I am not a fan of barbecue, but I just had to have some during my trip through Texas. This location is Texas sized (aka humongous) and connected to a gas station/convenience store on I-20 West. I arrived here at about 5 in the morning, when they were serving breakfast, but was able to convince them to serve me a brisket sandwich anyway. It was fantastic eating!
The sandwich was absolutely delicious. It was made with lean meat, and the sauce on it was the perfect blend of smoky and sweet. The meat was juicy and easy for me to eat. You can now call me a fan of brisket sandwiches. Thank you Texas, for allowing me to see the error of my ways! I have finally discovered a brisket sandwich that was not dry.
As a side, I opted to have a loaded baked potato on the side which was humongous and cooked perfectly. I nearly got the beans, thinking that it would be apropos given where I was, but I decided to opt out, since I still had a load of traveling to do.
The gift shop was interesting. It had an array of touristy items, jerky, and even cans of its famous barbeque sauce, which I bought for some friends of mine in AZ. Sure, they are a bit pricier than normal, but that's to be expected in a truck stop like this.
Overall, I would definitely recommend giving this place a visit if you are on a road trip and traveling through East Texas. Heck, I'd even recommend this place if you are a local, it's just that good!
