The Best Restaurants in Montreal’s Shaughnessy Village | Eater Montreal

"Thali’s thali platters feature what you want, when you want it: a huge plate full of veg or non-veg flavour in tiny portions so you get to taste everything. If a full thali meal is too much, there’s always butter chicken and garlic naan — just leave room for a gulab jamun dessert." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Google
Thali is one of my favorite Indian places for a quick meal. The food is always ready, all you have to do is choose what you want. This is a family owned restaurant, the flavours are authentic and feel like it was home made. The only issue is the consistency, the food can taste slightly different from time to time depends on who is the chef on that day. It is very cheap compared to other places in Montreal, for 15$ you can get a big plate with rice, lentil soup, naan, and 3 curries of your choice. My go to are the butter chicken and the palak paneer.

Google
The place itself is not the greatest looking but the food is really good. We did order a thali and we could choose four options from the buffet. All the vegetarian ones were flavorful, good amount of spicyness, basically everything you want. The fresh garlic Naan was delicious as well as the fresh Mango Lassy. I will definitely come back when I am around.

Google
Thali was an absolute delight! A perfect mix of flavors, from tangy to spicy to sweet. Every dish complemented the other and the portion size was generous.Truly satisfying.

I went to this restaurant on valentines day with my date and she loved the food. Everything was great, totally worth it.

The onion yogurt curry was possibly the best curry i’ve ever had in my life thus far

Very good authentic Indian food. Very tasty and fast service.

Google
A nice Indian restaurant near Guy station where you can grab a quick bite. They have a small menu and some of them are my favorite dishes like chhole bhature, samosa chat, samosa, and fried rice. They also offer Thali, but I'm not a big fan of it. Desserts are okay. The service is quick, and the seating area is small but does the job.

Google
Really love this place. My favourite desi food in downtown. My go to is the meat thali with: lamb curry, chicken curry and Aloo gobi. Food is always consistent and affordable. The portions are big and very filling. Also would like to mention the employee at the register Nitin, who is very welcoming and a treat to talk to. It was very nice to see him treat all his customers with care and sincerity.

Yelp
Food is ok. Bland. Need more spice. For the money, you don't get a lot of food. Friendly staff. Asked $1 for extra tika sauce.

Yelp
Super cheap Indian food in Montreal but I would be lying if I said it was good. The only thing that I liked was the vegetarian samosas. The rest of what I got, quite frankly, was gross. I am shocked by the good reviews like this is not good Indian food at all... I actually feel kind of bad that people think this is good they are really missing out. I tried the Alu Gobi and the Mattar Paneer but there was no Paneer in it at all. So I have no idea. They were both disgusting. The Dahl was so gross I just tossed it. The only saving grace was that it wasn't to expensive. The Naan was terrible too. Like even the Naan!! Mind-blowing. I never thought I would meet an Indian place I did not like but here it is. This was truly awful. Definitely won't be back when I'm in Montreal.

Yelp
We were walking around st-cath when we stumbled upon this precious gem of a restaurant. As you walk through the doors, you can immediately smell an intense aroma of Indian food. You can smell the spices in the air, definitely inviting for the meal to come. As we went to the cash, the non-vegetable thali came to 13$ tax included, which is an absolute deal. The plate comes with rice, naan and a crispy thin slice of bread, and also 3 choices. I picked the least spicy food, which I coudes butter chicken, saag paneer and potato/eggplant. Not overly spicy, but probably my best Indian meal.

Yelp
*home delivery review* Quality Indian food at a very decent price. Thali combos are recommended! I had the butter chicken, chicken curry thali. Everything was fantastic. Would definitely do again :)
google avatar

Eden L.

