Where to Drink Natural Wine in the Bay Area - Eater SF

"Terroir is one of the old guards in the Bay Area’s natural wine scene, opening its SoMa storefront all the way back in 2007. Since the beginning, they’ve focused their short by-the-glass list and large cellar on biodynamic, 00 wines from the old world, mostly from France. The space is open and airy, with a variety of seating options, from cozy intimate corners to tables set for a party – and there’s always some vinyl on the stereo. The by-the-glass list always has some great entry-level natural wines and a few deeper cuts, so don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations." - Sam Chapple-Sokol

"Terroir Natural Wine Bar and Merchant, Soma by Airbnb. Don’t expect to find Napa Cabs or Sonoma Chardonnays here. Lesser-known natural wines are Terroir’s raison d'être. Committed to providing an unadulterated taste of a place, the owners and self-proclaimed “wine geeks,” Luc Ertoran and Dagan Ministero, only pour wines produced without pesticides, herbicides, commercial yeast, or any of the other chemicals commonly used in modern wineries. Rendezvous with your boo or settle in with friends and explore the daily selection of wines scrawled on the chalkboard behind the bar. French wines from the Jura and Loire Valley dominate the list, along with selections from Italy and California."

The decor isn't going to wow you, but I'd have to say, the wine list was the most interesting I've seen in SF so far. Natural ferment, boutique producers from good wine growing regions. Sadly no Champagne on pour which seemed strange considering it is a French wine bar. I was told the wastage is an issue so I tried a Cava instead together with a Morgon and white Beaujolais. Salami was fantastic.

Google
The bar is cool. We were there with a bunch of people for a birthday party. But on a Saturday night, they only had one person working there so it was a bit crazy. They ran out of glasses. Overall it was fun but not very organized. It felt like a house party where you pay all your drinks. And there are no other options beside snobby wine. The food was decent, pricey but good tasting.

Google
Rude and pretentious staff as a bunch of other reviews were pointing out. I asked for a strong wine, the bartender served me an really light one, I gently said it was really good but I wanted smthg stronger, he rolled his eyes HARD and said "of course it's good!!" Then started serving other people to show me he wasn't into it anymore..then came back to me eventually and picked whatever other bottle in front of him and served me a ridiculously small amount in a $38 carafe. Also, I've rarely seen a cheese platter that small, they get the gold medal of San Francisco 🥇, I'm pretty sure they laugh while preparing it, those tiny little raisins on the side are a real game changer! We also had to wait 30mins to get it, our wine glasses were already empty, wasn't even at crunch time. I would give 0 stars if possible.

Great hidden gem! The barman was really knowledgeable about the wine...played some good music too! Great spot for a third date!

Google
My absolute favorite wine bar! Wine selection is amazing, full of high quality French wine. And owner changes wine list every week. Spacious and cozy place, nice music and great atmosphere. This is a perfect place for those who loves great wine and is looking for European style bar.

Google
Great wine, excellent boards, mellow atmosphere with a urban feel - pretty awesome. I love wine and this is absolutely THE SPOT in SOMA to get a bottle of delicious white or flavorful red and relax for a bit with some friends or someone special. If you don't drink wine, this is the place to take your friends and family who do - they will love it. The staff gave me great recommendations. I should note, I don't dress the part of a "wine bar" type - kudos to them for giving me great service regardless.

Google
A nice place to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine. Even though it's street level, you feel you're walking into a deep and cavernous wine cellar. Wines are stacked against the tall walls, and a little loft space makes it easy for dates to discreetly enjoy some time together. It was easy to get a seat at 10PM on a Thursday night at one of the many narrow tables with bar stools. My companion chose the wine and the bartenders were generous with their pours. Great spot to grab a drink in an atmosphere that is classy, but also somehow laid back.

Google
Great wine, but it was very hard for us to get service. The bartender saw us waiting but continued conversation and eating with other customers instead of serving or even acknowledging two of my friends on two separate occasions. What stood out was that we were the only women of color trying to order and everyone else being served was white. So unfortunate bc the wine was good and the place is cute but we won’t be coming back. Some more inclusiveness in this establishment is so necessary.

Yelp
Curious if this wine merchant is still open. I've passed by several times and it always looks dark... door is boarded over. Also, the phone number that's listed on Yelp! is no longer in service. What a shame if it's closed. It's been a longtime neighborhood gem.

