Mommy Pai’s Opens From Thai Diner as a Chicken Finger Takeout Restaurant | Eater NY

"Built on creative comfort food with a Thai twist, this restaurant has sustained a rare, long-term turnout beyond its launch season, and its desserts—especially the sentient monster cakes—are a calling card. For years, the team used 203 Mott Street as a commissary for those sweets, underscoring how central desserts are to its identity." - Emma Orlow

Top NYC Restaurant Newcomers of 2020 | Eater NY

"I found Thai Diner exciting at first because it was the next phase of the restaurant group run by Ann Redding and Matt Danzer—Uncle Boons all day!—and then it became essential after the closure of the OG during the pandemic; it served as a place where people could revisit and say goodbye to some of their favorite dishes, and it’s now how the duo is keeping their core team employed as they plot their next move, which may or may not include a Boons reboot." - Eater Staff

Fantastic experience! I came around 5:30pm on a Saturday and I was shocked at how empty it was in the restaurant. The waitresses took care of me very well and my drunken noodles were incredible — my food came out fresh and hot only about 10 minutes after I ordered, which was such a nice surprise! I got a spice level one for my dish and it was perfect. The employees were so nice and my food was delicious. And the prices were the most affordable I’ve ever seen at a Thai restaurant. I’ll definitely be back if I’m ever in the area!!

Google
Absolutely the Best Thai food I've found in the area, and my new all time Favorite!

Google
First visit for weekday lunch, party of 2. Nice restaurant decor and zen background music. Started with crab ragoon, which were very crispy & tasty, and dipping sauce was awesome. For entrees, we had Drunken noodles (spice level 1) with salad, and Pad Thai (level 2) with spring roll. Both dishes very good, generous portions. Asked for some lime to squeeze over, needed a little acid. Had iced tea as no beer/wine available. $48 with tip. Very happy with meal, definitely would return.

Google
I have been here several times. They are so nice, like beyond. The place is super clean and inviting and the food….if I could give a million stars I would. You can tell they make all the sauces fresh and I have not had one thing that wasn’t delicious. Everything is made to order. If you haven’t tried them please do. Prices are reasonable and not pocket busters. Love this place, one of my new favorites.

Tina D.

Google
The menu is a little confusing. I would’ve had some other things had I understood the basil rolls looked to be. You can have them with shrimp, but the menu reads like it just has the vegetables. I had the teriyaki chicken stirfry with brown rice. It was excellent. My husband noodle bowl which was a yellow curry and it was depth of flavor and great!

Google
Great food, reasonable price, and nice portions. Be aware that hot is #3 on a 1-3 scale. I like hot and 2 is sufficient for me. Well seasoned food and friendly staff. Be aware Basel Rolls (light appetizers) are served with peanut sauce on the side.

Gelene B.

Google
Food was fresh, flavorful and delicious. Service was great. I got the pineapple curry with chicken. So good!

Google
Great Thai food with lots of options. The service was on point and we really enjoyed the smiles and friendliness of Susie and Mary. Masaman was delicious. Definitely go again next time we're in town.

Yelp
We ordered Basil Rolls with shrimp and with vegetables only. Excellent but not enuf peanut sauce (is there ever enuf peanut sauce tho?). Pad Thai with shrimp for me spicy - also excellent! Massaman Curry mild and unfortunately it was made spicier than my pad Thai and my wife couldn't enjoy her meal cuz she's not much for spice. Also ordered the spring rolls also good. We happened upon this place and will definitely eat there again.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place! We've eaten at prob 30+ Thai restaurants throughout the years and this is by far one of the best if not THE BEST. Service was great! Food came out fast and piping hot! The peanut sauce with the fresh basil rolls was *chefs kiss*. We will absolutely be back!

Keira M.

Yelp
Food is pretty cheap considering what type of food it is and everything I've tried has been good. I recommend the pho and mango sticky rice. Service has been good every time I go. The place is very pretty I felt so fancy while eating there while only paying about 60 dollars for 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 dessert, and the tip. It doesn't get too loud I suggest it for a date night !

Yelp
Surprisingly good food! The place is tucked away in an older style open mall type. The inside is smaller but very clean with newer furniture. The food is fresh, hot, and delicious. They have plenty of vegetarian options and I left satisfied and happy.

Yelp
The Mrs and I tried out Thai Diner based on the positive reviews on many different platforms, not just Yelp. We ordered Pad Thai with shrimp, Tom Kah soup with shrimp, Basil Rolls appetizer and one other item that I can't remember. The food was very good with ample sized portions. Clean interior and great service. Definitely will be coming back on a regular basis. Last note: If you are wanting your food to have that signature Thai spiciness, you will need to ask for it as what you order will most likely come with the least amount of spiciness by default.

