The 17 Best Restaurants In Carmel

"Carmel was a frequent stomping ground for the young, rich, and famous in the 1930s and ’40s. Embrace that Hollywood Golden Age at Terry’s Lounge, located within a downtown boutique hotel once owned by the late Doris Day. Inside, there’s bar seating, a lounge, and a few dining tables, but the move is to head outside to the patio with a roaring fireplace and lots of dogs (Terry’s is pup-friendly inside and out). The menu is classic American—think perfectly briny, creamy caesar salads and french dip swimming in au jus. If you’re not interested in a full meal, ordering from the all-day bar menu featuring an eclectic mix of dishes, like marinara meatballs, Monterey Bay calamari, or short rib sliders is a great move." - allison green, clara hogan

Terry’s at the Cypress Inn is everything you want in a brunch spot—delicious food, live jazz that sets the mood just right, and an ambiance that makes you want to linger. The jazz brunch is a must. Bonus points for being super dog-friendly (yes, there's a dog menu!) which makes the whole experience even more fun. It’s the kind of place you come back to every time you're in town.

We got the Monterey sand dabs and chicken piccata. Food was 10/10 and service was great too. I like how the menu was small which means everything is guaranteed to be fresh. Great place!

Google
Excellent food, service, consistently, great ambiance. Very nice people, experienced staff, dog friendly in several areas. Like a European hotel. Don’t miss lunch and dinner choices, club sandwich, their burger, French Dip; dinner has excellent shrimp scampi. Real Caesar dressing. A true hidden gem. Illy cappuccino and coffees, so great. Pristine grounds and interiors, restrooms.

Best dinner experience we had in Carmel. Outdoor dinning is so perfect at night with the lights. All the cute dogs are fun to see. The service was phenomenal! Highly recommend the deserts. The braised short ribs. The shrimp cocktail. The filet was tender. The Sand Dap fish dish was great. Cocktails were delicious!

💜💜💜💜💜This Place, Everything About It Is Gr8! Much Love for Doris Day & Her Influence on Music, Dance, Dog Welfare & Leaving A Beautiful Business Behind To Leave A Wonderful Contribution To Carmel-By-The-Sea Community & Visitors. To include Dogs Is The icing on the cake. Love the Live Entertainment & Terry’s Lounge Dedicated To Her Son. Well Done. Nice selection of bar bites. Very good handcrafted cocktails. Building design has that touch of Old Hollywood & wonderful old posters from the movies. Don’t miss this place when you visit the area.

I LOVE this place. I have made this my birthday spot 2 years in a row. Dogs are encouraged to bring their owners to this lovely restaurant and lounge for Yappy Hour. Patrons sit in a comfy lounge with a martini and their pup. I got to see the marvelous chanteuse Debbie Davis thus last trip. The drinks and food are great and the atmosphere is enchanting. Kudos to Rafael who took great care of us!

Google
My husband and I found this gem in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea and celebrated our birthdays with brunch. The food was very good and there was a great selection of delicious sounding cocktails (of course we couldn't try them all but the ones we did try were very good, with the exception of the Honey Bee which was just a bit one dimensional. It wasn't bad, just a little boring). The service was by far the best part of our visit - our waiter, Esteban, was very attentive, friendly, and professional (and gave us ice cream and berries on the house). We also ended up sitting at the table next to Denny and his wife and they personally thanked us for coming and asked a little bit about us when we got up to leave, which was really, really nice. We were also pleasantly surprised by the bill-we got far more for the same price we pay on a typical night out in Morgan Hill Great vibe and decorations and not pretentious at all. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Dog friendly indoor motel lounge! Service and ambiance were great. All the staffs were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the happy hour specials in a beautiful lounge. We enjoyed glasses of wine with some bar snacks. The green hummus appetizer is a healthy and yummy treat. I would skip the meatballs next time.

Yelp
I actually dined here for dinner on my last night in town. I sat outside and the courtyard is very cute and quaint. I was by myself so I didn't order much but the server was still very attentive. I got fries, soup and an order of the stuffed mushrooms. I did not like the mushrooms as there was a grainy texture but I sent them back and the staff was very gracious. They had live music and I had a very nice experience.

Yelp
What a hidden gem inside Cypress Inn. We stayed at the Cypress Inn so we ate here often. They had a Christmas Day pre-fix that was amazon and what stood out the most was their burgers. We ended up getting it twice for room service. I never knew perfect fries existed until this place. Give them a go and make sure to bring your pups!!

