10 Best Thai Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Head chef Ann, who emigrated to the United States almost four decades ago, focuses on fusing Michigan-sourced ingredients on her Thai menu. She uses antibiotic-free and cage-free chicken, beef with no added hormones or antibiotics, and organic non-GMO tofu. The dining room is temporarily closed for renovations but takeout is available." - Monica Williams

Very disappointed. The server was excellent, very personable and accommodating and explained everything that they do. The menu has all the standards with lots of options. The problem was the execution. We started off with the fresh spring rolls. By themselves they were good, fresh, and very large. They came with two sauces. The peanut one was markedly sweet, the other one tasted like sugar water. Then came the entrees. All three were out of balance! Strong sweet tendency. No sour, little heat (although, to be fair, we asked for mild) and nothing else. One of our group termed the curry dish inedible. That's going too far. But it was certainly not good. While all the vegetables were fresh and the cooking was to order. This complete lack of balance of flavors was very disappointing.

Google
Wow this is my new favorite restaurant! You can taste the difference, very healthy and fresh! Staff/owner very friendly. A must try if you haven’t gone yet! I ordered online and picked the food up.

Google
Ordered the vegan Thai with tofu hot. I got clumped rice noodles with barely any sauce and zero flavor . When I called I was transferred three times and basically got no help except telling me the dish was usually dry ?? For $30 this was a complete rip off not going back again

Google
This has been our favorite Thai place since 2019. We go there every week pr every other week. We love it! All dishes are light meals and a perfect meal for lunch. I never have the feeling that I overate or the food is heavy on my stomach. You can put your ingredients together however you’d like to. Pad Thai with glass noodles, mild and extra sauce is my favorite. Soooo good!!! Because of the pandemic they changed the style of the restaurants from ceramic dishes to paper, but what never changed was the high quality of the food and the good service of the staff. I highly recommend this place.

Google
Thai Street Kitchen is a hidden gem! The food is always packed with flavor, and the customization options are incredible — you can truly tailor your meal to your taste. Ordering is a breeze with QR codes right at the table, making the whole experience quick and convenient. On top of that, the staff is absolutely fantastic — friendly, attentive, and welcoming every time. Highly recommend for anyone who loves fresh, flavorful Thai food done your way!

Google
For the last 8 years or so (maybe longer?) you will find my coworkers and I here every Tuesday 11-Noon. We all say it’s the best day of the week because we look forward to coming here so much. That alone should say something! Friendly and familiar staff, clean dining and kitchen areas. Excellent food. I’d have the vegetable curry 7 days a week if I could :D

Google
Amazing Thai food here, you won't be disappointed. It is a touch screen order dining establishment, easy to follow so don't be discouraged. The food will make up for it, in taste and quality. The staff is extremely helpful and the owner comes to the table to greet you and also assist you if needed. Nice portions, everything is made to order. Thank me later.

Ovalie B

Google
Anne, the owner, reacts with surprising hostility to even simple questions, and Pete comes across as rude and needlessly intimidating. A little calm—and maybe a massage—would go a long way sir. The food is far from authentic. Every dish is packed with sugar and processed oils, and no modifications are allowed, even for dietary needs. Flavors are unbalanced, bland, and lack finesse. Customer service needs serious improvement, and the atmosphere feels tense rather than welcoming. for better quality, flavor, and energy—go to SY THAI CAFE in ROYAL OAK Huge difference in taste and experience..

Yelp
Mixed feelings about this place, but came to the conclusion it is a solid high 3 to low 4 / 5 restaurant. things that add value: -HIGHLY customizable Thai cuisine to the individual palate/preference, whether that be GF, Vegetarian/Vegan, no MSG, Lite sauce, Organic. You won't see this anywhere (MI, at least). Most Thai restaurants are LOADED with HEAVY sauce that is overbearing, but this place pleasantly has the option to customize. I appreciate that. Also spice level is appropriate. -Service: Despite self service for kitchenware/water, the other service was quite good. I didn't like the taste of the veg curry b/c the sauce was too sweet, and it got remade without question. They came back multiple times to make sure it was to my liking which it then was. -Food: Overall pretty good. Chicken is chicken, steak is steak. Nothing special about the taste, but mentally it makes me feel good it is organic and no MSG. Things that could be improved upon: Service: This is mostly self-serve kitchenware/water and to go bowls. This is interesting because to them it is the only way to keep their prices down to have customers get a no - MSG, organic meal under $15 which is their mission, which I respect. However, I did get my own high chair for kid, cleaned our table, got kitchenware, etc., which was no big deal. -Food: preference - currys are a bit too sweet. THis is b/c of the coconut milk they use, which is not a problem to most people, but just be aware of this. I could not tolerate the amount of sweetness and they had it remade which was very nice of them. All in all, I would come back. Clean/healthy ingredients to a highly crave-able cuisine.

