Order Up to Ever After: How Five Austin Restaurant Couples Fell in Love | Eater Austin

"Originating from small-scale beginnings—teaching cooking classes out of her kitchen (with their son in a playpen) and selling Thai curry at a farmer’s market on weekends—this business spun off into a full-fledged restaurant that the couple has owned and operated for 17 years. Over time they’ve shifted more responsibility to staff (he now works a 40-hour week instead of 60+), and she is expanding her cooking classes into a standalone cooking school. They acknowledge inevitable disagreements but stress the importance of a solid foundation: “Once you get into the business, there’s so many things that could go wrong, and that could ruin a relationship,” Jam says. “If you don’t start with a good foundation, that’s where things [go wrong].”" - Lane Gillespie

Tiny place with a HUGE flavor. We tried the eggplant stir fry with shrimp and we got a colorful and delicious dish. The green curry was also delicious and the Tom Yum soup very flavorful. I can’t wait to try other dishes. Everything is packed to go, but we could not wait and ate on their tiny deck outside and enjoyed the Thai iced coffee as well. It is strong and sweet. Try it.

Google
**photos added!** Hands down the best pad thai I've ever had. I like to think of myself as a regular here and I don't go anywhere else for Thai food. The workers treat me so well, and they know my order and modifications. Although I don't know his name, the Asian man with glasses is the sweetest person ever. He knows my voice as soon as I say I want to place an order over the phone. It's a tiny place with a couple of tables off to the side outside. The inside looks clean and tidy. And the food is so good!!

Demian Ortega

Google
Ordered two pad thai’s, 1 chicken not spicy and 1 shrimp spicy. They gave me both shrimp and neither one was spicy lmao. Ive been coming for years and the food is pretty good but, no joke, this was the driest shrimp I’ve ever had in my life. For ~$15 bucks a plate you would expect fresher ingredients🤷‍♂️

Google
We love coming to Thai Fresh for yummy Thai in Chula Vista. It's a hole in the wall with a table or two to dine outside, we usually order to go. The food is fresh and full of flavor, portions are good and the prices are great. Evenings can be a bit busy, try to call in your order to minimize the wait. We frequently order Panang tofu, chicken larb salad, crab fried rice, pad sew w/tofu ... Everything is wonderful!

Google
It is a hole in the wall restaurant! The mom and pop place is always the best place to eat at! The food is amazing! Home cooked and everything! Very affordable! Awesomeness!!

Yelp
A little disappointed, especially given the good reviews. This place is definitely takeout-only, as I didn't see any seating available to enjoy a meal. I ordered Pad Thai, spring rolls, and Tom Kha soup (not Tom Yum). I love Thai food and know the difference between the two soups. I'm not a big fan of Tom Yum since it's too sour for my taste, but I love the rich, coconut milk flavor of Tom Kha. Unfortunately, they got my order wrong and gave me Tom Yum instead, which was a bummer. Kha and Yum don't even sound the same. As for the spring rolls, they forgot my peanut sauce, so I had nothing to dip them in--another letdown. And no chopsticks? What kind of Asian food place doesn't have chopsticks? I asked for utensils, but they only had forks and spoons. I prefer eating noodles with chopsticks, so that was disappointing as well. The Pad Thai noodles were okay, but I've had better. Considering there are better Thai food options in San Diego, I gave this place a generous 3 stars. Overall, the food was average. I debated giving it 2 stars, mainly because they messed up my order and forgot the peanut sauce, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and a chance to correct their mistakes, so I settled on an average rating. If you decide to try this place, I'd recommend double-checking your order before leaving. It's hard to find good Thai food in South San Diego. All the good Thai food is up north in the Hillcrest/North Park area, like Bahn Thai, Taste of Thai, White Elephant, Veganic Thai Cafe, or Plumeria. You won't be disappointed in these places if you love Thai food. Sometimes you have to stick to what you know!

