Best Muffulettas in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Love this family owned grocery store on Esplanade Avenue, the kind of place where the Italian sausage is homemade - the hot is amazing - and the hogshead cheese has its own fan club. On Saturdays - and Saturdays only - buy a half or whole muffuletta at Terranova’s, wrapped in plastic and sitting up by Karen at the register. When they’re gone, they’re gone. So good." - Beth D’Addono

Where to Find the Best Charcuterie in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Three words: Hog’s head cheese. That terrine-like velvety pork spread is just one of the specialties at this family-owned supermarket in Bayou St. John. Terranova’s is adored for its authentic sausages — the hot Italian is the bomb. Pop in early on a on Saturday and you might score a muffuletta piled high with meats, cheeses, and olive salad on airy rounds of seeded Italian loaves." - Beth D’Addono

I'm really happy for you guys to embark on the next stage of things, but at the same time, I'm really going to miss you. Not only the convenience and quality, but camaraderie and genuine neighborliness and friendship. As I mentioned yesterday, Terranova's has been a fixture my whole life. And I'll never ever forget and will cherish how above and beyond caring and wonderful you all were to my mother, even with joking about our all meeting for coffee in the afterlife back in our little shared corner of St. Louis #3. Thanks again for all the years. Adolph

Oh my!!!! Best hogs head cheese every. Very meaty and seasoned to perfection. This is the only place we buy our hogs head cheese.

They have really interesting items you don’t see at most grocery stores. The lady checking people out was very personable and seemed to know customers by name. And most importantly.. THEY HAVE BOAR’S HEAD! Only place in Nola I’ve found it.

Stopped in and met the wife/owner and she was a delight! She helped me pick out a boneless stuffed chicken and some hot sausage from the freezer case as well as some tasty looking lemon cookies.

Google
First: the butcher Sr. Terranova and his delectable stuffed pork chops!!! The quality of the butcher’s products and pricing is incredible and hard to find this day and age. His family as well! Little did I know his daughter is an SP and also my neighbor. In the aisles: The specialty pastas and sauces are priced reasonably next to pantry staples. Everything I adore about New Orleans in one triangle shop. I do my best to support this butcher and his family when I can. Thank you Terranovas for all you do for the community 🫶 🇮🇹🍖

Google
I was walking by on my way to the park and had to stop in. I'm so glad I had my little cooler bag with me because they have an amazing selection of house made sausages! I bought the Green Onion and had it it red beans. Wow! Next purchase, the Hot Italian for my pasta sauce! They have pastas from Italy, and the woman at the register ...... sweet!!

Google
Best Italian and green onion sausage in the area!! Great selection of Italian pasta, canned tomatoes, Etc. Produce is always super fresh and love Karen’s signs and all the family banter. Nice and affordable selection of wine too!!

Google
Never once did I not find what I was looking for in this little gem of a store and I did try to stump Karen occasionally. From Clam Juice to homemade Italian Sausage, if you can't find it ask (you may even be directed to something better). I was just dreaming about their Italian sausage wrapped in puff pastry and dipped in honey mustard sauce, yum...Lori Laidella

Yelp
This is a neat and friendly neighborhood grocery store. I like this spot. Prices are reasonable, and customer service is top-notch. They also have a meat department to cut your choice of meats. Although it isn't very big, there is a great selection of local and quality brands within the store. Awesome little spot to pick up some goodies.

Yelp
When you need a cold drink with your hot Jazz, stop by and visit the charming market.

Yelp
Amazing grocer! They custom cut, fresh chickens! Ground beef is REMARKABLY FRESH, and they have two kinds of house made sausage. I love to support this small, corner grocery story!

Yelp
How have I never reviewed Terranova's?? This is my favorite old school, family owned grocery. It's located on beautiful Esplanade Avenue near the cemeteries, Holy Rosary, Cabrini and City Park. You must stop by when you're in the area. They have a meat counter in the back of the store where the butcher sells stuffed pork roasts and chickens. Do yourself a favor and pick one up for dinner. My favorites are either the boneless chicken or pork roast stuffed with their artichoke stuffing. The butcher will give you cooking instructions and wrap your choice of meat in butcher paper. He'll even write the instructions on the paper. They have a great inventory for a small place, and the family that owns and operates Terranova's is fantastic. They're all so friendly and make you feel at home.

Yelp
The guy who work in the Delhi meat dept. I think his name is Anthony, either he hates people or hates his job, is also very impatient. Horrible customer service, and doesn't wear gloves when handling meat. The Husband and wife are wonderful who owns the Bussiness. Person whoever is on the register is usually friendly.

