16 Great Black-Owned Restaurants In New Orleans 2024

"This is one of our favorite spots in New Orleans East—it’s a real spot for locals, where you can always expect super-friendly service and muted videos of Thailand playing on the TVs. Go for the fish sauce-packed noodles that come with boiled shrimp, rich with galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir leaves. They also have one of the top Thai teas we’ve ever tried, using green leaf instead of black." - megan braden perry

Google
Really amazing. First you can have spice level 0, and spice on the side. That's important, because it's proper spicy, my whole family doesn't regularly do spicy. Also, the portions are more like family style so keep that in mind for ordering, and consider sharing. We got the pineapple rice, pad see ew (since my old lady always searches for that), pad ga pow, crab ramen gumbo, and some apps. The owner recommended the pad ga pow and was right. The noodle soup was solid. The pineapple rice was too spicy for my kid in the end and his brother wouldn't share the pad ga pow, even though he said he was fine we ordered an app of coconut shrimp which came right away. And I took the rice in a heating tin for later. We drank a lot of water, first it was a long day in the heat, mainly it was spicier than expected. But like the server just kept refilling the glasses, hell of fast. It wasn't too spicy to not finish everything, well except the pineapple rice! Honestly, I'd love to be near enough to come back.

Google
Food is flavorful but the ingredients are not as fresh as I would have liked. Prices are a little on the high side given that. The fried calamari was really pretty bad but the soup is good. I will come back and revise my review after another visit.

Google
Food is 🔥🔥🔥 Full of flavor and spice! Portions were large. We tried the pork ramen, basil fried rice, fried wings, pork skins, and dumplings. Everything was a 10! Their staff was so nice and welcoming! The kindness and hospitality felt like dining at someone's home. Loved the atmosphere as well. Nice soulful music playing, people enjoying themselves, but not a party if that makes sense. Just a real chill vibe. We will certainly be back! There's like at least 20 more things we want to try haha

Google
We had Gumbo Ramen. Just amazing. A large amount of food. The broth has a nice smokey flavor to it. We also had the chicken wings, they were cooked perfectly as well. Will definitely come back and try other stuff on the menu. I'm interested in the Thai Nola Boat Noodle.

Google
Solid Thai food w/ large portions @ reasonable prices. In addition, vegan/vegetarian versions of almost everything are available in addition to non Thai daily specials. The staff is extremely friendly and the vast majority of patrons appear to be regulars. However, the staff can get overwhelmed when busy and the food took awhile to come out. I do really enjoy this place and want it to enjoy long term success as New Orleans East has always been lacking in Asian fare outside of the usual Chinese-American & Vietnamese spots.

Google
Best I’ve EVER had! Family environment and owned. They don’t bring you a check only because they don’t want you to feel rushed. We stayed and conversed with the online family for a long time after our meal was done. Food is fresh and AMAZING!!! In high demand so if you don’t have the time to wait, call it in! You will not be disappointed!

Belinda Jean

Google
First-time customer and I ordered the Pad Ga Pow over Jasmine Rice, the Fried Fish and Shrimp with fries plate and 2 orders of the Fried Rice Thai Style. Gerald was very welcoming and explained what each dish included. Will have to try the gumbo at my next visit.

Google
Thai Nola is so delicious!! We had the crab rangoons, spring rolls, Pad woon sen (F2), and the combination fried rice with chicken and shrimp. Everything was hot, fresh, and all had amazing flavor! Service was great also!

Joshua B.

Yelp
Very authentic Thai food! Great vibes in there as well. I love their Pad See Ew so if you're into Lo Mein, I recommend that

Yelp
Thai Nola is a whole vibe. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted right away and taken to your table, which sets the tone for a great experience. The ambience is amazing, very quiet but lively at the same time. The staff is super friendly and really attentive, which I appreciated. The portions are huge, so you're definitely getting your money's worth. I had the garlic stir-fry and shrimp in a blanket, and everything was just so good. I don't have a of the shrimp but trust me, the flavors were there, and I had enough to bring home. Also, this is a great spot for groups. You could fit about 10 people in there comfortably without it feeling tight. I truly enjoyed everything about it and will definitely be back!

