As a local, I grew up going to Thai Smile. It was long known as some of the best Thai food in the desert, and even as new spots opened over the years, it still held a strong reputation among people in the valley.
I understand inflation is real and prices are rising everywhere, but with higher prices you don't expect portion sizes or quality to decline. Unfortunately, that's exactly what we experienced when we ordered on Christmas night. We knew many restaurants were closed, so we were excited to see Thai Smile was open and decided to order delivery. For three people, our total came to $105. While that's steep, we assumed we'd get at least two meals each, as we always had in the past.
We ordered a large tom kha soup, pad thai, kung pao shrimp, and shrimp rolls wrapped in rice paper. When the food arrived, we were genuinely confused. The kung pao shrimp had about eight shrimp total, mostly mixed with vegetables. The shrimp rolls were messy and primarily filled with vegetables, with very little shrimp. The soup was good and properly portioned, but even the pad thai wasn't enough for a single leftover. None of us are big eaters, and we used to consistently get multiple meals out of leftovers here.
Beyond the portion sizes, the overall quality just wasn't there. The food tasted rushed, the flavors were inconsistent, and it was clear that whoever was cooking that night was not putting in the care this place used to be known for.
I understand costs increase, but when prices go up and portion size and quality go down at the same time, it makes it very difficult to want to return.