Yelp
Updated review. Actually spoke with the owner on the phone after my last review. He explained to me their mission for this restaurant, which is to create an affordable, MSG free, organic Thai food place for everyone. I was impressed by the theory and decided to try it again. I was not offered any monetary incentive btw, so this is a honest review. I have to say, this is not the best Thai food I have ever tasted, but this is the only MSG free Thai food restaurant in the area. Plus they offer organic ingredients. Their service is also excellent. They offer many diet accommodations, such as gluten-free or vegan. I was most impressed by their soup this time. Very unique. Full of flavor. Would definitely return just for the soup and the friendly service.

Brian S.

Yelp
This is the absolute best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. Ann, the proprietor, is the best. Her food is not occasionally excellent, it is always excellent. Hard working staff, excellent crew. Everything about this place is the best. We tried a another place because it was within a mile of our house but it was hardly worth it. I will always travel the extra 5 miles or so. The best. Please support this place because it is what good entrepreneurship deserves. - Brian

Yelp
The Tom Yum & Tom Ka soups were delicious. Just what was needed on a cold winter day to warm up. The fried rolls were pretty good with the dipping sauce. Service was pleasant. Will visit again on my next trip to the area. You should too. :)

Yelp
I got the drunken noodles and my husband got the chicken fried rice. I was a little surprised by lack of color of my food (usually it is dark brown) but it tasted good. Husband didn't really care for his rice, he ended up adding a whole container of red chili paste to it. The crab Rangoon, salmon rolls, and Thai iced tea were so good! I got a side of peanut sauce didn't really like. Food was fresh and good. Cute set up inside. Can't really tell that from the outside. We went there on a whim. I'm glad we did and will be back. If it's your first time, know you can order with the staff at the front, on the kiosk, or sit and order on your phone. If you sit, no one comes and takes your order but we were fine with that!

Yelp
Food quality gotten down, did not taste fresh. I came here years ago, I was disappointed in how big of a difference the food tasted. It was a different owner at that time so I guess it's expected for it to be different. My family and I love Thai food and have had tried many places. We decided to order takeout from here again and let me tell you we will NEVER come back. My mom felt sick after having their curry and this place is supposed to have healthier choices with it being organic. We had to go to urgent care since she was throwing up. We were really upset and I came back to comment to warn other people. If you want real authentic thai food, this place is not the one.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
I don't know how this place only has 4 stars. The food is consistently excellent. Chicken in the pad ped is always fresh. Vegetables are fresh. Spice level is always on point. Service is always great, although I always take out vs. eat in.
google avatar

Jeffrey W.

Yelp
I love the peanut curry. Nothing else matters. I'm forced to use 85 characters, but the quality of a peanut curry is the one and only thing that matters to me about a Thai restaurant, and this place makes a great one.

Yelp
Decided to get carry out over the weekend and was very pleased with most of the items. The Bangkok chicken is amazing with a nice crunchy bite and the sauce is delicious. Much better than some of the other Thai locations nearby. Also really enjoyed the Curry noodles. The perfect combination of curry and coconut milk and with medium spice and its going to be my go to carryout from now on. We also got the Pad Pak and that was a bit of a let down. The sauce was very bland and the chicken was dry and tasted reheated. I would definitely skip that one next time. Definitely will be back and may try some other dishes!

Yelp
This is my go-to spot for Thai food. It's always nice and fresh. Seems like ever since after Covid, it's more of a seat yourself and do everything yourself type of place. It's more of a quick in/out thing now. Which I don't mind.

Yelp
In town for a quick business trip working in the same strip mall as Thai Street Kitchen so it made for a very convenient lunch spot. I ordered the drunken noodle with chicken at medium spice level, and spring roll appetizer. The medium spice was of the perfect heat level and the dish made for a very satisfying lunch. I was further impressed later in the day when I observed the owner going above and beyond to help one of his staff through an incident regarding a personal vehicle parked behind the business. Great job TSK! Keep it up!

Gene S.