Yelp
There is a pretentious attitude that the wine server had right when we walked in. "Are we looking to a full bottle or half bottle today?" Whoa, whoa, slow down. We wanted to check out what cool wines you had first. Similar to other reviews, he reluctantly gave us some samples and said we were limited to 3. Okay...so after these 3 samples, we each chose one glass (although he wanted us to order a bottle), and drank it uncomfortably at a high top table - not to mention these drinks ain't cheap. It's loud in this place, smells like body odor, and the general air inside smelled of overpriced pretentiousness. Unlike Arnold, I won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
So we showed up at six and... it wasn't opened yet. The owner eventually did and apologized for being late. It's cute inside but you're hear for wine. We got a great bottle for about $60 that was recommended and we could've drank it all day. We didn't see much else but for a glass of wine before dinner, this was a-ok.

Yelp
Went last Thursday. Drove 25 minutes because my wife and I were really pumped to find a place that does natural wine exclusively. Website, Google, Yelp, and Instagram all said they were open. Tried calling to confirm just to be safe, they don't have a phone number (I think that's a trendy thing now). Got there, closed at 7:30pm (everything indicated open till 10pm). No note on the door. It's possible it was a one off emergency, in which case I'll feel bad, but if you're going to own a business have a phone number or update your website. Something. I also understand this is Covid times, but still doesn't quite seem like an excuse if people are driving to seek you out.

Yelp
Swung by this spot on a Friday night hoping for a chill place to sip some natural wine. Only took 15 minutes to realize this wasn't it. The guy running the spot was way more interested in drinking with his friends than providing service or even taking our order. When my friend and I decided to head out to another spot instead, this waiter literally shook his head and waved us off. Insanely unprofessional. SF should be ashamed to have this sh*t stain of a bar in its city.

Yelp
Came here after work with some colleagues. The space has an upstairs nook almost with a coffee shop feel which would be great for a cozy date or even to get some work done. They play music with actual vinyl records. The red wine we had was fantastic! (Flotsam& Jetsam). Not to sweet, not too dry.

Yelp
I echo other reviews on Terroir's poor customer service and will not be returning. I came here with a group of 12 for my boyfriend's birthday. 1 hour in, I was ready to order our 4th bottle. I stood at the bar for 2 mins reading true menu. The bartender stared at empty space and didn't try to give any recommendation. I ordered, and bartender gave no response, no eye contact and just took my credit card. He did however, glared at my group and rolled his eyes. He gave me the Square machine to sign so I signed. I did notice there wasn't an option to tip, but didn't bother because I was so unhappy with the bartender's rudeness. When he saw that I didn't tip, he slammed my card on the table and said "did I really serve you that bad?!" Actually, you did. I found out later that he declined my card and charged my bottle on my friend's credit card and asked for a tip. I'm so shocked by this bartender's demand for gratuity when he has not done work to deserve it. Please do better.

Yelp
I suspect the bartenders act the way they do here because they get a lot of clientele who think they're hot shit because they throw around "Meritage" and Bordeaux or complain that there is no "zin" on their list. I get it. Terroir is not for those people. However, for those of us that are genuinely excited about low intervention wine and the producers Terroir carries, it's very sad to be treated so badly when you're just trying to discover some good wine and learn. Four of us showed up to Terroir one night and there were about 6 people there. The bartender was so bizarrely curt with us I thought something might have been wrong with him, because we weren't doing anything unusual. We asked for something with extended skin contact and he made a recommendation; it was available by the glass so I asked for a taste. "Nope, not open." Okay, gotcha. Pretty reasonable although I found it hard to believe. Most information was conveyed with zero eye contact and in the most flat, bored delivery, often with his back to us. And I thought the guys at Ten Bells in New York could be a little short! I would have rather been at any natural wine bar on earth rather than this place (and this was my second visit). We ordered a cheese plate and some other food, and one dish wasn't available. He let me know by muttering "Not available" with his back to me. The cheese plate was thrown down on our table 10 minutes later with no explanation as to what cheeses we were eating. We ended up ordering 3 bottles that night, all pretty good. I'm annoyed that the bartender made any money off of us, and will probably avoid Terroir on the nights he works.. if not all together, and just head to Verjus or Ruby when I'm in town instead.