Yelp
Located in the Cypress Inn, this is like a local hangout and visitors . Great vibe, very busy, great service. I loved the bar area, where there are also dining tables also. They have a great cocktail list, we loved their espresso martinis. Made Perfectly, a great pre or post dinner drink. They also serve food, but we just came here pre dinner for the espresso's, and we did have the truffle fries and the hummus dip with pita which were both great. They have live music several days of the week, we loved the singer the night we went, sang alot of classics and you can get up and dance too. Every part of this place is dog friendly. Which to me was kinda annoying as I'm not dog friendly lol. Many drinking spots other than the bar, you can order drinks in the room where they have the music, out on the patio. A lot of people were just mingling walking around. Great location near all restaurants and town. Go have a espresso martini here!

Yelp
The most reasonably priced restaurant in Carmel! Great place for cocktails! The outdoor patio is great sunny spot and pets allowed! Food is good very limited menu. Great place to hang with your friends and fur babies

Yelp
Amazing food and service was top notch. Very friendly staff and very prompt. Very elegant dinning experience.

Yelp
Terry's Restaurant and Lounge is in the Cypress Hotel in beautiful Carmel by the Sea. The cozy ambiance of Terry's is known for their canine friendly vibe and retro cocktails. Locals and visitors frequent Terry's, the bartenders are friendly and will gladly recount the history behind the classic cocktails. Excellent place to stop after walking back from a sunset on Carmel Beach.

Yelp
Came to Carmel for a mini spring break getaway, and a local recommended this place, since it was dog friendly as well. I ordered the Sand Dabs (5 stars), my husband, the filet mignon, and our two teen boys had the hamburger with garlic fries. for dessert, we had the crème brûlée with coconut milk, and the tiramisu. Service was excellent. The food was very good. Outside the patio ambience was nice and quiet. It was perfect weather in April. When it got a little chilly after dark, the waiter turned on the heating lamp for us. Definitely would recommend.

Yelp
We made reservations for Oct 9,2024 for dinner to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We have eaten dinner there in the past, and know it's a special place. Unfortunately after we were seated, we never saw any restaurant staff again. People that came I after us were immediately served while I only got looks our way by a female sever. Not once but twice. After sitting there for far too long without so much as a glass of water, we got up and left. We instead enjoyed an amazing dinner at Portabella where the service was top notch and so was the food. Terry's Lounge needs to do better. They were not that busy so I can't imagine that was the issue, and even if it was, someone should have informed us that they would get to us as soon as possible. I certainly expected more.

Moni D.

Yelp
Doggy friendly. The drinks are their best item! Pricy but very worth it. I had a Mai tai which was the best I've had in awhile. Then a French 75 which I haven't had in awhile and it was really perfect. App was calamari. Good , but not the best ever. A very nice fish taco - a la cart and 1 was enough. Really full and well sauced. Pup friendly! There were 5 other dogs on the patio. All well behaved. Outside is a lovely courtyard - adorable romantic and warmed with heaters. The service seemed a bit off tonight. The manager was actively helping deliver - so that's nice. Pups are allowed inside even. I came for a drink before going down to the beach to watch the sunset. I'm very impressed with the lounge! Definitely recommend - for a romantic evening or an evening worth your pup! Pricey Also, there is live lounge calming music.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner at Terry's Restaurant after checking into the Cypress Inn. The food was excellent. The ahi tuna crusted in sesame was some of the best I've had. Perfectly cooked, beautifully served, and so tender. I asked for vegetables in place of the noodles and the waiter checked with the chef to see what could be done and told me. I love that. My husband had the shrimp scampi and it had amazingly beautiful prawns. We ate in the indoor dining area where dogs are allowed, as we're traveling with our dog. In hindsight, we should have asked for the courtyard. Inside was crowded and noisy, but the prompt service allowed us to eat and get our pup upstairs quickly. Since we return to the same area for breakfast, it is interesting to see that people bring their dogs who don't like other dogs and then sit in the traffic routes. Not the restaurant's issue, nor the hotel's, but makes me wonder why people do that to their dogs.

