The Best Food Carts in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"“It’s in the parking lot behind the strip club,” is how you know a food rec is going to either be really bad or exceptionally good. Thai Champa falls into the latter category, and the longstanding Thai cart has been the secret weapon for Burnside bar crawlers for more than a decade. These days the menu is pretty pared down, but everything on there’s a hitter. The convivial husband and wife duo behind the counter are half the appeal, and best of all the cart is open till midnight, an increasing rarity in early-to-bed Portland. Fair warning: If you’re not a Hot Ones fan even the medium spice level may leave you weeping in the aforementioned strip club parking lot." - Ben Coleman

I had a fantastic experience here! I let them know that my son has a peanut allergy, and they were incredibly accommodating and careful with our order — which I really appreciated. The chicken pad Thai was amazing: not dry at all, with a perfectly balanced sauce,The fresh cabbage and carrots added a nice crunch, and the small egg roll on the side was a cute and tasty touch. And I have to say — the Tom Yum soup was incredible! Full of flavor, just the right amount of heat, Definitely coming back!

The food - so good I'm a little annoyed I live outside of Portland and I can't just impose myself on these fine people. The food truck is a bit out of the way, but well worth it. The people working there were unbelievably sweet and accommodating. I had the (mild) cashew and it far exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend!

Stopped by here after a pedalpalooza ride. Delicious food! I promise I’m not saying this just because I was starving. I saw so many people order to go. It’s an alley way gem that is right outside of a strip club (could be a two birds one stone situation for some folks)

The food here was delicious. I tried the massamun curry and the potatoes, which were soft and flavourful. The Pad Thai and red curry my friends had were also just as delicious. The Thai iced tea was chef's kiss. The service was amazing. They had seating and tables provided in front of the food truck. I would come back to Portland just for the Thai Champa experience.

If you're in Portland and craving incredible Thai food, look no further than this gem of a food cart! My friends and I, visiting from Toronto, stumbled upon this place and it was easily the best decision we made on our trip. The service was outstanding, and the staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. On our first night, we tried the Pad Thai and egg rolls, which were simply amazing. We also had their Thai iced tea, and it was great! We were so impressed that we returned the next evening for more. This time, we had the fried rice and crab rolls, which were just as fantastic. If you’re in Portland, don't miss this food cart—you won’t regret it! 😊

This place is fantastic. The owners are awesome and super friendly. The food was better than other Thai restaurants I've had on the east coast. Absolutely great!

Just ordered from here, and they get pretty busy, so I recommend calling ahead. We got: - Cashew Chicken - Pad Thai - Pad Kee Mao - Champa Fried Rice - Yellow Curry Cashew Chicken: Decent flavor, but it was loaded with veggies and onions—perhaps too many. Pad Thai: It tasted okay, but it lacked the authentic flavor, especially the depth that fish sauce typically adds. It was also a bit dry. Pad Kee Mao: The flavor was fine, but the ratio of noodles to veggies was off. There was an abundance of veggies and onions, but very few noodles, though the tofu portion was generous. Champa Fried Rice: Unfortunately, it was really soggy and not enjoyable. The soggy rice overwhelmed the dish. It seems the steamed rice was too dry and undercooked, so they might have added water to soften it, which just made the dish worse. Yellow Curry: This was probably the only consistent dish, with a good balance of everything. It leans on the sweeter side. Steamed Rice: Dry and undercooked, with lots of hard pieces. It wasn’t Jasmine rice—it tasted like long-grain white rice. Although this is a Thai truck, and the dishes came close to taste like Thai flavors, there was something missing. We believe it’s the lack of fish sauce. The seared of the wok, the quality of ingredients. The gentleman mentioned they don’t use fish sauce, which is unusual since Thai cuisine typically relies on it heavily. Maybe he meant they don't give out fish sauce? Fortunately, we ate this at home and were able to mix in some chili oil and fish sauce to add more flavor. Without it, the food would have been quite bland. Overall, I’m surprised by all the 5-star reviews. While the location is convenient and open late, several aspects need improvement, particularly in portion sizes, balance, and the quality of ingredients.

Google
I LOVE Thai Champa! I’ve been eating here for years and the food is consistent and the service is always incredible! Such a great option for late night eats and delish plus they give you an egg roll with ever entree!

Yelp
Atmosphere: Food Truck in Union Jack's parking lot Food: I thought the food was great. Don't remember the name of the dish that I got but would be interested in trying the Pad Thai as well even though that's not usually my favorite dish Price: Around $15 for a dish Service: Extremely friendly service. Very chatty and funny folks. Parking: Can park on the street or there are a few spots in the Union Jack's parking lot.