Yelp
This is hands-down, my favorite Thai restaurant in Mobile. Very clean establishment. The food is fresh and balanced. The service is fantastic. Staff is extremely attentive. It's my go to spot. Best eggrolls around. Cooked to perfection. And the sauce is delish. I would recommend.

Elizabeth a.

Yelp
Was very good! All food was hot and plentiful! The pad Thai was absolute delicious! Bonus points for being open on Christmas Eve

Yelp
Great food served up by a wonderfully smiling and friendly staff. My family and I have dined at this fine establishment numerous times, and I can say with full sincerity, that we have never had a bad meal, or thoroughly enjoyed experience. It's a small venue, so I hesitate a big to send this recommendation, for fear that they will become too well known, thus making them a difficult restaurant to get into. But, they deserve the recognition, and seem capable enough to persevere with the challenge of notoriety.
google avatar

Joyce A.

Yelp
Service and food are excellent.I've been here over 12 times and I've never had a bad meal. my favorite is Massaman curry. you can order it ith more heatbut beware, it is hot. Forgive the typos.I'm not able to go back and edit for some reason without erasing the whole sentence.

Yelp
Led here by Yelp heading home from vacation. Such a fantastic local Thai restaurant with great service. All staff wore masks, the tables were spotless, and the bathrooms were clean. You must, MUST get the coconut soup. As is or with veggies, chicken, or shrimp, it is hands down the best Thai coconut soup I've ever eaten. The Spring rolls were hot & tasty. For dinner: King Prik with chicken, Karee Curry with chicken, both with white rice and Pad Woon Sen with pork The portions were great! The prices were fantastic, and the ingredients were high quality. I can not wait for next Summer to again have this wonderful food.

Melanie F.

Yelp
Just the Best! Authentic to order, delightful Thai. Best in Mobile. Quick, cordial service. Extremely reasonable prices. Ample portions. Comfortable & clean. Neighborhood shopping center parking. Arrive early, limited seating. One large group center, several large booths & a sushi type bar for singles.Thai offers the variety & healthier food choice.

Terry W.

Yelp
The food and presentation was exceptional. Wait staff very friendly and knowledgeable. We will return soon.

Colten T.

Yelp
Ordered chicken pad thai and crab ragoons for takeout. It was ready when they said but when I got home I realized they forgot my crab ragooons. I called them and asked for a refund for just the ragoons and they said I had to come back to the restaurant immediately for a cash refund, and I couldn't because I was working. I asked them to just hold the cash for me or give me a credit for the ragoons and they said that it wasn't possible. I guess having a sticky note attached to cash and customers name is too hard. Anyways the pad thai was okay but they just refused to work with me on a refund.

Yelp
Came in for a quick bite to one of my favorites. The Thai Diner a small intimate little restaurant that seats about40-50 but due to COVID-19 restrictions holds about half. Waitress was not as attentive as usual, but the food was hot fresh and delicious as all my other visits. My hubby and I ordered the house fried rice no chicken, tom yum soup, and veggie delight stir fry. It's always enough for two people so we decided to shared and as always was stuffed. Always filling and not to heavy

Yelp
Fresh food, we liked everything, the portion sizes were pretty small, Service was good. I would recommend this location for lunch or dinner and I will be returning.

Yelp
Review on Lunch Menu: There is a wide selection of food for a lunch special -- from noodles to salads, you name it. We had duck curry, Basil Rolls, Pad Thai, shrimp fried rice, crunchy chicken, and chicken and beef teriyaki. We all liked the food. I would also recommend the ginger salad and the coconut soup, they're good! The prices are very affordable. A Pad Thai with a side is only $7.95. My family and I ordered 6 entrees with 2 drinks and 2 appetizers and we just paid $96. The portions were not bad for a lunch special. Review on COVID-19 measures: The place is not too spacious. There were booths all around the restaurant and 2 tables in the middle. They reserved the middle tables for social distancing which is a good move. Our server was wearing a mask the whole time we were there. I did not feel bothered with the virus while I was here. Overall, we had a good dining experience. Our server was very attentive and she took care of us well. I personally just did not find anything special about it but it's definitely worth trying!

Yelp
Thai Diner is absolutely delicious. I LOVE going here for lunch. The quality is excellent, people are friendly and service is timely. My Crunchy Chicken lunch plate w/white rice (see pic) was perfect. Tempura chicken, cooked & crisp red and green bell pepper, cashews. Also had the spring rolls appetizer. Oh and the coconut soup was DIVINE! I ate it to quick to pic LOL

Katie P.

Yelp
favorite Thai in Mobile. Reasonably priced, fast service. We enjoy spicy food, but get our Curry "hot" here. "Thai hot" truly has a kick to it.
google avatar

Joshua L.