Yelp
Quaint, great patio, excellent service. Food was very good and straightforward. Limited menu but they seem to know what their strengths are. We'll be back

Yelp
Still loving Terry's Lounge. We found a shaded table for two on the patio. Our other option was next to the fireplace ... too hot. As we were seated we were warned that they only had two servers. The heads up was appreciated, but not needed. Maria was our pleasant and efficient server. I started with a smooth glass of prosecco which paired nicely with Doris Day's Favorite Chicken Salad. My favorite, too. The portion of chicken salad was what I remembered from past visits. But the serving bowl with a bed of butter lettuce seemed smaller with only a few cherry tomatoes, red grapes, olives, and a small quartered hard boiled egg. I asked for bread and was delighted with four slices of tasty sourdough. I shouldn't have, but I ate it all. DH surprised me by ordering the fish tacos instead of his usual club sandwich. He is not a fan of black beans so didn't mind that the ramkin of beans was tiny -- held just a few tablespoons. In contrast the serving of rice was so large that he was not able to finish it. All in all, a relaxing meal. Decent price for touristy Carmel.

Yelp
The food is solid, the burger had a thick patty, and the fries were good. The only thing is that there is not alot of dinner options, but there seems to be alot of options when it comes to lunch and breakfast. When it came to the dessert, it was pretty good.

Yelp
If you can see the humor in it .. the clientele is older , but it's adorable , there is a lady that sings and sometimes they dance and if you like dogs , and bring your friends and order an espresso martini , I think you can have enough fun . Also , an odd thing to comment on , but there water comes from this gold tap thing (likes pouring a beer) and it tastes like velvet . I can't figure out why

Yelp
Great place where you can eat with your dogs! Food was really tasty. Been there 2 or 3 times. Beets salad was fabulous.

Yelp
After all the years coming to Carmel, Terry's Lounge at the Cypress Inn is still our favorite place to hang out for a night cap, listen to some music, chat with people who work (or sit) at the bar or just watch some old Doris Day movie clips over a glass of wine (or two) During our most recent Carmel visit we stopped by Terry's every night. Drinks are wonderful. If you feel like having a bite they have a great bar menu (with the best burger in town). They also have a regular menu as well as lovely table seating service inside & outside, we just prefer the bar. Employees are always joyful & pleasure to talk to. Special mentions from our last visit go to Dalal & Carlos.

Yelp
The ambiance in this place is great - the patio is perfect for a (rare) sunny afternoon. The service is pretty fast. We really enjoyed the cocktails (the selection is really good!) and the incredible fish tacos

Bonnie W.

Yelp
Cozy place....I had the Sand Dabs, which were moist, lightly crispy on outside & deliciously seasoned. It was served with fingerling potatoes, and I should've gotten veggies instead. My hubby's braised short rib was tender and flavorful. They readily substituted risotto for the potatoes. I had an espresso martini, which was great....not sweet! Benjamin was a friendly, helpful, accommodating server. Warning: if you're not a dog lover you may want to skip this place. They are allowed, welcomed & everywhere.

Sarah D.

Yelp
A cozy and cute restaurant/bar Haven't tried the food there, only 2 cocktails. Pet-friendly
google avatar

Jenni M.

Yelp
I often dine alone in touristy locations and it's always an adventure regarding how I may be treated. I don't think Doris Day would have approved of yesterday's experience. I was given the worst table on the patio (blocked by shrubbery on one side and the server station on the other and then I was ignored. Thoroughly and utterly ignored. Older women learn quickly about invisibility, and Terry's staff was happy to reinforce the sting. I left Carmel as quickly as possible and traveled to Pacific Grove where the businesses seem appreciative of my patronage.
google avatar

Shanna K.

Yelp
We didn't order much in the way of food.. just snacks... but what we had (the french fries and the hummus plate) was good. The garlic fries are really strong so be ready! Service wasn't as good as it could be. Not understanding what a digestif is, for example. Even when explained twice. Beautiful patio and well made cocktails, though. I would stop in for that again.
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
Came for a quick bite after a day exploring the coast and several local brewpubs. Had Castroville artichokes and calamari, just perfect. Great cocktails and excellent service just make it even better. Artichokes can be a bit messy to est,but they were prepared as server brought warm towels and lemon wedges to clean up afterwards. Dessert made in house are terrific as well.