Yelp
OMG, where do I begin. First thing the portion sizes are huge. I had the basil fried rice with added shrimp. It was very good but definitely could not eat all in one setting. Here's a tip if you want to eat here, please come starving. The portion size will alone with take care of your hunger. The customer service was excellent. The gentleman was efficient and professional. I tried the Thai Nola Iced Tea, that one wasn't for me- it was too sweet and creamy for my liking. So I won't be getting that again. But I will definitely return to try more dishes from here when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Good Lawd that was good. I'm in town from California visiting Family. My Sister told me that Thai NOLA had some of the best Tai food she has had even in California. Challenge accepted. I have to say that was very good. In fact absolutely some of the best I've ever had, even in California. I started slow this visit with the Pad Thai. My thinking was that if they can't cook Pad Thai nothing else would make sense. I got the Combo Pad Thai with Shrimp Beef and Chicken. My goodness, that was good. I can't wait to try the Oxtail Special before I head back to California. When I find a good Restaurant I have a habit of going back the next day if possible. It's possible. Lol! I had a chance to meet the Owner, Gerald who is a great guy. I Love how their daughter is there working after school. Teach them young. The Restaurant is a whole Vibe with happy people and the Owner treating everyone like family from what I observed. If in New Orleans, especially New Orleans East stopping by here is a must. Even if you are Downtown it's worth the 20-30 minute trip. Y'allhollaatchaboy! .

Yelp
We loved the chill ambiance and food was DELICIOUS! Let's talk about the amazing customer service! I'll definitely come back!

Yelp
If you know you me you know I love Thai. So happy to have a Thai restaurant in New Orleans East! The food is exceptional and the owner is always personable and going above and beyond to satisfy the customers. The restaurant is small but I've dined in twice and the service was great. The crab fried rice here is delicious and the sauce served with it gives a wonderful spicy addition. The owner recommended E3(pad ga pow) and it was a great recommendation.

Yelp
Amazing! The owners (including the daughter) were super welcoming. The husband greeted us upon arrival. The space is a bit tight but large enough for a standard wheelchair. I started off with the crab rangoons. I INHALED these. LOL. They were piping hot and full of creamy goodness. I am used to crab rangoons being a tad sweeter, but these were still delicious. I had the red curry with spice level 2 for my entree. I am a spice girl, but boy did this pack a punch. I'm glad I went with level 2. LOL. The dish was so rich and flavorful. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely return for this. I also tried the crab fried rice. The portion is enormous and definitely enough for 2-4 people. This was a nice treat as well and packed with a lot of crab. A couple people found the rice a bit overcooked but I thought it was fine (which was odd since I'm a stickler for perfectly cooked rice that errs on the side of firm). Surprisingly, the gumbo was my least favorite. This is the only item I wouldn't get again when I return. The roux was extremely thin and it tasted a bit on the fishy side. Maybe this is the intention though! Overall, I was impressed by Thai NOLA and I definitely think it lives up to the hype!

Yelp
Thai Nola never disappoints! I have patronized them several times and the food, customer service, and ambiance are always consistent and top tier. Just last night a friend and I dined in and we had a great experience. I tried a new dish (the stir fried ramen) that was recommended by the owner and it was as great as he said it was. My friend had the drunken noodles and she loved those as well. The Crab Rangoon and shrimp rolls as appetizers never disappoint. I also always get an order of the Thai style fried rice to go (G1). I also love that the prices are reasonable and you get very large portions so my family eats off of our leftovers through the next day lol. This place is absolutely one of my faves! Pictured are the fried rice & stir fried ramen.

Yelp
Good Food Large Portions The staff is very kind and attentive. I heard this place was recently featured on the local news.

Yelp
Baby, when great taste and portion size get married, you get a satisfied family. We got the Pad Thai, Pad Woo Sen and the Fried Rice and don't have a single complaint. Everything was well seasoned, packed full of flavor and was great blend of NOLA and Thai food. The portion fed three people for dinner, three people for lunch and then my son for dinner the next day. Looking forward to having and restaurant experience.
google avatar

Henry B.

Yelp
Called in the order said 15 mins got there food ready to go! It literally makes no sense the amount of food they give you!! You can eat for days off of one plate. Places like this is why Nola will always be top in food. Who think to merge Thai food with Nola food the flavor was packed in everything every bite and the prices are on point! Definitely going to keep supporting this business. Stop being scared of going to the East ppl nobody is going to mess with you.

Yelp
Very lovely familiar ambiance. Owner was there and was such a nice person. I love the decoration. Food 10/10. I've never tried Thai food before. But I was such a pleasant experience. Definitely coming back. The food portions were also very big. I couldn't finish it.

