the server, host, bartender, and the manager. Every encounter was warm and pleasant. The outdoor patio seating is nice with a 1/2 dozen tables. Surprisingly a great off-shoot of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. Fun healthy addition to Bethesda Row!

Yelp
As others have said as well, I think this place deserves a 3.5 star. We went on a Friday evening and it was not overly crowded. It took a few minutes for our waiter to come over. At one point, one of the managers had to check on us since the waiter had been gone for a good while. For drinks, we tried the Elderberry and Blueberry mix house soda. I give a thumbs up for this one. We enjoyed the complimentary fresh baked bread with honey butter, tasty. We tried the chicken breast and salmon entrees. Although they were okay, they were lacking flavor and some of the ingredient combinations were not the greatest. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back. The prices of the drinks and entrees do not justify the pricing or quality of service.

Yelp
After shopping one of the biggest Anthropologies in the nation, you're probably gonna be parched. Well, I've got a remedy for you! Terrain Cafe turns everything that you love about Anthropologie into a neatly packaged sit down restaurant. I stopped in between a weird afternoon hour where the kitchen was closed but the bar was open and I was able to enjoy a delicious (albeit super sweet) vanilla chai latte. For dessert we had a chocolate terrarium which soft milk chocolate ganache, dark chocolate mousse, white chocolate-matcha crunch, dark chocolate cake, and dulce de leche. It was perfectly Instagrammable and a really wonderful way to celebrate purchasing a bridal gown at the BHLDN next door. For a special treat I definitely recommend stopping by! I'd love to check out their brunch menu as well.

Yelp
I stopped in here for lunch on a Friday afternoon around 1:30 and was seated right away. The interior is beautiful with plants on the walls and you feel as if you're in a garden. I started with a glass of rosé because it was my birthday! The server also brought over an interesting piece of fluffy bread shaped like a big muffin that was served in a pot, it was tempting, but I held off on diving in because I chose the harvest bowl and had a feeling it would be pretty satisfying and that it was! The bowl had quinoa, roasted bok choy, eggplant, chickpeas, kale with a tahini sauce drizzled on top - I also asked for a side of hot sauce bc I always need that - the bowl was soooo good! They change up the veggies depending on the season and can't wait to see what they serve in the spring!

Yelp
My favorite cafe in Bethesda. The ingredients are healthy, the dishes are nourishing, and the price point is reasonable. I love the interior but we usually sit outside the patio. Service is always so friendly. Recommend all the bowls!!