Yelp
Small portions. Staff not that nice. I didn't care for serving my food in a cardboard bowl. Not even a napkin was on the table. $15 bucks for 1 person pad Thai and a bottled water. What the heck? Not for me. The place is very clean and modern bit I will never come back.

Amy Z.

Yelp
I just wanted to update my review as a continued 5 STAR!! Quality is always on point, quick service, friendly staff, accommodating to orders and just delicious!! I get take out from here almost weekly. Fresh ingredients, gluten free options, correct spice levels and great portions. Keep up the tasty work!! And thanks!!

Lukas S.

Yelp
Hurry up, things to do places to be, be honest with you online wait times don't screw the people that make you money!

Starfuit G.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere! Amazing gluten free options. I normally get the curry noodles with shrimp

Yelp
One important thing to note: this restaurant no longer has waitstaff when dining in. You order and pre-pay at your table by phone (using Toast). I wanted to customize my basil Thai fried rice dish (no egg) but the ordering system does not accept special requests. So of course the entree arrived with egg (even though it wasn't listed as an ingredient). It was pretty flavorless with a minimal amount of basil, surprisingly enough. The vegetable curry was better, but far from the best I've had. The organic tofu is good. This used to be a nice dining experience but not so much anymore. Getting water, utensils and napkins is self serve. Entrees are served in recyclable cardboard paper bowls. And the plates? You guessed it: Recyclable cardboard as well. Waitstaff does bring your food to the table, but not much more. A disappointing experience.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
This is an update from my previous review. This place has migrated to more "fast food" for dine in . Paper containers, no interaction with staff...kinda sad an disappointing when you are hoping for a dine in experience

Adriana A.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've ever tasted and I try Thai most everywhere I go. Clean, courteous staff, helpful, ingredients are fresh and prepared just right. Good ambiance and great location.
google avatar

Yelp
Updated review. Due to current circumstances you can only get take out. I ordered twice since all this started, since this is my favorite thai spot and I want to support local business. Everything is well organized, you get in on your scheduled pickup time, tell you order number and they place your food on the tables next to entrance. Contact is minimum. They also offer curbside pickup, placing order in your trunk. Food as always is delicious. Yesterday my order was not ready when I came, so as apology they gave me free sweetand sour soup. It had chicken so I didn't try it, but my husband said it was very good.
google avatar

Drew S.

Yelp
My son loves this place. He said it's the best chicken and rice ever! Great chicken lettuce wraps too
google avatar

Yelp
Ok usually if I see the traffic light at Square Lake and Woodward green on Woodward I'm on the gas, but this time Thai Street Kitchen caught my eye. Unassuming in a popular strip mall this Thai is the real deal. Packed with lunch goers from Granny's to loud corporate hipsters who showed their youthfull independence by all wearing ill fitting suits and loud socks. Yawn. The packed dining room was a good sign. Portions are huge, hot and sour soup included with lunch was good but didn't stand out crispy roll to start were great. Beware medium spice on my entree was very medium. Great food and and service and as loud as a Bangkok street. Thai Street Kitchen. Thai-riffic! Go!

K ..

Yelp
We love the food here! Everything is fresh and natural/organic. Our kids love it and we try to come as often as we can.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious and service was fast, but prices seemed high for relatively small portions. You won't have leftovers like at other Thai places, but you'll spend the same if not more. Love how the menu was clearly marked for gluten free.

David D.

Yelp
I had a "hankering" for more chicken green curry after having some from another (famous) local place last night, and gave this a shot. I like food stupidly hot, and they didn't disappoint! But beyond the heat there's a depth of flavor that is hard to imagine from a food truck! Highly recommend!

John L.

Yelp
I've been going to Thai Street Kitchen for some time, and now it's time to tell everyone else how great they are. The wife finally tried my Drunken Noodles and proclaimed, "Now I know why I don't like Drunken Noodles; no one makes them like this!" They're not over cooked and the flavor is not just heat, it's perfect, as has been everything else we've tried here. The service is quick and pleasant - or you can use the colorful kiosk with pictures and descriptions, or the QR to your phone on the tables to order. Located in a great easy to get to spot - well worth putting on your what do I want to eat list!

Yelp
First time at Thai Street Kitchen and I must say, my daughter and I started off with the crab rangoons which were perfectly fried. For dinner, I ordered the drunken noodles and my daughter ordered the pad thai with shrimp. Both meals were fresh and delicious. I was very impressed with the restaurant and how clean it was on the inside. The best part was the manager stopped by our table and asked us how everything tasted. I thought that was extremely professional and I appreciated the gesture. Needless to say, my daughter and I will be back!
google avatar

Elina D.