Yelp
Inexpensive, good value meal for students living nearby. I like they have many options of add-on side dishes which are the most popular street foods in India. My thali came with three choices of dishes, two meats and one veggie. I like the butter chicken the best, so flavourful. Naan is good too but in delivery it may lose the crispy crust. I will try their other dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
The best authentic Indian restaurant in Montréal downtown. It's a super small place. Reasonable price. Every single dish is flavorful. Service is friendly and quick. Today I had Chana Bathura, good portion and super delicious. My sister had chicken; it was a huge portion and my sister devoured it. The place is always super busy. If you are early enough, there is a chance you will get seats. I always recommended this place to all my family and friends... so far every single person I know has loved the food of Thali!

Yelp
Not much to add about Thali other than it's a cheap hole in the wall. Have only been here once before and that was five years ago. Best deal is their thali platters. I was hungry and needed some late night Friday eats. I dropped by about half an hour before they closed. It's a no frills Indian style cafeteria. Order and pay at the counter, grab the handwritten slip and then tell the worker what you want from the buffet. There was four meat and nine vegetable options when I went. Taxes are already included in the price. - Thali (non-vegetarian) ($10.00) - you get 2 meats and 1 vegetarian option. I went with the lamb curry, chili chicken and palak paneer. It also comes with naan, rice and papadum. Rice is bland but filler. Lamb was tender but not much curry to it. Chili chicken was flavourful and slightly spicy. Naan was solid. Palak paneer was average. You're not going to find a cheaper, satisfying meal. Trust me on that one. Debit or cash only! 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Just sharing some responses by the owner because he thinks his restaurant is a Michelin rated restaurant, at least that is what he thinks, I believe. But I can assure you the food is garbage and there are other restaurants nearby who can do better. His naan is great however. I will be honest where I can. Before going there I would suggest other Indian places, like the one on St Catherine. Save yourself time and money unless you are desperate to get some Indian (desi) food, which is why I went there, until I found other places.
google avatar

Ihabski H.

Yelp
Authentic and tasty. Cheap price and good quality. For only 11$ you get a 3 choices platter. Service is good. Small space, avoid going in groups.
google avatar

Yelp
Small and quaint with too many tables. It's very difficult to maneuver around, which sucked being they were busy! Staff was nice and welcoming which I always like. Sadly though that wasn't enough. The food was underwhelming. If they boosted the seasoning (not necessarily pepper) a few notches it would have helped flavor. Anyway, the naan was salty (and I love salt), the curry lamb was bland and low on curry, the butter chicken lacked flavor, and the peas were also flavorless. I'm used to Indian food being rich with flavor....that was not the case here. The rice was fine and that seasoned cracker thingy okay. Hopefully they can improve on flavor.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
It's good for the price. Best thing is the Chana Samosas and Raita!! Beef curry and butter chicken were decent, but not mind blowing.
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
YOOOO! This place is so cheap for the quality and quantity you get!! I'm seriously mind blown from this place and will be sure to eat here again in my travels. I live in Brooklyn, NY and for this amount of food I got I eaaaasily would have spent over $40- $50 USD. For all the food I got it was only $21 and it tasted amazing. I got: 1. Pakora 4 piece - $2 (cannot believe this was only $2 CAN) 2. Samosa vegetable (x2)- $2 3. Non-veg platter: chicken curry, butter chicken, and Chana masala ($12) 4. Pani puri ($5) 5. Gulab jamuni I could go on for days talking about how cheap and good of quality this place is, but I advise you check it out for yourself. The options aren't endless, but they do a great job on what they have and they focus on their specialities. - they still have a ton of options though. Their chicken curry was super tasty and I really enjoyed their sauce. Same for the chicken curry, the chicken is a bit more tender and the sauce is very mild. Their main entrees aren't spicy, but their pakora has a little punch to it! Their Chana masala is also great. The only thing I didn't really love was the pani puri, but I've never had it and wanted to try something new. And make sure to get gulab jamuni for a nice tasty treat!!! They have a buffet too, but I was getting take away and I couldn't finish half of everything I got.

Yelp
Decided to give this restaurant a shot after reading the reviews and it's not bad at all! The atmosphere isn't as quaint and not that spot clean either but the food looked okay. I had the starter and to be honest, I've had better than this before. It doesn't look promising and delicious. The food for their buffet doesn't seem fresh when you peep through the glass.