Yelp
Maybe this makes me a bit basic... no... no... there are so many other reason's why I'm basic. Scratch that. [this is not a moment, it's the movement] Maybe this makes me a lot MORE basic... but I kinda love Terrain Cafe. Yes, yes, this is the cafe that is part of the new Anthropologie in Bethesda. And much like the highly manicured experience that you'll have once you step into the retail portion; the cafe has gotten the basics set with some pretty sweet treasures if you dig into the glitter. Now, don't get it confused with "Terrain" on the other side of the corner of Anthropologie (I know... how could you possibly do that?!)... though without the tables and chairs this could pass for a plant store, this cafe is serving up a pretty full menu that includes everything from a variety of toasts to duck breast with melted leeks, fingerling potato, sage and pumpkin seed pesto. I started out with the mushroom soup and we got an order of fries with truffled pecorino and crispy chickpeas. But before any of this came to the table, and adorable clay planter pot showed up with a loaf of bread that was it was clearly baked in. Definitely an adorable presentation and both the potted bread and herb butter were well executed to boot. Mushroom soup was quite delicious, I remember scraping small streaks from the empty bowl at the finish with a desire for a miniature spatula to execute the job more precisely. We also got to try to of their toasts: 1. Smoked Salmon $15.00 crème fraîche, crispy capers, fresh dill, beet relish 2. Lioni Burrata $18.00 black garlic, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt Yes... first you're going to have to swallow the prices before you move onto the food. We understand that you're on Bethesda Row Anthropologie, but as my friendly neighborhood Spiderman Noir would say: "Wowzas!" Yes... I did just go see Spiderman into the Multiverse. Both of the toasts were very good, I admit. And if anything, the pictures they produced you could probably make prints of to sell on Etsy to justify to yourself spending 15-18 on a toast. Outside of the beauty and taste of the toasts, well executed mushroom soup, and crispy chickpeas (that really feel like they need some sort of dipping sauce, but I completely understand why they don't have a dipping sauce, cause then you try to stab them with your fork and get frustrated and end up with chickpea shrapnel everywhere, and also the chickpeas are a bit greasy so I'm not sure what sort of sauce would work well with them cause a lot of sauces have fat in them, and they're good don't get me wrong, but they feel a bit disjointed and like it's almost weird eating them as a side, like a rambling run-on sentence about chickpeas... maybe a dipping sauce with a pair of chopsticks?); outside of that the fries were pretty basic. The truffled pecorino didn't really come through at all for us. I think there was too little of it that was just grated too thin on top and you really lost it. I'd definitely be back to Terrain Cafe. It just screams Bethesda, and if you happen to be in Bethesda doing Bethesda, why not just let go and do Bethesda.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with a friend this evening (a Thursday). I think overall my experience was a 3.5, but I had a lovely dinner and would be happy to come back, so I went with 4 stars rather than 3. This was my 1st time here, but my friend had previously come for breakfast and recommended it. I'd made a reservation for 6 pm about a week in advance. The restaurant called me around 3:30 pm the day of to confirm my reservation. It wasn't too busy when we arrived; they were at about half capacity. We were seated immediately at the 2nd 2-person table from the front door. Usually I prefer to be seated a bit farther in, but there wasn't any draught from the entrance and we had a nice view of the front of the restaurant, so I wound up being satisfied with our table. Most of the tables looked to be 2-seaters, although there was at least 1 larger table in the back of the restaurant, near the toilets. Our server was a nice lady who patiently answered my friend's questions about the menu (which included "how big is the salmon toast," "what are the autumn vegetables in the harvest bowl," and "what is kale falafel"). We took rather a long time to order but she checked in on us a few times as we were deciding on what to get and offered drinks (though we stuck with water). We noticed that the diners at the table right next to us were having some trouble deciding on drinks and our server brought 1 of them a small sample of 1 of the drinks before they ordered a full-size one, which was kind. We ordered the ricotta & squash fritters as a starter. For mains, my friend ordered the harvest bowl (the salmon toast sounded like too small a portion for dinner, and the vegetables and the kale falafel in the harvest bowl sounded like they would be good). I ordered the duck breast, which was probably 1 of the more expensive things on the menu at $32. We were then served the complimentary bread, which was served with honey whipped butter. The butter was pretty heavenly, but the bread was sort of average. It was nice that it was served warm and the pot was a cute idea that went with the theme of the restaurant, but overall I wasn't a fan of the texture or taste of the bread. That did not keep me from finishing my half of the loaf, however. The ricotta & squash fritters were served with the maple glaze poured right on; I'm not sure if we could've gotten the sauce on the side if we'd asked. I loved the fritters; they were probably the highlight of the meal for me. They were served piping hot and reminded me of beignets (only a bit softer and denser), and I really enjoyed the sauce. However, my friend wasn't a big fan and only ate 1 of the 6 (I wasn't complaining since that meant I got the other 5). Our mains came out pretty quickly and the portions were larger than I'm used to seeing at fancy/photogenic restaurants, which was a nice surprise. The harvest bowl especially was pretty massive; my friend wound up taking a good 3rd of it home with her as leftovers. The duck breast was a generous portion and served with a nice pesto and some potato fingerlings. However, if I come back I probably wouldn't get it again, as it was quite expensive and as recently as last week I'd had better, more flavorful duck at a friend's home. I usually like pesto, but am more partial to traditional basil pesto, which I don't think this one was, so it didn't really stand out to me. The harvest bowl, which I understood from our server was the most popular dish at the restaurant, was loaded with quinoa and vegetables, including brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and squash. It also came with falafel and tahini sauce. My friend gave me 2 of her falafels to try as well as the squash, and they were really delicious and flavorful. I would probably get this if I ever come back for dinner, although my friend thought the falafel was a bit too spicy for her. She really loved the squash, which I agreed was really great. Our server said most people got the harvest bowl with chicken or salmon (additional cost), but we thought the bowl was filling enough with just the falafel. Our bill came out to be over $63 before tip but after tax; this included 2 mains and the fritters appetizer (we did not get drinks or dessert). This was pretty steep, but the portions were generous and the ingredients seemed to be high-quality. Our server was very kind and friendly, although sometimes a bit slow to refill our waters; we had to flag people down for the water pitcher twice during the meal. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, but the tables were very close together, so keep that in mind as it can be awkward getting in and out between tables. There were 2 unisex restrooms; I went twice during the meal and never had to wait in a queue. The restrooms were reasonably clean and well supplied, and had hand lotion in addition to soap, a nice touch. There were some reasonably-priced parking garages a short walk away. The metro station is w/in walking distance too.