Yelp
As someone who loves thai food, I was very happy to hear that there was a thai restaurant in my neighborhood. Went here with my Mom and we were both thoroughly impressed! Great location in New Orleans East (Pat Swilling Complex)! The owners and staff were very nice and helpful but most importantly the food was delicious! My Mom had the Pad Thai (thin ice noodles sauteed with egg, bean spouts, green onions, in a sweet and sour tamarind sauce), this dish was very good and the serving size was huge. I had the Pad Ga Pow (Basil stir fry with carrots, green beans, and bell peppers over a bed of rice, and topped with a thai style fried egg). It was so good, will definitely be getting this again. Note Thai food is very spicy, so let them know your tolerance level.

Yelp
I'm in town for my sons graduation and he lives less than a mile away from here. What struck me were the reviews so I stopped by. I ordered Pad see ew and pad Thai. The wait was excruciating long at roughly an hour. The young lady at the register was sweet and explained that her mom was cooking alone. I definitely can sympathize with entrepreneurs juggling the demands of a small business. As a concession, I was offered a free soda. My husband was less patient but why get made a things you cannot control. Once I got back to the house and looked at the food, it looks really good and fresh. It smells aromatic! While it was not what I'm used too, it was not bad. The portions are huge, the veggies are crisp and fresh, but the flavor was lacking slightly. This combined with the wait made it not really worth it.

Yelp
Casual Thai restaurant in a busy New Orleans East strip mall w very friendly staff and large portions @ reasonable prices. The food is solid and it makes me so happy to see a business thrive in this area of the city.
google avatar

Darriane J.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me so I decided to check them out. The service was great! The owner was very nice. The Crab Rangoon was delicious! I need them to make the tiny cup of sauce bigger!! The Pad Woon Sen was delicious! I will definitely be back to try more.

Golden T.

Yelp
Only giving a 4 star rating because I want to come back and dine in for the full experience Ordered at the register. I got the ramen with beef. I'm not sure if it's on the menu I showed her a picture from yelp. I also ordered the shrimp in a blanket. I would call ahead of time because the kitchen gets busy! I saw grandma pop out so I know it's real deal made to order cooking. The owner was very accommodating he offered all customers waiting refreshments. Ramen was flavorful and spicy. Shrimp in a blanket were the best so far!! Wish I took pictures but I will save that for my next visit
google avatar

Tanzel S.

Yelp
To start this review off I want to say the customer service was outstanding! I walked to the car and ate a spring roll it was so good I went back in and ordered a couple more items. The kitchen was closed but they still let me order that speaks volumes because that usually doesn't happen often. The food was great to I'm honestly so pleased because New Orleans East doesn't have many places to eat like this. I ordered the South Thailand Wings, Thai Tea, Beef Green Bean Stir fry, Spring rolls, Pad Ga pow add chicken, & combination Fried rice. My favorite was the Pad Ga pow it was so flavorful and had some kick to it as well. The portions are amazing you will be very pleased! Everything else was outstanding as well. Only thing I had to say is the wings were a lil on the darker side like they were cooked in to hot of grease but that ain't matter cleaned the bone.. That being said you have to check this spot out I'll be back!
google avatar

Irethea T.

Yelp
The vibes inside was dope, the hostess(chef daughter) was very helpful with getting the right things to eat. The food tasted amazing.

Yelp
I would normally post pictures along with my review but half of it was gone before I even realized I didn't take a pic. The Pad Thai is 10/10! HUGE portion & delicious. The green Thai Tea is a must have. I grabbed the crab rangoon on the way out and don't think I've made a better decision! The staff and owner are the icing on top. Overall 5 stars for Thai Nola. A must have if in New Orleans East.
google avatar

Zakiya P.

Yelp
This amazing Thai restaurant is a great original Thai restaurant with a twist!! Our takeout was delicious and fast service!! I would definitely recommend you take time to drive the east New Orleans visit this restaurant!! You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Reia B.

Yelp
I am so glad to have this Thai restaurant in the east! The owners and family are so nice and appreciative of your business. I have had the chicken Pad Thai, crispy spring rolls, and crab ragoons. The pad Thai is enough for 3-4 people and I think I'm addicted to the spring rolls. I have to try some other menu items but what I've tried has not disappointed. They are located in the strip on Bullard and there is a descent amount of seating, as well as a bar. There was a small birthday taking place in the back during one of my visits. Plenty of parking as well. If you are in the area and enjoy Thai food, please give them a try! Until we meet again!
google avatar

Amber V.