Yelp
Not sure how I found out about this cart back in 2019 but I've been coming here every so often since! Thai champa has definitely come in clutch for whenever I have a late night craving especially after concert or when you're a little tipsy and need something that will hit the right spot. Ordered: Panang curry with tofu - yum hits the right spot for the chilly night, the rice that came with was very disappointing it was hard crumbly and dry... old rice maybe ..? Pad Thai tofu - saucy, tangy and savory big portion for its price my to go order here! Pad see ew tofu - hard pass on this was too salty from the soy sauce, it made a big mess in my bag bc the whole dish was drenched in soy sauce. There was so little noodle but too much cabbage. Crab puff - Big yes! Freshly fried and filling is perfect doesnt taste too oily, loved the crunch on this. Friendly staff overall just nice people, I'm not sure about their hours maybe just call in first before coming and the chef cooks each dish one by one so there will be a wait! Reasonable price for the portion and I'd for sure order the crab puff again next time.

Yelp
Best Thai food in town. I have to stop here everytime I'm in the neighborhood. Friendly owners.

Yelp
Great Thai food cart. The owners are real sweet people. Portions are good size. I'd recommend Ad Thai!

Yelp
Big fan of Thai Champ. Little food truck in union jacks parking lot. They're fast and have great personality. Their portion size isn't too big but they have such a great selection of food, the flavors and ingredients are soooo good! I would mention ambiance but it's outside... I love that they put some veggies in their pad Thai with a little egg roll and not just egg and chicken like a lot of places in pdx. This is my #1 Thai food go to spot in Portland for sure. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We were visiting Portland and saw this cute little food truck near our hotel. I can't speak on the actual entrees, but the mango sticky rice was out of this world! The owners were friendly and it was open late, so that's a plus.
google avatar

Yelp
The best late night Thai food you will find in Portland. Also the owner is so kind! We came really late one night and he was still willing to make food and was friendly. The food is really flavorful and it's a great value for the price. Never had a bad thing here. It's a food truck so didn't expect it to be as good as it was. I will say it has a kick, so be forewarned if you need it on the less spicy side, ask for mild :)

Martha W.

Yelp
Best Thai place in Portland. The couple who own it are just lovely and kind. The food is delicious. I appreciate that the spice level is accurate. They are so friendly and most dishes come with a veggie spring roll!

Yelp
BEST THAI FOOD! Very authentic! I'm from San Francisco Bay Area I love eating Thai food! The owner Sone or Sune and his family do amazing job! And have the most kindest friendliest smile! I have so much respect for them! Their family has been in Portland since 1981! They make the best Thai food! Best Thai tea! I ordered pad Thai with tofu shrimp and chicken! And I ordered the crab puffs delicious! Also comes with a eggroll with a purchase of $13 or more I think but best home authentic Thai food! Took amazing pics one night I was adventuring Portland cause I just moved to the pacific north west and I needed food after dancing and they were open! They were so good! Sorry I didn't take a pic of Thai tea... I drank it so fast it was sweet and not too sweet or too much tea. It was perfect! Thank you sune/sone and his family I will be back! You all were so sweet to me especially since I'm new to town :) Go visit the BEST THAI FOOD AROUND :)

Yelp
The people are friendly and the food is fire! Worth the trip to get testy veggie rolls and pad Thai!

Yelp
If you're at the strip club at 2 am and are craving Thai food, this is your spot lol. Wait times can be long as she only has 1 pan and makes 1 dish at a time. There were 2 people ahead of our 2 person order and it was about 45 min for us. But luckily they are in the parking lot of a strip club where they suggest you can go wait (wonder if they get referral bonuses hmm?)

Yelp
Hands down, one of my FAVORITE food carts in PDX! I get off the plane at 10pm and I crave Thai food, and of course, they're open! And of course, it's an amazing satisfying meal every time! I often get their noodle dishes like pad see eiw. They are also a wonderful family!!!!!!!! THANKS FOR BEING A GEM IN PORTLAND!!!
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
What a bummer they no longer do Pad Woo Sen! That was the absolute best dish on the menu!
google avatar

Anjali M.

Yelp
This was pretty mediocre Thai food. Not offensive but there are better options in Portland

Yelp
Excellent taste and quality. We had the standard pad that and pad see ew. Delicious. I'll be back!

Yelp
Best late night Thai in the city! You cannot go wrong with the curry fried rice or pad Thai. When their mango sticky rice is in season it's to die for literally the best i have ever had.