Yelp
A south Asian place serving the biggest hits of Indian cuisine, with some personal twist on it. I've had the followings: The Kebab wrap, which is excellent. The Kebab is moist, while spicy at the same time. I always pay the extra 1$ to get Butter Chicken sauce inside of my warp. The contrast between the Roasted meat and the sweet and salty sauce is absolutely magical. The various curries in a thali: Some of them, such as the butter chicken, the lentil/pea based curries, and the Goat curry are amazing and has quite a lot of layers of complexity. Other curries such as the Potatoes and cauliflower tends to be a bit blander. Test them to see which one you prefer ;). The Biryani is actually pretty good, packing both spices, quite a lot of meat and rice. Really refreshing Raita too. The samosas, while packing flavour, tend to be on the smaller side of things for 1$, and the Gulab Jamun is microwaved.
google avatar

Aniket A.

Yelp
This is possibly one of the worst Indian food places I've tried. I ordered palak paneer, mixed vegetable and daal. I don't think I could call it food at all. I cook better food out of grocery store frozen food packets. I'm leaving most of my thali for the dumpster. Really disappointed.

Yelp
I went on of the most chilling days in Montreal before a show - I had a huge craving for Indian food. We went to this place for being the best and closest place to eat. The place is quite small, the food was alright for the price we paid. My combo of two portions of meat and one vegetarian with a mango lassi came in at 15 dollars. While I sit, I can see people walking pass on a huge window. The staffs were friendly and the orders came in fast. You have to show the written paper to the second staff so she can let you choose your food. Not a bad restaurant to chill out and eat. Nothing fancy and nothing amazing - just good food served in a very student-friendly place.
google avatar

Ladan G.

Yelp
I ate at this place today because a friend was highly recommend it for thalis. The place was very small so it was not possible to eat in peace as all the time people trying to pass the tables that are squished together. Regarding the food, my expectation was higher since this place has many good reviews. In my opinion , this place is overrated. And i was in hurry to finish my food so I can leave because in 10 minutes that I was eating so many people were passing through the tables with food plates. I have not tried many Thali places in Montreal but I guess the price was ok. Still I do not have plan to go back there.

Yelp
3-4 years ago I got food poisonning from the butter chicken at this restaurant! I threw up and was non stop on the toilet for 16 hours after eating it and to be honest it tasted fucking disgusting also! This restaurant looks filthy also! The one and only time I experienced food poisonning in my life!

Yelp
My brother loves this place and he took me for the first time last week. He says the food is great and so are the prices. It's in the heart of students and just off St. Catherine and Saint Marc. It's very hot inside so make sure to dress appropriately if you are staying to eat. It's quite small and most people take-out. There are tables for about 15 customers. I was not impressed with my order at all. I got the chicken wrap with cauliflower on the side. The wrap was impossible to eat since it was extremely hard as if it was overcooked. I did not know what to expect, so I tried my best to bite into it. In the end I ate the fillings and left the outside. The cauliflower was good, but nothing special. My brother's dish looked much better, he got the non-vegetarian meat dish with naan bread and a veggie dish which he finished. It won't be my go-to place if I'm craving Indian food.
google avatar

François Y.

Yelp
I was near Concordia University. Didn't know what to eat and felt like trying new stuff. I always passed by this Indian restaurant and we gave it a try. Awesome experience. I didn't know what to order. Proactive staff suggested me the combo meal option: Choose 2 meats and veggies, comes with white rice, naan and crispy flake (DAM GOOD LOL) I chose the Lamb option oohoh (Fabulous, so tasty, shoutout to lamb lover) and butter chicken (good stuff) and some potatoes I thought that it wouldn't fill me up, but NOPE. Good for your money, quality food haha. I'll definitely come back for a lamb wrap and try the other meat options ;') Keep the good job!
google avatar

Doris Z.