Yelp
On this chilly Oct day I was craving Thai food. So I searched for what was closest to me and this place was it. Although they had none of what I had in mind to order. I decided I was still going try it out and order something. That something was Tom Yum soup with chicken and pad-see-ew noodles with beef. I asked for extra broccoli in the noodles too. I came to pick up my food and discovered it's take out only. Which is what I was doing anyway so I thought how perfect. I got home and was surprised at the big portion of noodles. The soup I'm not sure of the size I received because I ordered a small but they charged me for a large. Which I didn't realize till I had already left. So I have no idea if what I got was the small or their large size. ok back to the food, it was absolutely delicious!!!! My plan was to have leftovers for tmrw but that almost didn't happen! The soup was delicious and had so much flavor, the lemongrass and all the veggies except for the tomato lol does Tom Yum usually have tomato? Idk but it was good despite the tomato. But definitely order the noodles, even though I prefer the broccolini which pad-see-ew is usually made with I didn't mind the regular broccoli, it also had a lot of beef and the portion was huge and ohhh sooo much flavor, I will be ordering that again!

Alfredo B.

Yelp
The best pad Thai in East Chula Vista. The service is fast and the owner is very nice. I had the pad Thai with tofu and the combination of flavors was excellent. The pasta was well done, the ground peanuts and lemon gave it a great flavor contrast I totally recommend this local business
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Still highly recommend this place! Maybe it's just my memory but the portion size seemed larger this time :)
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
The food is quite delicious! The staff is also quite nice and helpful. They made a mistake on our dish and they let us just keep it! What?? We love panang curry and pad see ew so we got one of each no spice and mild. Even "no spice" was spicy so the kids had a LOT of rice with it. Just beware there's no air conditioning!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cute little shop in a shopping plaza right across Costco. I ordered their Thai tea and a small Tom yum soup with shrimp. It was about 13 bucks so not bad. The soup came with three shrimps so if you want extra just ask. You do have to ask for condiments even when ordering online they won't automatically give it to you. They have two patio tables outside where you can eat with shade. I visited on a Tuesday afternoon even tho yelp said it was closed. So I'd call and verify.

Yelp
I love their pad Thai, call ahead and pick up your food. I like to support these hard working ladies business
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
Both the owners and workers are very kind and always have a great attitude. The food is a huge hit, no matter what you pick. The wait times are not bad at all and usually they keep you posted on when your turn is next. I started eating here during the peak of the pandemic and the service and food is what has brought me back again and again all these years. A true hidden gem.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Me and my wife always love eating here. Always love eating the Pad Thai and Pad see ew.
google avatar

K C.

Yelp
The food is always fresh and very flavorful. There is nothing to report if ambiance as it is pick up only with no option to dine in. You pick up your food at the door which is the entrance to the kitchen. Great spot for take out.
google avatar

ANGELINA T.

Yelp
Forgot to take pictures but I ordered the Wonton soup it was good. And also ordered the Sticky rice with Mango. Very delicious. The ladies that work there are very nice , it was my first time trying, I will definitely be coming back to try something different.

Sharon S.

Yelp
The papaya salad is acceptable. The noodles are salty and it took 1 hr for the food to be ready.

Yelp
BEST THAI TEA IN THE BUSINESS. I only come here for my Thai Tea and I don't live in the area. Love these guys

Robin R.

Yelp
Take out (or eat in parking lot) only. Shrimp spring rolls are nothing but shredded cabbage with some paper thin shrimp. O stars. Tofu pad thai was sticky and had too much tomato -near a spaghetti vibe. Zero stars. The yellow curry was tasty but much thinner than expected. 4 stars. They also forgot our rice. With so many thai restaurants nearby, i would not recommend.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! I've had it a few years ago, so when we ordered takeout I was hoping the quality was the same. I honestly think it was better than I remembered. I ordered the pad Thai with chicken and made it spicy along with beef fried rice. Everything was exactly how I expect both dishes to taste and you can tell the quality of ingredients is top notch. I have to note also my delivery driver got lost, so my food wasn't fresh out of the store and it was still delicious. We'll definitely be placing more orders in the future.
google avatar

Pamela D.

Yelp
Worst pad Thai I've ever had. They used to be good. We got a bad batch that was all tomato flavor. Will never go back. Pad see ew was ok but if you can't get pad Thai right, no respect.
google avatar

Iris B.

Yelp
Food is very good, call ahead or you will have along wait. There is no place to sit and eat.
google avatar

Monique W.

Yelp
I have been a fan of this place for about 10yrs (back in my Southwestern College Days) no seating...don't care. Walk up and order...only pick up Togo, PERFECT! Always fresh and hot! Sweet Basil Chicken and green curry or pad see ew ALL DELICIOUS!
google avatar

Aphrodaisy L.

