Where to Eat or Drink After Hiking in Oregon - Eater Portland

"Despite the heartbreaking impact of the 2017 Eagle Creek fire, the waterfall hikes of the Columbia River Gorge remain some of the most beautiful — and popular — hikes in the region. On the way back, pull off I-84 and into quaint Troutdale for Thai Carnation’s harmony of flavors and generous portions, in a relaxed and spacious setting. Keep an eye out for lunch specials like the sweet-sour-savory three flavors halibut or spicy volcano beef. Thai Carnation offers limited outdoor seating on picnic benches as well as takeout seven days per week." - Nathan Williams

Google
We have tried this restaurant during our visit to Oregon. Our order was taken with utmost care and they were able to accommodate vegan versions for all the items we have ordered. Their peanut sauce portion for fresh veggie spring rolls is very generous and their Thai fried rice, Tom yum soup and papaya salad are very delicious.

Google
Nice restaurant, friendly staff, clean. The food was excellent although the carrots in the curry tasted earthy and unpeeled. Pity, as it’s my only criticism from an otherwise great meal. I’d have given 4.5 stars if Google allowed that. We’d come again, definitely.

Google
I ordered Chicken pad Thai, Thai Iced tea and salt and pepper calamari for pick up. The pad Thai was really good but the calamari was way over cooked and rubbery. For $15 I expected it to be a bit more fresh. They forgot the Thai Iced tea but were nice enough to void it after I called. The pic on the left is what someone posted of their calamari and the one on the right is what I got. Overall, maybe it was just an off day. Otherwise their food is good.

Google
This place took us by surprise. great authentic Thai food. I had the duck roast curry and my bf had the beef pad wood sen. Both were full of flavor and tasty. Portions are big and you'll be full. Place is quiet and was mostly empty, you could see the revolving door of take out happening, and it was nice to sit in a quiet place and enjoy our dinner. Definitely recommend.

Google
First time here. The food is good, could be better, but it's good enough. I guess it just does not have that authenticity or originality that I look for when I go to any Asian restaurant. It's worth trying again though, and order other dishes. So far, I like the Seafood Pik pow and the Eggplant stir-fry. My husband likes the Yakisoba noodles stir-fry. The wonton soup is bland, and they used different kind of wontons. The Lemongrass chicken, not my favorite.

Google
Excellent food, great flavors, We started with the chicken satay. Then the duck red curry was amazing. The tom yum seafood blend soup was good. And the beef stir fry was great. All the portions were great in size. Will definitely return. Thank you, Jose, for your service.

Google
Some of the best Thai food I've ever had. I had the garlic and black pepper chicken with rice. Red curry was also delicious but more spice than I like (I'm no spice to mild). Casual atmosphere. Our server was very attentive and made sure the gluten free member in our party was accommodated.

Google
Love the foods and services. Very nice people, smiling and greeting courteously. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This is our go-to Thai place when visiting the area. We love the pad Thai with tofu (pad Thai with chicken also good, but the two dishes taste completely different), both the pineapple and basil fried rice, and really anything else we've tried!! We've only ever gotten takeout, but ordering online has always been quick and easy and the service friendly when we pick up.

Samantha Z.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and normally it's really good. Today wasn't good at all.. my pad Thai was burnt as hell and wasn't chicken and shrimp like I ordered. Definitely not good.

Yelp
Needed some comfort food after turning in my Mom's apt keys nearby (RIP Mom) & a local area query pulled up this restaurant. Upon approach, saw an almost full parking lot, which I knew to be a good sign. Was pleasantly greeted upon entrance- another good situation! The menu offered a good variety of choices: I decided upon #86 & not only was it filling, but delicious with my favorite varieties of seafood, pineapple, veggies & curry! The service provided was good throughout my meal- very attentive yet not overly so. I would definitely return if in the area again. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Food here is always fresh, flavorful and delicious! The layers of sweet, spice, sour and sweet are a party in your mouth! My favorite is Pad Kee Mao, which is Drunken Noodles on their menu. It's my go to dish when I'm craving Thai because I love the wide rice noodles and flavor components. Their version is light on the heat so I ask for chili oil and add heat to please my palette. They are also light on the protein so I ask for extra chicken for $3 more. One order is then enough for dinner and lunch the next day. Big open space with plenty of booths and tables. They have a full bar. Service is friendly. They also do a lot of takeout. Have their own parking lot making it super convenient. I'm always going from Portland to Hood River and back, and Thai Carnation is often where I stop for dinner to eat there or takeout to enjoy at home.

