I visited TGI Friday’s on Wednesday, September 3, around 10:30pm to celebrate my daughter’s 13th birthday. While the food and atmosphere were fine, the service experience was disappointing.
From the moment we were seated, the host handled everything he took our order, brought our drinks, and made sure we were taken care of. Another staff member (not the host) brought out our food. Toward the end of the meal, a different male server who hadn’t assisted us at all approached and explained that he had been busy with another party, which is why he hadn’t taken our order.
When I went to pay, this same server stood very close to me, watching as I completed the transaction. I adjusted the tip to zero, and he immediately questioned me, saying, “You’re not going to leave any gratuity?” He then turned to my husband and repeated the question, creating an awkward and uncomfortable moment in front of our family. When we didn’t respond right away, he walked off saying “Oh wow” loudly enough for others to hear.
It felt unprofessional and unnecessary especially during a birthday celebration. I understand tipping is customary, but this server hadn’t provided any service to us, and the way he handled the situation lacked tact and respect. I chose not to escalate the moment out of consideration for my daughter’s special day, but I hope management addresses this behavior. Hospitality should always include professionalism, regardless of the tip amount.
