13 Hottest Restaurants in the Triangle, April 2024

"Occupying the space of the late-lamented Dos Perros, ThaiAngle brings an upscale approach to Thai cuisine to downtown Durham. The Hidden Treasure, spicy balls of minced fish, crab, shrimp, and herbs, comes served in an iron appam pan, and a grilled New York strip steak is served Northern-Thai style with shredded fruits, vegetables, and a spicy sauce. Familiar curries, noodle dishes, appetizers, and even sushi all get a bit of a glow-up while still keeping true to Thai flavors." - Matt Lardie

Went here for lunch with my husband, very fair priced lunch specials, flavor was AMAZING, it’s now our top favorite Thai place in Durham. Spice lever was also great. I got the Panang Curry (Medium spice) and my Husband got the Pad Thai (no spice, nice sweetness). The mango juice wasn’t anything special but still good, but my husband liked the Thai ice tea and their wontons are so crispy definitely a must!! We’ll be coming back again as regulars for sure!

A former Mexican restaurant turned into a lovely Thai restaurant. The menu has both familiar and unique dishes. The service is always very good whether they are busy or not and the food is tasty!

Atmosphere and service were great, however the two dishes we ordered were subpar. The pineapple fried rice had an excellent amount of yellow curry powder, however the chicken was dry and thin. The dish overall was a bit over cooked, missing a good amount of raisins and the pineapple was a bit dry. The other dish, mushroom and broccoli, was overly salted. But everything on that dish was otherwise cooked well. Overall, there are definitely better Thai places for those two dishes, however it was a nice looking restaurant with friendly staff.

4.5 Came back The green curry was split but delicious The service was a mess. Definitely understaffed. Previous visit Best Thai food I've had in the triangle and in a while really ! The drunk noodles were crispy And the chicken cashew was amazing Service was a bit weird ,they took our utensils while I was eating but the food was so good I'm coming back for sure and the prices are decent as well .

Google
Lovely restaurant with great Thai dishes. Everything we ordered - vegetable egg rolls, crispy duck, pineapple fried rice, and roti - were well prepared and tasted great. We'd order all those dishes again, even as we want to explore the rest of their menu. The prices were fair, especially as each entree was enough food for 3 to 4 people. Service can get slower during busier periods (as the sign by the door mentions), but worth the wait.

Google
Excellent food and stellar service. Appreciate having such a fantastic Thai place close to home. They are very busy but the way they run like a well oiled machine you can tell this is their norm.

This is the thai food I have been looking for since we moved to the Triangle almost 3 years ago. Truly some of the best I have had across multiple states, east and west coast! Lived in LA for 22 years and ate thai food at least once a week. Other spots in the RDU area are ok, but none have wowed me...til today. Got the khai soi, pad thai, and masaman curry...and then another pad thai and drunken noodle to go! This drunken noodle is the only one I have had with enough onions, basil and chillies since we moved here. All top notch! Give this spot a try. You won't be sorry!

Google
We found Thaiangle to be the best Thai food in Durham. We dined there many times and enjoyed everything we tried! The papaya salad is spot on flavor-wise and the beef noodle soup is rich and comforting. We were typically served by a delightful female server who was always attentive and smiling. We really miss dining here after moving from the area!

Yelp
Probably my favorite Thai restaurant??!? I really liked everything. The service was good and quick and nice. The ambiance was good too. Lots of natural light near the windows!! It was easy to get a table on a Thursday night. You probably don't need a reservation on weekdays. And the food was really good. You know I love a big portion. The portions weee good. The crispy tofu was amazing. It was actually really crispy!!!! Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Best tofu I have ever had!

