The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"Anchorage is swimming in Thai, Lao and Vietnamese food, but Thai Orchid in East Anchorage stands out. Take-out only since the pandemic, this restaurant offers quality, efficient service and variety. Local favorites include the pad ped pork belly, pad kee mao with homemade noodles, chicken angel noodles and yum neua salad. The menu items come spicy, so make sure to specify if that’s an issue." - Julia O'Malley

Another Thai joint spotted in Anchorage! On this rainy day, I was craving something hot and spicy—so I headed straight here. The sweet lady greeted me with a glass of ice water and a little bonus bowl of instant noodle soup. Love that energy! My go-to dish at every Thai restaurant? Som Tum, Thai papaya salad! Today I went for the Lao-style version with that ultra-fermented fish sauce. Sooo funky, sooo flavorful, sooo GOOD. I ordered it at spice level 4 out of 5, and honestly? Not quite spicy enough. Next time I’m going full throttle, level 5. For my main, I had Yen Ta Fo noodle soup. The broth instantly sent me back to the streets of Bangkok. Thick, chewy rice noodles and all the right toppings, total comfort food. Will I be back? 100%. If you’re in Anchorage and craving Thai food, add this spot to your list. From one Thai to another—i highly recommend!

Google
Undoubtedly, the best Thai food place for me in Alaska! Their Drunken Noodles and Pad Baby corn - Absolutely delicious! Do try and enjoy!

Google
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Apparently, they now have new owners. The meal I've ordered for years is not the same. Quite frankly it is terrible! Portion is way smaller, sauce not the same, and quality of the pork belly is awful. Such a shame, as it was one of our go to places. *Update (1/3/2025): My wife got me to try the dish again (Order: S1007), and I did appreciate the reply from the owner. The taste is better than my last experience, but the portion size is extremely small for costing over $21.00. (see third picture) As you can tell from picture 1 vs. picture 3, the pork is cooked better than the last time, but the skin is not popped like the previous owners used to do. Based on the portion size, price, & unpopped pork skin, I will keep my 1-star ratings and seek out other restaurants!

Google
The food was amazing! So fresh and flavorful. We ordered fresh rolls, shrimp roll, pumpkin curry and drunken noodles. Everything was off the charts. We will be back!

Ashlee E.

Google
We were greeted and were sat down almost immediately. Our waitress was friendly and was very attentive. I ordered the fresh spring rolls and yellow beef curry (mild). The fresh rolls tasted fresh, light and crunchy — i would have loved if they had chili oil on the tables to mix in the with the sauce thats brought out. The curry flavors were wonderful, potatoes were soft and meat was cooked well! I thought the portions were fulfilling and will definitely be back!

Google
The food tasted fine, but our three meals all came out at different enough times that each of us could have finished eating before the next person got their meal. Must have been understaffed. My kiddo also got sick from his meal. Overall, my experience just didn’t match the ratings this place has.

Lori Larson-Proffitt

Google
Panang curry was very flavorful. Big portions and heaping amounts of protein. Easily 2 meals from an entree, which eases the price point for me. 👍🏻

Beverly Blake

Google
Fresh spring roll worth it. I ate as much of the yellow curry as I could fit in my stomach. Lovely staff. Good value.

Yelp
Another wonderful take out dinner from Thai Orchid a few days ago. Fresh rolls, pad Thai, red curry, papaya salad. All were excellent, and I appreciated the added heat in the salad! So good! Had to gulp some serious water as a chaser. The red curry was the star here. Just delicious. Love Thai Orchid!

Yelp
Great food, good prices, service with a smile, cozy, and you can now order online! I particularly enjoyed the pad zee ew and sticky rice. This place fills up quick for dinner!

Yelp
This place was seriously damaged by Covid. Used to be great, one of the better Thai places in town. No more. Service was not terrible, just very inept - seems to be mostly a take out place now, so they aren't service oriented apparently. One of us ordered a stir fry - it wasn't. Just par boiled veggies with slightly seasoned shredded boiled chicken, zero sauce - the antithesis of saucy Thai dishes. The larb was ok, cold, and the curry- nothing special. Egg rolls - perfectly flaky - completely flavorless - dipping sauce - Nam Jim Po Piah - bad, mostly vinegar. Any of it I could make way better at home in 15 minutes- high prices for small portions. Wasn't terrible though and it was clean - so I be kind and give two stars. This is my second try since Covid- very disappointing from what it was - none of us will be going back
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
First the positives - the Larb was fantastic and the drunken noodle was piping hot. Spring rolls weren't my favorite compared to other places but were good. Now the not so positive (but not bad) Service took quite a while. They were busy, but people came in behind us and got all their food before we got our first dish. Not bad just annoying. Big kicker was the Larb being cold when we got it.... still ate it and would order again, just something to keep in mind.