Yelp
I have no complaints about the food that comes out of this kitchen (except the fresh rolls are a bit on the bland side). The portions are good and everything tastes delicious. My only issue is the prices are VERY HIGH now. I get that inflation is raising prices across the board but you would think that a hole in the wall that has no dine-in service would have lower operational costs and perhaps those lower costs would be passed onto the patrons? Prices are what I would expect at Gaslamp District. But the dining experience is thatof an alley food truck at best. (A very tasty food truck) Would I eat here again? Probably. But this has now dropped down to #5 out of 5 places I would regularly order from.

Elsa C.

Yelp
Ordered take out and no utensils nor napkin was included ... food was ok that's why I'm leaving 3 stars

Thomas T.

Yelp
Our first visit to blackbear did not disappoint. Attractive, pleasant and Homie atmosphere.. food was tasty with ample portions. Only negative was the hashbrowns were slightly undercooked.. But the highlight had to be the blackberry pie. Worth a visit just for this treat.
google avatar

Juzenne C.

Yelp
Probably the best food to get in this area tbh. Their food is delicious as always but I will say the spice level differs from who is cooking. I love spicy, so I don't mind but I notice when I order medium spicy it's different almost each time. If you can't handle spicy ask for mild alllll the time regardless if you want a little bit. The service is great too!! I call in and it's super convenient.

Jordan M.

Yelp
On the positive, friendly staff and large portions, but this is not really Thai, and it is not really fresh. The crab Pad Thai tasted like ketchup and the crab was from a can. It's takeout only, with only a few places to sit outside.

Amador E.

Yelp
Great food! Outdoor dining is limited, so better to order and go. Like the green and yellow curry soups with chicken. Tofu spring rolls are fresh. Ordering will take a bit longer than other places, but certainly worth the wait. Recommend calling in order ahead of time. Fresh. Tasty. Authentic.
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
Nice little spot for a quick bite. I really like the idea behind this being a "brick & mortar" that only does takeout. Very simple and easy for a quick, on-the-go meal. With that said, they do have some tables and seating outside. Very small space and small tables so don't bring the family. The food was delicious. I ordered fresh rolls with tofu, chicken panang curry, and Thai iced tea with boba. The fresh rolls are monstrous! Absolute massive! Two are plenty and packed such great flavor. They are served with peanut sauce and a type of plum sauce I believe... it's like sweet n sour but has a little bite to it. Really tasty. The chicken panang curry was wonderful. Really nice and simple with carrots and broccoli. She did not ask if I wanted it spicy but it had a little Thai chili bite to it. Not much but enough to compliment the flavors well. Nice, rich flavor of curry and coconut milk that really hit my tastebuds well. And lastly, the Thai tea... very good and large sized boba. Perfect blend of tea with milk and sweetness. Overall really good experience here. I would check this place out if you're in the mood for solid Thai food.

Yelp
Best Thai food places. Always has the food ready to go. When ordering online be advise food might be ready before the timer states it is. So just walk in and ask for the status. ( pick up option) As per usual I get the drunken noodle with mild spice and with pork. Always done to perfection.

Kath K.

Yelp
Thai is one of may favorite comfort food so I make sure I try very thai restaurant near me. Unfortunately this one didn't meet my expectation. The flavor of the tom yum soup fall short. The pad thai is not anywhere near any of the pad thai I've tasted. Fortunately, the thai ice tea was the only order I enjoyed.

Alvin M.

Yelp
Great food great service. Very easy to pull in to pick up your food. I tried their pad Thai with beef and it was very delicious! Will definitely be back. 10/10
google avatar

Karla G.

Yelp
First time trying this place. I had heard it was good and it was delicious!! The shrimp spring roll was huge but I don't think I tasted much shrimp. The Pad Thai with chicken was amazing! I also ordered the Green Curry with chicken and although very little chicken was given, it was very tasty! Sorry no photos because we were starving and it definitely hit the spot!

Katie S.

Yelp
Great food. I had it delivered and wasn't disappointed!!!!!' Yada yada yada, I have to put a bunch of nonsense words for this to be long enough for yelp!!
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Take-out and delivery are only available from this Thai restaurant and it was worth the time to put in an order and drive to the place. My chicken pad Thai was tasty, nice a hot -temperature-wise and with plenty of peanuts, bean sprouts and chicken, yet they were a bit over-cooked. Order was placed with pick-up time and it was ready!
google avatar

Yuleni D.