Yelp
Unfortunately we lost another great spot in SF for wine, this place is rarely open now and when it is it's just not the same as it was. Sucks.

Yelp
Never had I ever.. had a wine experience like the one st Terroir. Our wine "connoisseur " was one of the rudest I have met at a wine bar. Stumbled upon this place on a Friday night after dinner & was looking to wine down. Bar tops with stools with string lights- cute & casual. Their selection was limited- no cabs, no zin, no Bordeaux. OK. We asked to try two Syrahs, then decided to get a Pinot instead. I'm not sure if he was having a bad night, but the man was just not nice. Looked annoyed that we asked for tastings, wasn't helpful in selecting a wine for us when we told him what our taste palate was. We got a half bottle of who knows what Pinot (he didn't say clearly and didn't show us the bottle) for about 35$. We sat at a table top, trying to enjoy the space and wine, but the man just left a sour ass taste in our mouths. We downed the wine paid and said thank you. Not to our surprise, he looked up, didn't say a word and looked right back down to his own tasting cup. Rude AF. Not coming back

Yelp
I have been to Terrior a few times now and have always had a great experience. Luc and Fabian are super nice guys and have always been super helpful in suggesting a wine to drink and are always willing to provide a taste of the wine before purchasing a glass. I really also love the cheese selection that comes on the cheese platter. They have this really delicious sheep cheese that is one that I always look forward to having when I go to Terrior. The ambiance at Terrior is super cute and I love that they have the loft area that acts as a great spot for dates. The music that is played in Terroir comes from the record player that they have and they have a great selection of records to choose from. I have yet to have a bad experience here and I really love this place.

Yelp
I have to admit that I think the only reason I've hardly been in this place is that I'm too embarrassed to mispronounce the name. What's even more humiliating is that I've lived really close to this wine bar for years, but I'm constantly worried that if I tell friends to meet me there, that I would say something like "Oh, yes, meet me at...errr...uhmmm...ter-RAWHR!...terrrr-RAWHRRR!" I imagine I would look like an Oscar-baiting Patty Duke at the end of "The Miracle Worker" when as Helen Keller, she struggled to mouth "water" or more accurately... "WAHHH"... "WAHHHHHHH!" Then Annie Sullivan would fall to her knees in joyful exhaustion and say to my mother, "He knows, Mrs. Keller...he knows!" But I digress. It's "tear-WAH", I think, and it's quite a nice getaway from the challenges of the outside world. With the walls covered in wine bottles on rustic wooden shelves (see photo) and simple counter tables accommodating the people sauntering in, it's cozy with the everything's-cool owners quite well-versed in the organic artisan wines they serve. I came with a colleague who just moved into the neighborhood and thought this would be an ideal introduction to the hidden treasures to be had here. We got a couple of $14 glasses of the 2010 Bünter Syrah from Combsville near Napa (see photo). Deliciously oaky with a nice finish. We were the only ones at the main counter for a good fifteen minutes. Young couples started to trickle in gradually, and a small group started to assemble in the inviting loft space upstairs. They offer charcuterie plates, but we just had burgers at the SoMa Inn Cafe. Next time. What a nice low-key way to spend an hour sipping wine while we argued which was the better "Mary Tyler Moore" episode..."Chuckles Bites the Dust" or "Veal Prince Orloff". Now I can say it with pride... "tear-WAH." I know, Mrs. Keller...I know. WINE - 4 stars...pricey but quite tantalizing AMBIANCE - 4 stars...hidden, cozy...perfect for that illicit tryst you have been planning SERVICE - 4 stars...knowledgeable and low-key TOTAL - 4 stars...I think I'm over my malaprop-phobia

Yelp
Rude! Pretentious! I called to ask if they were open tonight when many businesses have different holiday hours. The employee replied "I picked up the phone didn't I?" Wow, way to have bad and rude service even before entering the shop. I've also been there a few times and experienced rude service. They put on a front as though they know good wine, but they don't. Way overpriced cheap, crappy wine. There are many better wine bars in San Francisco such as Hotel Biron, Fig and Thistle, and Blush. I hear time and time again how rude the owners and employees are at this place. Skip it! If you like dicks last resort you'll love this place.