Yelp
The best Thai food around! The coconut curry noodles is out of this world. I'm so addicted to this dish. The Bangkok chicken is also just as delicious. My only complaint is when I ordered both dishes hot, their hot isn't hot, it's barely even a medium. But the flavors are amazing. I love the fact that they only use the best ingredients, all organic. Even then, their prices are very reasonable. My new favorite spot.
google avatar

Harold S.

Yelp
Ordered the lunch size pad Thai. Lots of food and great taste. Clean restaurant with great Service. Hostess came out and asked how everything was. Solid four stars.
google avatar

Shail M.

Yelp
My daughter loves their pad Thai. Thank you It's a little too greasy for me but it's not that bad.

Yelp
For some reason, and I've written about this before, Detroit has some of the best Thai restaurants around...and I mean in the country. I know every big city claims to have some "Amazing" Thai places but trust, For some reason, Detroit is an anomaly when it comes to Thai Cuisine. I'll spare you, America, my two cents and theories as to why but, in regards to the Thai Street Kitchen; this place is the real deal. Obviously Familied owned, from the moment you walk and sit down, to the moment you "roll" out of here, stuffed and happy, you quickly understand why they're so good! Everything from the egg rolls to their curries are clearly well thought out and made with love and precision. I've eaten here twice this past week and I'll eat there again this week before going home. I've eaten at many Thai restaurants around this country and...I always think about the places in Detroit as setting the bar. This place is a definitely a "Winner-Winner, Chicken-Dinner" so enjoy B-ham. Well Done!
google avatar

Julie A.

Yelp
The food was very flavorful! Level HOT had a serious kick that for my nose running. But not too spicy that one couldn't taste all of the deliciousness. We ordered inside and it took about 15 minutes for our food to be prepared. The staff was quite friendly and helpful. I definitely will be going back for more.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered the crispy rolls, chicken pad Thai, and chicken masaman curry. We really enjoyed the crispy rolls (4 came in an order). You can never go wrong with ordering pad Thai here. The masaman curry was very flavorful. Both dishes were generous proportion sizes... plenty of leftovers for the next day. The ingredients were fresh and organic. We placed our orders online & the contactless pickup made it very convenient during covid times.

Yelp
This month our lunch group met at Thai Street Kitchen. When we called to see about a reservation, our group size varies from four to as many as twelve, this time it was four. The owner, Ann, explained that she had bought out her partner from the previous restaurant, Bangkok Cuisine, and changed the name. Being from Thailand, her focus is on making authentic Thai cuisine with quality ingredients. As is my custom, I decided to order Red Curry Chicken medium spice as my standard test of what I like. Then I will explore other menu items next time. my wife went with one of her favorites, Green Curry Tofu mild spice with Brown Rice. Our friends ordered Green Curry Chicken and Drunken Noodles, both mild spice. After about ten minutes our food arrived and we were ready to dive in. My Red Curry was perfect taste, slightly sweet and delicious, and a spice level that lets you know it's there! Everyone else loved the taste but said the "mild spice" seemed about like my medium spice. But we all were happy with our choices. We may have found our new favorite Thai restaurant.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Always fresh ingredients and great tasting food! Pad See Ew is always on point with a little spice or no spice if your allergic.

Jim G.

Yelp
Great food. Best Thai in the area. Organic and NO MSG. Place is immaculately clean. So many choices. Multiple choices of spice level. Everything tastes fresh. A must for great Thai
google avatar

Jong L.

Yelp
I was greatly disappointed perhaps because of high expectations from the name. This place is anything but Thai Street Kitchen. I'd say the opposite. It's clean inside unlike a street restaurant over in Bangkok. That's the only thing I could compliment. We had pad Thai and pad prik. Although some may find them clean and healthy, they didn't taste Thai at all. Too bland! I'd rather eat pad Thai from Costco. Rock and roll blaring in the kitchen didn't help the ambiance, either.

Lindsay B.

Yelp
my boyfriend has been going to this place for several years and as a Michigan native who loves all kinds of food this is his favorite in the area. They are also always friendly and have memorized his order. We go to school out of state and he refuses to try any other Thai places.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Great flavor and nice atmosphere. Service was kind and accommodating for take out. Great curry and thai tea!
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Great food , very nice Ambience very clean and the food was amazing I will not get Thai from anywhere else this is the place to go!!!