Yelp
The AC temp is on FREEZE. The food took over 30 mins after ordering (not full store). Party of 4; ALL orders were wrong. Spice levels were all mixed up for each order. Fried rice is bland lacking all taste Pad Thai is mushy No table spices. A total let down.

Yelp
This little gem is tucked away in a nice strip mall, so it's easy to miss. I ducked in for a quick lunch and thoroughly enjoyed my basil summer rolls and pork larb. Excellent flavor, quick service, friendly staff. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Maria E.

Yelp
This little hidden gem has delicious food, and the wait staff are great. I am hooked on their Masamen Curry Chicken and it doesn't disappoint. No matter how many times I go it tastes fresh. Prices are middle of the road and worth it if it tastes better than you can make. Give this a try. I make a point of stopping in when I go to the PetSuppliesPlus store in the same shopping strip there.
google avatar

Caleb C.

Yelp
The best Thai around for sure! Everything is fresh and prices are reasonable. Highly Recommend Apps: spring rolls and Tom kha (coconut soup) Entrees: anything on the menu... especially curry or stir fry Been to this restaurant more than 30 times and it's consistently the best

Yelp
We had a great experience at this Thai restaurant. Conveniently located on Hillcrest Road, this restaurant is tucked into a strip mall. We were sad to find out that they no longer serve sushi, but we found a couple of great options for dinner instead. We opted for the fried squid appetizer which wasn't chewy at all and very tasty. It came with a delicious dipping sauce. For our entrée we shared an order of shrimp fried rice. We also ordered a pot of jasmine tea which was very light and really nice. I can't wait to go back to this Thai Restaurant for some more delicious food. Also located in this strip mall are a barbershop, hair salon, and an Asian massage place (that I would love to try.) After dinner we walked to Krispy Kreme for a doughnut!

Yelp
I go to Thai Diner for the coconut soup. Their version is a perfect blend of flavors without being overly sweet. If you get the coconut soup as a side to your entree it comes with just mushrooms and chives. I prefer to order the veggie version that you get separately. It comes with big chunks of vegetables and could be a meal in itself. My other go-to dish here is the pad see ew. It's usually pretty good, and you get a lot so there is plenty if you like leftovers or sharing. One thing that I had never tried before until my most recent visit was the spicy catfish. The catfish was cooked perfectly, but I didn't love the sauce. It was pretty heavy and not very spicy at all. I would order more spice next time because I had it with just the "regular amount of spice." All in all, not a bad place. It's quick and the servers are friendly. No major complaints.

Yelp
Stumbled across this gem today. I town working everyone else is Mardi Gras'ing around. I had the coconut soup, spring roll and the Thai Spaghetti! It was fabulous. It is a little hidden down in west Mobile but definitely worth the traffic down airport.
google avatar

Juliet H.

Yelp
Thai Diner is pretty good and a top contender for favorite Thai spot in Mobile (close, but not the winner). As a newbie in town this was one of the first Thai restaurants I tried and enjoyed. Thai Diner makes a great Pad Thai,Thai tea, and the service is good also! I can't rant and rave, but I'd definitely say it's a solid option for a Thai fix.

Michelle P.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I've tried it out about 4 times. I've tried the masaman curry, crispy squid, drunken noodles, and Thai tea. The only thing I'd come back here is for their drunken noodles (spicy level: hot) and Thai tea. I ordered the crispy squid because the previous reviewer's picture looked amazing. It seems like they've changed their recipe. The squid was extremely chewy and not edible. I kindly asked for it to be remade and they agreed. Unfortunately it wasn't much better. The girl cashier here is very nice and provides good service. However, the boy is very soft spoken and doesn't seem to know the menu well. I found it difficult to order because I couldn't hear him well. He might've been new because it took him a while to count my money and give me change. I'm not sure he knew what to do.
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
I had the Pad See Ew and my husband had the spicy catfish. We both enjoyed our food. I liked the sauce of my dish and had it at medium spice. My husband had the thai hot spice and liked it very much. Good prices, clean restaurant and prompt service.
google avatar

Wes D.

Yelp
I was randomly in this part of town and I'm always game to try a new Thai food place! The Thai Diner didn't disappoint! I came in the door at 4 and by 4:05 I had food in front of me - wonderful! I ordered the Massaman Curry with a Thai tea and it was delicious! Great portion size with plenty of soup to pour over the rice! Really well flavored - I'll be back!
google avatar

Ivy C.