K G.

Yelp
Reliable food and service, clean place. My go to for Thai close to home. Inconsistent hours recently, call before you go.

Zioen F.

Yelp
I though I was getting real Thai food made with love, don't waste your time first off I ordered beef lahp and was giving something else then this is what they give me the owners son is a friend of mine so I wanted to try them out but I'm definitely not coming here again

Yelp
My family and I ordered takeout from here while we were in Anchorage on vacation and it unfortunately was just not very good... Not sure if it was because we got the wrong things but the only item I actually enjoyed was the spring rolls. Fresh spring rolls: These were the shining star of this meal! They cut up 3 spring rolls into bite size pieces which I really liked. However, the rice paper was sticking together by the time we got home so some of the pieces fell apart though I think this may just be due to the amount of time that passed after we left the restaurant. Drunken noodles (pad kee mao) with beef: The texture of the rice noodles was not good at all; they were sticking to one another and also a bit mushy. Additionally, the flavor of this wasn't great and they didn't wrap the styrofoam container either so it was leaking. Pad khing with tofu: I know this dish is ginger + chicken but I feel like the amount of ginger they used was just WAYYY too much. The only part I enjoyed about this was the steamed rice (lol) and the tofu. Absolutely would never order this again.

Yelp
We've eaten here for years and years and it is reliably good every time. In our opinion, it is amongst the very best places to eat in Anchorage. Our favorites are the Ka-Pao w/Chicken, cream cheese wontons, fried spring rolls, and the Pho ("Beef Noodle Soup"). Also, it's even better now that they added delivery-everything arrived quickly and very thoughtfully packaged as to not leak or make a mess. Dining in is good too-service is friendly and welcoming...and fast!

Yelp
Great food! I ordered for takeout, and the food was ready very quickly. I ordered the tom kha soup and yellow curry. Both were incredible!
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Really really good Thai food. I thin the pa naeng was the best I have ever tasted and the spring rolls were excellent as well. I loved the pork belly in the sauce. The spice level was a bit intense but not over the top. The spring rolls are pretty tasty but it is kind of weird how they cut them up ahead of time.

Nika D.

Yelp
Ok I like it, Picasso Food was good, service was quick, the atmosphere of the restaurant seemed quiet but overall pretty chill ‍

Yelp
My Anchorage Thai tour (note, begun before peak Corona) continues! This is one of my favorites, for two reasons: - They are one of the spicier places. I said "extra spicy" and did not even specify a level, and it was appropriately hot. I find the "5-star" at most Thai places in town to be pretty tame. - They have great lunch specials. (that come with soup) Additionally, the service was spectacular and the ambiance was bright and airy. I was in-and-out in well under an hour. Great Thai stop if you're in the area.
google avatar

Randy R.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend. I stopped in and had the chicken pad Thai. It was awesome awesome awesome . 4 spicy. Pretty hot but I didn't start sweating. So...Perfect. All vegetables were fresh. Chicken cooked perfectly. Okay enough gushing. I will be going back and trying the Angel noodles. I've lived in Anchorage for 35 years. I wish I had gone here sooner. $15.50 chicken pad Thai; cheaper and fresher; and more volume versus any other place in town. Good restaurants in Anchorage are rare. This one is now on my list.

Yelp
Worst food I've had in years - bland- overly boiled - if I lived there I would NEVER recommend to anyone!!!! One server working - and he wasn't good at serving. How people rate this as highly as they do is beyond me-

Alane J.

Yelp
Lunch specials were great! We enjoyed the green curry and garlic beef. Lunch special was $15 and came with entree, rice, soup and fried egg roll. Both dishes were flavorful and spiced to our preference. Service was quick and attentive. Atmosphere is simple but I didn't come for the atmosphere. Just simple great food. Great lunch stop!

Yelp
I ordered food to bring home from Thai Orchard. I ordered drunken noodles and pad, Thai and the fried vegetable rolls appetizers. All was totally excellent. When I picked it up the staff was very friendly and helpful and the expressions of delight on the seated customers made me determined to eat in the next time. So far, it's the best I've experienced in Anchorage.
google avatar

Chinh G.