Yelp
Being new to Thai food I wasn't sure what to expect but ai heard a lot of very good things about this restaurant and decided to give it a try. Walking into the restaurant it was busy. Which it is always a good sign. Please we're enjoying their food at the tables and I even saw a few people eating a few bites of their food before taking home their to go orders. I ordered the Combination pad Thai with level one spice, the calamari and a Thai tea. I thought the Pad Thai was tasty but It was spicier than expected. I would get it again. The red Thai tea was delicious, sweet and creamy. The calamari unfortunately is what lost the star for me. It was kind of a fried stuck together mess, I wasn't impressed with it, but maybe it might fair better eating it in the restaurant instead of to go. All in all I will back to try more of Nola Thai! I'm glad you are in the East!

Willie M.

Yelp
I enjoyed my FIRST visit! The amount of food they gave me was shocking! Two people could have ate my portion. Service was good and ambiance was as well. My wife felt the rolls were fried a little too hard, they were crunchy but I ate them. Added another order as well. The food was amazingly fresh. Will return.
google avatar

Rachael B.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food and service! This is the best Thai food we've ever had. We ordered the Pad Ga Pow and Pad Woo Sen - both were full of flavor and made with fresh vegetables. The owner was extremely friendly. We are just visiting the area, but if we lived here we'd definitely come here all the time for dinner.

K D.

Yelp
My daughter and I've been craving for some Thai foods since moving here from Nor Cal. Our first time at Thai Nola so we just wanted to try a couple dishes, combo pad Thai (can't go wrong with this safe entree) and chicken pad ga pow (recommended by the owner). Both dishes were spice level 2. I normally eat very spicy but I wouldn't go higher than a 2. Love the spice. Thumb up!! The service was outstanding. Very knowledgeable on their spices, herbs, etc... Provided great recommendations. We met both the owners / chef...such pleasant personalities. The restaurant had a delightful and peaceful ambiance. The music and TV were playing in the background but it wasn't too loud where we can't hear ourselves. In summary, we would definitely come back here.

Shanette W.

Yelp
Oh My Gosh!!! Just got the Pad Ga Pow with Shrimp and IT WAS AMAZING!!! It was a very generous portion, but I had to stop eating it to take a call. I am so looking forward to getting back to it later today and trying something else when I visit the next time.

Al F.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is excellent and we'll favored. By far my favorite restaurant
google avatar

Carley C.

Yelp
I visited Thai Nola looking at the pictures and reviews and I will say it's worth it to go. The price, the atmosphere, and the friendliness of the staff are all great enough to make you want to keep coming back but the food...THE FOOD IS GOOD. I've had two different dishes and tried two different appetizers. Not to mention they have daily specials as well. Over all good stop for anything Thai and Cajun and the authenticity and freshness of ingredients is great too.
google avatar

Dudley S.

Yelp
This place was awesome! Unfortunately we could not try the Gumbo that we heard about. The Owner made up for that with a free app and we enjoyed some very tasty food. E3 was so flavorful and the Orange chicken was a dream..... We from Texas (The Houston 3) and if we do come back this way we will definitely be back! Thank you for a really enjoyable dining experience
google avatar

E W.

Yelp
The service was great, the environment was relaxing, and the food was excellent. I had the boat noodles because the waitress mentioned the dish was similar to Pho. After eating it, I have to say that the boat noodles were actually BETTER than any pho I've had (and I've had a lot of pho)! I also had the crab rangoons and chicken satay, and both were super flavorful and delicious! The drinks were really good (and strong!) as well. I'm happy we have a Thai restaurant in NOLA East, and best believe I will be returning soon!
google avatar

Maurice L.

Yelp
Amazing food and great atmosphere! If you are ever in New Orlean's' East, please stop by and give them a try!

Skye M.

Yelp
This family owned restaurant is a hidden gem in the East! I wanna thank the owner & his daughter for the Great hospitality! I ordered Togo because I wasn't dressed to dine in & the atmosphere felt like family. The food chef Kisses!!! OMG SO MUCH FLAVA! S/O to th Chef! Excuse my picture, I did start eating before I got my cute pic but I'll be visiting again real soon! I'm a foodie & I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good food, service and a nice dining experience!

Michelle M.

Yelp
ThaiNOLA is my favorite!! The food is excellent. The service is top notch. Family friendly environment and the drinks are yum yum!
google avatar

Adrian P.

Yelp
I visited for the first time after reading that they were broken into. Thefood was hot ant the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I had a E3 recommend by a guy leaving as I was walking in and glad I asked. For the price it was a lot of food can easily be shared. The owner and his daughter were very pleasant and as I watched plates coming out I know I will be back.
google avatar

Jo Ann G.

Yelp
Everything was Great I mean the entire order was divine I will be back..... #blackexcellance #NOLA
google avatar

Meedy B.