Yelp
Although this wasn't my first trip to the Cypress Inn, it was my first visit to the restaurant. What a cute little place! The food was great. I ordered the Crab Benedict and it was delicious. There's indoor and outdoor seating, but I do recommend the outdoor seating as it's located in a little terrace style patio. On Sundays, they have a little folk-jazz band from 11-2 that was really nice. I definitely recommend this place, especially if you're a Doris fan like me!
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
We were so looking forward to returning, as we used to love this restaurant. Atmosphere was still fabulous in 1920 era architecture. Gone is the Yapping Hour...replaced with Bar Bites. However the quality is sadly no longer there. Bun on four square was crumbly...and not in a good way. Quesadilla pedestrian. Fries were good. Everything used to be absolutely delicious! Service was good. Just a sad experience food wise. Doris would not be happy.

Yelp
We descended out of the hills of Carmel where we finally found parking and settled on Terry's Lounge for two traveling vegetarians and their hungry host. The menu checked all the boxes. Blinded by the high art and higher sticker prices at the shops downtown, we stumbled through the patio entrance to try and find someone to seat us. Suddenly we were in a hotel lobby as several servers grabbed menus and avoided eye contact. Dogs on leashes walked in with their owners. We learned about the Doris Day connection while exploring inside the bar and hotel lobby. Once seated on the patio, we asked to be moved to a more comfortable table with shade. They easily accommodated us after checking with Doris, I assumed. We then met Coco, our server, who earned the 5 stars for this review. We had the greatest service and she made stellar menu recommendations. The sand dab plate and cocktail I had was a smash. Prices seemed to be fair for downtown Carmel. The Vegetarians were as excited as can be with just quinoa and salad. I'll definitely return to Terry's Lounge. I need to find out the name of the cocktail--something with a smoky mezcal and pineapple. Also curious to find out why it's not called Doris', or even better, The Day Lounge? Willing to try other drinks and offerings, and see what else Coco recommends. Que sera, until then.

Yelp
This is a fantastic little restaurant located in a Spanish style hotel, Cedar Inn in Carmel by the Sea, There was both indoor and outdoor seating with a bar area. The outdoor space is in the a hotel's Spanish courtyard and is intimate yet roomy and serene. They even had a band and dancing inside the adjacent to the patio. Now the food is excellent. We had the truffle ravioli, chicken piccata, the Cypress burger, and the braised short ribs. All delicious! Plus even the house red was simply top notch! We will definitely visit again!!
google avatar

Yelp
Came for lunch to check out one of the most dog friendly places in carmel! They allow dogs to sit indoors and everything about is very quaint. They also have a dog menu - though we had to ask for it since it wasn't on the menu. I got the veggie sandwich, which was good but a bit soggy from the veggies

Chris H.

Yelp
This 5-Star review is for the fabulous Expresso Martinis we all enjoyed here; perfection! The bar is located at the Cypress Inn that offers a nostalgic ambiance that in our opinion is unmatched anywhere. And they are dog friendly which just adds to the experience. We just love the place. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Beautiful patio, cool interior and good food in side the Cypress Hotel. Food: Cypress Club Sandwich: 5 Stars. good quality roasted turkey, nice Smokey bacon, avocado (should have been detained, but still good), fresh butter left lettuce, tomato, just the right amount mayo on toasted bread. Everything just worked perfectly this classic sando. Smoked Chicken Wings: 3 Stars. The wing were good, but not smoked. They were the standard deep fried crusted wings with hot sauce and dressing on the side. Nothing special

Yelp
Brought my father here for brunch and he absolutely enjoyed the establishment. Sat out in the courtyard this time around and the weather was perfect. We enjoyed the live music and ambience. Service was on point and never missed a beat. Look forward to trying their dinner menu the next time I'm around. Great little place to pop in and check out their memorabilia or have a drink at their cool bar.

C.J. J.

Yelp
2 stars because of the really cheezy music. Beautiful Bar, very Carmelish however.......the music playing, oldies ruined the beautiful atmosphere....it didn't match the surroundings and really threw me off.....the music was something you would hear, and expect at a Mel's Diner...not a fine establishment as this and it doesn't do the establishment the proper justice, a shame.

Yelp
I keep forgetting to order my sand dabs lightly sauced. However, other than that the execution if this dish is superb. The fish is light and delicate in flavor and the veggies are perfectly roasted. The garden at Terry's is one of my favorite places to dine. Our waitress, Coco was affable and so sweet and accommodating. My dining partner was just " sitting and sipping" her diet coke and latte, which she found charming. She kept me refilled on iced tea, which is not easy with the way i suck down the stuff. Of course we tipped well. Terry's Iced tea game on point. They have figured out the ideal solution to the plastic vs paper straw situation with their agave fiber straws. Bring your girlfriends and their small dogs. It does not matter if it is sunny or overcast ( as it so often is in Carmel). The heat lamps are delightful and the people watching is always divine. This is somewhat of a hidden gem, and it is fairly easy to stop by and grab a table outdoors during peak hours. Five stars!