Yelp
The serving is really small. It is a children size bowl and plate. Was very disappointed. People will pay for what it's worth, but not happy for a cheap price and a child play size.
google avatar

Katy F.

Yelp
An oldie but a goodie. Fresh flavors and ingredients make this Thai food a stand out. My favorites: fresh rolls, egg plant chicken, peanut tofu and Tom yum!

Nga V.

Yelp
Good foods, great service. We visited the area and found this restaurant on Yelp. Very satisfied with our dinner. Best curry dishes.

Yelp
I'm sure I mentioned this before, but Thai cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines to enjoy, share, and celebrate with, especially when it involves Thai Orchid. This place holds my oldest memory of this cuisine nearly 20 years ago, back when they were located on Dimond Boulevard in the Kings Row Shopping Center. My ENTIRE family became regulars immediately (and we have a big family). The obsession got to the point of ordering for pick-up every weekend to celebrate anything happening in our lives. It became the default to family dinners. Thai Orchid is central to our get-togethers because of their familial warm welcome and their hearty, home-cooked style meals. Sometimes, the wait can leave you antsy, but they cook to order...that takes love and patience, man. Also, you want spicy? They will bring the heat. I have been spoiled by their dishes since childhood and if anything has changed, it was only the location. The food, service, and the family are still just as wonderful.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
If I ordered the chicken larb again I'd ask for it to be more spicy and to have no mint leaves. Im not sure I'd order it again if theres a lot of juice from the chicken larb that drenched the lettuce wraps. Too bad dining in isn't an option.
google avatar

Janette V.

Yelp
It's so GOOD yummy yummy yummy in my tummy. Those drunken noodles were heavenly and the service is good. My very first lunch here in Alaska after a long trip from Houston was so worth it after those SCRUMPTIOUS noodles.

Lori K.

Yelp
Love their food, love, the kind hearted people that work there, everything is a 10, I highly recommend them if you want some good Thai food!!!
google avatar

Trudy B.

Yelp
Sadly, I've given this place three tries and it's a fail every time. It's probably...no, it IS the last try for me. The customer service is terrible, the food is less than desirable and falls completely flat for flavor. We have so many great Thai options in anchorage and the food combined with service here just fails in comparison. The fried rice was more like Spanish rice...but not even good. The Phad Thai was dried out and the flavor was bland (never good for Thai). The panang curry is my favorite dish and it was a 3 out of 5 maybe. I'm so sorry but pass this up, there are better thai options in town!
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Thai Orchid is by far my favorite Thai place in town! I usually end up here once a week. The decor invokes imagery of Thailand, with a depiction of a Kinnari/Kinnara (forgive me, I always mix the two up) right in the entry, and beautiful artwork following throughout with traditionally Thai themes. The space is not particularly roomy, but they make the most of the space. It can get a bit loud, but nothing excessive. For recommendations, I have to say that the Phat-Zee-Ew is my go-to, with its thick eggs noodles, delicious sauce, and choice of tofu/chicken/pork/beef always cooked right. No joke, its actually addictive and I crave it often. The shrimp wontons and any of their lunch specials would be a close second, though the soup choices are no slouches either. This is a good place for a casual lunch date, a not-too-private meeting, or a stop in with friends. If you are ordering ahead for pick-up, be sure to give them around 30+ minutes, as they generally have a pretty good crowd (and I have never eaten there when at least two pick-up orders weren't occurring). WARNING: If you have a peanut allergy, be sure to ask about the dish you are purchasing. Like most Thai places, peanut oil and peanut sauce are staples. I would check--even if it is not listed in the ingredients--for safety.

Shay R.

Yelp
Best Thai in anchorage. The food is amazing and the staff is always friendly. The Thai tea is the best I've gotten in Alaska.

David W.

Yelp
Meekrop is one of a kind and after 20 years remains among many others ( Penang Curry) a reason to frequent this restaurant--you can't go wrong w Thai Orchid noodles and wings etc

Cindy S.

Yelp
Best Thai food in town...hands down! The staff is friendly. The restaurant is locally owned and run by an awesome family. Very efficient service! My favorite is the Pad Thai with fried tofu and a Thai iced tea :)

laurie s.