Yelp
It's more like a 3.5 star. Good value for money! Don't expect good atmosphere thought. Good: -$10 for two meat, one veggie, rice, nann, papadum. -really good nann, soft but chewy at the same time, one wasn't enough to for me! -really flavourful lamb, chicken and the eggplant and potato dish Bad: -not a great atmosphere, self-served, had to fight for seats -bad mango lassi, tasted like powered drink It's like a Indian food cafeteria, not with the typical French restaurant atmosphere that I really enjoy. But this would definitely be my go to spot to satisfy my Indian food craving.
google avatar

Aileen L.

Yelp
ATMOSPHERE: Its a pretty small restaurant and gets packed very quickly. You can also get takeout which is a pretty popular option too. FOOD: Overall, the food was okay. The curries were flavourful but the meats were a little bit too dry for me. The good thing is that they do give you quite a large amount of food. It wasn't extremely special but it still wasn't a bad spot to go when you're craving quick Indian food. PRICE: Prices are affordable. My non-vegetarian thali was about 12$ and was pretty worth it. There are lots of other options on the menu. SERVICE: The servers are very friendly and welcoming. If you have any questions regarding their menu, they are very kind and patient and are willing to explain it to you.

Yelp
Located just a few blocks from Concordia, it's tucked away on a side street ensuring cheap rent and awesome prices for some really delicious food. The Tandori chicken was my favorite especially when eating it with garlic nan. It was a little intimidating the first time since the menu/ordering process wasn't totally clear for the buffet line, but when I approached with a deer in the headlights look the guy manning the cash register sorted me out. For a treat I picked up a mango lassi which was decent enough for being more than an ocean's distance from any mango trees. Thali works well as a quick and grungy establishment to stuff your gourd and carry on with your day. The food is cheap, portions are large, and it's on your plate within minutes. Thali also works when you are hankering for Indian food, not the best I've had but a decent approximation. Bottom line, I'll be back for plenty more food at this hidden gem.
google avatar

Cathy J.

Yelp
This quick casual, no frills Indian place is popular with the college crowd but the quality of food makes it a good choice regardless of whether or not you're a student. If you're in need of a feast for cheap, this place won't disappoint. You get a very impressive load of food for $10 (veg thali) or $11 (nonveg): 3 curries, basmati rice, a papadum, and a huge fluffy piece of naan. Vegan options are clearly marked! The dahl was excellently spiced and my favorite of all the choices. Chana masala was the only veg option marked as spicy but was not as hot as I would have liked. But then again I prefer all my food to be on fire... don't you?
google avatar

Nicolas A.

Yelp
I live around the block and never actually stopped by but I was feeling lazy to cook so I gave it a try. Honestly I'm surprised by how much food you get for 9$ veggie plate. I have had the chance to go to Southern India and although that doesn't make me a connaisseur I found the food to be similar in taste! Removing 1 star because I feel the place needs a good clean. The floor under the buffet looked iffy so I feel this is one of those places you overlook the details due to the price and tasty food. I'll be back!

Neel L.

Yelp
Thali is a hole-in-the-wall type restaurant with a "cafeteria" style ordering counter and only accepts cash. It's also pretty tight in spacing if you want to eat there. I personally find the food just about average. Their papadum is great but the curries are ok. I find them a bit watered down and they dont give you that much meat if you order a meat thali. I've eaten at the restaurant and for takeout and both are pretty average. The sizes are decent for the price - it's good for a quick meal. I have heard good things about their butter chicken wrap - which I will definitely be trying.
google avatar

Norine A.

Yelp
This is a popular student joint, but don't be fooled- prices are steep for Indian fast food. With a minimum 15$ purchase need for credit card, 5$ purchase for debit. Cleanliness is questionable. I ordered a 2 meat, 1 veg combo for 12$. Seeing the options, I asked the server if could have just the chicken in place of spicier curries. The server responded it would cost a dollar extra for two servings of the same meat curry. I am confused- I thought that made no sense. Chicken is definitely cheaper than many other meats. So,I settled for two different curries: the chicken and the lamb. There was no salad that came with the meal. The curries were not of good quality and the naan bread was stale. I ended up throwing out my food after 2 bites. Tap water is stored in a large cooler- unhygienic. Disappointments are real.
google avatar

Tristan M.