Yelp
Great wine..delicious snacks and especially their Jamaican brunch on Sunday's with Chef Rean churning out delicious food. Glad this OG SF spot is still hanging on! Trying to keep all my favorite SF spots open during the pandemic times!

Yelp
My first time experience was great and I really like the ambiance. I went back second time with friends, the guy behind the bar was so rude and reluctant to let us to try the wine before we buy a bottle (those available by glass) and he did not even tried to explain the wine or help us to find what we like. He gave us a drop of the wine (seriously a drop of nothing that nobody can tell the taste and he saw that we're two people who tried to decide on the bottle) and told us he would charge us if we want to try one more. I've been to so many wine bar in the city and wineries in the wine country. We know we're going spend money on wine and tip and are not tying to be cheap. Unfortunately, this is definitely one of the worst experience. Save your money and open a good bottle of wine at home with your friends than coming here to spend money to below average wine, a drop of tasting and bad customer service.

Yelp
An a-ok place for a glass of wine. They have a great selection, rustic ambiance, cool music and ample seating on the main floor and loft. They also know their stuff. Went in and vaguely described what I was looking for and the first taste was spot on. On the down side, not a lot of food or snack options. Had a slab of cold foie gras with some toast. Not sure what else they had besides pate or cheese plate. Also, once you sit down, no on comes around. Have to go to the bar to get your drink but there is no space because the bar is surrounded by people. At least that's how it was on a sat night. So nice place but self serve style.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, and the space is great (albeit quite cold when I was there). First of all, they don't open at 5, despite it saying that on their website, google, yelp etc. Went to Trademark across the street for a quick beer and waited. It never really had more than a few people, but it was a Monday night to be fair. The wines are listed on a chalk board above the bar. There was one bartender and service was surprisingly mediocre given it was fairly empty. He was busy doing prep it seemed or other things rather than look after customers. I asked a question about the sparkling wine (Vouvray) and he said it was very dry, so I asked if it was Nature or Brut (Nature being very dry at less than 3 grams of residual sugar and almost too dry sometimes). I had to explain to the bartender what that meant - in a wine bar. Then I wanted a glass of red so asked what they had in a Meritage style (Meritage is an american trademark term that basically means blend and usually a Bordeaux style blend, most wineries have their own cute terms for their blends and don't pay for using the term Meritage). Again, in a wine bar, I had to explain, then had to explain what grapes constitute a typical bordeaux. I decided not to discuss wine any more in detail at this point. There is no wine list other than what is on the board, but there are other wines. The thing is some are for sale and some aren't, and customers aren't allowed to peruse the selection, so you sort of wait for him to grab something and then find out if it is for sale. Lastly, they use square for payment. This isn't a home based business, get areal payment processor.

Yelp
I went here one time about three months ago. I sat at the counter waiting for my friend. One of the owners was serving and we chatted for a bit. Then he offered me a 1oz of a glass of wine to taste, which they charge for. No free tasting of wine before making your selection at this place. I then got two half glasses. At the end, the owner charged me for a half glass + full glass, effectively overcharging me by a few dollars. I felt this was deceptive. The other owner (French) was very nice, though. But I won't be coming back.

Gong K.

Yelp
Was there 2 weeks ago and Dagan the owner was behind the bar. He poured some excellent natural wines (unknowingly I ordered 2 that he made, and they were great) and we just wine geeked out for a couple of hours! Terroir I think is a San Francisco institution and belongs on a Bay Area natty wine pilgrimage. This has been a place that has really informed how I think about and drink wine, I can't say enough nice things about it!
google avatar

Yelp
I went on a Saturday night, and since it wasn't very busy there was only one bartender present. I waited for nearly ten minutes before I was acknowledged standing at the bar and then another few before my order was taken. I then waited over a half hour before my order arrived. I went to the bar to ask about it during this time but was ignored for long enough that I gave up. My order arrived only when my friend got impatient for me and went to ask for me. Wine and cheese were good. Service was disappointing.

Yelp
Worst wine I've ever had. I thought the cheap wine I had earlier tonight couldn't be topped. Wow I couldn't have been more wrong. We got two different bottles at the recommendation of the guy behind the bar and both were disgustingly sour and had pungent odors. He suggested we let them air out for 10 min. It changed the flavors, but they still tasted horrible. Gross. What a colossal waste of money and grapes. The layout was nice and it was a nice quiet place to catch up with friends at least. We liked the cosy upstairs area, though the mismatched array of comfortable chairs was kind of odd.