Yelp
My grandparents lived on Grand Route St. John and later on Verna St., both right off Esplanade. Terranova's was their neighborhood grocery, dating back to the '40s, at least. I still love going in there and my brother swears it has the best hogshead cheese in town. Going to buy up a bunch to freeze next time I am in from Houston.

Yelp
The Best Hogsheads Cheese in New Orleans and one of the best Muffulettas, too. A great neighborhood store with really good prices!

Yelp
THE BEST.... Hog's head cheese my family has ever eaten! And I come from a long line of superb cooks. Two thumbs up! Heading back to LA tomorrow and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get more!!

Yelp
As an Italian Texan, I always seek out old school Italian grocery stores with homemade sausage and other rarities. This is what lead me to Terranova's. Good homemade Italian sausage (I would like if they added more finocchio and crushed red pepper) but still a flavorful sausage. Strong ups for their Hog's Head Cheese. A real pleasant surprise. Haven't tried the other varieties of sausages, since I only have so much room in my cooler for the haul back to TX, but I'll be back soon. Cool old store, real close to Cafe Degas, another foodie stop you need to consider.

Stephen W.

Yelp
The best Italian sausage in New Orleans. I stop here every time I'm in town to pick some up! The stuffed artichoke pork chops and green onion sausage are also great items.

Tony F.

Yelp
Terranova's has the best beef in the city. I go for the filet mignon. Since it's a Mom & Pop store, I make an effort to pay with cash so they won't have to pay swipe fees.

Yelp
If you go to New Orleans and don't go to this family business you might as well not go to Nola. Best service and Meat market for over 90 years

Yelp
Even if I didn't live within walking distance to this classic little family-run corner grocery store. I would be happy to travel to get the fresh-in-house-made Italian Sausage, honestly the best I have ever tasted in my life. I recently tried the Hog's Head Cheese (also made in-house) and it does not disappoint, perfectly seasoned and meaty. I love to support the local merchants and in this case, it is because they are better than the big-boys. Added bonus: I noticed that they have beers priced better than "the place across the street".

Yelp
This small grocery has some of the Best Italian sausage, hogs head cheese and other speciality meats. You have to come early or they run out.
google avatar

Steve I.

Yelp
I adore Terranova's! They have a little of everything. Small family-run grocery store that puts customer service at the top of its list. But what I truly love about Terranova's is their sausage! I love almost every kind of sausage imaginable and all of their sausage is made from scratch by the owner and his son. Best sausage in town!! If you come early enough on a Saturday morning they also sell a few muffulettas. Only on Saturdays though. Great neighborhood feel. Incredibly friendly people. Wonderful grocery! If you come once you will come again and again.

Yelp
Super Hogshead Cheese n Sausage This is a longtime small gem corner store in New Orleans perhaps serving the best hogshead cheese in the metropolitan area. Their hot and Italian sausage is top ranked. You don't have to travel to Scott La. for good hogshead cheese if you have ever tried theirs.

Yelp
Can only purchase muffuletta on Saturday. Went to Nor Joe's and bought one during the week and was totally satisfied.

Yelp
I grew up in Mid-City & attended Holy Rosary in the early 80's w/my sister at Cabrini...used to love going to Terranova's after school, then make our way back through the schoolyard to catch the Roman Candy guy & his horse on Moss St. on our way to hang out on the Silver Bridge over Bayou St. John...so glad this supermarket is still there, I think it's even the same color, a special location right out of the past...

Yelp
If you're looking to buy a handful of groceries for a meal, for instance, Saturday breakfast with friends, Terranova couldn't be more perfect for that 10/15-something ingredient list, especially when it's a hop (no need for the skip and jump) away. The weather was amazing the other day, and you really feel like you're contributing to your local community popping in here. They have a bike rack on the side if you're two-wheelin' it. It kind of reminds me of the grown-up version of the Children's Museum grocery store because it's so small but has the meat market, some produce and a good amount of everything in between for its size. We picked up their locally made Hog's Head Cheese to put over grits; bacon; some delicious pancake batter; and some Bloody Mary mix for a great breakfast with friends. Next time I need to try this sausage everyone is writing about! I absolutely suggest whipping up some grits with Hog's Head on top...add a dash of hot sauce and pepper for some heat. I think Steve I's review nails it. The customer service can't be beat and is, hands down, the best out of any grocer in town. Very personable, and if you go there often enough, they'll find out your life's story. Pro-Tip, only buy what you can carry unless you bring one of those cute old lady shopping carts that you can push home. #punyarmproblems

Yelp
This place is the BEST. At first, I didn't fully realize how wonderful it is, because my initial few visits were for something they didn't carry, and therefore I decided they were useless and didn't go back for months. I can't remember what brought me back, but on that fateful trip I realized that they do, in fact, have virtually everything I need, and the people there are super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
So what yous guys talking about???? I was born in NYC and was weaned on Italian sausage and you want me to try the Italian sausage in NOLA???? What are you crazy???? Damn, was I glad I did try Terranova's Italian sausage because it was as close to NYC sausage as I have had since my last visit to the Big Apple. What an amazing small grocery and butcher. If I lived in NOLA I would be here weekly to get my fix of great food. Give these guys a try and you will see what I mean.