Yelp
I ordered here for the first time and I'm so disappointed! I ordered 4 entrees for take out. She repeated back to me on the phone all 4 entrees and quoted me a 1 hr and 40 minute wait time. I said ok and when I arrived only 2 were there. She got distracted and didn't write down the other 2 entrees! I stead of making it right and making the rest of our order right away she over and over claimed that it wasn't my fault while never apologizing it even making eye contact with me. Sounds and acts like someone who knows they screwed up to me! I had to wait an additional 55 minutes for my other 2 entrees!!!! We will NEVER be going back there again! And on top of that the food wasn't even good! Go to Thai Kitchen! You'll thank me later!
google avatar

Joanne O.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've had in town! They make it spicy upon request which I love. My favorites: Spring rolls, chicken wings, stuffed chicken wings, pad see ew, pad kee mao (drunken noodles), chow mein, pad woon sen, curries,... I mind as well say the whole menu! Lol No disappointment on my palate here. Take out is a wait but what do you expect from everyone wanting this delicious Thai food. Its definently worth the wait. Who ever complains about the wait time at this restaurant is an impatient idiot cus its about the same wait time as Mooses Tooth (Not complaining about Mooses Tooth cus I like eating there too).
google avatar

Moriah K.

Yelp
I have been coming to Thai Orchid for years, and I have never been disappointed. Aside from the Thai Iced Coffee, my favorite two menu items have always been the Crab Fried Rice and the Chicken Ko-See-Mee. The rice has carrots, peas, onions, and real crab meat. I'm not sure what the seasoning they use it but it's amazing. Chicken Ko-See-Mee (pan-fried egg noodles with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, onions, bell peppers, and baby corn). Whatever mild-but-flavorful sauce they use with it is what sticks out the most with me. Delicious. But today, I went on their website and saw their lunch specials. For $12.00, you have seven options. I tried Lunch F - Ka Pao Beef stir fried with jalapenos, bell peppers, onions, chili, and basil. It came with a large side of jasmine rice, a cup of curry, and a fried spring roll. It was soooo good!! If you're looking for good Thai food, try anything at Thai Orchid. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Lenworth T.

Yelp
Just an absolute great place to grab Thai food. Never a disappointment for me. Plan early it's gets pretty busy and waiting might be your only issue until your stars your food , and then that frustration goes away.

Helen J.

Yelp
My coworker recommended this place to me and i am very satisfied the food is absolutely amazing and very delicious with so much flavor.
google avatar

Cheerly L.

Yelp
All the while the food is pretty good, I feel like the price was a bit steep for the amount you get. Flavoring was pretty good and I have to say that Ive actually found good curry in town. The chicken was almost like slow cooked and it wasn't just chicken breast like many other restaurants usually use. The papaya wasn't too bad either. But for $10.50, there wasn't much to eat. My friends got curry noodles, Ka Pao Roast Pork, and another dishe I forgot the name of. These were good too. Took the waitress 30 mins to come take our order though. On the bright side, they were nice and friendly. Be forwarn, the place is pretty tiny so if youre wanting a big group, come when they first open to get seats, otherwise, you'll have to wait.
google avatar

Misty S.

Yelp
Best Thai restaurant in Anchorage. I love the pad Thai and the Tom kha shrimp. Make sure to go early. It's a very small restaurant and can get very busy.
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
Came to check out a new-to-us Thai place. The fresh rolls were so good! Three rolls came in 12, bite sized pieces. Shrimp, chicken, and egg inside. The sweet sauce was yummy too. I got the noodle special it was pretty good. We also got the Penang curry. Overall we liked everything. Would go back again

Kassy B.

Yelp
The food is good but good luck ever getting through on their phone at lunch time. I haven't been able to actually order lunch from them in months because I can't get through. Today was it for me, I won't be ordering anymore. I called for thirty minutes. So sad
google avatar

Jack P.