Yelp
If you love natural wine, or you're curious to learn more about this seemingly "trendy" wine making style then Terroir is a great place to be. There's a varied list available by the glass, carafe and bottle and you can pair it with the simple cheese and charcuterie selection. It's all interesting and some may challenge your preconceptions about wine. Ask questions, the staff are here to help! I visited solo one evening and really enjoyed sitting at the bar chatting with DC about all things vino, cheese and travel. I wasn't the only solo visitor, with others sitting around the bar deep in thought or head buried in a book. It looks like it's that kind of place where anyone can visit, solo or not, and feel right at home. I loved the rotating music selection and spied an upstairs seating area that would be perfect for first dates or small gatherings of friends.

Yelp
uhmmm mixed feelings i was so hoping to love Terroir, which pioneered organic, no sulfate wines. Yet the wines we had that night didn't quite make the mark. My Hermitage was great, but other wines we tried.... tasted like uhmm... Kombucha... (including a red and an orange) AND I loved one bartender and was really not a fan of the other guy. The former has wavy hair and an European accent. He's sooo friendly and shares his experience and opinion on many little vineyards. We had a great time catching up on wine The other guy however, was too nickle dime-y. For a taste, he literally left a DROP of wine in my glass... I could barely see it! even my friend was chuckling, thinking it was a joke. But nope, we bacsically had to call him out to get a decent taste AND what's worse, after I decided i didn't like the taste, he got SOOO grumpy. UHMM heyyllo, isn't that the point of TASTING??! Anyhoo, not too eager to go back any time soon

Yelp
Any place who has employees blowin' trees in the bathroom is cool by me. What? You're going to tell me that wasn't pot being blazed in the bathroom? Ok then, I'll play along... I waited on the bathroom for 15 minutes for your employee to roll out with it reeking like pot because they were washing their hands with a pot smoke scented soap. Lets go with that. I really don't care, I'm not even being sarcastic. Thanks to the good wine and chill atmosphere, I didn't even notice how long I waited until the employee was done blazing. That was my first visit maybe 6 months back, I've been back a few more times and it's always good times. Yeaaaaa, keep that mellow low key music going. Tip those lights a little lower. Sure you're a wine merchant trying to slang bottles but you also keep it cool just like a wine bar should. What better atmosphere for snagging a bottle with friends? Or being an employee who likes to smoke on the job? I dig it.

Yelp
This is a nice little spot in SoMA. The owner is from France, he is very knowledgeable and will go to great lengths to help you select the right bottle for you and your group. He has opened several bottles for us to try before, and will not let you buy one you think is only ok. I love the atmosphere at Terroir, you can browse the library of wine bottles as you sip your vino of choice, pick a book off of the wall to flip through as you eat your cheese plate, or even sit at the bar and talk wine with the masters. When you first walk into Terroir, you may get a pretentious vibe, but remember this is a wine bar in SoMA and once you start chatting with the staff you will realize how laid back the entire operation really is. As an added bonus, the food truck Spencer's parks right across the street, so go get some escargot on a stick and enjoy it in Terrior as you try some fabulous wines!

Yelp
I was not impressed at all. Bartenders are not helpful and seem rude. I did not like any of the wines I tried and the food selection is too small and poorly executed. Not cheap either, both glasses I had were more than $20 each. There are much better options out there.

Yelp
Idk - you read some of the elite reviews and you'd think no one knows anything about wine besides the people here. I mean you would think that were true if you listen to them. Went here last night w/ an excellent winemaker friend and another guy. And we were lucky enough to get CHRIS to take care of us. I've been in the biz for 25 years and this place is truly unique. Chris was amazing and I am forever grateful - the wines he introduced were inspiring and it is green (biodynam, organic, and everything else greeny) to the nth degree. Fact is - there are many outstanding wines made - yes, including Cabs from Napa (Matthew C of yelp elitism gone wrong). But I get his point- these guys are so en fuego impassioned about there wine and funk that there is nothing else. They are drinking the koolaid as they say when it comes to wine with brettanomyces. These wines are definitely an acquired taste - I enjoyed many of them, my excellent winemaker friend and other friend - not so much. This place is an EDUCATION - and make sure you talk to Chris - this guy is off the hook, he has to be one of the most persuasive guys I've met and he took as much harassment as he gave out - it was Awesome.

