I called Thai Burger Company to share a legitimate concern about their past partnership with Parfait Party Maid Cafe (they hosted them for an event). I was polite, anonymous, and just wanted to warn them about serious labor violations Parfait Party is under investigations with (government agencies such as DLSE, FTC, OLSE, etc for complaints regarding misclassification, unpaid workers, deceptive hiring). I felt the need to alert this small business so that they may more thoroughly think about future collaboration with not only Parfait Party but other exploitative organizations.
Instead of listening or giving a business contact, the owner/manager contacted her husband. He then arrived on the phone, spoke extremely fast, immediately doubted me, accused me of being a scammer, demanded my personal identity in a predatory manner (while refusing to give any business contact, a blatant display of hypocrisy), and kept interrupting with "tell me what's going on right now." I made it clear I was warning them anonymously to protect myself, but they both didn’t listen and responded with aggression. If he truly thought I was a scammer, he would’ve hung up, but he went out of his way to make me feel small and a burden for trying to warn them in protecting their customer base.
He had the audacity to approach my warning, (where I also told him he was talking very fast and not giving me a chance to clarify my goal) with, “I'm really busy, I'm giving you my time so you have to explain." When it was MY free time that I went out of TO WARN THEM of an exploitative business which they were accomplices to.
On top of that, the manager/owner’s husband claimed they "weren't partnered" yet they still hosted Parfait Party. The husband claimed that Parfait Party just “showed up and did their thing,” as if Thai Burger Company were denying public association with the very group they hosted. If the husband acted with surprise at the issues regarding Parfait Party and with respect to my warning, this review would not be necessary.
I'm disgusted and horrified a local spot would treat a concerned visitor this way and partner with a group under scrutiny for exploitation. If Thai Burger Company had been respectful to my call, the initial collaboration with Parfait Party would be seen as the Maid Cafe exploiting the Burger Company’s business.
At the end, since he behaved so inappropriately, I said, “I [felt] uncomfortable and [was] ending the call.”
I was crying by the end. I gave them my time to warn them about a predatory business, but they gave me nothing but hostility and invalidation. This abusive display made me feel very unsafe and disrespected.
I urge customers to pay close attention to the way their staff base is being treated, as these are not good signs for a local San Diego business to display, especially in places that are private like in a phone call.