Yelp
For the price I pay, I expect to get what I ordered. Very often here they mess up my order and only replaced it once. They're trying to pass off "pumpkin" as zucchini. They say the measure the pumpkin, that's BS. Customer service sucks! If you wanna roll the dice and see what you get, then this is definitely your go to place. F em!
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Best Thai food in the South Bay hands down! A great little mom & pop hole in the wall type shop! Literally hole in the wall right next to Rubios. Been coming here for years & the food is always fresh, good & very affordable. Customer service is ok, they seem a bit series & the food can take a bit but that's why you order ahead of time & it's always fresh & good. Probably the best fried rice I've ever had. My kids love their chicken with fried rice, they won't even share it with me those ungrateful kids :( As for me I love their Pad Thai chicken level 5 on spice, it's on point! Dude it's so good I lick the box clean like a dog, no shame or lie, my wife thinks I'm gross but I don't care it's that good. I also get the Drunken Noodles & also very good with a great spice to it. It's my go to Thai food place, so support your local small businesses & give this place a try, trust, you'll love it! Thai Fresh keep on keeping it fresh baby, we'll see you soon!

Dulce R.

Yelp
I have been trying to support local businesses especially during these times. However I was very disappointed in the quality of food I received today. This was the 1st time at this location. I will admit The customer service is definitely a 5, very friendly And accommodating that is why I am giving them a 2... versus a 1... They are very cleanly in terms of wearing gloves and masks And requiring their customers to wear masks as well and stay outside of the door. I ordered the tofu yellow curry with broccoli instead of potatoes and red rice. I only received white rice even though I paid extra. And I live too far to go back and exchange. I was not asked the spiciness for the curry I am guessing they only had one level, but the flavour while it wasn't bad was not what I am used to from other Thai restaurants. The tofu was plan no flavor, the broccoli was overcooked and the onions and carrots were cooked fine. The one time soup had flavour, the wontons were not edible As shown in the pictures and the chicken (i believe!?) Was jerky dry with no flavor as shown in the pictures. Was in the area and decided to try this place, unfortunately I will not be back and I hope I do not have food poisoning as this review is written right after getting the food. Was looking forward to soup since it rained today. Could not eat this.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
Absolutely one of my favorites and my go-to Thai place. I always order pad Thai, but my mom has tried the crab fried rice and calls it outstanding. My mom is very hard to please too. She also says the wonton soup is fantastic and also enjoys the pad Thai. I don't have any pictures, I'm sorry, but I have tried other places that don't compare. Also, their Thai iced coffee? Delicious. I always get it with boba.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
I love their rolls and sandwiches! Every time it's bene a great experience always fresh and delicious
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
Placed an order on Postmates because I'm lazy and too hungry to drive... Food delivered but no napkins, no fork, no spoon! What am I supposed to eat it with ?? My hands ? Is this a tradition thai restaurant where you eat with your hands on a banana leaf ? Now we're on a mission to find utensils! ARGGG! Ps. We're at WORK and not at home so I wouldn't be this annoyed.
google avatar

Serena G.

Yelp
This is a little shop around the corner place to go I love it and I have been coming to this restaurant ever since it opened it good place nice people good food
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
We ordered a dish my daughter really wanted to a noodle dish from here and it was great! I suggest ordering ahead of time. This place is very delicious and authentic for Thai food!

Melissa M.

Yelp
watery curry. Complained then went back from my home, waited another 15 minutes for them to remake it and got the second one even worse.
google avatar

Heci L.

Yelp
Happily surprised to see a Thai restaurant where the curry actually comes with rice!! Restaurant is an order over the phone or at the door and take to go type of place. No seating inside. It takes around 10-15 minutes from the time you place your order for your food to be ready. It's located on a small hilltop plaza that you can walk around while you wait. Prices are moderate, $7 for 2 thick spring rolls and $12 for an entree. Food: -shrimp spring rolls: 3 small shrimps with lots of cabbage, some vermicelli noodle, light lettuce, and a smidfe of herbs. Even though I felt cheated, I have to admit it was pretty tasty paired with the peanut sauce and they did stuff it more than the average restaurant does. -smoked salmon spring roll: Did not care one bit for the smoked salmon spring roll. Did not match well with either the peanut or sweet chili sauce. Wasn't able to cut the smoked salmon with my teeth so led to awkward sharing/eating. -pad Thai- twas okay, not amazing. Still in the fridge, unfinished. Happy they were willing to put the egg on the side for us! - pad see ew: this was the first dish that was annihilated upon opening. Love that it has the wok flavor, some vegetables, and that it's not too sweet. They were not able to accommodate our request to put the egg on the side for this dish but that just means more for me! -green curry: great ratio of curry to filling, a little more watery than I'm used to but that just means more flavoring for the rice that the entree actually comes with! This was the second dish to be annihilated.