Yelp
This place is fire! So unassuming and hidden but I'm sure if you know about this spot, then you know! We found Thai Champa by chance because we were starving after having drinks at nearby Rontoms. It was about 2:00/2:30 AM when we left Rontoms and many places are generally closed by then so we were surprised to find this Thai food cart just 2 blocks up. We ordered the Thai champa fried rice + pad see ew and both were delicious. So flavorful and great portions for the price point. We waited about 40-45 minutes for our food because it was actually pretty busy that night. It's tucked away in a parking lot next to a gentleman's club and the lot isn't really lit up except for the cart itself. I was there with 5 of my friends and felt comfortable but the feeling would've been different if I was there by myself (something to keep in mind if you're there late like we were). Great late night option but I'd honestly order food here if I'm ever craving Thai food any time of the day.

Tony S.

Yelp
We just into Town and wanted to get something simple and quick. We ordered the crab puffs and curry rice which we were going to split. It was too much food. It was very good and only cost us $22. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
Love love love Thai Champa! Everything I have had there has been Amazing! If you like Thai food then Thai Champa is a must.

Yelp
Wow! Probably the best food available late night! We had kind of a big order, panang curry w chicken (low spicy, still spicy for us), garlic and pepper w beef (low spicy), and pad Thai with tofu (low spicy). We also ordered spring rolls and egg rolls. It was ready as soon as I arrived, but they waited to put the egg rolls in until I got there on purpose which I thought was so great and thoughtful and they were so sweet, like 2 minutes! 2 minutes, give us 2 minutes, then she turned and yelled to another lady to put the rest of my order in. I love ordering panang curry while trying new Thai restaurants as a way to see if I will like them and have to say, the panang here is outstanding! Absolutely perfect. Makes me wish I asked for the Tom kha bc if they got the panang so right, I bet the Tom kha is on point too. We really liked the garlic pepper beef and egg rolls too! The food truck was very easy to find and get to. I pulled into the full parking lot and just parked along a wall behind other cars that weren't leaving and was in and out without a problem. I looked it up on Google maps before driving over and looked at street view and saw the truck is tucked into the corner of the parking lot behind whatever building is on the corner. The gentleman running the register and phone was very kind and I enjoyed chatting with him about our mutual hobby of fishing. Great portion sizes, great price, you really can't go wrong and you get to experience the portland food trucks (although you probably already have somewhere else. Note, this one ruck has been there over 10 years in the same spot and is not in a pd of others like some places but is well worth stopping by for the Thai lovers in your group). Super nice people, super delicious food!

Karim K.

Yelp
If you want good thai food, this is definitely the place. The guys working are absolutely friendly, hard working, and personable. Sure you have to wait outside if you didn't call in the order, but I'd rather wait for Thai Champa than my COVID test results. Good food, keep up the good work

Yelp
It kills me to leave a very mediocre review. I extensively researched and read previous reviews on yelp before I decided to come here for dinner. The pics had my mouth watering. The service was great. The person taking my order was charming and told me that the chef had taken a much needed vacation. I was still excited to try the food bc I'm sure the chef had taught the skills and had established the expectation of quality. I ordered the curry fried rice and man, it was disappointing. The rice was overcooked and mushy. There was no curry flavor to it at all. For $15, the portion was small and the execution was lack luster. The pad kee mao was ok, nothing stellar and the crab was rangoons was standard. Overall, I was expecting so much more bc of previous reviews. I can't forgive mushy rice for a fried rice entree. Sadly, this was a one and done. Will look elsewhere for late night eats.

Yelp
This place looks so unassuming and is honestly super easy to walk by without noticing it but don't let that fool you. They have a small menu but everything hits the spot. The staff is pretty chill and it'll take ya about 10-15 mins to get your food but it's worth the wait. The pad Thai is solid and the curry fried rice is super good. The crab rangoons also hit the spot too. Last warning is beware of tryna flex your spice tolerance at a place like this.
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
This use to be my favorite Thai spot! It is still excellent food but holy moly the prices have gone up and I am not sure it is worth it any more. We use this at a "treat" because it has gotten so expensive. Don't go super hungry because the wait is long. The crab puffs are always good. My favorite is the yellow curry, pad Thai, and the eggplant.
google avatar

Margarita J.