Yelp
Thai Carnation is a good Thai Food restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food had good flavor. Overall, this was a good experience.

Lei M.

Yelp
Always up to expectations. We order often. Pad Thai, pad woonsen, curries, salad rolls, stir fry, fried rice.. all good all the time

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm because we were hungry and it had been awhile since we has Thai food. We had excellent friendly service and our orders can quickly. The spring rolls were great as an appetizer. I had their signature peanut lovers noodles with chicken and my lovely date has chicken drunken noodles. Big portions and after we had our fill we had plenty of leftovers to take home. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I always get Pad See Ew usually Beef and no egg. And they give a lot of sliced beef meat. And I would give a 5 rating. But this time I decided to get ship to see how many I would get and how much I would be charged. I got the order to go and I was charged $18.00 for a lunch price of Pad See Ew with Shrimp and no Egg. So I was expecting a lot of shrimp. I only got 5 pieces of shrimp!! For $18 that's Ridiculous I won't ever order with Shrimp again!!
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
The place had a nice ambiance. Servers were great, friendly and receptive. We asked for some spoons for hr kids and they brought out cute kids plates and spoons and forks. They have a bunch of things ona kids menu as well. I thought the pad see ew was good, green curry wasn't the best I've ever had but still fresh and flavorful.
google avatar

Dave A.

Yelp
Nice folk but it seems like they make their food xxx sweet and the noodles dishes swim in sweet sauces.Truthfully most Thai restaurants are the same. Their soups are better though.

Wendi W.

Yelp
To be honest I wasn't expecting much but we needed a new Thai place as our go to so we gave it a try, We got the Pad See Ew, massamam curry and salad rolls all with tofu. The noodles and curry with medium spice were flavorful and fresh. The salad rolls were crunchy and had just the right amount of basil. We'll definitely be back!

Kayla G.

Yelp
Because there was 5 people 3 adults and 2 kids they added them selves a 20% tip. I tip but this was very weird they've never done that before. And should say something before they do that

Joanne P.

Yelp
The food and the service were great! Very flexible with options - tofu can be added to most dishes.

Yelp
We ate here on our way to Mt. Hood. We wanted to take some left over food to the mountain so we ordered several items and all of them were very good. We ordered pad see ew, parang curry, one fish curry dish, and papaya salad. The portions were big so we ate the leftover for the next day. The staff were very friendly and service was good.
google avatar

Moe W.

Yelp
We tried Thai Carnation for the first time,I love curry and theirs is excellent.I ordered the Chicken Panang curry medium spicy, the perfect amount of heat for me ,my wife ordered the Chicken Satay with peanut sauce it was also excellent.I have drove by this place many times and we finally deceided to try it,and glad we did we will be back

Ricardo P.

Yelp
We came to this restaurant because we happened to be at a grocery store nearby on our Portland vacation. The ambience was nice. We arrived right as the restaurant opened for lunch. We had pumpkin for appetizer, which was good. The service from the staff was great. The pad Thai and cashew tofu we had was some of the best we've ever tried. I highly recommend coming here if in the area.

Yelp
We went there a few weeks ago since it is right around the corner from us. We were a bit apprehensive since we didn't have good experiences in the past at this location. But this was wonderful, the food was very, very good. The staff was helpful in explaining the food to us, and they were fast and attentive since it was our first Thai experience. There was so much yummy food we took it home and ate two more meals from that. The owner (i assume) came to our table to welcome us as well. Great place to eat, bring the family!!!!

Yelp
Tasty food, hearty portions, very friendly staff! A great place to get Thai food in Gresham!
google avatar

Jessiqa G.

Yelp
The absolute best fried rice in town! I have tried all their different options of fried rice. Their pineapple fried rice combo with the chicken wings is my favorite. Their food has so much flavor, it comes out fresh and they give you great portions. Best place to get some fried rice and pad Thai.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here and everything was absolutely delicious. The service was great, very friendly staff..the place is spotless and comfortably decorated, and the food is very good. We ordered salad rolls, crab puffs, fried rice, orange chicken, yellow curry, & Thai iced teas. It was just a perfect experience & we will gladly visit again when we're in this area. ps I love the metal drinking cups!

Yelp
The food is soooooo freaking goood! I havnt had good Thai food in a while. This place completely hit the spot. Food was delicious while the service was friendly and great. Everything was clean and super mellow. I absolutely loved this place. Will be coming again!
google avatar

Mara S.

