The book festival itself is pretty cool but the way the city police officers act when downtown is rented is not good. Just got stopped by an officer inside the bookfair whom said our group could not go inside the barriers. Apparently when the book festival rents space it includes the sidewalks, the police say it is all rented “sidewalk to sidewalk” which means to them, you can not go on the sidewalk at all. Quite confusing how the book festival can rent public sidewalks and or the police don’t know that sidewalks can not be rented. Anyhow, just an incident with the cops waiting to happen! It should be the book festival’s responsibility to educate and or provide access to all sidewalks.

The festival may only be once a year but they are working across the state all year long getting books into the hands of our young people. Literary Crawls, Reading Rockstar, Teen Book fest. Volunteer opportunities all year round. And you can give time, money or books, whatever fits your comfort level. One of the best ways to influence the next generation is to teach them how to read and think for themselves.