Yelp
Service is nice but on the slower end. But I have not had a dish that I don't like at this place. And their fries are so yummy.

Yelp
Terrain is stunning! It really makes you feel as if you're dining in a gorgeous terrarium - tons of plants lining the walls and gorgeous air plants + stones on the tables. I didn't realize that Terrain is part of Anthropologie until I walked in - keep walking past the plant section in their store to access the cafe (where Barnes used to be!). It's fairly new, so be prepared to deal with issues in their service as they work out the kinks. We had a long wait before our table was ready (took 30 minutes beyond the reservation time), but we had a gracious host who made sure we were taken care of while we waited. I tried their version of the moscow mule, with elderflower syrup and tumeric. Starting off, you get warm bread in a pot + whipped honey butter!! My favorite dish of the night had to be the Lioni Burrata toast that a gf had gotten - the burrata is so creamy and balanced well with the smokey/sweet black garlic. My Harvest Bowl was delicious as well albeit a bit TOO well seasoned with salt (PS - always say yes to bacon). Am I coming back? Absolutely - I'd love to visit for brunch (they serve Ceremony coffee!)!!!

Yelp
A worthy addition to ritzy downtown Bethesda, Pennsylvania transplant Terrain Cafe delivers on the aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, healthy and delicious (if pricey) fare, and fairly good service. A friend and I met up for a late brunch on a humid Sunday - even at 1pm, the place was packed and we were glad to have made a reservation. I was pleased when our waitress promptly stopped by our table and took our orders - at other Terrain locations, service often is overwhelmed and slow. Complimentary bread, baked in a flowerpot and served with hibiscus butter, arrived shortly afterwards and was as good as ever. I ordered the burger and was very, very happy to find that it was a true medium-rare. So many places I've been to in DC tend to err on the side of over-cooked burger, but Terrain's burger is fresh, well-seasoned, and shaped as a thick patty - one of the best burgers I've had in the area. The accompanying fries were great as well. Since the burger had gone so well, I decided to spring for dessert. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a letdown: the salted honey tart could have been good, but was served straight out of the refrigerator. If the tart had been warmed (even microwaved would have been an improvement) and served with perhaps a dollop of whipped cream or a small scoop of ice cream, it would have been much, much more enjoyable. All in all, Terrain is a great option for meeting friends over well-prepared, fancy but casual brunch fare in an Instagram dream environment. The attached Anthropologie is huge and worth checking out as well!

Yelp
Oh my my my I have only great things to say about this place! Not only is it super cute (refer to the flower pot bread loaf pic!) but also delicious. Both of the salads we ordered plus the salmon were all super fresh. The charcuterie was a charcuterie board of my dreams with all the perfect fixins. Plus the espresso martinis were top tier. I will definitely be returning to Terrain Cafe next time I am in Bethesda!

Yelp
My Mom and I came to Terrain for Mother's Day Brunch last weekend, and while some things were lovely, others definitely need some improvement. The ambiance is incredibly dreamy and perfect for brunch! However, we waited for over 20 minutes before we were even able to put in a drink order. It was clear that our waiter was flustered, but there were many other staff including a manager standing around. We put in our food and drink order at the same time, but we had to pivot our choices as a number of items were unavailable on their already small menu. The food came out before we received our drinks and we had to ask two different people before we got them. I ordered the cauliflower sandwich and it was almost the size of a slider with three small florets on a hamburger bun. The flavors were good but that is not an acceptable size for the price. My Mom got the roasted turkey sandwich which was delicious and HUGE! I would come back in the future, as I'm hoping that some of these issues were just because it was a holiday.

Yelp
Not only is this location extremely aesthetic and located next to an Anthropologie (big win), the food is incredible! This is not a place that's only photogenic- everything is fantastic: the atmosphere, the drinks, the food, the presentation. They do seasonal menus to keep weather appropriate dishes and vegetables, and as I went during the autumn there was lots of root vegetables. They do mostly plant based dishes, but there are also some meat dishes. I got the Garden Spritzer, essentially a flavored club soda (I chose blueberry and elderflower for my flavors), Hummus and Crudite Board (my least favorite thing I ordered I would recommend a different appetizer), Mushroom and Oat Burger (delicious!), and Chocolaye Terrarium (the perfect not too sweet dessert).