Yelp
We had a great first trip to Terroir yesterday! After a recent trip to Paris, and a day spent wine-crawling the East Bay, we've been fully bitten by the natural wine bug. So, we knew we had to stop by a little closer to home. Both the day & evening crew (oops, we managed to stay through a shift change!) were great, and super friendly and helpful with suggestions. I'd definitely recommend approaching their offerings with an open mind, and let them guide you towards some of the unexpected and exciting options on their wine list. Don't go in assuming you'll be able to get a glass of your favorite Napa Cab, that's just not what the focus is here. We also tried a couple of cheeses and the duck rillette -- all very tasty! Prices are totally reasonable for SF, and it's a cute space with lots of ambience for a chill date night or a small group gathering. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The best part about wandering into a random wine bar on a Thursday with one of my best friends is that we both walk in and exclaim, "I want to live here!" The rustic decor, the romantic candle lights, the simple but awesome wine shelves made from wine crates lining the walls. We love places like this, LOVE. The wines here are not for the faint of heart. $16 for a glass? Yes, it's expensive. But they also serve organic wines that taste great from places you never heard of. Service: minus two stars. Our bartender ignored us for a good 5 minutes just chatting with people and we had to wave at him to get our attention. It's a small bar that seats about 8 people, but he just chose to carry on his conversation without giving us a glance. RUDE! When I asked for a white wine with a buttery taste and full mouth feel, I could see him rolling his eyes. He turned his nose up and said that they don't serve that kind of white wine and the closest he has is Domaine de la Tournelle Arbois. I asked for a tasting and I could see him rolling his eyes again and then he said no, I won't open a bottle. Seriously wanted to smack his unshaven face into the bar. Excuse me, but the last time I checked, you were suppose to provide service. Take your snobby ass and stick it. Anyways, I ordered a glass of the damn Arbois so he would shut up and just open the bottle. My friend gets the Syrah. We go back to our bench with the nice candle light and forget about the ass at the bar. Then we relax, sip our delicious wine and enjoy the bar. I love that their wine is organic and unfiltered so I felt great afterwards, no headaches whatsoever! This place is really vibes with me in it's decor and unassuming loveliness. Maybe we just got a bad bartender, I'm hoping to come back to this lovely place and enjoy another glass of their delicious wine.

Yelp
If you love Ordinaire in Oakland, Terroir is Your Spot for natural wine in SF. I'll update this review with specifics once I find the paper I used to note the wines we loved!

Yelp
Came here after dinner at Radius across the street for some chit chat and wine. I almost don't want to review this place cos I don't want it to get too popular! (want it to be our own hidden gem!) One word. LOVED IT! Chris gave us (a group of 8 girls) a special tasting menu from sparkling to white to red. (This is off the menu he says) Ambiance was relaxed yet classy. Music was not too loud. It was a perfect place to chill and have a conversation with your friends. Price was reasonable. Wines by the glass ranged $9-14 ish. Bottles $35-60. Chris was friendly and very knowledgeable. They have wines that are not just organically produced but some that don't have any added sulphites or additives. (I'm not allergic to sulphites like some are but I have to say that I didn't have that "hangover" feel that you can sometimes feel after drinking wine the next day. Wines generally didn't have as strong of a flavour or taste like the standard wines that you are used to - but it seemed like a trait for natural organic wines. (Apparently wineries can say that they use organic grapes - but apparently they often add additives during the fermentation process. I wasn't just blindly drinking - I was actually listening lol) The place is not huge so if you want to go in with a group of 20 people it maybe difficult to find seating for everyone.

Yelp
Terroir is an experiment, a dare, a comedy, a sitcom, a poem. It is so monothematic it makes me nervous. They are completely about what they are about -- low-sulfite, handmade, small-batch wines -- and they are not at all about what they are not about. They don't hedge their bets -- so you'll either love it or hate it, I think. I've been three times and I'm a fan. Part wine shop, part wine bar, and you can get little nibbles. It's be a great place to come with a group. No table service. Not a lot of "specials" or "bargain bin" action. Note that the cheapest bottles they have are around $12. No "flights." No T-shirts. No "merchandise". Nothing for customers who don't like wine. If you've ever read "The Harness" by John Steinbeck you know what Terroir is like: they're all in.