Yelp
An Excellent little grocery that has a stellar meat counter and of course their super famous sausages. I also love their stuffed pork chops. The selection is pretty good here and if you are in Mid City it is SUPER convenient. Their prices are reasonable so that's also a plus.

Yelp
*****Closed on Sundays***** We just moved here from NY, and this sausage is hands down the best for our Sunday Dinners! Reminds me of home!
google avatar

Yelp
The best hot sausage in the city, bar none. Made in house and fresh as can be. If you're buying from any other place, you're making a mistake
google avatar

Yelp
I frequent Terranova's about 3 times a week. I love that i can get in and out of there within minutes and have great customer service. The 2 butchers are a father son combo that have been doing this their entire lives. The 2 cashiers are the mom and daughter in law. They know exactly what you are going to get and will help you with whatever you want. The best sausage in the city by far The best hogs head cheese I have ever eaten and Ms karen gets fresh produce every morning and will put bad produce on her shelves. Try the stuffed pork chops as well

Yelp
I had known about Terranova's Supermarket for a few years before actually being able to visit; I also knew the Terranova family name from my genealogy research in Sicilian records. There is an automatic feeling of respect in my mind for someone who makes or prepares something with their own hands. Being that Sicilia accounts for a large part of my heritage, I will often search for any cultural links to that part of me wherever I may be. When I learned that the Terranova family still owned and operated the market and that Anthony and his father made the sausage, it gave me hope for the future that a way of life had not been extinguished by modern times and mass production; my own great grandfather Salvatore and my mother's uncle Thomas both knew about meat preparation as well as produce. When I first visited the Terranovas, I was on foot and having urinary tract issues. They did not hesitate to let me use their personal bathroom in the back without even ever having laid an eye on me before. As a constant traveler for some years now, I have not always experienced such welcoming ways. I will not forget their kindness to a stranger.

Yelp
This is the best meat market in town. Hands down the BEST Italian sausage in the area. Blessed that they are my neighborhood market. Love this store. Super friendly owners too!
google avatar

Hannah G.

Yelp
AWESOME! Best Italian sausage I think I've ever had. Also, they have real German chocolate! Definitely a great little store (:

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best Italian sausage in the City. As an Italian-American with a family who ran a market quite similar to this one in Miami, I can say this is absolutely amazing. If you're fluent in Italian, these people will speak it to you with great courtesy. The absolute real deal!
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
You can not find a better place to buy your groceries than at this family owned and run establishment. Best meats and sausages in town. Get there early on Saturday morning for their Muffalotta! I just love this place.
google avatar

Dan E.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood grocery plus butcher shop. Nice selection and very reasonable prices. As quick as a convenience store but priced like the real grocery store it is. The owners and staff could not be friendlier. The best grocery in Mid-City.

Yelp
I am born & raised and I attended Holy Rosary Academy school in the 80's. I must say I miss this store so much. From the character, the service, and family owned run business, the candy. My mom bought all the groceries needed for my grandmother's kindergarten school from Terranova. Everything is awesome. Totally miss it.

Don B.

Yelp

Yelp
I wish they'd open a branch in Metairie!! I live near the airport, directly behind a Rouses Market, and i travel here several times a year just to buy their Italian sausage. It's the best in the area, if not the state. And I can't believe the reasonable prices; you would expect the mark up to be high, but they aren't. The owners are friendly, courteous and helpful. Two thumbs up for the best little market in the city.

Danny W.

Yelp
We love Terranova! They have a very good selection of pastas, the meats are wonderful, and the people are friendly and very helpful. Last time we were in the city we went there just to get a little bit of Italian sausage and walked out with three bags of groceries, including a good selection of the best sausages and meats we've had in a long time. Highly recommended!!

Robert T.

Yelp
Three generations of Terranovas make this place a neighborhood treasure. The butcher shop is special and Italian sausage and stuffed pork chops are famous and delicious. They get specialty items throughout the week, italian breads and other goodies. Their produce has been really good lately too.