Yelp
Highly recommend checking out this place! The guys were so cool and friendly. Pad Thai is my favorite Thai food and I wasn't disappointed. I ate my food so fast it was so good. I loved the noodles and the fact you can choose the spice level. Medium is just the right amount of heat. Depending on your spice tolerance I think anything more than medium would be too much. Can't wait to go back to try other items on the menu

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Some friends and I went to a concert that ended late one night at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and were looking for a good place to eat. We came to find this place on Yelp and although we were first skeptical that they were open past midnight, a quick phone call confirmed that they were open until 4am. After a quick walk and doubtful we were in the right place, we found this place in an alley between a few bars/clubs and it was then that their late hours suddenly made sense. This place was SO good and it was crowded which was a good sign. Their pad thai and pineapple fried rice was amazing - perfectly flavorful, not too bland and not too salty or fishy. I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for great thai food regardless of the time of day. Even though it may look sketchy, give it a chance and you won't be let down!
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Surprisingly great takeout ! It was 10pm when most places closed, we tried this take out spot and the ton yum, egg rolls, and pad thai all hit the spot! Would order from them again!
google avatar

Yelp
Our first food truck foray was made by chance. Got into Portland after a two hour delay. At midnight driving to our hotel, we were hungry. So a quick yelp look for a restaurant that was open that late landed on Thai Champa. We drove by it twice until we realized it was a food truck in between buildings, in a parking lot. We got Pad Thai, Red Curry and Pad See Ew. It might have been because we were really hungry, but it was one of the best Thai foods we have ever had. We have had a lot of Thai. Pretty much every city we visit, we look for Thai. We will be stopping there towards the end of our stay because it was so good. We have visited 4 Thai food trucks since we've been here. This is still my favorite!
google avatar

CJ T.

Yelp
Great food and service! Dishes are delicious and made to order specs. Staff is jubilant and friendly.

Yelp
Best Thai food in portland hands down! Also the owners are always super friendly and fun to talk to! So happy we found this place :)

Yelp
It was late, my group was feeling good after the bars, and was down for some thai food! Found this gem in a parking lot near the Hey Love bar/restaurant on E burnside and SE 10th. Man were we glad we did. As we approached the food cart, the delicious Thai food aroma approached us. I was excited. I love food. We ordered some two soups, chicken fried rice and beef pad see ew. I don't usually speak my language to people I don't know but because I was feeling good, I hit the owner with some Lao words and we were chatting it up! The owners were so so nice. I requested for a homemade jaew pahdak sauce (the best stuff is never on the menu), and they made it for me! Hell yeah! Score! We took the food back to our Airbnb to eat it there. And smash! We all ate too much. It was actually really hard to stop eating, I kept pouring more rice on my plate. The medium spice in the fried rice and pad see ew was just right. Flavor and texture were both on point! I will have to come back to get some more food when I'm back in town.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
The prices here are the best in town, and the food is amazing! They have a fried chili in oil that I think is homemade and super delicious, packs a wallop so if you only like a little spice you've gotta be careful (just a few drops for me, and my friends who love spicy food even say it's spicy!). I've tried their pad thai, tom ka soup, salad rolls and egg rolls, and my friends have basically gotten everything else on the menu at this point - trust me, you really can't go wrong! They accept orders by phone for pickup too, so if you live in the 'burbs and need to get out of the house during the pandemic, you can swing through really quickly :-)

Yelp
Great owners, great food and great prices! Always our go-to takeout cart and never disappoints!

Yelp
Real good Thai food!! I have thoroughly loved the vibe in Portland..in my 4 day trip I have only stopped at food trucks for food! These are everywhere!!and why not??!??it's very similar to the food you get at restaurants think even better for a very reasonable price and did I mention huuuuuuuge poooorrrtions!??!!! Ordered veggie egg rolls ( really crispy!! think they have an offer for every $8 purchase or more you get one free.hehe sweet!),veggie pad Thai and chicken fried rice everything yummy! They take time to personalise your meal,so I'd say give it to them! In the meantime chill at the small seating room they have with music instruments and funky lighting! Lots of scented wipes to self clean the tables you use!(extra star for the idea)!!also they are open late in the night so if you're craving for Thai after a late night party, this should be your jam!!!!
google avatar

Rashi T.

Yelp
Good food , good pricing and fast service . Its a cart that's tucked behind the Jupiter hotel and can be missed if you are not specifically looking to get here . My hubby recommended them and so we came to grab a quick take-out . I ordered the Pad Ka Pao and he got the Pad-Thai . The food comes with a side of veggie roll if your order above $12 . I made the grave mistake of ordering mine with extra hot spice and was sweating by the time I was done eating . Spice level aside what I did not like was that the beans were almost undone , I felt that they could have been cooked a tad bit extra . The Pad Thai was fantastic and so were the Egg rolls . Great portion sizes and the pricing is really good too. Service was fast , but the packaging could have been better as the juice from the Pad Ka pao spilled mid-way . They are located in a parking lot like structure and are open till late in the night .