Yelp
Super friendly and great service. Charming decor. Excellent food. We have no complaints at all.
google avatar

Victor O.

Yelp
The food was excellent. Customer service was wonderful. We had two teenagers that were their second or third time having Thai food and they were very happy with their food. The restrooms and lobby were very clean. We saw a few locals/natives eating here.
google avatar

Lyann S.

Yelp
Server was attentive, and promptly sat us, provided utensils and brought water to us immediately. Didn't have to wait too long to order our food on a weekday during lunch hour. My spicy eggplant with beef dish was not on the lunch special menu but glad I went with it because it was super good! The papaya salad was made lao style and had a good mix of sweet, sour and spicy favor. I will visit again if I'm back in the area!

Gabe S.

Yelp
I love Thai food and this place always hits the spot for takeout. I typically rotate orders of either the drunken noodles, pad thai, or tom kha soup. It's difficult to find good Thai food in Gresham/Troutdale so I am very thankful this place exists. They are consistent and a decent price for the amount of food you get.
google avatar

Tan H.

Yelp
I love Thai food and have tried close to all Thai place in Portland/Gresham area. Hands down one of the top Thai place for Pad Thai. Food price is a bit more expensive, but the quality and portion justify the price. Service is quick and the inside is clean. I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Ardy G.

Yelp
I want to try other things but the basic noodle dishes are the best I've ever had. Pad se ew is my go to. Drunken noodle or pad Thai both are top notch. The rest of the menu is intriguing tho. Gonna try more soon. Service is great. Chili rack was legit.
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Pretty cheap place and massive portions! The Pad Thai was pretty good, the pineapple fried rice too, the spring rolls were meh. I think this place is better for take out that sitting

Stefani K.

Yelp
I got the king Rama (peanut sauce) with chicken and extra veggies. The portion was very generous and the sauce was delicious. I loved how they thinly slice the carrots so they cook all the way through. Also great that they include cabbage and broccoli to fulfill my fiber needs. The chicken was nicely velveted; thinly sliced against the grain and tender. The lady at the front counter was super nice and friendly. I'll definitely be back to try more of their dishes.
google avatar

Gabrielle G.

Yelp
High quality Thai food! Each dish or appetizer we've had looks picture-worthy in color and is super tasty! Even if we've been the last takeout order for the night, there's no compromise in quality and the staff are friendly and efficient. They have some cute Thai artwork inside.
google avatar

Devin N.

Yelp
Great Thai food in Gresham that carried my family through the pandemic. I think my favorite is the lemongrass chicken, but picking a favorite is difficult because their menu is full of great stuff. Thai Carnation's Massaman curry is also excellent. Actually come to think of it, all their soups/curries are great. Nothing better on a cold winter's night than a bowl of strong, delicious curry.
google avatar

Allison J.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, authentic food. Everything is good! Absolutely my favorite Thai restaurant. I highly recommend you try it!

Tram N.

Yelp
The food is delicious! I love their pad see ew, pad Thai, and pad kee mao. Also their cashew chicken is good too. Overall. One of my favorite Thai place in the Troutdale area. Very authentic!

Yelp
We've only ordered from here but when we do, the food is great. It's fresh and tasty.

Yelp
My son and I were looking to have a late dinner and found Thai Carnation at 9 pm on a Saturday evening. What a hidden gem. My son is a vegan and Thai Carnation was very accomodating for him. He had the Fresh Garden Rolls ( fresh lettuce, carrots, cilantro, and sweet basil in a rice paper roll. Served with homemade peanut sauce). Pad Woon Sen. Glass noodles stir-fried with egg, cabbage, baby corn, snow peas, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, celery, and bell peppers. I had the Pad Drunken Noodles. Stir-fried flat noodles with egg, bell pepper, sweet basil leaf, tomato, and onion. Served with fresh bean sprouts. I added chicken to my dish. We were both happy campers. The meal was great and the service was too. Friendly server and owner. I don't come to Gresham that much but when I am in the area this will be my go-to place.
google avatar

Tracy M.

Yelp
Once again, I had the Crispy Duck w Ginger Sauce. It's a great meal (Duck, sauce, veggies and rice) to split for dinner for two. Plenty of food and beautifully done duck. Sorry Donald. The folks there are always very nice. Too bad I didn't take pictures. Next time I will.