Yelp
I have come here more than one time in the past four years due to the fact that my husband and I love the SOMA and Mission area, we do our best to stay there when we run Bay to Breakers. Since there are "googillion" reviews on here and one from the Yelp Community Manager of SF, I can't add to this place. So I will not try to do so. This is a personal note to the owner who was kind, respectful and generous with his wine offerings and showed amazing hospitality to my husband and I. Hell the guy remembered my husband from two years ago when he had to *blushing* shoot me with a blow dart to get me outta this place. This gentleman, the owner KNOWS real wine and is not caught up in the snobbery and phart whiffing that sometimes overtakes Napa and Sonoma. It's pricey but it's worth it. Organic wines, from exotic far away places other than Argentina and Chile....those are not exotic places but anyhow you get my point. My only disappointment is that I was too hung over from drinking at the Zeitgeist the night before we left as I had wanted to have this gentleman's cheese platter and a delicious bottle of Italian wine that he recommended. Hang on friend, we will be back next May for Bay to Breakers and some vacation time. I will be back to your place. Thank you for treating us so well. Best! :)

Yelp
I don't usually do reviews, and I usually don't care about service. I've been here before a few times and had a good experience, but I probably won't go back. From tonight: Me: Could I please try some of the pinot blanc? *several minutes later, poured* *several more minutes pass, and the person looks at me, or maybe doesn't even* Me: Hmm, I'm not sure I like that one.. Him: "Cool." *takes glass, turns around, starts doing something else for several minutes. Ok. No "what are you looking for", "what did you think", "can I get you something else", or anything? Or just being a human being? I wander back to my friends because I don't feel like sitting and looking at this guy's back for another 5 minutes. Keep in mind nobody else is at the bar. I eventually went back and ordered a glass of something that ended up being unremarkable.

Yelp
Before the eh, there is a lot of good to this place. Pros: Super cool decor worth at least taking a peek inside live music occasionally upstairs seating area usually never too packed good wine (I think? Only been once) I don't know much about wine. Let's just put that out on the table right now. I like wine. I know I like red over white. I know I usually prefer a Pino. That is where my wine knowledge ends. So when stepping into a place like this I get excited. I want to learn. I want to get cool recommendations. A chance to maybe pick up a name or two of a wine I can keep asking for. I didn't get any of that. I got a snobby server at the bar that gave me the most smug you seem like you don't belong here service. I got a patron at the bar laughing when I couldn't pronounce the wines so I just picked a number? haha. It was silly of me I know. But man. This place is so close to my place. I was hoping for a consistent spot, but alas no another wine bar in the city with subpar service.

Yelp
Lovely space, great music. These were the reasons we actually took a detour to stop in. Unfortunately the server was on some sort of mission and told my wife (who is a New Zealander) that all the wines from New Zealand are shit; and then proceeded to serve up wines that were totally different from what we asked for or said we liked and then continued by telling us we knew nothing about wine. I totally love to be challenged and to learn more, but this felt more like a beating than being educated, enlightened or guided. I love wine and would probably have had a couple or more, but my wife and I ended up not getting anything and we left pretty shortly afterwards. I'm sure if the service improved it would be a great place.

Yelp
Someone, somewhere recommended we stop in and experience this wine bar. Happened to just make it here an hour before they closed. Glad we did as we throughly enjoyed the reminiscence of a Napa tasting room. Low lighting ambiance filled with unfinished virgin wood and vinyl spun tunes. Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" matching the candles' melting the mellow mood. We had two glasses of a delectable French red that we ended up purchasing (they have a license to sell too) and a delicious cheese plate. Small world, come to find out, owner is from Puna, Big Island. Nice guy, very passionate about our favorite topic, grape juice. We bounced ideas off him to open a similar situation on O'ahu. What a sweet addition to our neighborhood that would be. You lucky SFO bastards. We can only dream.

Yelp
Went here for a party, they have great music, hundreds of records and a large wine selection. The wine is on the higher side and I don't believe they have a happy hour. It is cheaper to purchase a bottle to share with friends then to purchase by the glass. The bartender is super nice and can help you pick a wine for your preference. A good spot to meet up with some friends or for a first meeting of someone. Great atmosphere, very laid back and close to the Bart.