Teri S.

Yelp
We went for my mother-in-law's 93rd birthday and it was wonderful. She had the chicken piccata and ate every last bite. I had the lamb and it was cooked perfectly. We had a wonderful bottle of wine. The best thing of all was the friendly and attentive service. It made the birthday girl very happy.

Yelp
lovely ambiance and bring your pooch.. caution with the food.. *** FOODIES BEWARE..CANOLA OIL Is the Oil of Choice..used with all cooking and frying causing grave health concerns.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food was good and the entertainment was even better. Loved the live music and sitting out on the patio was perfect. Very dog friendly which our pups loved.

Grace C.

Yelp
Manager at the hostess stand was very rude and cold to my group. Then as soon as they took the bill they started clearing the table before we were done. would not recommend for a nice dinner with friends.

Nick S.

Yelp
Once again we had great food and service at Terry's. The old school vibe and outdoor patio provide a relaxing atmosphere and the sand dabs and cocktails were delicious.

Yelp
This Place I've Gone to a few times was Recommended By a Friend. I walk in getting Seated By Pretty Hostess. The waiter Comes asked what To drink I say Coke. He gives Me A few Minutes Then I order the Sand Dabs. I've had them before They are Lightly Breaded Not Heavy Pancho breading as some restaurants do. A good portion of 3 Filets. My Server Never came by to see If I needed anything Tho the Manager Did. Service Terrible.
google avatar

Cesar C.

Yelp
One day walking around in this beautiful city took my phone and I find this beautiful place Humberto was super friendly food excellent and love the ambiance definitely I will come back soon
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
We have been coming here for over a decade with our pups. We have gotten to know so many great people here over many lovely meals. The all day bar menu has some light options as well as more substantial fare depending on your appetite. I usually order the calamari which is prepared in a light tempura batter and Moroccan spices. The smoked chicken wings and meatballs are nice shareable snack as well. For lunch, I usually get the sand dabs (a local favorite!) or the generously portioned French dip with a lightly toasted bun and a flavorful au jus and creamy horseradish sauce for dipping. Today, I opted for the Nathan's hot dog on a toasted pretzel bun. You really can't go wrong stopping here for a quick bite with your fur baby!

Yelp
Food wasn't good. Don't recommend, there are so many fabulous restaurants to choose from.

Rick P.

Yelp
We came to Terry's for lunch while staying a few days in Carmel. We absolutely loved this place. Our server was Coco and she was super friendly, energetic and provided GREAT service! We had the Fish Taco plate (which came with beans and rice) and also the Triple Decker Turkey Club (which came with fries). The portions were large and the food came out fresh and hot and was of good quality. We ate on the patio which was nice, they had umbrellas for shade and heat lamps as well if you get cold. Will definitely comeback here if we are in Carmel again!
google avatar

Carmen C.

Yelp
Events Director Dalal and the rest of the team provided excellent service to our party of 30 people a few weeks ago. The wine, cocktails, and food were delicious and we received amazing feedback from all of our guests! The Terry's Lounge team went above and beyond to host our celebration. Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
My husband and I attended the Nike tennis camp in Pebble Beach so we chose to stay 3 nights at Cypress inn . Hotel room was small but cozy ,we enjoyed their complimentary breakfast a lots.... during our stay, we had two dinner and lunch once at Terry's Lounge . The staffs were all very nice and food are beyond expectations; We both love their beet salad a lots ...their chicken rollatini and braised short ribs are both delicious . We definitely enjoyed our stay at this such lovely hotel with excellent service and good food...hope we could go back soon.

Yelp
One of the best bang for your buck meals in Carmel. Located inside the Cypress Inn formerly owned by Doris Day.

Yelp
Great drinks and amazing patio - perfect for COVID outdoor dining. A great place to grab a drink / appetizer in Carmel!

Adriana C.

Yelp
Came here for brunch one morning! The little outdoor area is soooo cute and they had live music which always adds to the experience. I got some sort of breakfast dish. Huevos rancheros maybe. For some reason the flavor really wasn't all there and it was nothing memorable. It's a cool location and nice inside but I wouldn't go here twice.