Yelp
Ummmmmmmm...WHY haven't I been here SOONER?! The customer service is great...the food quality and presentation was much better than I expected. I've been to Thailand...this food is the REAL DEAL. Reasonably priced, since the portions are large. I'll DEFINITELY be back!
google avatar

Pj M.

Yelp
Excellent food! They have it all ready very quickly and pay close attention to the level of heat preferred. Deliveries have been great!
google avatar

Jiwon K.

Yelp
I love that there's a good Thai place close to my house!! I've been here a few times when I was really craving Thai food but didn't feel like driving too far. I've tried their pad see ew, drunken noodles, red curry, Tom yum soup, and papaya salad. All have been really good, although their food can taste a bit too salty sometimes for my liking. Their portions are pretty big as well and I can usually get two meals out of one dish. It's across the street from the Costco and in the same plaza as pep boys. This spot is more like a takeout only place so I always just call in and then come to pick up my order. They do have one or two tables outside if you want to eat there, but no seating inside.
google avatar

Venice V.

Yelp
I have been a big supporter to this hole in a wall for about FOUR YEARS. My usual order has been the drunken noodles or pad thai- always been delicious meals! But within the last year, the chefs have been neglectful to my request when I order WITHOUT PEANUTS (I am severely allergic). I didn't want one mistake or allergic reaction to reflect the restaurant so I gave a few more chances. Still given benefit of the doubt, my food always had peanuts when I specifically ordered NO PEANUTS. One time, I double checked at the register asking them if my order had no peanuts. They took it to the kitchen and walked back at the front handing my order. It seemed like they just hand picked out the peanuts- UNBELIEVABLE?? This "mistake" has made me sick FOUR TIMES now. I'm no longer a loyal customer to this disloyal service.

Verna D.

Yelp
We always order our favorite Crab Fried Rice here from Thai Fresh 1; but lately, during the last few orders, we noticed something has changed. The taste was not the same as it use to before. Today, I ordered our favorite Crab Fried Rice, but I am so disappointed. Not only that the price went up, but I couldn't taste the crab anymore and couldn't find that much crab. There's more eggs than the crabs. I think it should no longer be called Crab Fried Rice, instead it should be called Egg(s) Fried Rice w/ Crab!! I don't mind paying more, but I expect that it would be at least the same quality as before. I can understand that the price went up, but the quality should not go down! I hope the owners or management will pay attention to this post, before you lose all your customers. Just concerned, --Verna

Sandra P.

Yelp
The beef pad Thai was off the mutha chain!!!! I had mocos and ish from the spices . The place is small and cute. The people are nice. I would go back but I'll bring puffs for my nose and they ask how hot you want it. Don't say a 10 or else imma pass by and call you a mocoso/ a while you're eating this bomb food.
google avatar

Priscilla O.

Yelp
Delicious! Our go to Thai spot in the area. We get the yellow curry with chicken spicy level 7, pad Thai with chicken spicy level 7, fresh rolls, and tom kha with veggies.. also spicy level 7. This place is the best. Way better than Thai Fresh 2 *chef's kiss*

Yelp
Wow! I was blown away by my lunch today. As soon as you walk in, you will notice it is a very humble and "mom n pop" kinda establishment. Well, don't let the exterior fool you because they serve up some grand, magnificent flavors! I ordered a veggie pad Thai level 6 spicy ($8.95) and a taro milk tea ($3). That first bite was heavenly. It was an explosion of flavors and a joy to my palate. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente, the sauce to noodle ratio was perfect, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The art of cooking pad Thai is very challenging, but this place has mastered it! Wash this down with a delightful taro milk tea- it was one of the best taro milk teas I've had! Not the fake, powdery, artificial tasting kind, but perfectly sweet and smooth. I would highly recommend trying this place if you're craving Thai food! The staff is super polite and nice and gets your order to you in a timely manner. Parking is free and plenty! P.s their passion fruit iced tea is super refreshing and my favorite!