Yelp
For my first visit, I kept it simple. I got the red curry with tofu. You get extra veggies when you order the tofu, which is nice and not standard at other Thai restaurants. I asked for hot spice level and got it. By the end my meal, my nose was running a bit and I had a few beads of sweat on my forehead--just as I like it. Had I asked for very hot or extra hot, I would have needed medical care. Overall, the dish was good. I ordered a side of sticky rice and it was disappointing. It was fairly dry and seemed undercooked. Hopefully that's an anomaly. The service was friendly and pretty prompt despite a nearly full house on a Wednesday night at 7. The atmosphere is nice. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
After reading so many positive reviews, we knew we had to try this place. We were seated fairly quickly and off to a good start. That was short lived. Sadly, service here overall really is sub par. The place was understaffed and inattentive. We sat for 15 minutes without any service while others after us were serviced. A staff member finally asked if anyone had waited on us and quickly took our orders. She seemed very rushed. I never got my drink, the appetizers also never arrived - even after waiting 45 minutes and asking nicely for them! Disappointing. Finally, over an hour later, 2 of 3 dishes arrived - the beef Pad Se-ew is delicious and our side of basil fried rice (yum)! Sadly, we then had to wait another 10 minutes to finally receive our 2nd main entree - Drunken Noodles - which we specifically asked for very little spice - but the dish was loaded with hot chili flakes and super spicy...not prepared how we requested, even after she said it would be very little to no spice. I ended up eating the side of rice for dinner since the Drunken Noodles wasn't prepared as requested. We asked to speak with mgmt and politely explained our poor experience. After some discussion, they agreed to remove the appetizer and noodle dish from our bill and admitted they are short staffed, which really created an unpleasant ambiance. While the food here is authentic, tasty and delicious, the rushed atmosphere and service mistakes won't change unless staff is increased. The room was nearly full with a steady flow of patrons...so having stressed staff literally running amongst tables is not fair to them or patrons. This wasn't a good experience dining out...just too many mistakes.

Yelp
The flavors here were pretty good. I liked that the papaya salad was fresh but there was so much sauce. The Tom yum soup was also good but I would prefer it to be a little more sour. Can be a little tricky to find parking especially on the weekdays

Yelp
I think this is a newer place but they have great food and friendly servers. We were seated quickly, ordered water and submitted our order within minutes. The employees kept moving and worked well as a team...filling water, removing empty dishes, checking in... And the food was delicious with a generous serving size. I've been to probably a dozen Thai restaurants and this ranks up near the top.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! Authentic Thai food, with excellent customer service. I ordered the Drunken Noodle spice level 5 and it was on point! Every time I order Thai spice at other restaurants they don't believe me but I was crying and snotting through my dinner which is exactly what I wanted! The portions are fantastic!

Yelp
We went for the first time on a Friday evening before a DPAC show. We were able to make a reservation over the phone which is super helpful when we are limited on time before a show. Food was great with huge portions! I had enough leftovers for 2 lunches. The service was a little rough. They seemed to want us to order very quickly, maybe because we were there early and they knew the rush was coming. They didn't know how to answer questions about the drinks, and when we asked what kind of IPA they had even after they checked with the bar they only told us it was a draught beer and not where the beer was from. When someone in our group ordered a second round of the unknown IPA they brought out a can of something else that had to be sent back. They mixed up tofu pad Thai and chicken pad Thai, thankfully it was just at our table and no one started eating before the mistake was realized. We asked to split the bill down the middle for 2 of us to pay, and they messed things up at least 3x and we had lots of voided out receipts. Definitely hope they can work out some of these kinks, because this spot could be 5 stars if the service improves.

Yelp
Atmosphere: ThaiAngle is a new Thai spot in downtown Durham! The interior is spacious with plenty of seating available. Service: Our server was friendly, and our food came out quickly. Food: We ordered the Basil Pork and Chicken Pad See Ew. The Basil Pork came with a generous portion of meat and a side of rice. The meat was quite flavorful, and the ratio of veggies to meat was just right. The Chicken Pad See Ew was smoky and flavorful! We appreciated that the noodles didn't taste too overcooked. We ordered the Basil Pork with medium spiciness and the Pad See Ew with mild spiciness level. We thought that the spiciness was a bit low and could be bumped up a level for each of our respective dishes. Overall: ThaiAngle provided us with a pleasurable dining experience. The friendly staff, good location, and solid food are all signs that they'll do well as a restaurant! We're looking forward to seeing them grow and coming back in the future!

Yelp
Thai Angle in downtown Durham is a gem. The authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and warm ambiance create a delightful dining experience. The service is attentive and friendly. Highly recommended for Thai cuisine lovers.

Yelp
This joint has it right! Noodles are fresh, sauces are light, all the flavors are amazing. Probably the best Thai place in downtown, go check it out!

Yelp
Thai Angle is one of the best Thai restaurants in Durham. The flavors are bold and authentic. The portion sizes are very generous. We enjoyed the peanut butter sauce and cucumber salad that came with the chicken satay. My favorite dish I've tried so far is the Pacific Rim which includes fish, scallop, squid, mussel, and big succulent shrimp along with a mix of veggies. The Tom Zaab soup was also delicious but I wish we had the option to order in smaller portion size besides the huge hot pot bowl size.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our casual dinner here on a Sunday (which is an added plus because so many downtown Durham restaurants aren't open on Sundays). I'm not a Thai food connoisseur but my husband and I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. The fried calamari app was nice and crispy with big chunky pieces of calamari. It was lightly fried and the batter wasn't heavy. My husband ordered the Crispy Duck (under Chef's Choice) and I ordered the tofu pad see eew. My noodle dish was the top choice. It had a nice Smokey flavor and there was an abundance of tofu and veggies. The crispy duck was also very good, the duck was tender but my husband felt that the side of steamed veggies was bland. We will definitely be back to try other items off the menu but will likely always order a pad see eew to share.