Yelp
In my opinion, Terroir is a terrible name for a wine bar because I spend 5 minutes trying to just say the name. I still think I'm butchering it. It also sounds ominous but I'm sure there is a meaning behind it. It's a really cute venue with romantic lighting, cozy decor, some table seating upstairs, and several rows of bar style seating. You order at the bar, and pay after. The wine selection seemed pretty good - including French and Italian wine - but I was unimpressed with all the wine I tasted. Overall I had the same general feeling at Heart and Revolution Cafe - which was that the wine lacked balance and was too acidic. The bartenders are very nice, and willing to spend time giving you tastes and recommendations.

Yelp
Arrogant, rude, and overpriced. The bartender was talking shit about a couple next to us because they didn't know their wine (lotsa f bombs were dropped). The couple was obviously foreign Asians with limited English. He was so offended that they didn't understand good wine. Wow.... Are you kidding me?? The bartender was a foreigner himself with heavy French accent! 2 stars for nice venue and good quality wine, although completely overpriced. There are plenty of other wine bars around. Never going back.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Me and boyfriend are from LA. Me and my boyfriend decided to check out Terroir because we heard good things, but once we got here, we were blown away! The bartender, named Jay, was beyond helpful! He helped us decide which wines worked best with our palette. More impressively, my boyfriend asked him about natural wines (as if challenging Jay thinking he wouldn't know anything about it) but Jay impressively and graciously guided us thru which wines he thought we would like and conclusively, he was ON POINT! I 100% recommended this place if you're into good wines or! If you're intersted in learning a thing or two about wine or natural wine.

Yelp
The sign outside says, "Wine. Cheese. Records." All my favorite things. But it gets even better than that. The ambiance and decor inside are relaxing, inviting and beautiful. The staff wants their customers to have a wonderful experience. They chat about wine, offer tastes. Every glass I've had here has been inspiring. I've occasionally paused to take photos of wine bottles and record album covers, so I don't forget what I'm enjoying and can find it later if I want to. This is the place I look forward to visiting at the end of a long week, or even on a weeknight if a delightful little wine journey is in order.

Yelp
I've only been here maybe 3 tinted, but it's always been a pleasure. There's small bites and a fantastic selection of natural wine. I'm no expert, but I'd really recommend a visit to anyone either experienced or newly interested in natural wine. The staff has always been great at steering me towards selections based on my flavor profiles and preferences.

Yelp
What a cute place off the beaten track! I'm not normally in this neighborhood, but this is a great spot. Lots of open space, tables and bar space so you don't have to jockey for a drink or a table. There is a small loft upstairs which is a comfy spot to have a more intimate glass of wine. The people at the wine bar were really helpful in recommending a chenin blanc (which was delicious). Prices are on the higher side, but you get what you pay for.

Yelp
I had such high expectations for Terroir during this trip to San Francisco from NYC. It was such a bummer! So disappointing. I am a natural wine enthusiast (no expert, but I'm into learning as much as I can about it). It's a growing and friendly community that is eager to teach about their products, so the expectations maybe were too high. I was planning on spending about $300. Because of the rudeness of the staff, it was not in the cards. I attempted to strike up a conversation the guy behind the bar on Sunday, October 8, 2017. He was dismissive and uninterested. He claimed to be insulted because I said I liked the "weirdness" of some unfiltered and unfined wines. (I was actually quoting a natural vintner who was really into talking about his wine!) I was looking forward to learning more, trying stuff, geeking out bit, and taking home at least two bottles and eating some cheese! Instead, I was spoken down to and ignored by snob who found his phone more interesting than customers. I bought my friends a round and left. I don't care how good your wine is: being nice to people who like and care about your products is always good business. You should try it.

Yelp
The wine is great, so many amazingly funky wines to try but the prices are out of control. I get San Francisco is expensive and everywhere marks up by the glass. With that said the place is legit. Also Fabian is crazy knowledge and ask him anything-- he knows his stuff.

Yelp
I love this bar. The wooden decor, the France wine map and amazing natural wines. The vibe is super chill and they also have bands playing on some nights. It's perfect for an afterwork drink and they also serve food!