Yelp
Excellent hidden cubby hole of a place that houses incredible Indian food. Selection is good for the size of the space and is perfect for a quick bite to eat with friends. Plus who wouldn't want to drink a Thums up soda during lunch time anyways!!!! :-)
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
Nice combo, i particularly dont like big chucks of beef thrown in a curry but it was good nonetheless. Takeout would be better option as the place is quite small.
google avatar

Stephen K.

Yelp
Ok well I don't know what to say this place is between good and not good, let me explain. Well let's start with the good thing firstly the food is colorful, flavor is there, the portions are great and filling and you get a nice piece of naan bread,i guess the best parts is the price and portion. Oh yeah and the service is pretty fast. Now for things I don't like. The restaurant is situated right downtown so parking is quite a problem or if you do find you'll have to pay,the restaurant is small and crowded, the servers at the counters are rude and impatient, and last thing that bothers be there is the questionable hygiene of workers plus the cooking spaces and counter.....seems to be missing cleanliness!
google avatar

Lucy G.

Yelp
Tasty as heck! Love the bread, love the butter chicken and the chana and the aloo. I recently went vegan so I got worried I'd miss out of this place but NOPE!! Knowledgeable staff and a pretty clearly indicated menu, this will remain one of my usual spots as it is super close to me. Love love love.
google avatar

Anne C.

Yelp
Oh gosh, hands down one of my favourites. The best Indian and at such great prices. Always get the thali and pakoras.
google avatar

Kaixin Z.

Yelp
Been here a few times in the last month and honestly, this place is by far the best place you can go for Indian food while on a budget. Keep in mind this might not be the best indian food out there but for the price (10$ for thali w/ 3 sides) it is unbeatable. That's not to say that the food isn't good however! I would say that its on par with most other places near the Concordia area just based on taste alone. The place is rather small however, so one tip would definitely be to try to go early, at an off hour or for take out. Its definitely a popular place and there's nothing worse than not being able to find a spot to enjoy your meal! Overall, definitely would recommend, especially to students.
google avatar

WhiteFeather H.

Yelp
This is definitely my go-to Indian food restaurant in Montreal. It's TOTALLY satisfying every single time, fast, and really, really affordable. Perfect for a lunch fix when you're in a rush. Typically I share a plate with my lunch date, whoever it happens to be, because it's enough food for both of us, especially if we order an extra piece of naan. I'm going to keep this review simple, because the Thali experience is simple: order at the cash, pay, give your slip to the guy behind the food counter and select your choice of meat or veggie dishes from the buffet-type spread. Water is in a thermos-style jug at the side of the counter, and stainless steel glasses are stacked next to it. Serve yourself. It's always packed here but somehow you'll find a seat when you're ready to sit down. It's got sort of a seedy-type, hole-in-the-wall interior, but who cares? The food is worth it.
google avatar

Hd Q.

Yelp
Feeling a bit uneasy eating from there now that the bug-zipper is positioned above food chafer. Bug particles have to be making their way into tray.
google avatar

Vidya S.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with Thaili! The food is served quick as it's from a buffet line, so if you're looking for freshly cooked don't count on it, but for the prices, it's decent and tasty! The man who was at the counter taking my order was a little gruff but it's not a big deal. Generous portions served on metallic trays, very Indian style. The food tastes extremely authentic and very similar to how my grandmother cooks for me! Overall I had a great experience and will come back again!
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Very spicy !!! Big portions , low price, few tables and nice service. Little oldy decoration and doubful cleanliness but i did not get sick , was good taste.
google avatar

Nayara L.