Yelp
Service was very slow, my dish spicy garlic chicken came out warm not hot and not the spiciness I asked for. My husband dish Pad Thai was too spicy and mushy not what he asked for. My sons Pad Thai was to sweet and not spicy. My daughter's Pad Thai was cold and too spicy. The fried rice was bland I was hoping this place would hot the mark as it was recommended to us.
google avatar

Yelp
Went yesterday since on Mondays many restaurants are closed. I was one of the first to rate this place, andgood! But they struggled yesterday. they no longer serve two choices of roll, soup or salad, just one.my lunch was not good. The coconut soup was not hot, and way too salty.I asked for no green bell pepper only red. My main catfish dish came out oily, salty and with only onions...it sorta sucked. Maybe they should close also on Mondays. The chef was off his game, and servers seem confused a lot. Poor quality for a $35 lunch for two IMO.
google avatar

Jimmy H.

Yelp
By far the most consistent and wonderfully delicious Thai food I've ever come across. The food is always perfectly hot and served in a timely fashion. The panang curry is phenomenal! I highly recommend.
google avatar

Ronald W.

Yelp
Thai Diner is truly a hidden treasure in West Mobile! With the Asian restaurant scene growing here, there are many options to choose from. However, if you really want an authentic experience, you have to taste Thai Diner! The shrimp fried rice was very well put together. A simple, yet delicious dish indeed. The portions were very satisfying as well. The spicy basil chicken and beef was amazing as well. If you like Thai, then you must give this restaurant a try!
google avatar

Khoi N.

Yelp
Ordered the chicken satay and house fried rice and the quality is phenomenal. Ordered to go and was a short waiting period with the friendliest of staffs. Definitely will return to try the pad Thai next time!
google avatar

Brit S.

Yelp
Unfortunately they are not serving sushi until further notice. Everything we ordered was delicious! Will go again. Get the coconut soup with your entree.
google avatar

Libby R.

Yelp
Hands down one of my favorite Thai restaurants around the Mobile/Baldwin county area. It's very small and quaint, but that's one of the many things I love about it. The servers are always extremely nice and make sure you have everything you need, you get a lot of food for your money, and it's very clean. The food has been spot on every single time we've been and we've been a lot!!!! I would also recommend trying the Thai tea, it's delicious.
google avatar

j d.

Yelp
Very good Thai food here, love this place. Very authentic. SOLID, just like another place I have recommended.

Adam P.

Yelp
My wife & I wanted to give this place a try for dinner. It was around 7pm. Although, the food was good the portions were terribly small. There's an up charge for beef entrees. I knowingly ordered anyways. Sadly, there was maybe 5 tiny slivers included in my vegetables.
google avatar

Glenn B.

Yelp
Ordered pad kee mow extra vegetables to go. I was greeted with a smile and fast service. They had the order ready as soon as I walked in the door. Generous portions and great flavor. It was spicy but I maybe should've asked for a little more spicy which is not their fault.
google avatar

Terri L.

Yelp
Love this restaurant, the Massimo on curry is delicious! Food is very authentic and fresh always. Service is great!
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
Thai Diner has executed their lunch menu with perfection! Between the swiftness of the staff and the cleanliness of the restaurant I was thoroughly pleased with my dine in experience. Let me not forget, the food was exceptionally prepared with the proper blend of spice. Overall, great experience. I'll be back.

Alexa M.

Yelp
Great Food and service! We travel over an hour just to come get this food. All our dishes taste great

K B.

Yelp
DELICIOUS, flavorful. Not oily at all. The folks there were very warm, friendly and professional. I'm a huge lover of Thai food, and have had the cuisine of one other restaurant in Mobile- it was disgusting, they were rude. I asked for 2 stars (spice level), and it was serious! So if you have a sensitivity to heat, tread lightly. Do yourself a favor and check em out!

Tony V.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY Delicious food! I'm from out of town and stumbled upon this place. The flavor of the food is spot on, not just overwhelmingly spicy. Some of the best Thai food I have ever eaten. What a pleasant surprise, I highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Each time I have been to this restaurant I have been so pleased with the great food, the kind staff, and the cleanliness of the facility. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Thai food. Be sure and get the crab and angels with the sweet sauce! Another tip: get the Sweet & Sour (Tom Yum) and get it Thai Spicy. It's perfect. I've tried every Thai restaurant in the region...this is the best!

Sandy O.

Yelp
Great food and service. Lunch prices are affordable and fulfilling! One of the best thai restaurants in mobile!
google avatar

Lara G.

Yelp
First time dining in here. Cute small place but the food was terrific. We had the fried Spring rolls and they were very hot and flavorful. I had the Pad Thai and its the best I have had ever so far. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
I had the Basil rolls to start and they tasted very fresh with a perfect peanut sauce to dip them in. The masaman curry was spicy but mild with the coconut milk cooling down your mouth. I will be back to try other curry items on the menu. The dining room is not large and fills up quickly but if you have to wait a few minutes it will be worth your time. Their service as quick and made for a very pleasant experience.