Yelp
Based on other reviews, I think I may have come on an "off" night. My go-to Thai restaurant is either Twisted Noodle or Thai on Main for comparison. The ambiance is fine (lots of florals going on). Prices are about the same as other Thai places in town and the portions were huge. I ordered the pad thai and it was fine but didn't blow me away. What most bothered me was I felt very rushed by the staff. There clearly were specials written on a chalkboard (that I didn't see until I went to the bathroom) that were never mentioned. Our drinks didn't come until after the food (which was very quick). I will definitely try it again as I also may be somewhat biased because I liked Dos Perros a lot (wish somewhere downtown would have a $10 margarita) and they are fairly new.

Yelp
Thai basil and drunken noodle were great. Service was pretty fast for a busy Friday night.

Yelp
Really great shrimp curry and drunken noodles. Large portions and GREAT service. Very reasonably priced especially considering quality.

Yelp
Might be my new favorite Thai restaurant in the Triangle. Portions are large and the pad thai is better than any other around. Prices are better than other Thai restaurants as well. Good service and great location downtown.

Yelp
We had the pleasure of eating at Thai Angle for lunch this past Saturday. It was our first time in the place where Pompieri Pizza was formerly housed. We were greeted warmly and led to our table in this immaculate restaurant. There was a wide range of food. We had a curry dish and a Thai Basil Chicken dish, both were exceptional. Even our pots of tea were delicious We will absolutely return and are happy that there is another choice for Thai cuisine in downtown Durham

Yelp
I ordered pad Thai to go, and it was delicious! Excellent service, and the portion size was enough for two full servings (possibly three, but I couldn't resist)! Glad we have this spot downtown

Yelp
Thaiangle is a fantastic restaurant! This immediately was added to our weekly repertoire (sometimes more often). As a nearby neighbor of theirs, our company is likely to be frequent patrons here for the foreseeable future. The food is consistently great, the portions are plentiful, and the staff are friendly and fantastic (Shout out to Angela!)

Yelp
Fabulous Thai food! All of the seven dishes we ordered were good, but the best were the "Salmon of Two Rivers" and the "Pacific Rim", both of which were memorably excellent. The fish and vegetables were all very fresh, nothing was overcooked, and the presentation was bright and colorful. The service was also attentive without being overbearing. Strongly recommended!!

Yelp
I rarely post reviews but after having some of the best Thai food I have ever eaten in my life at Thai Angle, I wanted to take a moment to support their work. The food is amazing, the service was warm and attentive, and the restaurant was welcoming and attractive. The portions are more than generous and the prices very reasonable. We wish you well in your new restaurant!

Yelp
Bottom Line Up Front: best Thai I've had in Durham so far The Good: Service was polite. Food was delicious and came out piping hot. Rarely at restaurants does it feel like the food came straight from the kitchen but Thai Angle was on the money. Good service. Tasty food and quick yet no rush to push you out the door. Tough to come up with a better formula for a restaurant. With so many good restaurants in Durham I find it difficult to return to one when there are 5 I have not tried yet. Thai Angle is definitely in the return list and I will be returning soon. The Bad: None The Ugly: None

Yelp
Came here for dinner with some friends. Everything was hot and fresh, the Thaiangle Trout and Softshell Crab were especially delicious.

Yelp
Food was delicious - service was fantastic. The Pad-see-ew and the Pad-thai were some of the best we have had in the area. Appetizers were fantastic as well

Yelp
Such a welcome addition to downtown Durham! Excited to return to this family-owned treasure.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've had in a long time! The service was excellent! I will make this a regular lunch place!

Yelp
This is a brand new restaurant in downtown Durham -- only 3 weeks open. Food was excellent. Tasty sake. Very generous portions. Friendly staff. Easy, comfortable atmosphere.

Sophie S.

Yelp
We came here after it was recommended to us. SO good. And a very cute vibe. Had none of the growing pains you think of in a brand new restaurant. The service was friendly and speedy, they answered any questions we had about their menu/knew it backward and forward, and the food came out pretty quickly too. And as for the food - incredible. We had a pad Thai, chicken cashew nut, kung pao tofu, and split a few appetizers and they were all so good! We can't wait to come back. A really special addition to downtown Durham!