Yelp
This restaurant was across the street from my airbnb and is located pretty centrally downtown so it was in a very convenient location! They are small so wouldn't recommend for groups but my friends and I got takeout and it was delicious! What I love is that they have a buffet so you can choose different entrees (both vegetarian and non) and mix and match between different favorites. Personally I always want both paneer and chicken, so I was able to get both with their combo which was amazing! Their veggie samosa with tamarind sauce was also delicious and so was their mango lassi. It's also very affordable, my platter was around $12 ($10 USD) which to me is a really great deal. Would recommend for takeout or a casual day/night.
google avatar

Deborah G.

Yelp
I don't understand the positive reviews of this place. I've been 3 times in order to give them a chance and all 3 times the food was so bad I couldn't finish it. This was a while back so maybe their food has improved but when I went it was awful. Musty tasting rice as if it had been reheated repeatedly and the butter chicken was inedible. The mixed vegetables were ok at best. The only edible thing there was the naan.
google avatar

Jasneet S.

Yelp
Generally, food is mediocre at its best. However, the service and attitude of staff is shitty ! Twice it happened to me that in the name of Goat curry they served me "BONES" curry. Of course, they weren't ready to rectify their mistake or even acknowledge it. !! NAAN is fresh out of fridge ! Save your money and get some heat & eat food !
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
Simple inexpensive no-frills Indian food cafeteria style. Great place to go if you're downtown and want to grab a quick bite. The flavours are all there, and the price is right.
google avatar

M Akter T.

Yelp
Went there once and had a great rime. Good portion, good food, good price. If you are looking for indian food this is the place to go. But really dont go expecting bangladeshi food here, you will be disappointed.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Great food for a great price. I came here with two friends and we ordered one vegetarian platter and one meat platter and had way more than enough food to share. At $10 a platter, you certainly can't beat the price for the amount of food you receive. The food was flavorful and the naan was amazing- very fresh and fluffy.
google avatar

Salman J.

Yelp
Very friendly place that offers flavorful punjabi dishes. Efficiently picked out our meals with the thali option on the menu, allowing for a variety of vegetable and curry dishes. Recommend for a hearty indian meal at a great price point!
google avatar

Gordon K.

Yelp
proper name Thali Cuisine Indienne. hole in wall, ambience of a run down bus station. very popular with students from Concordia. excellent food at very reasonable prices. Tandoori n nan first rate. all the dishes r first rate. can be very busy at meal time. but noone lingers. buffet style. not serve yourself. hidden gem.
google avatar

Aron E.

Yelp
Some dishes are very delicious but some are not up-to the mark. Definitely try the Non veg thali especially with Butter chicken it's delicious. Palak paneer has been a real disappointment here should avoid at all costs. Ambiance is very desi which is a plus.
google avatar

Nata A.

Yelp
Indian food is my weakness, so descovering this place had a double importance for me: i needed to eat something quickly and i wanted to discover a new indien restaurant in Montreal. The samoza was delicious, but very spicy and too many ingredients on the plate. Looking weird. The mango yogurt was too sweet. Why do they add so much sugar if they use good mangos. The condensed milk desserts were delicious. Prices were really friendly: CAD 12 for the meal. The place is not for people who want to take their time, enjoying the meal in a nice atmosphere. It's crowdy, not very clean.
google avatar

Rod M.

Yelp
I'd say that Thali is 3.5 stars. They offer good quality food at excellent prices for sit in or takeout. Thali is a great spot to stop at to grab a quick bite at an affordable price. My goto is the thali plate which gives you the option to pick your favorite dishes from their counter and includes your choice of bread. Everything is very fresh and flavourful, so you cant really go wrong. Their Biryani is also good, and of course the mango lassi.

If you're on a budget and happen to be downtown, this is the spot to go to. For $10 tax included, you get a large platter that's enough to share for two (trust me, it's more than enough because the food is really filling). The location is at Guy Concordia, conveniently close to the metro. The standout dish is the curry lamb...like where else can you get lamb for $10? You can even get a mimosa for only $1! However, the room is a bit small, resembles an unkempt fast food restaurant. The naan bread can be a bit greasy, but still good. My bottom line opinion is to definitely treat yourself on a cold winter day if you're downtown. I've officially found my go-to Indian food spot.