Yelp
I was up at my buddy's place, and we were trying to figure out where to get carry out. We knew that we wanted Thai food and how I picked this place was because they had lettuce wraps We called our order in, and the lady on the phone was amiable and answered questions. I ordered Chicken Pad Thai and chicken lettuce wraps, and my buddy got Pad Thai with vegetables. We get there, and the lady who gave us our food was excellent and pleasant. It may have been the same person I talked to on the phone. I am terrible with names. So we get back to my buddy's place, and I dig into the lettuce wraps; by the way, they were delicious. But when I dug into my chicken Pad Thai that is where it went downhill. The Pad Thai had no flavor to it whatsoever. I feel like they may have forgotten to add the sauce because it tasted exactly like plain cooked noodles would taste with no sauce. I ended up throwing most of it away. It wasn't very good. I tried some of my buddy's pad thai, and it tasted like how I would expect it. I am not saying I would not give it another chance. I know restaurants are struggling to get help. I would be willing to give it another shot.
google avatar

Dano R.

Yelp
Simplified menu that is chock full of some of the tastiest Thai dishes I've had anywhere. Ive only sampled a few entree's ( green curry chicken & pad ped tofu) but you can taste the fresh difference that's unmistakable. My only gripe is that take out orders cannot be made over the phone. Since I was leaving my office,I proceeded to order online and had to use either a debit or credit card versus paying cash.
google avatar

Darah H.

Yelp
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HOT AND SOUR SOUP! And this place starts your introduction with a bowl of this glorious delicious substance. I had the smoked salmon and avocado roll. DELICIOUS. The salmon was so smoky you could smell it and it melted in your mouth. The owner was present but not in a fussy hands on way so much that I didn't know that she was the owner until my friend told me after their conversation(he was a frequent customer). I'm so glad I went. This is now one of my favorite go to when I'm in the area. Keep yelping my friends.
google avatar

Cheryl B.

Yelp
Tried this place recently and was severely disappointed. The Thai basil fried rice was basically white rice with some Thai red chili's added. We also got the curry noodles, and they tasted a bit soapy. After so many great reviews I was expecting better. How do you mess up fried rice?
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Was brought here for a work lunch... was a little scared about the whole 'order at the kiosk and sit' concept. But I'm old, so... the food has been consistently good. Picked up a take out order for the entire family on a whim... my picky crew loved it. The apple salad is AMAZING and cannot be missed.

Yelp
There's been an upscaling of Thai food in the past few years and this is one of those clean and modern that places that you won't classify as being "adventurous"! The place is set in a strip mall but has a big dining area. It's clean, modern, and fresh. I've had many different dishes there. Fresh rolls: nice and healthy with your choice of meat. I like the shrimp. Lettuce and cilantro keeps it fresh. Tom Yum Shrimp: lots of flavor though the shrimp is a bit small. Catfish: chunks of breaded and fried catfish filet with green peppers and egg plant and basil. Spicy and flavorful. Green Curry. I like it with fried tofu. No spice - but there's spice inherent in the curry. Lots of peas in it. Very good as well. Lots of flavor in the curry. Great Thai place to go make it a regular stop! Only thing that I'd say is that they need to improve their kitchen speed.
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
Nice staff, clean restaurant and delicious food. We ordered the Bangkok chicken and the curry noodles. Both were very good. The only reason for me not leaving a 5 star is because we had asked for our food to be spicy and there was no spice at all. We also asked for extra crushed peanuts in our curry noodle but they only added a very small amount of whole peanuts. These are things that can easily be corrected upon our next visit. Normally take out food isn't as good as when you eat it in the restaurant but they do a great job on their carry out everything was so fresh. Keep up the great work on the delicious fresh food guys, you have new customers to add to your list!
google avatar

FRANK F.

Yelp
First time trying this unique restaurant and extremely satisfied from food to atmosphere to service all 5 stars! Tried several things and all were so fresh and flavorful and healthy choices. We would recommend to anyone and we definitely be back soon

Yelp
I've become a regular here lol! I think I order carry out from this place at least 2 times a month. Their food is so fresh. The place is super clean. Their options are very healthy. My favorites are the the vegetarian curry, garlic fried rice (you can substitute for brown rice) and the pad see yew. This is a must try place!
google avatar

Autumn E.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Clean establishment! Great staff! Very close to hotel. No delivery but only 5 minutes from DoubleTree.