Yelp
Thai Orchid is close to my house and my family and I have been meaning to try it for some time. Ordered by phone right after they opened for dinner at 4:30. Ordered chicken pad thai, angel noodle, and beef kang ped $40. Hard to find kang ped on the menu because they spell it weird. Or maybe they spell it correctly and I spell it weird. I don't know. The lady who took the order said it would be 45 minutes. Seemed excessive, but it was my first time. I got there about 35 minutes later and my food was ready with several others, so I bet mine was done in 30. All three dishes tasted really good, decent portion size. I would put the pad Thai just below Lahn Pad Thai's pad thai, but not by much 8/10. The kang ped was just about the same 8/10. The angel noodles was good, not great. 7.5-8.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
This may be Mrs. B and my favorite restaurant in Anchorage. It is small, pretty darned clean, sparsely decorated, usually running at 95% capacity, with delicious food. We are acknowledged upon entry and informed of wait time (if any). Mrs. B always gets the same thing from the extensive menu, Cashew Chicken. She insists that his is the best in town. I on the other hand, have been eating my way through the whole menu. So far my favorites are the aka # 57 Po Roast Pork, #58 Phat Phed Rost Pork, #69 Pah Naeng with Pork Belly, and #71 the Geang Kiow Wahn Chicken. All of the dishes are made from scratch to order using incredibly fresh produce and better than required ingredients. The family that runs Thai Orchid has answered their calling to share the culinary facet of their culture in honoring family and guests by providing flawlessly prepared meals. I say it time and time again, passion is the most important ingredient and the only one that can't be overused. Season away Thai Orchid, season away! Eat hearty my friend.

Vilma C.

Yelp
I have been a costumer for over 15 years and is my favorite place to eat. The food is authentic, delicious and never disappoints. The service is great and friendly. My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary and out of all the restaurants in Anchorage we chose to celebrate it here cause it feels like home.
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
The BEST Thai restaurant in town! The Pad Kee Mao is the best I have ever had. They make their own noodles too! Pretty spicy, so I like it with some rice. Love the spring rolls too.

Tony V.

Yelp
great thai food in ak!! personally had the pad see ew and pineapple fried rice, great proportions and i split it with my cousin
google avatar

Adrian F.

Yelp
Thai Orchid is one of the best Thai places in Anchorage! Fresh rolls are always FRESH! The Mee-Krop is my favorite appetizer and most times I ate as an entree. The Pad Thai is awesome. Definitely try the Thai Orchid Noodle. Oh and the Shrimp Fried Rice is good too, the shrimps are a nice size. Really can't go wrong with anything you get from here, everything is good and fresh!
google avatar

Amber J.

Yelp
This is an outstanding Thai restaurant! We had ordered the yellow curry wide egg noodles (42) with chicken and Ka Pao Beef (58) a few days ago and they both tasted amazing! The yellow curry has so much flavor with all the chicken and veggies stirred together with the noodles and curry sauce. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. And the Ka Pao beef was so flavorful and spicy that it just made every bite delightful. We also had their fried spring rolls with their sweet chili sauce. So very delicious. They have a wonderful takeout system and are very efficient with how accurate their orders are, never getting any items confused or incorrect. Also, I love their Covid-19 precautions. It's so clean and orderly going in to pick up your food. This place is highly recommended!!!!
google avatar

Kel O.

Yelp
I've been to this location twice. It sits in a shopping center area, but there is still plenty of parking. If it's a busy time, it's a little awkward sitting the entryway while waiting for a table, but it has never been long for two people. I like most of the menu options, but I've ordered the squid salad. I like it, but I wish there was more than the lettuce, onions, and fish. I do like that the squid is nice and clean and well seasoned. I should probably explore the menu some more. I plan on returning. I like the setting and he likes eating there too. Prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
My local go-to place for good Thai food. I eat here fairly regularly and am never disappointed. Food is reasonably priced, and they can easily handle groups up to five or six people. There is a good number of standard options on the menu, and the taste is exactly what you'd expect, with the nice, quiet ambiance adding a little something tot he experience. Service has been a bit uneven at times, but it's generally pretty fast. A good lunch location due to being able to get in and out in under an hour easily.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
I GLADLY wait 2 hours in order to pick up Angel Noodles w Chicken and Shrimp!! LOVE the Thai Orchid family and how they LOVE (genuinely LIKE) making nummy, traditional Thai cuisine and sharing it with all of us! Either eat in or take out but plan a wait!

Rob O.

Yelp
I have been here pre-Covid19 and have done take-out with them a few times. The best thing about Thai Orchid is the very tasty well seasoned Thai food. It is as good as it gets in Anchorage. They have good variety in their weekday lunch specials and a far wider variety of their non-specials but excellent entrees soups and vegetarian fare. My only 'criticism' is that they only have one phone line and it is hard to reach them after they open, because they are so popular. I've been successful walking in to order and then coming back to pickup. Also they do not offer brown rice. White rice only.
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
I really do not understand the hype at all. The pad thai was gross. The sweet and sour chicken was basically a soup. Waste of money.