Yelp
Best pad se ew with beef I've had in a long time. I didn't mind waiting at all. It was definitely worth it !
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered chicken Pad Thai, absolutely love the flavor, portion, spice, texture, etc... The Thai Champa folks are also very friendly! I'll be back many times in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
A gem of the food community that serves quality meals at an unbeatable value. My personal favorite is the curry fried rice but their pad kee mao and red curry are certainly praise worthy as well. I'm not a huge fan of their approach to orange chicken but I'd be nitpicking if I took any points off for that addition to their menu. The price and quantity of everything they make is a heroic effort in a food scene that leans towards higher price points for every meal. Beyond that the time taken to ensure the quality of each dish is well worth the wait Order ahead or sit down for a spell for some of the highest value food around
google avatar

Melanie V.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to this food cart, because I would be eating here every week! I tried the red curry, pad kee mao, crab puff, eggroll, and mango sticky rice. First of all the portions are huge!! I have leftovers that will last me at least two days. The prices are very affordable compared to other Thai restaurants in the area. The food is very flavorful and fresh. I honestly think the quality is comparable to the food I had from the street vendors in Thailand. Their spice levels are on point- I thought the medium spice was pretty spicy. There is a little shed that you can eat your food in as well. The owners are super nice! Highly recommend.
google avatar

CT T.

Yelp
The folks here are super sweet and helpful! If you want the real deal Thai then go!!! Food is always fire
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
TLDR: Not the best thai food but it's cheap and a good experience! Experience: It was a food truck operating out of a parking lot that opened until 3am. I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING. Everything on the menu was $7 and the portions were good for the price. If I lived in Portland I would frequent this joint often. The owner was friendly and recognized all the regulars. He even cracked some jokes with us even though it was our first time! We got the pad thai and the green curry. Pad thai came with some veggies on the side and was flavourful and adequately saucy. The green curry looked a bit odd, like the curry and water were separating. The veggies and chicken were a bit sparse but I didn't mind for the price. But I definitely liked the pad thai a lot more.
google avatar

Hailey N.

Yelp
Local friendly food truck. Chef was super sweet. Portions are good. Great for a late night dinner or last minute plans.
google avatar

Phillip H.

Yelp
The food is always so amazing and enjoyable. Consistency is key with food and these two and their team is hitting the nail on the head. Don't hesitate. Get the fuck here and try it out
google avatar

Stacey L.

Yelp
Great delicious food every time, good prices too. But the wait is always quite long. Even after I call in the order and arrive 1/2 an hour later, I still have to wait an extra 5-10 min for the order. Kind of defeats the purpose of calling in, huh? :/

Garrett C.

Yelp
Chef Air and Sone are not only the sweetest people I have ever met, but they are the most incredible chefs. From the pad thai, to the cashew nut, to the crab puffs, nothing will disappoint. Hands down my favorite thai restaurant in Portland. To add further fuel to the flame, they are very gluten free friendly.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
What a great spot! Went to order but they were busy so first I thought never mind. That would have been a mistake. Dropped my order for Pad Tai and walked to the Scotch Lodge for a drink. They texted when it was ready and it was absolutely amazing! Don't miss this truck, these people know quality chow and I destroyed every bite. Plan to return before I leave!

RD J.

Yelp
I've been to this food truck countless times over the years. It's outside of my normal commute, and the hours changed to later in the night (from previously being available during lunch hours) and I still make the trip by as often as I can. It's very busy with an average wait time of 20 minutes, so I typically call and order ahead before arriving. Great addictive food!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
They were closed a couple of hours to grab goodies for restocking purposes when we showed up, I took that as a good sign so we hit up Burnside Brewing to come back to the fire on and delicious smells! The owner(s)/chef were both super friendly and really nice while we awkwardly ordered our noodle'y dishes. I noticed many folks were coming up on first name terms with the cart and with "regular orders". Another good sign! My Pad Thai was super yummy! If you are a sucker for wok-charred stir fries, you should check Thai Champa - everything has the little flecks of char and toasty flavor. They did both chicken and tofu for me no problem or extra charge! Their version of Pad Thai isn't as sweet and sour as I tend to seek out, but if you like a more rich and savory Pad Thai, Thai Champa is where it's at for you! Partner got the Pad Kee Mao - the spicy seems to come mostly from white pepper and be careful, medium was pretty darn spicy! We found it stated to taste better the more it cooled down, which was pretty awesome. Super nice cart, savory wok-charred noodles can be found here :)

Jaelyn B.

Yelp
The best Thai food in Portland. Absolutely massive portions for ridiculously cheap. The crab rangoons and pad thai are SO good!!