Yelp
Living in the area most of my life and seeing failed restaurant after failed restaurant occupy this space, I've always been leery of going here, regardless of the restaurant. But I haven't found a good thai place nearby so I gave it a try. I ordered takeout (COVID) thru yelp for me and 2 kids. We got deep fried beef pot stickers, non-spicy chicken pad thai and medium spicy beef bad thai. The order was done fairly promptly and the guy inside was nice. The food was delicious! The kids loved theirs and mine was just the right amount of spice. The pot stickers were about the same as any other but not bad. The only negative I had was that the potstickers were thrown in a paper bag, not in a container. The bag was greasy and it just didn't look very nice. It would also be nice if the spice levels were reflected in the menu or when ordering online. I just put my spice preference in the comments hoping they'd see it, which they did.
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
Always fast, hot, and delicious. The portions are substantial and the prices are fair. When you ask for it spicy they definitely come through with the heat!
google avatar

Jackie A.

Yelp
I drove past this place several times on my way to work and decided I'd finally give it a try. The place looked clean, had a good atmosphere, and the service was very friendly. I really wanted to love this place! I had to lower it a star because of the spring roll appetizer we received. They did not match the ingredient description and tasted like the frozen ones I get at Costco which was disappointing. Would not recommend getting these but luckily the noodles were excellent and saved the experience.

Yelp
I hate to come back and do another review that does not redeem my previous review... So I'm going to keep this short we came in here recently and got some to go food... It took almost an hour which meant about 40 minutes past the time they said it would be done. The food wasn't quite as good as it was before and it wasn't the most amazing in the first place. I will say this place has slowly gone downhill and it might be because of an increase in orders that they can't keep up with but it definitely doesn't have the taste it did when it first went from a cart to brick-and-mortar. And with two good Thai food places just down the street I would reconsider especially if you're planning on a quicker to go meal.

Tina A.

Yelp
I've never been to Thai Carnation before, but wanted some Thai to take home. The staff were friendly and helpful, making conversation while we waited. But... The food was either really good or really awful. Spring rolls and salad rolls=great Tom Kha soup=meh Orange chicken=awful. The "sauce" was watery, bland, with little bits of orange. Imagine putting pieces of deep friend chicken in a box and pouring juice from a can of mandarin oranges into it. No flavor at all. Crab puffs=no idea? They neglected to put them in the bag and I didn't notice until I got home. Unfortunately I depended on previous Yelp reviews which showed high ratings. This place was overpriced and disappointingly bad.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
By far the best Thai food I've ever had. Great service! Kid friendly! Would definitely recommend!

Stacie G.

Yelp
It was my girlfriend birthday dinner,we all ordered something different and the food and service was amazing.

Dan G.

Yelp
Do not order delivery from here. No matter what service you use the food will never arrive.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
My wife loves Thai Carnation. I love her ... Everybody wins when I pickup some Thai Carnation to bring to her when she's working close-by. Sometimes she asks for it. Other times, it's a surprise. It's always a winner. I don't think it's the "best" Thai food in the region, but it is the "smartest" for me to get. Her true love is the Thai Carnation Peanut Lovers specialty ($14) with Rice Noodles, Tofu (or Pork), Mixed Veggies, and Thai Carnation's secret "special" Peanut Sauce prepared at the hot spice level. It's number 84 on the menu and number 1 in her heart. It's also ready in about 25-30 minutes whenever I need a quick win. She'll be happy. I'll be happy. Thanks Thai Carnation. See you in a couple days.

Anne P.

Yelp
Best Thai food ever!!! Such a delicious meal, friendly service, lovely decor !!! Definitely will eat here in future! Love it
google avatar

Jerry P.

Yelp
The food here was ok to good. The issue for me was not the taste of the food but was the value. The portion size is way too small for the cost. We had the chicken pad Thai. Very tasty. Not much of it for the price but tasty non the less. There were 5 of us and we all enjoyed the flavor of what we ordered. But all left wanting a bit more. We ordered a side of rice that never came. I might go back if asked by a friend but not as a destination for myself.
google avatar

Rudito B.

Yelp
We were gifted a Grubhub dinner delivery a couple months ago and decided we had to come back. We made it here for the VERY limited indoor dining and got one of the maybe 6 open tables. They are extremely busy with Grubhub, UberEats, etc. Because of this the service was very slow but the food was FANTASTIC! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place! An excellent menu and selection along with great service made for a wonderful time here. The food was delicious!