Yelp
I found my new favorite spot in Bethesda! Terrain Cafe where have you been all my life? The restaurant is located next to Anthropologie and to be honest, I made a mistake by walking in there instead of going around to the main entrance. The store and Terrain Cafe have a connecting door so make sure to walk around. As soon as I entered, I noticed the beautiful greenery, zen, and calming decor and I was instantly a fan. I was greeted by Khari, the GM of Terrain Cafe upon entering and he was very attentive and funny! I had a pleasure of trying out the four-course prix fixe winter menu for an event and everything I tasted were delicious! For the first course, we had the Mushroom Soup Shooters and Mixed Field Green Salad. The soup was so creamy and delicate on the palate, I wanted a second serving! For the second course, we had the Lioni Burrata (roasted butternut squash, aged balsamic, toasted hazelnuts, and micro arugula). The cheese had a good amount of richness and paired perfectly with the butternut squash. The third course was a Mushroom and Oat slider, refreshing and flavorful. The fourth course was my absolute favorite, Wild Striped Bass with a side of lentils, sunflower romesco, beets, swiss chard, and sunflower seeds. The fish was perfectly cooked with a delectable taste. The sides gave it an earthy taste which was delightful. But wait...there's more! The dessert sampler was the cherry on top of the whole dining experience. The orange cake was moist and the apple tart had a nice freshness to it. It was the perfect balance between sweet and tart. We also had a pleasure of meeting Chef Kevin, the man responsible for the amazing spread. The staff was amazing throughout the evening and everything was magnificent! I will most definitely be back here. I can't wait to try their brunch items and bring anyone and everyone that I know!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to celebrate our three year anniversary at Terrain Cafe located in the heart of Bethesda Row. When we arrived, we checked in with the hostess and she gave us an option between the two seater tables next to each other. We waited about 10 minutes before someone came to take our order. Both of us decided to order from the Bethesda Restaurant Menu. In short, the service was lacking and the food was average. The staff did not do a good job at replacing silverware in between courses. Before we could eat each course, we had to flag down a staff member for a spoon or fork. The pace of the meal was unacceptable. This meal took over two hours to consume with most of the time waiting on the courses. Our server didn't bring us bread and butter nor did she check on us to see if we needed anything like another drink. 15 minutes after we placed our hour, our appetizers came. My boyfriend had the Potato Rosti, which consisted of two rectangular logs of deep fried potato latke served over leek fondue with sauteed beech mushrooms. The potato rosti melted in our mouths and reminded me of hush puppies. I ordered the Mushroom Soup, which consisted of creamy, thick, gingery, and salty puree of button mushrooms finished with an olive oil drizzle. Another 10 minutes passed and our drinks finally arrived. My boyfriend ordered a Denizen Born Bohemian Pils, which was came with a glass. I was surprised they didn't pour it for him. I ordered the Spiked Hibiscus Lemonade, which consisted of a grapefruit rose vodka and hibiscus lemonade. It was pretty to look at but it was watered down and it barely tasted like there was alcohol in it. Another 5 minutes passed and our second course came. Both of us ordered the Mixed Field Greens Salad. I was surprised and somewhat confused when the salad arrived as it wasn't as described. When I questioned it, a gentleman explained that the menu was misprinted, they do not have the ingredients to make what's listed, and he would give us a discount (but that never happened). I wished that the server would have alerted us of the change in the listed menu item. Instead of a mixed green salad topped with maple glazed sweet potato, pomegranate seeds, lavash croutons, and cranberry vinaigrette, we received a mixed greens salad topped with watermelon radish, chopped walnuts, kumquats, and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was flavorless as it was barely dressed. 50 minutes later, our entrees arrived. My boyfriend ordered the Maple Chili Glazed Chicken Breast served with brown butter barley risotto, shredded brussel sprouts, and hazelnut. The dish was nicely plated and the right temperature. The Terrain Burger consisted of a toasted poppy seed and sesame brioche bun, a swee5 balsamic onion jam, tasty and juicy beef patty, and cheddar served with soggy hand cut fries. I ordered it medium to medium rare but it was closer to well done. While we were chowing down our main course, they brought us the Chocolate Terranium, which consisted of soft milk chocolate ganache and dark chocolate mousse, topped with dark chocolate cake bites and white chocolate matcha crunch. I didn't taste the dulce de leche. The presentation wasn't appealing - it looked like weed. I think the dessert would have tasted better with the super dry, possibly stale matcha crunch.