Yelp
I only got a pic of my food and one other person. Was planning to get others as they came out and totally slipped my mind. But don't worry, I will be back within the next few days. The food, atmosphere and hospitality is amazing. Felt so good to come home to New Orleans and enjoy family friendly food and service. Everything is made fresh!!!!! Not to mention, the portion sizes allowed us to eat and take some home for later. my family was beyond impressed!
google avatar

Dee L.

Yelp
First time dining here and I tried the Pad Ga Pow stir fry on the advice of the owner. This dish was exactly how I expect stir fry to taste. The sauce was flavorful, protein plentiful, the portions very generous, but the vegetables were most impressive. All of the veggies were perfectly prepared, and I later learned that they were locally sourced. The restaurant was small but clean, and the owners were very personable. I would definitely dine here again.

Tarik H.

Yelp
Amazing people even better food!! I love food in New Orleans, but this place is top of the top!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Very delicious and fresh, tried the glass noodle entree with shrimp and veggies. Ordered take out but dine in available as well. Great addition to New Orleans East.
google avatar

Rick B.

Yelp
Went for the first time the other day based on positive reviews and they did not disappoint. I ordered Chicken Pad Thai and the Crab Rangoon appetizer. Both were amazing! The Rangoon skin was thin and crunchy, with plenty of filling. The Pad Thai had plenty of Chicken with great flavor and the garnishes were a nice touch. I did place my order to go, and was greeted by a very nice gentleman who took my order. The place looks very clean and I can't wait to come back and dine in next time. Possibly even get the #E3 that was suggested to me, that sounded delicious as well.
google avatar

Tinisha M.

Yelp
Food is absolutely amazing, hot and fresh. Staff and owner is top tier. Don't get me started on the serving size, I ordered the Orange chicken and Fried rice, both items were enough to share with 3 extra people. ThaiNola is a beautiful fusion I couldn't be more happier with.
google avatar

Montrell T.

Yelp
The best of both worlds have never had Thai in Thailand as good as it is in New Orleans very comfortable atmosphere staff is excellent owners home grown from New Orleans and Thailand the best the city has to offer recommend you stop when in town
google avatar

Diana V.

Yelp
I ordered for take out. Food was done in a timely manner. I ordered tofu pad Thai level 3, which is their highest level. I thought the tofu would be fried but it's good this way too. The dish wasn't spicy to me though. So either they forgot the level I wanted or my tolerance is just too high lol. I can only do level 3 at Secret Thai. Hopefully they can make it even more spicy next time for me. The dish itself was delicious! Everything was so fresh and hot when I received it. Only thing that wasn't included were utensils and napkins. If I were to eat it elsewhere other than home, I'd be out of luck. The chicken satay had good flavor but was a bit dry to me. The peanut sauce was delicious though! It reminded me of a peanut sauce my aunt used to make that I loved. I may need to ask for extra next time lol. My first time trying here and won't be my last. I'm glad we now have a Thai restaurant in New Orleans east. Secret Thai was the closest and even that felt a bit far. I wish for them to be successful. I wish they had drunken noodles though, one of my favorite dishes.

Dwayne V.

Yelp
Excellent food and services. Large potions made With love. Great family restaurant.
google avatar

Toya W.

Yelp
Thai Nola is absolutely AMAZING! The service is top notch, and the food was absolutely DELICIOUS! The owner is so hospitable, and his daughter was the server, who was also very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. She provided excellent recommendations. For the appetizers we had crab rangoon, shrimp in a blanket, and chicken satay. For our entrees we had the Pad Ga Pow and Thai Nola Boat Noodle (Thai version of Pho). The chicken satay was so delicious it didn't last long enough for a picture. The portions are so large it's definitely enough to eat from at least twice. For our drinks the owner let us sample the Mai Thai and Katrina water. When you mix the two together I believe it's called a Thai Nola, and you definitely have to be careful with drinking because it tastes like juice with no hints of alcohol...but it's definitely in there. I now have myself a new favorite Thai restaurant in New Orleans East!

Tanisha M.

Yelp
The shrimp fried rice was really good!!! I will be returning to try something else. Great location and plenty of parking

Ashaki H.

Yelp
What a gem in New Orleans East. The fried chicken and French fries were soooo good. The chicken with veggies and rice was very tasty as well. I visited when they had a very large party so my order was mixed up and Inhad to wait an extra 20 minutes. It was worth it, I will be back.

Trent S.

Yelp
Me and my family came here the day after MARDI GRAS and it was awesome I look forward to coming back on my next trip to the N.O
